Sounds like this release would be a great whiskey for that fancy decanter we all got for Christmas.
That bottle spent 22 months in a Sherry cask so the dark colors are proof of that. The rich flavor I enjoy and I am glad you did as well.
I do like sherry-forward scotches and usually go to Aberlour A'Bunadh and it goes for about the same cost. It might be worth trying the Kirkland to see how it compares... You mentioned walnut (?) in the flavor profile while the Aberlour has maybe some more milder almond, orange candy, some baking spice, and lots of raisin. For the price, though, I'll say that the Aberlour is bottled at cask strength.
Sherry cask finishes are my FAVORITE. I'll have to hunt this down...

Love just about anythig sherry cask or finish. Glendronach is my favorite scotch house. Redbreast I was never huge on until I tried the Lustau.
Agree. Lustau edition takes redbreast to the next echelon.
They need to do a show (or at least comment) on the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission diverting rare whiskeys like Pappy Van Winkle scamming the public. (They would apparently send the rare bottles to a specific state liquor stores and purchase them before the public even knew they were available.)

I know you have been working through your donations for quite some time, so what year was this 23 year Kirkland Speyside? I'm guessing it wasn't the most recent one they would have released in fall/winter 2022.
Put the jewel side on the backside of the star, have a swivel above and below the star so it can spin independently, this way you get the new bling and mostly same form factor
Hey Rex and Dan, I remember you two mentioning something along the lines of how for some people the smokiness of an Islay Scotch presents as rubber or something like that. I am unfortunately one of those people. I have tried Laphroaig 10, Ardbeg An Oa, Highland Park 18, and Talisker 10, and all of them presented that way to me. Is there any Islay you would recommend that might open that category up for me? Or should I just write it off completely and just stick to the Highland and Speyside that I like?
Caol Ila 12 maybe? Though if all of those are representing the smokiness the same way, you could be better off just coming back to one of those periodically, especially if you already have some bottles. It could be your nose just needs time to get adjusted/used to the smokiness.
you could also try other types such as highland scotch with some smoke. it's much lighter.
You'll want a non Islay peated. Try something Highland or Campbeltown like Glen scotia or Longrow that's been peated. Tbh, I think finding rubber peat in Highland Park 18 seems odd. You might be imagining it at that point....
You should try Port Charlotte 10. Is a fantastic Islay with a beautifull, refined, peat smoke. Is something else from the bunch of regular peated islay single malts.
Yes one on each side turning into one is probably the best way.

I love Kirkland's bourbon. Wish I could find it anymore. Haven't seen any in forever.
I ran into a whole case of this at a local shop, but they wanted $125 a bottle and I knew it was marked up from $80ish. I passed.

Another one that has a rich colour like that whiskey is Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old or Glenmorangie The Nectar D’Or.
I for one am not a whiskey drinker but I have family members who are (I just can’t tolerate the taste😢, yet), however… Love the channel. Entertaining & educating. Keep it up!
I got into whisky through aged Rum. Then Irish single potstill, then unpeated Scotch, up to peated Scotch. The sweetness was a good distraction from the ethanol, making my second take at whisky a success.
But don't overthink it. If you're more into other spirits or mixes that's also cool...
Try it alongside food. I generally order a measure of something fancy when I go to the local Brazilian steakhouse, and just go through it over the course of the entire meal. The ethanol slowly subsides, and some notes just come thundering forward...
Just a thought.
@@andrewamann2821 That's weird, hard alcohol and food don't mix well, which is why you generally cook the alcohol out of any food you add it to.
@@bobbygetsbanned6049 Hard alcohol and food can mix incredibly well, if they're not actively in conflict with each other, and you're not throwing it down quickly. Between necessarily slowing your consumption rate, and the added salt and contextual flavors, food can really help to accentuate what's in the glass.

Why not attach the levels to the back of the medallion, highest level staying above the medallion, or have the lower levels etched into the back of the medallion as rank is gained

I mean the medallion is thick but perhaps have insets on the back to put the smaller medals in, each level having it's own symbol. Very pokemon I know but hey.
How about "Welcome to the Whiskey Archives"
For the Som Medallion.
Could create some sort of Bezel that goes around the Medallion and clips together on the top or is soldered together. Can have a Ceremony, clip the Bezel onto the Medallion when the Som graduates and saves from having to drill into the Bronze or making any permanent alterations to the Metal itself.
Something like a coin Bezel, maybe some sort of leaf wreath with a Mother of Pearl or Barrel wood inlay.
That juice is mighty dark. If I didn't know better I'd say it was a bourbon. They must've had some sherry left sloshing around in the barrels as you said; I can't feature used barrels giving the whisky that much color in just a finishing time.

There are States here in the U.S. that only allow high proof spirits to be sold in government run stores. So for example, I can't get it at my Costco in Idaho. 🤔

Several suggestion for level 4. Either star in the middle with jewel on either side, or jewel in the middle with star on either side. Make it symmetrical. Or do something like a Catholic Scapular. Hang another medallion on the back of the chain. Or make the medallion into a Bolo with the chain replacing the leather strap and a star on one end and a jewel on the other. You're welcome. 🙂

I think you swap the star for the level 4 piece. And then if there is ever a level 5, that swaps out for the new lvl 5 piece. right so, level 1 is the medallion, two makes the necklace. 3 adds a star connector, 4 adds a jewel connector, 5 adds a _______ connector, etc etc. Thats what Id do probably
