I am a Cuban and growing up my family would eat Cuban bread, soaked in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with crushed garlic. Then we added sliced tomatoes with salt and ate it as a sandwich. I never understood why we ate this until I saw this clip. Les Blank has to be one of the most thorough documentarians to be able to find this obscure Spanish dish.
meanwhile in leningrad people had already eaten all pets and most boots. In any case, such is the opinion of a guy who knows how to eat well. we should all be striving to enjoy many foods

As I watched this video the terrible famine he described seemed less and less terrible. It's not much of a famine really if they had tomatoes and garlic... and bread... and if there wasn't enough olive oil to put on their tomatoes and garlic bread they used butter and vinegar... and salt!
It's a traditional Catalan food, didn't know (or if it did) emerge from the Civil War. When I was there they would simply rub (not chop) tomatoes onto a baguette or slice of bread, drizzle with oil (I imagine vinegar could replace oil) and then top with salt. The tomato was thrown away. I've never seen a more wasteful food in all my life and the thought of it still makes me sad...
exacto. girl is too annoying to miss the point, but then again shes trying to do research. these people u let tell the story to then wonder about the point
I'm watching this during the panic buying where a**holes are hoarding all fruits and veg, down to every clove of garlic....right now, garlic is as good as ten mothers, without it life is not the same. Not to mention want for food....take me to the Spanish Civil War, I guess.
