  • The Tamboti female's young cub takes on his father, the Camp Pan Male Leopard, in a game of rough and tumble at Londolozi Game Reserve, bordering the Kruger National Park in South Africa. This is an extremely rare sighting of three leopards togther - a father, mother and their young daughter. Filmed by: John Varty

    What a beautiful sighting, I never knew male leopard fathers occasionally played with their cubs like that. Male tigers have also been documented visiting and playing with their cubs in the wild, but I never knew male leopards did this too.

    What a wonderful sighting, truly unique! It is very, very rare to see a male leopard play with his cub, and to have all three (mother, father & cub) interacting was a miracle to witness! Thank you for posting this fantastic sighting.

    A rare sight...usually is the mother the one always with the cubs...father's always missing...leopard males are not known to be doting fathers at all!! A very rare sight indeed to see mother, father and the kids together!!

      +Salto DelPuma It's not that the fathers takes no part in raising the kids, it's that male leopards, just like for any other felin, spend many time patroling their territories, it's rare to capture them in the time they spend with their families. It's the same for tigers.

I am more interested in the enthusiasm displayed as if said person has made a remarkable discovery... the reason the video was created was for the reasons provided by the comment.. lol "Everybody! A most unusual but beautiful sighting. That male Leopard was incredibly patient and tolerant with that young cub. I wonder if way way back in the evolution of Leopards, was there a time when they were far more social and lived in groups or prides like lions?🐾

    • @seanmacguire2692
      @seanmacguire2692 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. Leopards always lived in nuclear families unlike lions who live in extended families.

    • @jasonvoorhees5180
      @jasonvoorhees5180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Like sean said leopards have always been predominantly solitary cats with “nuclear” type families. This behavior we’re seeing isn’t unusual at all, tigers do it too. The territory of dominant males will often overlap with females they mate with even though they usually live apart aside from mating. As a result males will come to visit their cubs every once in a while and sometimes even watch them while the mother goes out hunting. We’re just gradually learning that more solitary big cats aren’t as disconnected from one another as once thought.

    It is said that a leopard cannot change its spots, but these are social cats or should I say leopards. The only question is if this is evolution taking place right in front of our eyes, or just a rare occasion of nature?

    • @jasonvoorhees5180
      @jasonvoorhees5180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This isn’t really an evolutionary change we’re witnessing, it’s just that we’re gaining new insight into their behavior. Leopards are and _always have been_ solitary cats. It’s just that people think “solitary” = never coming into contact with one another outside of territorial contests and mating which isn’t quite correct. Solitary essentially means that they live and hunt alone. But since male leopards have territories that overlap with the females they mate with they’ll occasionally stop by and meet their own cubs.
