It's really interesting seeing how hard it is to explain some of these ideas across the language barriers. "Dork" was immediately seen as bad, when it doesn't really have that connotation for English. And when she said "Like a dad," we know that she meant socks-and-sandles and corny jokes, but the first thing A-chan went to is "Oh you're saying you're reliable, like the other members rely on you." Is there an equivalent of the "dorky dad" in Japanese culture?
Hard to say. Until fairly recently, Japanese fathers weren't really present for their children, since they worked 12+ hours a day, PLUS mandatory social time with their coworkers so they weren't seen as "weird" or a "loner".
