  • Mark Hamill explains how he views the Sequel Trilogy!
After Han Solo was killed off in The Force Awakens and he was killed off in The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill was not very happy about Luke's character development from the sequels!
BUT do you agree with Mark?

The fact that Han, Leia, and Luke were never together in the sequels is heartbreaking. Hell, the fact that Han and Luke never even interacted at all is wild. I understand wanting to phase out the original cast to focus on the new cast, but they did it without actually respecting the original cast imo.

Hamil & the rest are freakin' old. We were lucky to see them back at all. There really isn't much else to do with them(besides Luke being a Force Ghost), when the actors wont be with us for much longer.
Seriously, the R2 actor, Chewie & Leia are gone. The og Obi-Wan, Vader(the tall guy in the suit that originally did the lines) died long before them. All thats left is Luke, Han & Lando. And Palpatine kinda, that man protrayed him in the re-released OT, Prequels AND Ep 9, plus all these shows in between in PT & OT.
And dont even mention recasts. Granted, that will certainly be the plan for Heir To The Empire. A plan AND a test to see if prime recasts of the OGs dont get alot of complaints. But people WILL complain, its inevitable.

@@ZeroFilmClips Sorry, but this isn't an apt comparison. Yeah, Han Solo spent the first half of RotJ either frozen or helpless, but for the second half of the movie he grows (at least a little bit) beyond just being the scoundrel smuggler; assuming a leadership-role within the Rebel's mission on Endor. And in the end he makes it possible for the shields of the second Death Star to come down. Yeah he spent the first half of the movie being useless, but it wasn't exactly his choice... He was frozen in carbonite because Lando betrayed him, and once freed and rescued, he didn't slink away to become some recluse. Hell, I'd go so far to say that what they did to Han Solo in TFA was almost as bad as what was done to Luke in TLJ.
In TLJ, Luke's character was just treated with nothing but disrespect and contempt. The young Jedi who once put his own life on the line to redeem one of the most infamous Sith to ever live goes from that to drawing a lightsaber on his own nephew over a vision, then goes on to become a broken hermit living on some backwater planet... One that has given up on everything he once held dear. And when he actually DOES something, it's just a force-illusion that ends up killing him.

if we compare the state of luke at the end of 7 and obi wan at the entirety of 4 and really it's almost interchangeable with the end of 3 because that's what happens when you know what the story you're writing leads towards (yeah it's easy to write lead ins for a movie that's already filmed, but you know what else is easier than what jja began sequels with? writing lead ins for a movie that you already know that you want to write later instead of just throwing everything together if it just sounds cool and implies something more and hoping that it will just roll), it becomes immediately obvious how shallow or constricting this cool setup is. kenobi lost a war, so instead of fighting armies he was watching over a person of great importance to the entire galaxy to tutor him when the time comes. he had basically nobody to turn to to do this job, whatever rebels existed at the start of 4 have only just gathered enough strength to resist openly (and if you go by rogue-one, only just found a reason to asap jump to action or face extinction) and some actors such as Leia tried their best to pretend-play along in public until after emperor disbanded the council, and also paid a heavy toll immediately with Alderaan before any big battles even occurred. that leaves kenobi at the start of 4 as a man who has decent reasons to hide himself - for his own safety, for safety of his effective assignment, and to keep the enemy guessing about what happened with him. in 7, jja tries to convince us very much that the first order is just like the empire and the resistance is just like rebel alliance and luke is kinda like kenobi and yoda in one man you guys, ignoring that the new republic must have been established prior, so whatever political and military power the first order gained by force or not would have been done so in luke's lifetime, meaning he had no threat to hide from and also nothing **to** hide, and he just didn't do anything to stop it or stopped trying to. for some at the time of 7 yet unexplained reason, he went fishing and never came back. this is 7. it was a fun movie to watch, and seeing luke again if only for one scene was cool, and i could live without han solo dying so stupidly though it was cool to see him too while it lasted, and kylo was a bit of an edgelord but also uh, he's a sith, so good for him, and finn and rey had neat backstories that i enjoyed in 2015, but thinking about this movie and what its setups imply is just a fruitless effort if you don't want to be disappointed.
imagine if 8 started by luke going "oh really? there are imperial-esque forces led to battle by my nephew that definitely should have been my apprentice regardless of whether that was established yet? oh shucks, why did nobody tell me, let's start grinding levels immediately :D" like it's either that, he's unaware and incompetent, or it's what we've got, because in no world luke that we knew, who defied his teacher in 5 by throwing himself in front of vader to save his friends and took initiative in 6 to redeem his father at the risk of his own life, would stay exiled voluntarily while there's, you know, his-lifelong-friends-dying and entire-planetary-systems-exploding going on outside. that's about what mark hamill said his thoughts were upon reading the script of 8, i wonder with hindsight 20/20 why wasn't that the thoughts of everybody when they saw the end of 7.

And WHY!?? Didn’t they think that George Lucas episodes would do WORSE than what 7-9 did with those “creators” & let Kathleen Kennedy KEEPING GEORGE LUCAS OUT of those episodes!? And not following what they promised GEORGE LUCAS when they bought Star Wars!! I will never ever understand why Kathleen Kennedy has been allowed to FUCK UP SO MUCH!! I will never understand why she was allowed to FIRE Gina Carano and destroying the “GIRL POWER” that Kathleen Kennedy said she wanted with “the force is female” BS cos GINA IS GIRL POWER in ONE STRONG character in Mandalorian!! Darth JJ and Ruin Johnson most definitely performed a character assassination on Luke Skywalker. Not to say that a character cannot go from a pillar of hope that looks for the good in the most corrupted family member to someone that considers putting an end to another family member that shows signs of becoming corrupted, but *if* you're going to make that kind of dramatic change of character traits, you have to show the audience how it happened instead of hand-waving away as something that must have happened off screen. This is something the prequel trilogy did rather well. The audience got to see how a well-meaning Anakin was slowly corrupted into a villain feared across the galaxy. The Luke we saw at the end of Ep 6 would never have behaved the way he did in Ep 7 & 8. It boils down to this. What was the reason that Luke was at least considering murdering Ben Solo? Because the writers wanted him to.

The truth is Disney messed up. Firstly it took months to script and cast it - with constant rewrites and changes. The original heroes trio weren’t confirmed for over a year into production. The fact that they didn’t bring them all together in at least one scene for the first movie, was a huge mistake. Plus the idea to kill off Han, Luke and Leia in each consecutive film will forever ‘haunt’ this trilogy. The main reason being that the new characters don’t have a tenth of the charm and charisma of Ford, Hamill and Fisher. Their casting back in the 70’s was lightning in a bottle.
