Keep in mind that the participants of the show haven't studied the Portuguese language before so their conversation with Gui is possible thanks to the mutual intelligibility between Romance languages phenomenon only. That makes the game extra challenging. The participants couldn't see the captions while taking part in the challenge. They had to rely on understanding spoken Portuguese only. I'm Romanian and I'm honestly surprised how easily I can follow the conversation. I do not speak either Spanish or Portuguese, but I could still 100% follow the conversation without the subtitles! Ahaha, what a pleasant surprise!
Me as a Brazilian who tried to learn a bit of romanian, I can say that I could never follow a romanian conversation without subtitles and very slow speaking!
Amazing! I've tried listen to some Romanian podcasts a long time ago. I understood like 5% of the language (lol), but I was still able to catch some random words to form a context. (Im brazilian)

Chilean sounds a lot like the Argentinian dialect. The most peculiar feature for me is the way they replace final 's' sounds with a soft 'h' sound: los chicos -> loh chicoh :)

I could listen to Brazilian Portuguese all day. I don't understand everything, but that doesn't matter, it's like honey on my ears.
I am Brazilian and it is amazing to me to see that normally a person who speaks portuguese can understand pretty well who speaks Spanish but the opposite is not that easy. I mean, in average... It seems, in this particular video, that the Mexican and Chilean guys are more used to understand portuguese than the Spanish girl... But all of them were great. I can tell you as a Polish speaker not knowing much of either Spanish or Portugese but interested in latin and knowing English well, that Spanish sounds very clear with every word matching almost perfectly to subtitles, letting me know what is it about from sheer context. Portugese on the other hand is quite hard to grasp, maybe it's just the matter of Brazilian pronunciation, I don't know. I don't really hear when one word ends and the other starts, many sounds are quite unclear, words seems to be cut with endings not pronounced fully and consonants being softened in different ways depending on their position between sounds, pronunciation of words doesn't match with subtitles because of all that.
The reason why the intelligibility is not 100% mutual is because Portuguese (especially many varieties of Brazilian Portuguese) have multiple possible sounds for each letter, while Spanish is less flexible. The word "difícil" is spelt exactly the same in both languages, but in Brazilian Portuguese, the D doesn't make an easily recogniseable D sound and the L doesn't make an L sound; at least not the same sounds as in the word "lado", for example. So a Portuguese speaker can hear the word "difícil" in (Latin American) Spanish and recognise the D and L from "lado", picturing the spelling of the word in their mind. Meanwhile, a Spanish speaker is asking themselves what the hell is "yifisiu".
@@augustodaro2208 that could be Augusto. Brazil could be easily 10 or more European or Latin American different countries. It has 27 States and each of them has a different pronunciation (and a few words of local vocabulary as well)... I, sometimes, have a hard time to understand some people from northeastern states for example (I am from São Paulo State)... But, the main reason why the mutual intelligibility isn't easier, is due to the fact that the Spanish speakers have less contact with Portuguese than the other way around. Brazil and Portugal are "islands" surrounded by "Hispanicity". It's true that Brazil has borders with some countries who do not speak Spanish such as french Guiana for example, but they are small and don't have any influence on our commerce and culture...
@@rodrigofernandesgoncalves9564 it’s true. Spanish is very diverse, but the differences are mainly in vocabulary and prosody and not so much in the pronunciation.
@@augustodaro2208 Exactly what I meant. And for example sometimes what I hear D is pronounced as soft G, plus E can also sound like English E, so I see present in I think all romance languages word 'de', but I hear something close to 'jeeh'.

Entender é fácil.Conversar com um nativo já é bem diferente.Temos que lembrar que esses participantes são pessoas instruídas que falam de forma lenta e pronunciam cada palavra.Na vida real a coisa muda.Eles usam muitas gírias,expressões ,comem letras etc.É a mesma coisa do Brasil.

Eu consigo entender muito bem os vídeos de Mexicanos falando em espanhol também, e da Argentina tambem é bem mais fácil... Já da espanha e de outros países latinos são mais difíceis.

Corrección: los hispanohablantes y los lusoparlantes o lusófonos. (Ya que existen 8 países de lengua portuguesa). Aunque la comprensión es parcial y asimétrica.
Estos participantes no están hablando como en la vida real. Hablan pausado y articulado para asegurar la comprensión, y a pesar de todo, será más fácil para un lusófono entender a un hispanohablante que al revés, porque hay ciertos sonidos de la lengua portuguesa que no existen en la lengua española/castellana.

Foi por causa das novelas brasileiras que começou meu interesse por estudar português.
Es muy fácil entender a este brasileño porque tiene una dicción perfecta y además no habla con la velocidad acostumbrada. Yo hablo portugués y español perfectamente pero suelo ver mucha dificultad para que los hispanos entiendan a los brasileños y no lo contrario. A los brasileños les resulta muy fácil de entender a los hispanos. Esto es debido a la extremadamente compleja fonética del portugués y la relativamente simple del español. En cuanto a la comprensión de lo escrito se podria decir que son mutuamente inteligibles, pero tampoco es tanto como esto.
A los españoels nos cuesta entender a los portugueses. Por algún motivo, nos es muhco más fácil entender a los brasileños. De todas formas, esta conversación era muy fácil. Yo no tengo ni idea de portugués, pero entedí facilmente entre el 90 y el 95% de lo que estaba diciendo el chico brasileño. La chica española se nota que no entendía mcuhas cosas, y creo que debe de ser dura de oído, porque reitero, aunque por lo general nos cuesta bastante entender el portugués, esta conversación en concreto era facilísima y se entendía practicamente todo sin ningún problema.
@@goodaimshield1115 puede ser que por la posición geográfica haya entendido menos. A los latinoamericanos, colijo, se nos es más fácil entender el portugués brasileño y quizás la misma analogía podría aplicarse remotamente con España-Portugal.

The Brazilian guy has an accent from São Paulo, which is very clearly spoken and standard. He also spoke quite slowly and tried to use words that are cognates in both languages. This made it easier for the Spanish speakers to understand. Although Latin American soaps weren’t a big success in Brazil, there are exceptions like “Carrossel” (Mexican) and “A Usurpadora” (Venezuelan). And some did relatively well like “Betty, A Feia” (Colombian). But Brazilians tend to prefer national soaps.
It depends on what part of São Paulo we are talking about, friend!! From most parts of the capital, the accent is pretty much Ok. But from the country people (caipirês), sorry, they're not "clearly spoken" at all.

As a person that speaks Italian, I feel like the more I read Portuguese, the more I understand it. Spanish is way easier to understand even while the natives where speaking, however, I had to read the Portuguese subtitles to understand what was going on. Very interesting video!

Spanish and Portuguese are remarkably identical...Italian while similar, belongs to a different linguistic subgroup. It diverges considerable from Spanish and Portuguese in vocabulary and grammar, an sentence structure. Italian is a horse of a different colour. But the Portuguese and Spaniards are Iberian brother languages with 90% of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure in common, thats' why they can communicate easily each speaking in his own language to the other.

I am from the USA. I speak English and French. I was able to understand quite a bit of it with my French. That surprised me a little, even though they are related through Latin.
I'm Brazilian, but I don't understand French at all. It is the most difficult Latin language for us. Spanish and Italian are much more similar to Portuguese.
@@dancsgeo French just have a comeplete different pronunciation,nis so damn hard to get anything they say. Written French is nowhere as easy as Portuguese (hell, I've sometimes been reading in Portuguese without even noticing it was Portuguese and not Spanish) nor Italian, but we do understand quite a bit, and usually we can get a quite general idea about what the text is about. However, spoken French is just... imposible. I mean, I do understand it, but I took 4 years of French, so I actually understand French because I do know French, but any Spanish speaker (and I bet any Portuguese or Italian speaker) that has not actively study French will only understand random words and phrases here and there. The pronunciation is just completely different, and very hard to understand unless you have studied it or have had close contact with the language.
As a native Spanish speaker I would say I understood pretty much everything Guilherme said, I feel like any mistakes would have come from the clues' being a bit non specific. There were a few words here and there that would have been hard to understand or that would mean something slightly different, but otherwise, with Guilherme's speaking so slowly and clearly, and with his repeating important words and phrases and providing synonyms, everything he said was understandable.

Son muy diferentes! Hablamos a distintos ritmos/velocidades, utilizamos palabras diferentes, y existe mucha jerga no solo local, sino regional, lo que lo hace incluso más difícil, pero a la vez interesante!

Yo he visto "O clone" y me encantó! Eso era la única telenovela brasileña que he visto y no se si las otras mencionadas son similares, pero me gustó porque era diferente de las telenovelas latinoamericanas, especialmente en aspecto de la profundidad de los temas incluidos (drogas, cuestión ética de clonación,.. y bueno al final lo que no puede faltar - un tema de amor, pero aquí era una amor entre las personas de diferente culturas y religión).

Yep. Telenovelas were a big thing back in the day in the Philippines. We even had local adaptations of them. But now, most series we watch are from our Asian neighbors.

As a Spanish speaker, as long the Portuguese speaker speaks slowly (like the guy in the video) you can understand almost everything, up to 95%. Now, when they speak at a fast pace, it's very hard to understand. Written Spanish and Portuguese are almost the same, I would say, one can understand 99%.

I would love to see videos like these with languages where people can understand each other with a certain level of comprehension, like Norwegian and Swedish, for example. Or Dutch and Afrikaans.
Ya, really interesting. I understand a bit of Swedish, Norwegian and Dutch when I read it, but when people talk I only understand a little. But as I have studied Spanish I have had nice conversations with people in Italy when on holiday there, me speaking Spanish.
When I visited Sweden about 3 decades ago, there were quite a lot of Swedes who spoke German. Less than 10 years ago in Östersund, there was hardly anyone who was even able to speak English when I asked for information.

I think this connection that we speakers of romance languages have is very interesting, they are intelligible languages, the understanding between us is very good. Whether in Iberoamerica or europe, Latin languages are very well matched.

O Clone and Avenida Brasil are legendary ones for me. But my all-time favourite brazilian soap opera is Chocolate com Pimenta: old Brazil (1920s), old cities, old clothes, the beautiful Brazilian countryside, everything was so beautiful and the story so ❤😔 Wish TV Globo could release it in DVD format or something, I'd love to watch it again 😭 The Spanish dub was so well done too, it's worth mentioning. And I love Mariana Ximenes, such a gorgeous actress! Nobody could have played the role of Aninha as good as her! 😭❤
It’s really amazing to have people speaking the same language and come different regions. Keep doing that because it bring awareness to other regions but that also shows how diverse Spanish can be expressed.

Speaking it is a different matter altogether, you would not be able to. But the Portuguese and Spanish speakers speak to one another in their own language and understand each other almost perfectly - only the Portuguese and Spanish speakers can do this, as Portuguese and Spanish are basically dialects of 1 same Iberian root language. They do not have to learn each others language to communicate with each other right away, and in large measure be very well understood. Italian differs too much and thus can't do what the Spanish and Portuguese speakers do.
During the 90s ans 00s there was actually a good number of latin american soap operas imported to Brasil, and many of them were very succesful, like La Usurpadora (it was reprised at least 5 times), Betty La Fea, La Fea Más Bella, Luz Clarita, El Diario de Daniela, Rebelde, Carrusel, Maria la del Barrio, Maria Mercedes, Marimar, Esmeralda, Ruby, and so on. Though more recently, from the 10s to now they're losing popularity to the Turkish soap opera, as they said in the video.

Acho que uns 10 anos atrás eu fui junto com minha irmã em Armação dos Búzios no Rio de Janeiro e lá tinha muitos turistas argentinos. O que achei estranho foi que quando interagia com eles, nós entendiamos eles, mas eles não entendiam nós.
Es verdad soy argentino y para brasileros es muy fácil entender español pero para los españoles hablantes es más complicado, por que en español usamos 32 sonido para hablar y en portugués utiliza más de 41 sonidos para hablar. Hay 10 sonidos Mais que en español no existen y por eso es complicado entender cuando hablan portugués .
En español la pronunciación siempre es la misma usted puede hablar con un mexicano o un argentino o venezolano siempre es la misma pronunciación, cambian las palabras usamos sinónimos, en los Españoles ellos pronuncian la z y en Latinoamérica pronunciamos la s y la z.

That was a fun video. Spanish speakers are able to understand Portuguese with some effort. It is possible to have an entire, engaging conversation even without huge knowledge about the other language.
This is off topic, but just as a curious fact, Brazilian soap operas used to be really really popular, with very high tv ratings,until the mid 90's. After the new millenium, they have been slowly losing popularity in its home market and as a consequence also lost some international market. Probably due to the popularity of the internet and streaming services among younger audiences
Some say that for brazilians the european spanish is the easiest, some say it is the mexican. But we can all agree that the chielan is definitely the hardest 😅

I can not understand why people find argentinean spanish so hard. The sound they use for ll makes it closer to portuguese and easier to understand. Chileans on the other hand hardly pronounce the last letters of every single word, speak the fastest I have ever seen and 4 out of 5 words are just bizarre slangs on day to day conversations.

I've been learning Portuguese (BR) for just a few days, and I am already surprised at how easy it is to follow the conversation. Of course the man is speaking pretty clear, and slow but I am still proud that I could understand the conversation, and even got all the answers right! This is definitley a great video!

I am a native speaker of Spanish and I can understand Portuguese to a high degree. The similarities are not only in grammar and vocabulary but also in the expressions used in both languages.
This could be the Romance equivalent of Scandinavian languages understanding each other.
Something interesting that I have noticed is that Portuguese speakers who learn Spanish many times retain their tonality/accent while speaking Spanish, even if they've been speaking Spanish for years.
The same is true for most Spanish speakers who learn Portuguese ;)

I like how the Spanish from Spain has such a different pronunciation from Mexico and Chile. The Spain spanish has more of f sound pronounced with the tongue between the teeth.
