I don't think the funeral planned by Pam was a prank but was actually sincere. I don't think she did the funeral specifically for Michael though, but for her old self and the old life she with Roy she is leaving behind. Pam is also going through a lot of emotions after Casino Night and this is her way to cope with Jim leaving

pam is a very empathetic and intelligent character and I think she catches on to how michael is projecting some deep issues that someone who held his job died and no one cares she begins to find a way to make him feel more impactful and meaningful through the bird.
I'm surprised people thought that this was a prank that Pam pulled. I always thought it was a combination of humouring him and being genuinely compassionate when she sees what Micheal is actually upset about. Thank you for being my Pam! ;_; we all need a bit more compassion these days...
Was Pam pranking Michael? I think she was showing authentic compassion and helping Michael sincerely yet at the same time enjoying some private humor about it.

I do think Pam was just recognizing what was really bothering Michael: He was afraid of dying alone. So she goes out of her way to assure him that he won't. I also believe that Michael is milking it as you note, he doesn't seem too upset until Kelly suggests it to him and he thinks he can get the women to feel sorry for him.
I don't think Pam was doing a prank. I just think she was acting like a mom calmly trying to go along with the childish reactions of Michael's ego and fears. She does it not only with Michael, but with everyone, trying to find a balance between everybody while she does so. That matches the moment she was living. I believe season 3 is so important for me because of all the growth she experiences. This is her season. Also, Pam is not that good at pranks.
I've watched this epi a ton of times and it has NEVER occurred to me that Pam was pranking anyone. I think that this was instead some character development showing that Pam cared about Michael and knew how to help him through it. Pranking was a shared activity with Jim and I don't see her doing all that without him. Smaller stuff, sure. She and Jim are the only ones savvy enough to pick up on Michael's real emotions.
Mulverine I think i’d give it a 4, just because of michael’s reaction. I think it’s a really funny setting to have the whole office actually laughing at one of his little skits. While michael thinks they are laughing with him, everyone else just thinks it’s funny because he’s clearly going through distress trying to land the joke
