- Delving deeper into last week's thrilling discovery, we're excited to unveil our initial encounter with the Plaque Rock Female's fourth litter of cubs. After an extensive search for her den, our perseverance paid off as we traced her to a secluded haven nestled among rocks and tree roots. Despite the soaring temperatures, our efforts rewarded us with a captivating sighting of the mother and her three cubs, estimated to be around six weeks old. The joy of discovering her den is matched only by our eager anticipation for the enchanting moments ahead as we witness these cubs grow.
In the days that followed, Robyn embarked on a journey to the Plaque Rock Female's den, capturing a truly extraordinary scene. The mother delicately moved her three cubs to a breathtaking cluster of boulders along the Sand River, establishing a new den. Carrying one cub in her mouth and accompanied by another running alongside her, she gracefully vanished into the boulders before promptly returning to collect the third cub.
Keen to experience this mesmerizing den scene firsthand, I visited later that day. To my delight, the mother and her cubs were still there, treating us to a phenomenal spectacle as they explored the nooks and crannies of their new den. Our stroke of luck continued as we observed the Plaque Rock Female carrying her cub not just once, but twice. I have been waiting for this for months maybe even years, its been a while. Not 1, not 2 but 3 cubs. Most South African Leopards normally give births to only 2 cubs, at least thats what i have been seeing forever but not this time. This just made my day, Thank you

Such tiny little cubs! I haven't seen 3 before either, or even any that young. They only look about 4 weeks old.
Edit: my bad! I wrote that, and the very next thing Sean said was "...they're about 6 weeks old." I was going by how house-cat kittens act and move at that age. Shows how much (or rather little) that I know!

How does she pick which cub she will carry to the new den and which cubs must walk?
Maybe she just randomly chooses one or picks up the closer one. Or maybe she decides to carry the more mischievous one because she knows that the chances of it running off is higher.
Is it common for leopards to have more than 2 cubs? I don't think I've seen it much at all. Also, what is the likelihood of them reaching adulthood? Less than with 1 or 2 cubs or about the same? Thank you!
No it is not common. They normally have two.
