Wow! Me grandad was Station Master there during the war (when MacArthur went thru, grandad didn't think much of him).. Terowie station was well kept, til the late 70s.
Mum & Nanna were born there, other grandad was in the Transhipping...
His house was the old bank on the corner 9:36+...
Over the road, that paddock was full of 1930s & 40s cars, piled 3 high...l had a collection of hood ornaments, sadly left in his shed when they left in 77..
The station didn't rot away, the bloke who bought it pulled all the iron lacework, metal doors & crushed those cars for scrap.
It was once a bustling town...I'd get a little bag of free lollies from Joe Madigans shop..cakes at Maloney's just for carting Nannas shopping!
Thanks for the clip mate, brought back a mob of memories.
    Ill show me mum tomorrow!

The reason that the park in the centre of town has so much play equipment is because a few years before the school closed down they got a upgrade from old stuff to new stuff and after they closed down it got donated so it would be able to continue being used i think around 2007 or 2008 the school got it i was a student there for a few years grew up there thanks for the video its been the deciding factor to go back there and have a look its been 13 years so it brought back so many memories glad to hear that the post office is still running the painting on the side of it locals and some of the kids help do while its only a small place there is a lot of history there

The wool collapse that happened in 1988, really hit rural Australia rather hard, and the rainfall shadow in that area goes from Orroro across to jamestown and then Burra. Terowie is grazing only, and very marginal at that. That part of South Australia can be viciously cold in winter........I have seen -8C at Yunta, and Whyte Yarcowie just up from Terowie holds some record I think for hottest and coldest extreme temperature range. In summer, the wind blows from the north, north west and its like a fan forced oven..........in winter if the wind blows from the south, its very cold.

The end of the Transhipping is what killed Terowie.
The Main road was the Highway, once it bypassed town... All those blokes were out of work, so most left.

I stayed in Burra (well worth a stay) but missed Terowie on the drive to Broken Hill and back to the Hunter - not sure why maybe just in a hurry. No one does rural like South Australia. Interesting old place Terowie. The main street is the original road from Adelaide to Broken Hill (then onto Brisbane). My late father-in-law (RIP) worked for the railways at Terowie, and he said that all the freight from one gauge wagon to the next gauge was transferred by hand and it was a big job to transfer it over as quick as possible. He said then when transferring the cartons of beer there used to be some handling "accidents" resulting in breakages. Great video, thanks for being honest and open.

The campground at the railway station/yard looked pretty reasonable. That was really funny....your reference to "Broad Gauge". Bertha is still laughing about that. I told Bertha you said "BROAD gauge not THICK gauge". It reminds me of a story about a railway station. Keep up the good work. You are all looking well. Travelling obviously agrees with you all. You can't beat Christmas Day for a fun-filled occasion with lots of grate food, prawns, crayfish tales, roast loin of pork, Italian salami, German Potato Salad, plum pudding with brandy custard, beers a plenty, bourbons by the glass full, etc. If you know where this happening then please send me the address because it sure as hell ain't happening at my address with Bertha taking control of the kitchen.

Living in the town? As people come and go it's impossible to gauge an accurate number however in the entire shire (which includes the properties that are situated outside of town) there are 131 people according 2016 census).

Yes, The "clean up" was pathetic, after they realised they could never do it the council just took legal precautions and put up some little warning signs you be hard pressed to find.
It took us years to get a response, only after we entered council office with 7:30 reporters did they even take note.
The train line is technically now in the hands of department of environment and heritage, so the council has wiped their hands of it.
