    Really enjoying the Ironman videos. I just started playing DF and learning as much as I can. Also the everyday family and life stuff is super relatable to me. Fun to hear while watching DF.

    Loved all your thoughts on the Iliad and the Odyssey, but the "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" statement that started it all actually has nothing to do with Homer! It comes from the practice of looking at a horse's teeth to determine it's age, and basically means "don't try to find a flaw in something that was given in goodwill."

    This was a very enjoyable episode. I really need to set foot outside of Daggerfall and its immediate environs. Sentinel really seems like a fun place to look around. Do you need a significant number of mods to make Hammerfell stand out from Highrock?
    I always like hearing people discuss classical poetry and epics in everyday contexts. My father always was a huge fan of Hector and I also think he is the most admirable person in the Iliad. As for Odysseus, I think you raise quite a few good points about how deceptive and violent the dude is, and it is interesting that while he is a cultural hero in classical Greece, he is a cultural villain for the Romans, as we see in the Aeneid. I think it is helpful to recall that Odysseus is the grandson of the famous thief and trickster Autolycus who was such an accomplished scoundrel that Hermes granted him special favor. I think that the Greeks in the period in which the Trojan War occurred existed in a cultural state very similar to that of the Scandinavians during the Viking ages. The Greeks were sea raiders who valued martial prowess and cunning, that is those traits that can be the basis of deeds worthy of the poets. It is only later in the Classical era that the Greeks became self critical as we see in the poetic retellings of people like Euripides or the philosophizing of Plato.
    A couple of things: First, I think that Iphigenia was the daughter of Menelaus' brother, King Agamemnon (who led the Greek host in the war), and the sacrifice was the reason that Agamemnon was betrayed and murdered by his wife and her love after the war. Second, another really scuzzy person in the Greek roster was Neoptolemus, the son of Heracles, who butchered King Priam's remaining family before the king's eyes and then, sneering at propriety, killed the elderly king himself. It is true that the Trojans sinned against hospitality, a big offence against Zeus, in stealing Helen, but some of the members of the Greek roster are downright deplorable.

      @micah_raygun_  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't think I have any mods that affect how Sentinel stands out, but Cliffworms' Fixed Desert Architecture is a staple these days, and the DFU settings (after launching the app, but before opening Daggerfall) gives you the option to change the dungeon interiors to match the regions climate. I like playing with that enabled.
      You're right, Iphigenia was definitely Agamemnon's daughter. It's been a while since I've read this kind of lit and I wasn't planning on going on this rant in the video yet here we are 😅 Makes it even more messed up that someone else's daughter was killed to get Meneleus' wife back.
      There's actually a ton of vile skulduggery in Greek mythology--I think there's this trend where as a society gets more "advanced," they tend to get more at ease with carrying out treachery to get the desired results, and things like honor are not prioritized as highly.

    • @David_Alvarez77
      @David_Alvarez77 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@micah_raygun_ Thanks for the info on matching the dungeons to the climates, and I'll have to check about the desert architecture.
      On the topic of the the myths, I find it interesting how there are multiple variants of the story of Iphigenia's sacrifice to Artemis. In some, it is entirely Agamemnon's fault and doing. Others have Menelaus working to make sure that Agamemnon's second thoughts don't stop the sacrifice which Artemis demanded to get the winds blowing. Also, in some versions, Iphigenia is killed on the altar, but on others Artemis takes her away and replaces her with a deer. If I'm not mistaken, the versions where she lives on in a distant land are somewhat later.
      An interesting version of the story was written by the German Enlightenment author Goethe, which is worth checking out. It is kind of parallel to the version by Euripides.

    Daggerfall shop rundown
    “Rusty relics lie wherever they were last tossed. All the wares show the cracks and chips of shoddy workmanship. A mouse scampers over your feet before burrowing into a nearby sack."
    Worst quality store. Items here are generally of lowest-end materials. Lowest buying and highest selling prices, however. Best place to sell your unused items.
    "Sturdy shelves, cobbled together out of scrap lumber hold the shops wares. The items are sound and functional, but little more than that."
    Poor quality store. Low-end material items. Lower buying and higher selling prices.
    "The shop is laid out in a practical and straightforward manner. All the items seem to be of adequate construction."
    Average quality store. Mix of item material grades, average prices.
    "The shop is better appointed than many. Its wares lie neatly on the shelves. Although not fit for a king, all are skillfully crafted."
    Good quality store. High-end materials. Higher prices to buy, lower to sell.
    "Incense and soft music soothe your nerves as you cross the threshold. Each item in this shop is carefully mounted and displayed. Not the slightest defect can be detected in any item within."
    Best quality store. Items sold here are usually of the best materials you can acquire at your level. Buying prices are at the highest, selling prices are at their lowest. Best place to buy and/or steal goods.

    About your spell system: I am in the process of making my own rpg system for Warhammer. The goal is that it should be as easy, intuitive and efficient as possible. A large part of this has turned into realizing that when possible it is better to let players make up stuff they want instead of making rules for a gazillion spells/talents/skills/etc that never get used.
    So my casting system ended up as:
    1: Player makes up what he wants to cast based on the kind of caster he is.
    2: GM approves, if it fits the magic type of the caster, and sets a difficulty for it.
    3: Player can spend turns preparing the spell to lower the difficulty by paying Stress/Fatigue.
    4: Player rolls to cast it and GM describes effect based on the result of the roll.

    • @micah_raygun_
      @micah_raygun_  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks for the ideas!
      I also agree that keeping things streamlined and intuitive is important. Lately I've been leaning toward using a stamina/stress system instead of mana or spell slots so that casters and non-casters both have an additional resource to play with for their cool abilities.
      I like the idea of not having spells explicitly written out, as I don't really like learning about each spell that exists when learning a game, but my concern with doing away with pre-made spells entirely is that some players benefit from having a framework to play around in. It's also a bit difficult to scale spells that accomplish different things.
      For example, one player wants to cast a single target fire bolt spell that will do d6 damage on hit. Another player wants to leave a recorded voice-message that plays if someone opens a magazine to a certain page. How much does each spell cost?
      I think DM fiat is king in this style of play, but these kinds of ambiguities give me some pause when working on the system.
      Thanks for the ideas either way, I can see myself incorporating something very similar to the system you're describing when I'm testing Ammomancy c:

    • @Ralzar
      @Ralzar 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@micah_raygun_ The trick is really to not let players say *exactly* how the spell turns out. But rather give a general description of what they are trying to do. So the player would need to describe "I try to throw a fireball at the monster." and then you might follow up with "Is it a large fireball?" Does it explode?" and then that sets the difficulty.
      The player might then suddenly roll really well and the spell is way more effective than expected.
      Granted I am using the dice from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3ed where you might end up with results like "You succeeded very well, but it cost extra fatigue/stress and something went critically wrong." Which in this case might be that the fireball exploded and caused a negative effect in addition to causing a bunch of damage to the monster.

    Yoo Shiner Bock is my favourite beer. First one I ever had. Having that with some whiskey alongside is the best.
    I actually like Odysseus myself, and I never had an issue with the most clever of the Greeks pulling his trickery with the horse seeing as it was a 10 year war. The sacrifice of Agammemnon's daughter was ehhh (but in some stories she was saved by Artemis). At the end of the day a lot of this was the result of the gods having a spat that the humans were the means of settling. Odysseus was just a tool of the gods to have their will be done. Fated, I suppose. I disagree with calling him evil. He's not good, but I can't really condemn him. Spent a lot of time in uni writing on greek lit (and I grew up on it), so I am a bit opinionated.

    • @micah_raygun_
      @micah_raygun_  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm also a bit opinionated about the topic, as you can tell. We might have to agree to disagree on this particular subject, as I have a pretty broad net for what I consider to be evil. And it usually encompasses any blatantly selfish deed, especially if it involves deceit and cunning.
      I was really into Greek literature in college also, but it's been harder to get into lately. If anything, Odysseus's adventures spawned a whole slew of awesome stories and archetypes that will get revisited, reinterpreted, and recycled into new media until the end of humanity, so that's pretty cool if nothing else.

    Second comment here but I just watched the part about Odysseus: to add to his misbehaviour let's remember that he spent literal years with a woman before sailing towards home again. Dude was just a disaster.
    If you liked the Iliad and the Odyssey you should take a look at the Eneid, the Roman epic poem (I sec. BC) about a survivor of the Iliad war whose descendant would end up becoming the first Roman emperor (Augustus)

      That's possible, though it would be weird to get the note for Lhotun's quest before having the requisite level. I don't remember what my level was but we have the technology to go see lol. I read on uesp that you can't start the quest if you have negative rep with Lhotun, so I'm just assuming that it went like:
      Invited to the quest > caught stealing in a temple > negative rep > quest for nobility to improve rep
      I'm always down to talk RPG ideas, the hard part is finding the place to do it. We're most likely to bump into each other on discord servers I suppose
