The guy who made Unworthy is now working in Crowsworn. Sometimes these smaller, mid games are useful to appreciate a developer's growth and the design lessons they try to implement.
the elevators are slow in unworthy for a reason, there is a lot to explore off of them such as hidden walls and passgae ways. pretty certain that was a design decision. as for not being able to slide down ladders quickly, i will give you that one and also the difficulty spikes are all over the place. that said unworthy kept me engaged for a few days in order to beat it. i lost interest in elderland in just a few hours.
The developer of Unworthy was going to relegate the teleportation bow to a button press (rather than a weapon slot) after the game's release, but unfortunately (according to the steam update) had to deal with an illness in the family and ceased all development. It's a shame; I really liked Unworthy and still regard it fondly, but that change would have been very impactful.
There's some "AAA" games out there that are just plain awful and boring. FF16 is a great example. That *hit is not a game, is just a 20+ hour long movie. You take a step and have to watch 5 hours of a cutscene, once that is done, you are like OMG finally i can play this effing game, but nope. Then you take 2 more steps and are met with 34 more hours of cutscenes. Simply the worse gaming experience of 2023.
Completely different genre, but the charms in Hollow Knight most closely remind of the badges in the first two Paper Marios, just with the added mechanic of forcing yourself over the limit for a detriment.
Some of the boss fights in unworthy are some of the most memorable subversions of typical souls tropes.I think reviewing it in line with other souls titles where not having a dedicated jump button would have made a lot more sense than trying to make it fit with an unrelated game.
I found Unworthy to be... charmingly dreary. It's slow, perhaps too much, and the lack of a jump sticks like a sore thumb, making you rely on the teleportation bow. The path to the true ending is obnoxiously obscure, but gives you some neat surprises. I think the best ace this game has are the bosses, they are all incredibly unique and pull off diferent mechanics, their combos even proress as their health bar goes down giving the impression that they are adapting to you. And the OST for the Forest Dancer absolutely slaps. The guy who made it is not working on crowsworn, which, after playing the demo, it's certainly a step up in terms of game design.
I enjoyed this video on two metroidvanias that I don't really care about but now I have watched this I want to play them anyway. Really agree on the nintendo point too, wish they would stop throwing new gimmicks in the ring and spend a little more time perfecting the ideas introduced in older games.
Hi ingenious clown gaming, prince of persia the lost crown is a 2d metroidvania game made by... UBISOFT?!?! Yeah, this game is getting talked about a LOT on r/metroidvania and youtube. If you want a lot of views, this golden goose is staring you in the face.
Hollow Knight RIPPED OFF Rabi-Ribi confirmed. Rabi is the true Hollow knight. Also now I know you're a degenerate like me, because you brought up a waifu-metroidvania completely unprompted.

Oh I had no idea he was working on Crowsworn. I've seen a bit from that game and it looks incredibly sick
It's funny you mention that. Crowsworn is also looking like a game which is so besotted with its gimmick its at the cost of everything else
We still don't know if Crowsworn is actually good or not tbh.
I hate not being able to jump. Even if jumping serves no useful purpose lol
I need to jump in video games because I'll rarely ever jump in real life.
The witness:
smite legit just has jumps cos it feels really bad without them but gameplay wise they dont do anything and i love that

Unworthy's cool. Bow is not exactly Aeterna Noctis's teleport but i vibe with it
Another good video my boy, glad to see new ones from ya.

I really enjoyed this video, I love Metroidvanias and actually sought out coverage on these games!

Something like that already existed in Megaman X: Command Mission, though it’s not the same from what I know.
The main inspiration behind the charms from hollow knight are the badges from paper Mario.

Great video. I’m making a metroidvania adjacent game and this gave me food for thought.

To your point in the first part, my game of choice that follows that is Slay the Spire
What is your opinion on Moonscars? It looks fantastic, but no one is talking about it.. I haven’t played it myself
It's kinda mid. Unique and cool, but short and isn't very variable
Earliest example of the badge system i can think of is paper mario

With just how many games are coming out these days you kind of do need to stand out in some fashion or just be drowned out.
Berry good video!
you should play UnderRail, it's great

Yeah i agree, elden ring is boring and unmemorable
The causes of his issues are the combination of skill issue and ADHD
Please, make more elden ring unique run video. That was the only reason I subscribed to your channel and many people watched your videos.
Oh shush
nobody made you click on this obviously not elden ring video
He is a game critic, he made few ER videos but he never said he was switching to it exclusively
He was doing these videos before Elden Ring, and they're a reason that a lot of us subscribed
But what if I clicked for this type of content?
