    Hi John - I have studied with Robert Morse ND for the last few years and I believe that the thinness and gauntness some folks experience on a raw food diet is directly related to malabsorption in the gut. Dr. Morse talks about malabsorption as the mucus congestion in the GI system which blocks the nutrient absorption. It occurs from eating a Standard American Diet for most of our lives before starting a health program. A good resource to learn about malabsorption is Dr. Kelly's "One Answer to Cancer" book found for free on the web. I see a lot of raw foodists pounding nutrition and still remaining ultra thin. This is very worrisome to their family members. Moving the lymphatic congestion throughout the body appears to be the only way to fix the malabsorption problem. Dr. Morse's "Great Lymphatic System" video elaborates on this process. Grapes, citrus and melons appear to be the most effective foods in accomplishing this task. In my opinion, what some people online have labeled as "Rope Worms" is really all this gunk keeping nutrition from being assimilated into the body. Once this deep cleansing process occurs I have found that being a perfectionist with food (measuring calories, making sure it's pristine and organic) isn't as important. I always advocate finding the cleanest, highest quality "hydrating, living foods" to keep the lymph system moving but do not believe that "raw" is the best/only way to go since there are so many dehydrated, raw junk foods and gourmet foods out there. Another reason why some raw foodists look older is because they don't understand how their endocrine glands work. In order to improve overall health we must address all four processes - Digestion, Absorption, Utilization and Elimination. If we don't improve glandular function then we cannot properly utilize our nutrition. Supplements might prop up lab levels but we haven't fixed the underlying problems. Once we improve things like adrenal gland function then the body's lymphatic system improves and healthy energy and appearance follow. B-12 also normalizes as it is manufactured in healthy adrenal glands. This regeneration process can take anywhere from 1-5 years so it's important to document positive benefits along the way to stay motivated. Thanks for doing what you do and for being an ambassador for vibrant health : )

      ***** But every other raw foodist I've seen doesn't have that much weight? And many have been that way for years. How does metabolism slow down?

      +Tom's Guitar and Garden This is definitely dependent on the individual and this is just my opinion but I can definitely say that I require less food now than I did 3 years ago when I started eating more raw, living foods. I don't actually think it is a function of a slowing metabolism though. My metabolism and energy levels are much, much higher than they were a decade ago. I think my reduced dietary intake needs are more of a function of eating lots of astringent cleansing foods (like grapes, citrus and melons) which have cleaned out a lot of the mucus gunk that was keeping me from properly absorbing my nutrition. I liken this gunk to paper mache (the flour & water art project). All this mucus keeps the body from assimilating the nutrition leaving us overfed and undernourished. When we are absorbing well we'll feel nourished/satisfied on less food. When we heal our adrenal glands we normalize our blood sugar metabolism which allows us to keep blood sugar stable for longer periods of time. Hope this helps!

    I got 18 points on Health from the video. I enjoyed how the simple question garnered so many positive answers. For me the one over arching thought was, "You can't build health without managing your lacks. Your chain of health is only as good as your weakest link." This is my first time on your channel. Lou Corona!!! Hit the nail on the head . I eat a plant based diet ... I struggle always with the harsh judgement that comes out of vegan / raw vegan ... some of the most violent with their words people I have ever met have been vegans . Save the animals but tear apart other humans ... absolutely this is the lack of health ... health starts with what is in our heart . If one does not love other human beings than any of the pious reasons to not eat meat they may want to convince another of .
    Listening to our bodies ... there is not a one size fits all .

      tanya shaw unfortunately, this is very true. I have worked in customer service for 30 years....since I was 17. 13 years of that was in a Co-op, and some of the rudest, angriest, pushy and demanding customers are those who have a diet with a cause (which could be religious as well). It’s amazing how quickly they turn upon others to get what they want.

    Wow, thank you for this very informative video! Many mushrooms (most edible ones) should be cooked, usually at high heat, to be useful in the human diet, and to be eaten in any meaningful amount. To raise vitamin D levels of mushrooms, they should be exposed to the sun for a few hours before cooking. Morels should never be eaten raw as they are toxic in this state. Grocery store 'champignons de Paris', crimini portobello (all the same mushroom in different colors/stages) are slightly toxic eaten raw, but anticarcinogenic when heated at high temps. Since mushrooms are legitimately the 'fruit of the forest', and legitimate ethical and cruelty-free yet delicious flesh, as an aspiring fruitarian (as Jane Goodall is an aspiring vegan?) and a lover of the forests and fine cuisine, I cannot conceive becoming entirely raw because of mushrooms. However, I can conceive of a diet where I eat more or less 'sun': fruits, nuts, leafy greens, sprouts etc during the day, and 'moon' in the evening: mushrooms, roots, potatoes, fermentations, spices, cooked and raw.... Also, fruitarians and vegans generally should be aware of the power of herbs, and include them in a relaxed but consistent fashion into their daily diet. I am thinking, for example, of parsley, oregano, celery leaf, sage, olive leaf, cilantro, ginger, turmeric, cayenne, etc... We shouldn't turn up our noses at eating commestible clays either if we need to detoxify our inner environments from laissez-faire industrialization in a hurry. Peace! Save the forests, become a locavore vegan! Grow a garden, not a dictatorship!

    I loved this video
    thank you for making it, okraw. I think everyone had valid points. I'd also like to say that the detoxing that happens when going raw after many years of a SAD can bring on some unwanted effects, like not looking or feeling so good. Also, parasites can be a situation that adds to loss of so much weight that people want to feed you stuff you know would only feel worse. I think the main focuses should be, as Mr. Corona said, our spiritual paths (not judging others but working on ourselves), and the lymph system.....Also, assuring there are many good quality foods in the diet and foods that keep parasites at bay and to assure that we are eliminating and especially when dislodging old stuff from intestines.This experience in itself can retoxify the bloodstream. The point is to persevere and not give in to cravings, because those cravings could be resulting from starving parasites begging for their old diet of stuff they loved.

    I really liked your answers John. They were deep, insightful and felt like they were full of authentic compassion. However, I wish that just ONE person had the courage to say that the reason some raw foodists look unhealthy is because not everyone should be a raw foodist. There never has been and never will be a one size fits all for human beings and spiritual health is just as important as physical, mental and emotional health. Spiritual health makes it possible for us to respect the variety in nature manifested and expressed by the Divine Intelligence of the universe. As a vegan and mostly raw foodist myself, I believe we need to stop saying that eating meat is bad because a large portion of all beings on the planet eat flesh and I include them as part of my earth family. Great video and thumbs up for the guy who said you can't judge a book by it's cover. That pretty much sums up how we can truly start living healthier lives on this beautiful planet.

    As so many other people who look unhealthy, raw foodists looking unhealthy do not listen to their bodies and maybe stick to a certain diet somebody prescribes them instead of tweaking their diet to their needs. 80/10/10 e.g. may not be for all, maybe it is 70/15/15 or 70/10/20 for some.
    Some raw foodists go crazy on monomealing and try to outdo each other on how many days they can go on watermelon etc. I even talked to a guy who said the ONLY raw vegan way to go was 600-800kcals of greens and sunlight. When I asked a few critical questions because I wanted to know if he could exercise with such calory deficiency he said this discussion was way too stupid for him.
    I started to doubt raw food because I met so many people who did not use their common sense any longer and did not want to see that to eat a raw foods diet you must be willing to learn more and more about food and your body every single day.
    I am happy that I found your channel because you do not just promote a lifestyle, you transport knowledge about raw foods in an understandable common sense way.

    You are very thorough and for that deserve high praise. It took a lot of work and it shows in the results.
    Disclaimer: I am not a raw foodist but I am eating a lot more raw veggies daily now, for weight control, disease prevention and of course appearance.
    When it comes to basic conversation in social settings, I believe many people are ignorant of many of the intricacies of manners, one of which is to not to criticize other people's appearances. I think it is fine to make a comment about an appearance as long as it is made clear the comment is a compliment. In addition, it's hard for people to understand all the rules of manners so we can educate them. We've all hurt people without knowing it and we'd love to know when we do it so we can avoid in the future.
    However, there still are going to a few people who are resentful. They have insecurities so deep seated they need to insult others to feel better about themselves.
    The ideas I heard in the video are: raw foodists are actually healthy compared to others, but not 'normal' because they way less, and many people oversimplify that not being normal is being unhealthy (which is wrong).
    Also, some people started sick /unhealthy, and haven't had enough time to receive positive health benefits to show in their appearance.
    Some raw foodists may eat very unhealthy raw food products too much. In addition, some may miss some key vitamins such as vitamin D and B12, which aren't obtained naturally without care by vegans.

    What about raw grains? I have yet to find a raw vegan who consumes some sprouted raw grains and legumes. I am transitioning to a mostly raw diet and those are the two factors that are holding me back. I currently have very little income and I'm trying to have a great diet on such a tiny budget. I currently eat foods with only roughly $40 allotted for each week's groceries. I know consuming some grains and legumes will help balance my budget while also making the transition more easy. Are there any raw foodists here or mostly raw vegans who eat some grains or legumes? If so, any advice or resources would be much appreciated.

    • @okraw

      +Nicole Manuel, CPC (The Personal Eco-nomist) In some raw food circles, higher sprouted grains or sprouted legumes are consumed. Many legumes are not edible raw (even if sprouted). I would encourage a 80% raw (fruit and veg based) along with 20% (or more) sprouted and steamed beans with some sprouted and cooked grains if you need it.

    • @NicoleManuel
      @NicoleManuel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Currently I can not afford 100% raw and live too much on the road to be able to grow anything myself. I purchase my organic produce through local food coops and health food stores. I do not earn enough to sustain eating both organic and fully raw. I use grains and legumes to offset the financial costs and also as a transitional tool. I am aware that many legumes and grains can not be eaten raw; however, do you recommend not eating any sprouted grains and legumes raw? What are the benefits to sprouted raw vs sprouted cooked?

    • @user-xx7pg3vw9k
      @user-xx7pg3vw9k 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nicole Manuel, CPC (The Personal Eco-nomist) sprouting deactivates a toxic enzyme in grains and beans. Steaming enhances the nutritional availability after sprouting so it is a win win scenario.

    • @NicoleManuel
      @NicoleManuel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tiffany Boone So you would recommend steaming grain and bean sprouts instead of just eating them raw?

    • @user-xx7pg3vw9k
      @user-xx7pg3vw9k 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes because those things are actually easier to digest when lightly cooked due to ridding them of the toxic enzymes that would otherwise prevent nutrition uptake. If you are healthy and just want to be healthier..that is a good way to go. I would, however, get into wheatgrass (growing and juicing). If you do it yourself..it's pretty cheap. I bought a great hand crank juicer for $23 and it's perfect for wheatgrass. I bought a 35LB bag of wheat berries for $35. Great considering the powder is $20!

    I met a guy who tried raw food for a while and gave up and totally bashes it. He said he became seriously underweight and had bad skin. So I asked him what he´d eat in a day. He was avoiding fruits because "sugar makes you fat, duh", and he was eating mostly greens, less fats...I estimated his daily intake to be no more than 500-700 calories. So yeah, on the raw food diet, some people overeat on nuts, and overall too many calories, while some people just seriously undereat.

    started my raw food journey 2.5 months ago and love it. I have lost weight on this diet but slowly I do not want to lose it to fast. I eat a lot of veggies of all kinds different ones everyday. and sometime I have a green smoothie or a fruit smoothie, every morning or I eat a oatmeal with fruit in the morning called a fridge rated oatmeal yes its still raw. by Christina's videos. lots and lots of water and exercise daily. since I started this diet I sleep like a baby and feel great. I sometimes tingle a good tingle love this diet. the tingle sometimes just feels so good. I know I have a long journey ahead of me but I am motivated and excited about the future. love this diet. learning more recipes everyday.

    I have certainly seen plenty of people go on raw vegan diets that degrade very quickly, and others that thrive on raw foods. I am a firm believer that we are all wired very differently. I went raw vegan years ago thinking that it would improve my health and I went downhill FAST, within a month I was completely disabled yet people kept telling me that I would adapt but I could not take it anymore. I went the opposite direction and got on a keto diet and every marker of health improved within a week, and by time the one month mark passed I had lost exactly 20lbs, my blood pressure dropped a whopping 62 points, I was sleeping much better at night, my crazy bouts of deep depression disappeared completely, and my lifelong struggle with reactive hypoglycemia was not even a minor concern. Long story short we are all very different and there is no one diet that is ideal for all people, those who teach such nonsense are simply ignorant, find what works for you.

    Thin but soft, sunken darken eyes, discolored teeth - all very common for raw foodist.
    Any diet that REQUIRES supplementation should be suspect.
    --- this from a primarily, but not exclusively, raw vegan.

    • @pawssum
      @pawssum 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's ALL diets these days. We don't live in a lush wonderland full of wild fruit and free range game. Discolored teeth are normal for all diets, people who are raw vegan are just less likely to want to put a bunch of chemicals in their mouth to cover up that fact. If no one whitened their teeth, we'd all be yellowish teeth by 40.

    • @MyplayLists4Y2Y
      @MyplayLists4Y2Y 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      deathlightdb YOU SAID: "That's ALL diets these days.
      REPLY: No it isn't. The ailments commonly associated with raw veganism are NOT associated with a diverse whole-foods diet that includes some cooked foods and some animal products.
      YOU SAID: "We don't live in a lush wonderland full of wild fruit and free range game."
      REPLY: Vegans always use that argument, but it's an "appeal to ignorance logical fallacy" as there is no evidence to support such a claim nor can there ever be as the conditions of their premise can never be duplicated - if it were ever true at all!
      YOU SAID: "Discolored teeth are normal for all diets."
      REPLY: You are correct. I should have been more specific - actual dental health issues (cavities, browning, sensitivity, etc.). Just navigate raw food community threads and you will see many people talking about issues with dental health. Dental health problems are an issue for raw-foodist by their own admission.

    • @pawssum
      @pawssum 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not really interested in engaging with you any further, but I will give one final piece of advice. Go read some books about the differences between wild greens and fruit vs agriculturally grown ones, and on grain fed animal flesh vs free range. That wonderland comment is not a joke, and not just a piece of rhetoric. Don't throw words like "appeal to ignorance" around when you're debating about a subject you've clearly done zero research on; on which you are clearly and ironically, the ignorant one. Even organic food is nutritionally superior to the conventionally grown plants that most people are forced to consume, either via budget concerns, or availability. And even common sense would tell you it's true; wild primates who still have adequate ranges of natural territory can go out, eat whatever greens and fruit they feel like eating, and not just survive, but thrive. They don't have to reference charts or wonder whether they should be eating more greens or cauliflower. Given their biological similarities, this speaks VOLUMES to the superiority of wild food. And there are a lot of studies done on the nutritional qualities of food eaten by wild primates, how they eat them, choose them, everything. You should read those, too. Or just, you know, anything other than TH-cam comments and crappy internet pages. Your googled copy/paste of the phrase "appeal to ignorance logical fallacy" shows that you don't even know how to use the term correctly. It is a named phenomena in debate and discourse. Had you even had the competence to insult me correctly, you would have simply asserted (however incorrectly), that my argument was an appeal to ignorance, or something similar, instead of throwing the title of a Wikipedia entry at me.

    • @MyplayLists4Y2Y
      @MyplayLists4Y2Y 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      deathlightdb YOU SAID: "blah blah blah , no evidence, a couple ad hominem attacks, blah blah, a false equivalency, blah blah..."
      REPLY: That wasn't even a good try at supporting your argument. Wow, just pathetic. Not only did you absolutely use the appeal to ignorance logical fallacy when making your original argument, but now you are using a false equivalency logical fallacy to try to defend your failed argument. Then you throw in a couple ad hominem attacks and then the crème de la crème, your hilarious use of the ol' "where did you get that? Wikipedia?" grade school insult -- LOL!! oh my! I have a cramp from laughing so hard!!
      Next time try to actually support your failed argument with actual evidence. Oh what's that? you can't because that would require a time machine to bring you to the distant past for which you nor anyone else has actual evidence of?
      Yeah, just as I thought.

    When the Dalai Lama fled Tibet, He was a meat eater because that was the standard diet, not a lot of vegetables grown and farmed there- the climate, soil and environment is not conducive to that. When he went to India to live he became vegetarian like the majority of the people there. but his health suffered. His genetics etc. were shaped by untold generations of eating meat. The doctors told him to return to the original diet, and his vibrant health returned. There are many factors that contribute to health, and diet can't be one size fits all. I bounce between 50/50 raw up to 70% raw/ 30%not.

    People also forget about genetics. Black people typically had a varied diet and somewhat heavy in the meat department but also in the veggie department not so much in their fruits. And we typically look 10 to 20 years younger than we are. I am 40 years old and people constantly tell me I look like I'm my 18 year old daughter's sister. So I think it definitely has to do with that as well.

    John, you either look heathy or your don't. Honesty might help people to change the lack of Nutrition, even if they're eating raw. It's usually not the weight, it's in the dehydrated, gaunt, bulging eyes. Criticism isn't necessarily judgmental. I'm a Certified Nutritionist that works in the Fitness World. There are plenty of healthy meat eaters, who get plenty of exercise and sleep and love. Food cult mentalities is the real problem....not food.

      Dehydration on a raw food diet?! Possible of course but less likely than on a SAD diet! We eat sweet fruit filled with water and salads! We eat plenty of things that contain water and we don't eat carbonised cooked food that takes a lot more digestive energy and water to digest.

    • @lone6718

      Cynthia Millar agreed. Regardless of your chosen dietary avenue, moderation and variation is necessary. What scares me is when people live their day to day lives revolving around their diet.

  • @barleebread
    @barleebread 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lou's answer is spot on. There are plenty of non-raw foodists that look healthy because they have the right thoughts. Unhealthy thoughts make the body unhealthy no matter what your diet, even raw. Also many raw foodists may not be absorbing everything, may not be chewing all their food till they are liquid etc., may not be getting enough minerals, etc. Getting the full spectrum of nutrients is key, and chewing till your food is liquid every single time you take a bite is SO important to being successful on a raw food diet, because heat is not breaking down the food beforehand. Drinking LOOOOOOTS of water/liquids and going to bed early and getting a reasonable amount of exercise has also shown me to be very helpful.
    I love the work Karen does, and respect her so much for working with raising healthy children and teaching about healthy raw foods, but when people blame the healthy fats for making people fat that is only half of the story. I will eat up to a pound of freshly cracked macadamia nuts in a day, or 4 avocados in one sitting for weeks, or pour 1/4 cup of oil on my meals, and I am still pretty thin (5' 3" under 100lbs last I checked). The key is how you consume and combine those fats with things that allow them to be utilized (like greens and non sweet fruits like cucumber or lemon - don't combine with sweet things which raw foodists like to do like dates or honey or maple syrup... it's okay once in a while but not everyday and certainly when you are starting out it will keep weight on or even make you gain it) and not consuming rancid or cooked fats and oils thinking they are raw and fresh. Very very key.
    All in all though I think healthy thoughts make a person healthy, and you will naturally gravitate toward healthier eating habits. If someone goes to a raw food diet out of fear or dogma but does not change their thoughts, they may hit a wall with their progress... I've experienced it myself. Great video.

    Hi! I am going to try this raw thing again. I was vegetarian for 14 years and developed health issues. I've been doing a more paleo type of diet, but I am still feeling sick. I think I will do my weekdays as raw and then still eat some paleo stuff on the weekend so that I don't totally shock my system. How are you all getting enough protein? I cannot eat wheat, beans, or dairy, which I am assuming is off-limits to you raw vegan folks. Cheers!

      +Fruit Fun Fitness It's not a controversial diet, it's just that someone is claiming it's the "healthiest diet on the planet" so you need to walk the talk with that claim. That being said, in my opinion is that many/most rawists focus ONLY on food and not on the other parts of LIFE that are crucial for health, such as Sun/Light, Air, Water and constant contact with the Earth. Actually those things are far more important than food of any kind...
