  • When striking from the standing position it is very important to understand how to set up you attacks. Without proper set-ups you can find yourself getting countered. The pendulum kick is a powerful way to set up your strikes and is often used in Muay Thai and K1 fights.
I have worked many of the best fighters in the world and I have seen many great fighters who with this simple attack where able to control there opponent. The pendulum kick is the equivalent of the Jab in boxing a skill which takes years to master.

The details in these "How to fight" series, like ending the kick square and repositioning or considering both of the oponents possible reactions, are what put them above the rest of the instructionals you normally see on youtube. Great material! Keep them coming!

Bryan Smith yes. It is used a lot also in Kyokushin.
Muay Thai learns a lot from other martial arts. What surprises is when it defines these techniques as it's own

I like your youtube channel and im learning a lot...for this i want to point out that its important to throw a fake with the hand and the kick. Its basic but still a lot of professionals dont do it and they not only get blocked but also countered.

not to criticize because this is awesome, and as one person already mentioned, the pendulum is used quite frequently in JKD...I would just say that after you have landed the kick and brought the attacking leg back to center, all you have to do is move the rear foot back to regain your distance, without giving up ground. basically a full pendulum. I don't like to give ground, so this technique is perfect for attacking and making a choice to move or stay in range to set up other stuff! Thanks for posting Sir!

It's really a matter of the fighter's preference. I would rather go in, do damage, and go out like Firas has shown. His method is the safer route for a MMA setting. you're far less susceptible to takedowns or counters if you're not in the pocket to get countered. Your opponent can't hit what's not there.
especially in a MMA setting, you definitely want to deny your opponents from gaining any chance to earn points.

Classic kung fu move, wasn't aware it was present in muay thai as well. Good for muay thai fighter it is because its damn powerful!
In kung fu this half step can be used to set up any kick and makes them more powerful than if thrown standing still.
I highly recomend anyone interested in the striking aspect of fighting to look these techniques up!
