ENGINE IS IN! More Progress On The 996 Carrera! There's Too Many "While You're In There" Things!

  • I've finally found some time to get the 996 back together. If you haven't seen the other videos on this car, I have a playlist dedicated to it here: • The 996 That Wasn't so...
This was a 996 I bought a while ago that wasn't supposed to be a big multi-month project, but turned into one. I feel like I'm over the hump. We are FINALLY reassembling the car. I don't like to rush anything on projects like this which is partly why these updates feel so spread out. However, Now that I have everything I need to go back together you may see the next update a bit sooner! I'm tired of pushing this car around!
In this video, I finish flushing the cooling system with my haphazardly conjured up rig, replace a few parts, and get the engine back into the car.
As always, I appreciate all the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
Catch you all on the next one!
    -Eric

Built the car around the vacuum line! I had an 84 Mercury Grand Marquis with a 302 and had to change the water pump. I'm pretty sure the assembly line started with that water pump hanging on a chain and Ford built the rest of the car around it!

    Nice.
I used to use cascade dishwasher soap powder, some old guy suggested it said it didn't bubble up like most soap and shouldn't cause issues later.

FWIW - When pulling out stuff that is routed over some things and under others like the brake booster pipe, I would attach some small diameter rope [or twine] to one end as I'm pulling out the other. An easy guide when rerouting.
It's also an easy way to get back to Grandma's house for some cookies and the mice can't eat the breadcrumbs.

Enjoying watching the progress on the 996. Your optimization phrases are the best. Reminds me of when I wrenched on my own vehicles!! Sometimes nice and gengtle. NOT so much other times. I won;'t stop watching the videos.
Teardowns with "Malice in the Combustion Palace" I look forward to the most. 😆

Kudos to you for keeping your cool seeing all that hack mastered sheet metal work on rear bumper assembly(maybe you lost it when you first saw it). I would have been expletive deleted all over the place after probably paying what you gave then discovering all this mess, especially the ballpeen action on rear channel. Some really unscrupulous people out there ,Great video series!

“While your in there” that’s how my bone stock except a dry shot of nitrous fox body went to a blown, stroked, forged, road race suspension, TKO 600 transmission mustang. I just went to change the intake. While you’re in there is the most dangerous 5 words to a car guy just doing a quick project on a Saturday and my car went from that intake being off and didn’t run again until it was finished, well it still had the stock transmission in it but I HAD to drive it and the TKO was over a month away I went through five stock (only good for 400 crank I have 600 wheel) junkyard transmissions waiting for that TKO

Big job and one day you will enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Thanks for sharing your talent and enjoy that bad boy.
PS. On one hand, I envy you having a professional lift as you do in your garage and another side of me is grateful for not owning one because many of us watching would be too tempted to pull engines more often versus roll the dice and pay a professional and its all a crap shoot when you do deep into any engine. The level of satisfaction you glean must be enormous, however.

Instead of using Simple Green or Dawn, which can make bubbles, use any generic dish washing detergent instead, the powder kind you put in your dishwasher. It's a pretty good de-greaser, doesn't make bubbles and rinses away with no residue...

As far as the booster hose, in manufacturing they refer to it as a layered build. A bit easier in the plant, but a real pain for repair.

crazy that brake booster line. i had something like that with my kia power steering line. original line was about 5 foot long and came in 2 pieces removing it required cutting, the replacement came as one solid line. well after removing the entire passenger side control arms, cv, spindle and struts it went in, easy peasy. love the videos, nice to see them going back together instead of always coming apart!

You might spend a little time to understand what it takes to prevent rust returning, otherwise you're wasting your labor IMO. Consider etching primer and/or two part epoxy primer. Then you can throw on whatever (cheap) single stage topcoat you want.

I like your lift table, its bigger and taller than the one I have, I’m looking around for a better one, but as you know they’re not cheap. Anyway, I’ve found that it is easier to keep the table low enough that you are able to reach up above the engine from a four wheeled shop chair. Lower the car as much as you can and then pump up the table so that the engine (suspension or whatever) is lifted into the vehicle. This way of doing it gives you much more control, especially if your doing it by yourself. That’s just my two cents ✌🏾

If anyone hasn't heard this about attaching rubber to metal, like hoses to tubing, or in our case, using it to install tires on motorcycle wheels - A little dish soap makes it a lot easier to slide the rubber on and when the soap dries it turns into a perfect bonding strength glue.

It looks like it was pushed or pried back into form from inside which likely has left some exposed metal. Is that an MX-6 on the adjacent lift?
