Porsche 911 996 Carrera Reassembly! IT RUNS, But I Lost Some Sleep Over The Littlest Thing

  • Finally, I have a 996 Update for you all! It feels great to make progress on this "not project car". This was a car I bought that only needed a few things... another engine out service later...
If you haven't seen the other videos on this car, they can be found here • The 996 That Wasn't so...
In this video I finish reinstalling the engine and transmission. Connecting everything from axles, to shifter cables, fuel lines, AC, power steering, harness, etc.
I made a mistake though. One that cost me some sleep. I wasn't thorough enough. I know better, but I should've done things in a different order.
I feel like anyone who has project cars runs into a similar "Oh I wish I looked here first" at least once in a while.
There's still a lot of work left, but it feels like the majority of it is done. Of course after this part of the car is finished there are a few cosmetic things that need done which I hope to get to in short order.
I'm really hoping to have this 996 wrapped up by the time the weather breaks as I intend to put some miles on it this year.
I hope you enjoyed this mid-week update. As always, I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
Catch you all on the next one!
    -Eric

This project reminds me of my "free" Audi TT. Its currently up on jack stands in my garage getting brakes, rear springs, rear shocks, new convertable top, valve cover gasket, power steering cooler. And who knows what else is going to pop up. But it's in great shape cosmetically and it's the big turbo version with the 6 speed manual so it should be a fun summer car.

With the amount of blue gasket seal (RTV) that you’ve found within the original oil filter, you should consider dropping the oil sump cover so that you can inspect the oil pick up screens. This is where RTV collects significantly. Last thing you want is heavy collection on those screens causing oil flow issues. My two cents.

I believe that any second-hand car is a project car in reality. As the previous owner grew accustomed to any imperfections the car had, those were overlooked. But the new owner spots them and, if he/she wants the car to run and look up to their own standards, that means work must be done. But yes: there are "imperfections" and then are things that represent a huge "oh, no..." still, is fun.

Red can well be liquid gasket (I think in the USA you call it RTV). Here in Italy that stuff is either black (lower temperature one, used to seal oil pan and so on) or red (check out "motorsil D"), higher temperature ones. I've seen also blue one, but it's darker and less gummy, look for Hylomar one, Rolls Royce approved (used in aviation too)

    • @willgallatin2802

Yes we call it RTV. Red is generally hi temp, blue is low temp, and grey is for the diff cover as it has better oil resistance.

Since you're going out of your way to replace the rubber hoses with OEM, it would nice to get rid of those aftermarket worm-drive clamps too. Best would be spring clamps, but you might have to pilfer some off a Silverado or Toyota.

The brown material in the filter looks like plastic shed from the cam chain guides. I found similar in my Boxster's oil filter, and the source turned out to be the Variocam ramps, which are (relatively) easy to change, but I think you'll have to pull the engine back out to do it on a 911.
The red and blue material looks like RTV shed from somewhere, to me. Maybe someone resealed the valve covers or sump, and used an improper type of sealant? You're supposed to use a Drei Bond type, which is brownish or black.

This is random but if the previous owner went to Walmart for an oil change they put a blue sealant on the oil drain plug. That way if the seal breaks, they know someone broke the seal and they wouldn’t take blame if the engine went bad and the customer tried to blame them. Some other shops do this as well, they may have got some of the sealant inside of the drain pan while putting the gasket on.

I am doing an engine swap right now on a '99 3.4 and found the donor engine filled with green rubber, damn variocam tensioners failed apparently and are $1400 each. These early 5 chain motors are torture.
My neighbor is buying a 1995 B10 3.0 allrad touring 5spd though, so that makes it all better

    • @miketdavies
      @miketdavies ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hopefully it's just the variocam tensioners, they aren't too bad. You can technically do them in the car. Cam chains are heads off, and IMS is split case, IIRC...
Those blue and red chunks aren't tensioner pads of any variety I've ever seen though.

    • @axispowerdiesel
      @axispowerdiesel ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@miketdavies A few things
Vario-cam tensioner pads are brown or white (if updated) and will cause excessive camshaft deviation when worn along with plastic in the filter
IMS is easily replaceable on all M96 variants, dual or single row with flywheel removed
The motor I am working on had the actual vario-cam actuator internal o-rings fail, which are green rubber and seal the actuator piston. They are not rebuildable sadly only replaceable.
Pads and complete actuator replacement is about the same, fully locked down removed motor on stand and all four camshafts removed....I hate these motors give me an M64 PLEASE . I have a nice 47k '97 3.6 going into a 80 targa g-body....air cooled or metzer turbo is the only way to go. M96/7 = VW trash

    • @miketdavies
      @miketdavies ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@axispowerdiesel ugh that's brutal. Pads as you know are easy/cheap - the whole unit going sucks!
I'm "rebuilding" an M96/03 long block right now (no case split planned, issue is a head crack). Agreed these motors are not, erm, the best design ever...
I'm refreshing a bunch of other "while you're in there's" too. Good to know I could do the IMS guides without splitting, was debating doing all the guides/tensioners. However, IMS itself is fine, EPS bearing replaced not too long ago, and the IMS guide was updated to the LN billet at the time, so I'd prefer to leave it alone!
Bentley and factory service manuals claim you can do the 3.4 variocam pads (including cam assembly removal) with the motor in the car, but you'd have to be insane to try it IMO!
      Good luck!

A shop vac set to blow is a better choice for blowing out a mid or rear engine cooling system---more volume at much lower pressure. Also, make sure the system gets hot enough so that the thermostat opens. Rule of thumb is two activations of the rad fans. And if the system still has an actual heater control valve, make sure you slide the heater temp control to max heat.

    • @TestECull

Couple of things from one 996 owner to another - VW sells the proper coolant, premixed, for less than Porsche. When the key becomes difficult to turn in the ignition, and it will, the VW part costs a great deal less and is OEM quality - don't buy aftermarket! Be careful drawing vac on the coolant system, sometimes hoses aren't happy with that and there's TONS of them on this car! Lastly, did you run the heat while flushing the coolant system? Get the heater core cleaned out too!
Oh one more thing, the radiators up front have plastic O-ringed ends on aluminum cores. Sometimes the tabs loosen and they leak. Not too bad to fix but you can also get straight aluminum aftermarket units to replace (for a price). Enjoy!

the red and blue, i havent followed along from the start but felpro uses valvecover and oil pan gaskets that usually have a blue lining and red is usually a front or rear main seal

38:40 Years ago , could get a Tee that conected to heater hose, would connect water supplt to the Tee (garden hose), and a flush the system, Water would flow OUT of the removed radiator cap.

There's a LOT of coolant to flush in this motor, 24-32L depending on wet/dry case. The runs to the front rads and back hold a bunch. Not sure that method would work here.

Amazing that filter wasn't changed from before. Cost about $10 and so easy to do. I change my oil every 4k miles but change the filter at 2k just to see that everything is ok. Those blue chips? Haven't seen light blue RTV before but I don't get out much either. The other debris in the filter, pretty small but could be VarioCam pads. I changed my bank 1 pads with engine in the car and it was not hard at all. Haven't done bank 2 yet though but it doesn't seem to need it.

Seems that both blue and red (low and high temp) RTV found a way to the filter.....maybe?

It looks like the blue particles could be paint chips, Are the block or pan Interiors coated? They also could be small bits of sealant or O rings. Both of those items can be blue. There was nothing showing in the 10 minute clean oil run. I would put it back in run the engine a few more times bringing it up to temperature. Check filter after each heat cycle. You are flushing the coolant anyway so processing the oil is not a huge addition. If after 3rd check filter looks good change out to your intended in service oil & filter. System will be as clean as possible without disassembly. Good luck, from the first quick change evidence things look good.

4:31 Easy thing about this is the assembly can rotate, so once you get a couple started just spin the tire and rotate the next bolt down to the bottom where access is plentiful! Better than that clutch slave...

When are we getting a video on that sweet MX-6 GT on the next lift? That was my second car growing up and have a lot of good (and bad lol) memories with those. Still have a weird obsession with them and search for listings every now and then.

In case you weren't aware of your Milwaukee stubby impact it's fourth power feature is to tighten fasteners cut off the power at 10 ft lb so it's convenient to be able to use the impact for installation and not to break or strip tiny bolts.

Best way to inspect oil filter is to cut the ends off with utility knife. That way whole filter material unfolds for easy inspection.

Oh and I'd definitely drop the pan and check the oil pickup. If that filter was *that* bad, who knows if the pickup is as clogged.
(No idea if it's even remotely easy to do in these Porsche engines)

0:42 You and I are both in similar spots. I just got an engine to put in my 85 F150. Gonna be doin' the ol' 300 swaparooni here either this weekend or next.
If I was local I'd bring the old engine to ya for a video, but alas, crating and shipping a 300 longblock all the way you to just to have you tear it down for a video then crate it back up and ship it back to me(As I plan on overhauling it/putting it back in) would cost a fortune...prolly the only way you'll ever get a 300, though, is if one of us donates one haha.

When I first saw this video posted I thought sounds interesting but man this is just another one of those long videos that couldn't be done in 20min? I've got a long honey list to do. Didn't want to miss any of the good stuff so I thought I'd just fast forward over the mundane stuff. Never did and the next thing I know you're signing off and we don't have the wheels back on...well you've got me hooked when's the next video? When do we get this baby out for a shake down cruise? Do a little drifting or red line shifting. Looking forward to it. 2👍.

I heard from a German technician one time that organic coolant will eat the sealants they put the heater core and radiator together with. My sisters Jetta had a core failure blowing coolant on the windshield, first thing I saw was green coolant in the reservoir... after the G12 went back in and a fresh core, the radiator failed at the tank seam...
