The Thule Force XT series of rooftop cargo boxes a stylish and aerodynamic cargo box which holds skis, small luggage or other gear. Thule packs in top-of-the-line features and advanced engineering to make the Force XT cargo boxes easy to use, durable and secure.
The design improvements start with the unique angular, yet aerodynamic shape, it is constructed with durable, lightweight thermoformed ABS plastic. This is an automotive grade plastic, a material commonly used for the manufacture of automobile exterior components such as rearview mirrors, with a matte black finish. Care for the finish as you would the vehicle using soft sponges, microfibers, and sudsy water, but no automatic carwashes.
The front of the box is smooth with no belt line found on other boxes, this reduces frontal area turbulence. The angular high and low areas of the lid are modern in design but also act to stiffen the lid with little to no added weight, this compared to other designs which use extra internal bracing for stiffness adding a material weight penalty.
The Force XT series boxes are strong with a 165-pound carrying capacity, most other boxes are rated to 110 pounds. This is 55-pounds extra weight capacity, that's 33% greater than what most other boxes are rated to carry. The added strength can be attributed in large part to the steel reinforcements in the base which encompasses the mounting hardware, an area where high stresses occur.
The lid to base overlap at the front of the box is greater than any other box, eliminating the possibility of "fish mouthing", this is an aerodynamic occurrence when air forces separation between the lid and base. No other manufacturer has engineered such a targeted solution to this phenomenon as effectively and elegantly.
The LockKnob encompasses the lock cylinder housing, offering protection to the Thule Comfort Key and adding comfort when locking and unlocking your cargo box.
The crossbar mounting hardware has extra wide crossbar attachments to accommodate a wide range of crossbar shapes and sizes. The smooth turning, rubberized knob tightens the hardware and clicks when fully tight. This click function ensures that the hardware is not over, or under tightened to the crossbar.
The dual-sided opening lid allows for easy opening and closing from either the passenger or driver side of the vehicle.
The Force XT boxes have been thoughtfully designed to provide the best possible clearance for the vehicle's rear hatch, spoiler, and antenna. The four primary sizes; Sport, L, XL, and XXL match up well to proportionate vehicle sizes, here are examples:
L fits the Subaru Outback Wagon, the Toyota Rav 4, the Honda CRV, the Ford Edge, the Audi Q5 and Nissan Rogue.
XL fits the Honda Pilot, the Toyota Highlander, Land Rover Discovery Sport, the Infiniti QX60 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
XXL fits the Lexus LX, the Toyota Sequoia, the Chevrolet Suburban, the Ford Expedition, the Infiniti QX80, the Nissan Armada,
Sport is just 25 inches wide for those wanting to use remaining bar area for other gear.

I just used my Thule Force XT XL on my Subaru Ascent for the first time. Couldn’t even tell that it was on the roof during our 2,000 mile road trip. I travelled with two kids and three dogs, so being able to have our gear on the roof was such an incredible space saver! I only wish I had purchased it earlier.

According to the Thule Fit Guide, the 4Runner requires a Thule roof rack crossbar set to support the cargo box. We recommend the Thule Motion Large 16 CF for the 4Runner: amzn.to/2nV3jy6

Hi! Thanks for this awesome video. I am looking to purchase one for my 2016 Subaru Outback. I need an XL because my husband's skis are 180cm. The vehicle in the video looks similar to an Outback, you say in the video the XL is good for wagons, and Thule's site says its compatible, but in the video info you say L fits the Outback, which would be too small for my needs. How is the XL fit for an Outback? Just worried about the factory rack placement and the hatch clearance. Thank you!

Is there a difference between a Force and Force XT?
The Force XT is all new, with improved aerodynamics, stronger construction with an increased weight capacity from 110 to 165 pounds, plus new upgraded mounting hardware. There will be lots of positive reviews for the Force and few for the Force XT but that's only because The XT has only been on the market for a couple months.
If a high quaöity ventilation valve was installed could you sleep in it with comforts. Do then make a large one
Would the Thule Force XT Sport slightly over the black bit if a wingbar ok? Same rack as in the video. I measured my Kia Sportage's Thule wingbar rack with one Thule Bike carrier and think it'll be 25mm off the wingbar metal onto the black plastic. Thanks know it's a pretty specific question :)
Best to keep the box over the bar, not onto the EDGE foot due to the height difference.

How do compare this to yakima new nx series?
Hello. These two boxes are at similar price points and have many common features. The biggest differences would be the mounting hardware, Yakima has a removable handle to tighten the hardware to the crossbars while Thule has four turn knobs that stay in place and take up more space. Yakima has more adjustment range on the roof rack to maximize hatch clearance. Thanks!

Hello. There's no stated range for this. The manual will focus on the support of the crossbars and the minimum distance of 24 inches apart. Generally, the less overhang the better, but having the box centered over the load bars is the most important aspect of positioning. Thanks!
