It is impossible for anyone in the 21st Century to watch “Goldfinger” and truly appreciate what a cinematic masterpiece it was at the time. Younger fans lack perspective, and fail to appreciate how truly innovative the early Bonds were. The early movies were the blueprint not only for all the Bond movies that followed, but for the entire action-adventure movie genre, and “Goldfinger” was the series standard-bearer. Despite moving at a furious pace, it manages (unlike so many other action movies) to maintain a coherent and logical plot. The rapid-cuts and fast pace of action movies today all started with the early Bond movies. But now all the Bond elements that were unique at the time - megalomaniac villains, outrageous plots, lethal gadgets, sophisticated humor, women to die for, a car to literally die for,- have been imitated to death, so when younger audiences see the early Sean Connery movies they don’t understand that at the time, this was all new. In 1964 most people had never heard of lasers or karate or skin suffocation or plastic explosives. No movie had ever featured a tricked-out car like the Aston, a finale with a setting like Fort Knox, a hero that made jokes after killing someone, a character with a name like Pussy Galore, a henchman like Oddjob, a megalomaniac like Goldfinger, or all the unique ways of killing people: electrocuting a villain in a bathtub, painting a woman gold, a lethal “throwing hat”, nerve gas, sucking a villain out a depressurized plane window ... Nor had audiences ever seen anyone as cool as Connery’s Bond. (No one before, especially not the hero, ever killed someone and made a witty joke afterwards.) All new to cinematic audiences at the time; all passé now. Unlike so many of the movies that followed, “Goldfinger” is the perfect blend of the real and the fantastic. It isn’t dark and brooding and un-fun like the Daniel Craig movies, or ridiculous semi-comedies like some of the Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan films. “Goldfinger” is finely balanced, managing to retain a realistic feel despite the implausible plot. It delivers laughs without ever descending into comedy, and despite the light mood of much of the movie, the plot seems serious, the villains are genuinely menacing, and the viewer feels Bond is in real danger. This is not an easy balance for any movie to achieve, and “Goldfinger” does so perfectly.
Fantastic episode! “Goldfinger” was and always will be, one of my favorite movies! Along with all the gadgets introduced, it also solidified the Walther PP as “the James Bond gun”. The sound track for this movie is an absolute killer! The combination of brass and the timphony solos really drive the anticipation of the movie. As a 12 year old boy in 1964, I was surprised that my parents let me go with my friends to see the movie. I found the sound track album at a local music store. I had $2.50 and the cost was $4.99. I can remember asking my dad “to borrow” the rest to get the album. He said he thought that sounded like a good deal and gave me a $5.00 bill. Later, he wanted to see the album cover and I think he was surprised to see a gold painted girl in a two piece bathing suit. He said, “ That looks interesting.” Thanks, Dad. I don’t think that I paid back the $5. To me, Sean Connery will always e the best James Bond. Don’t call him British, though. He’s Scottish!

Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page was a studio musician for years before that. He played guitar for the GOLDFINGER THEME page says that Shirley bassey sung the theme in one take with so much ferocity that when she was done. She literally collapsed on the ground in front of the whole orchestra.

He did such a great job, you'd never know he couldn't speak English. I always debate which movie I like better, Goldfinger or From Russia With Love. From Russia With Love tends to win more often, but they are both great films!
Having rewatched Goldfinger recently, I've come to the stunning conclusion that it is the blueprint of more modern day popcorn action flick, especially those from the 1980s and 1990s.
In the 60s when I was a kid, a company came out with a James Bond 007 1/32nd slot car racing set, that had the Aston Martin with all the cool gadgets and a fun track with all sorts of traps, oil slick, ect. But the absolute coolest thing that happened in my life? For that year's Christmas, our local Goldblatts store not only was having a special sale on that 007 slot car set? But to promote it, they had the REAL James Bond 007 Aston Martin parked outside the store on display ❤❤❤‼️‼️ And best of all, we were allowed to sit inside the car, WOW😱🤯‼️ All the gadgets were working, and inside the car we could see that hidden tracking map on the dash. Good thing I saw it as a kid. Cause if it was me, today, older? I'd definitely have tried to drive it away 🤫😉😉😂🤣😂‼️👍
Wow! That's amazing that you got to sit in the James Bond car. This summer, I was in Washington DC and they had a James Bond exhibit and of course the Aston Martin DB4. We couldn't sit in it, but I took tons of photos. 😄
I was approaching 11 years old when I first saw Goldfinger in the theater, thus beginning an absolute spy movie and TV obsession that lasted many years. Goldfinger was such a huge hit that while EON was producing Thunderball, United Artists re-released Dr. No and From Russia With Love as a double feature. Well done video. 👍

I first saw Goldfinger as an adult, many years after its release, but I had known him since childhood. My parents saw it when I was eight, and the next day my Mom was so full of that experience, that she narrated it to us six and eight year olds in detail. And we were fascinated. We played Bond and Pussy, we drew them, we shot at the cars that drove behind us. Even indirectly, we discovered a new world.
69 yrs young Grandpa. Goldfinger....my fav of all. In military police I worked undercover drug team for three yrs, various military location s. I used "Bond"style of quick witted, and mellow composure. Many of my generation felt like Bond. I still do. "Q"developed, medical scooter. for me. Seriously, I miss those times.
I was stationed at Ft. Knox back in the 1980's. I recgonize the barracks in the movie as being in the 4th Bn., my old Battalian area. The town where Goldfingers henchmen wait for the Flying Circus to gas the troops is called Mouldrough, Ky., it is a small town (unincorporated) between Radcliffe, Ky. (the post town of Ft. Knox) and Louisville, Ky. on Hwy 31W. The scene where Bond and Pussy have parachuited from the jet and carry on under the canopy of the parachuite is a famous arbortium outside of Louisville... I have been to the site myself. I used to travel down Gold Vault Road every day from my quarters to work at the troop medical clinic where I worked.
My friends across the street dad made us watch Goldfinger. I love the golfing scene cause I love golf. I grew up Roger Moore. (ie. Spy Who Loved Me) Bond fan. I thought Spectre and Quantom were bad. I love Casino Royale.
I'm in a similar situation to you. Roger Moore was my Bond and I loved all his movies and saw them in opening weekend. But all the older adults kept saying, "Sean Connery was better" so in high school, my best friend and I rented Goldfinger on VHS and it was awesome! We ended up renting all the Connery Bond films. As for Casino Royale, I saw it on opening night in 2006 and it was an out of body experience. It's still my favorite Bond film.
Gert Fröbe and Sean Connery both had bit parts in the movie "The Longest Day," which came out in 1962 a week before the first Bond film, "Dr. No." I wrote about this in my comment on "From Russia With Love:" My dad and Ian Fleming were WWII veterans. My dad participated in the 1942 raid at Dieppe, France that was planned, in part, by Fleming, who was an officer in British Naval Intelligence. Fleming was off-shore watching the raid, my dad was on the beach in the raid, and was captured by the Germans, spending the rest of the war in various German stalags. Like Fleming, my dad was born in England. Like Fleming, my dad was severely alcoholic. Like Fleming, my dad at age 56. Alcoholism (and tobacco) played key roles in the demise of their health. There is a pic of Fleming shortly before his death, it strikes me how much he looked like my father shortly before my father died.
Good to know that I can paint all my skin and still survive. As a younger person watching the film, Odd-Job was an incredibly-spooky and fearful villain....the best Bond Movie.
A lot of the scenes that were supposed to be in Kentucky, were filmed in Miami. Living there at the time I recognized many of the locations. Since they had the crew there to film the scenes at the Fontainebleau hotel, on Miami beach, in the beginning of the movie, they must have decided to film whatever else they could in the area.
Goldfinger has always been my most favorite Bond movie ever! And I seen every Bond movie starting as a kid watching Doctor No in the theaters. Thunderball is my #2 best favorite Bond movie. And when will you be making a video on that next? 🙏🙏🙏

Made the year I was born, I've loved this movie since I was a young child. Today in 2025, I can honestly say that Goldfinger is my favorite movie of all time. I've bought it, along with the other first four Bond movies with Sean Connery, and have watched it at least 30 times. It has always been my late night go-to movie along with Colm Feore's masterful demonic acting in Stephen King's "Storm of the Century." 👍👍
I remember seeing it at the theater but years after it was first released. And it would be years after that before they finally broadcast it on TV. There is no better way of seeing it than on the big screen in a crowed theater, picking up your popcorn and drink then finding a seat. Even after the movie was over you felt so cool leaving the theater as maybe a little bit of Bond rubbed off on you.
This movie was before my time, so it is amazing that you got to see it in the theaters. My first movie was Moonraker. I remember renting this on VHS and absolutely falling in love with it.

Actor/Director/Singer/ Composer Anthony Newley and his writing partner Leslie Bricusse wrote The Theme song forGoldfinger. I’ve heard Newleys demo , with Anthony singing but all three are credited as writers. My guess would be as incredible as it sounds Newley couldn’t read or write music( notation) then Barry obviously did all the orchestrations / arrangements. When Michael Caine returned from South Africa his flat had been rented in London so John Barry told Michael he could stay with John Barry Michael walk one morning to hear Barry playing a tune on the piano in Barry’s house when Michael asked Barry what the song was he replied Goldfinger Michael Caine and Barry had become friends while Cain was making Zulu in South Africa Barry did the music for Zulu. Nadja Regin who played Kerim Beys secretary in from Russia with love plays the woman in the teaser who bond seas the baddie in her eyes. Harold Sakata I believe won a Gold Medal at the 1948 Olympics in London in Weightlifting for / apologies I left my comment before finishing the video. Silver/ not gold. The actress who played Denk also played the voluptuous woman who gives Red Grant a massage in From Russia With Love.My Goldfinger soundtrack album credits all three John Barry ,Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.

I don't find it at all odd that Anthony Newley couldn't read or write notation. Irving Berlin couldn't. None of The Beatles could. I have strong doubts that either Hoagy Carmichael or Johnny Mercer could, Carmichael considerably less so than Mercer. Do you know who the most successful songwriter in history is? "Unknown." Unknown wrote hundreds if not thousands altogether of the British Isles Folk Songs ( The Child Ballads, named after the British musicologist, Sir Francis Child ), hundreds of which came to the thirteen colonies before the American Revolution. You can hear the sounds of these songs in some of The Beatles' work, and certainly in American roots music. Oh: I actually wonder whether Richard Wagner could read and write notation. The reason for this is that at fourteen, with no musical background, he took it into his head that he wanted to be a great opera composer. William Byrd was something like the father of British music. He was the greatest composer in Elizabethan England. Listen to his "Hughe Ashton's Ground," and ask of yourself if you don't hear auguries of especially McCartney's ballads.
@ Neither can Peter Dennis Townshend. What surprised me was how many musicals Anthony Newley wrote”Stop The World I Want To Get Off” Roar Of The Greasepaint” Scrooge”. Anthony would have a melody in his head and hum it to a friend( not Bricusse) and this mate would do the notation. Having strong doubts is different than knowing for certain!! Composer/Arranger Henry Mancini could obviously read and write music so Mercer didn’t have to when he wrote the lyrics for Mancinis compositions for “Moon River”,The Days of Wine and Roses “,Charade”The songs for “Darling Lili” and several others. I’m well aware that Paul McCartney can’t read or write music. The term “ notation” I borrowed or if you like pinched from an interview with none other than Paul McCartney himself!!! Paul tried for about 1 week to learn and said “ sod this”. As for Hoagy Carmichael that is incredibly interesting. I’ll try and find out!!
I have no problem with Goldfinger, its casting and even the merchandise (we owned two DB5s- one 60s original and a 70s rerelease). Gerd Frobe was perfect as Goldfinger, and I can't imagine Oddjob being different either. You even have Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore, as well as the Masterson sisters- what's not to love?
The first 2 Bond movies did okay. But, Goldfinger was a smash success. In high school when it debuted, it became a teen hit. One rich kid who drove a Corvette memorized the movie by seeing it 32 times. He could recite all the dialogue. Once, he drove into a gas station where I was talking with a mechanic friend. The Corvette was billowing steam from an empty radiator and very overheated engine. He immediately began pouring water over the engine to cool it. I and the mechanic didn't say a word and just quietly watched.
Fleming named his villain after Erno Goldfinger, a Hungarian architect who had settled in Britain. Fleming objected to a Goldfinger development in Hampstead. Goldfinger was well known for his humourless manner. When Goldfinger threatened legal action over his name being used in the book, Fleming said he was going to rename his villain Goldprick. Fleming's publisher had to sort the matter out. One of Goldfinger's best known buildings is Trellick Tower, a residential block in West London.
While there is no such thing "skin-suffocation" , people have been poisoned by paints/painting themselves or being covered with paint containing arsenic, cyanide, copper and other chemicals or oil based paints. They(Fleming/ and the screen-writer) could have used something along that line instead*. Of course, IMO, the line is the way it is as Bond was very familiar with cabaret dancers. IIRC- from an SNL skit(might have been a different show) , After a medical check-up the doctor tells James Bond "You have every venereal disease in the book and a few we have never seen before!" *Buddy Espen(The Tin Man) nearly died from the original aluminum powder paint in The Wizard of Oz.
I agree with Connery that From Russia With Love was the most realistic about spy-craft. The plots in most Bond films are too unbelievable. This video made me respect Goldfinger more (even if most folks already call it the best ever). The plot seemed far-fetched to me until I saw that the original story was a gold heist (even if that was improbable) rather than the irradiated gold plot in the flic. Good Job, even if it's Odd (ha ha).
That was the best Bond movie ever. I've seen that movie hundreds of times. Know every line. " Who are you?" " My name is Pussy Galore." " I must be dreaming." That's one of the best lines of that movie.
American title designer, Maurice Binder, had a marvellous appreciation of the (mostly naked) female form in the many Bond film title sequences he made.
In an old Top Gear, they tried to re-create the spinning wheel axle. It didn't work out very well and was funny when the axle got stuck in the target car.
It is great, but I think I love From Russia With Love just a little more. As others have noted, the "gadgets" were actually in existence in 1962. It makes Bond more heroic somehow. The stateroom fight between Bond and the Robert Shaw character is thrilling. And Lotte Lenya is a delight.
I love both movies. I have a difficult time chosing which one I loke better. From Russia With Love wins most of the time, as well. But it's close! Thank you for your comment.
Another great video. You only forgot the bulletproof plate that came up behind the rear window. At the time I was disappointed the machine guns that popped out of the headlights had been used to greater effect. Shooting at his car's reflection didn't accomplish anything.

The idea of someone dying after their body was totally painted was used in the 1940s film Bedlam starring Boris Karlof, I think a youth in the Vauxhall Gardens was totally covered in gold paint for the entertainment of the aristocracy, he recited some lines then died, because of the paint.

The character of Auric Goldfinger is based on the South African gold magnate Charlie Engelhard, remembered today for his extravagant Thoroughbred racehorse purchases such as three sons of the stallion RIBOT (RIBOCCO, RIBERO and RIBBOCARE) and above all for NIJINSKY, the first Triple Crown winner since 1935. Engelhard was a big man who looked like Gerd Froeb and reputedly drank 60 cans of Coca-Cola every day. My cousin, Gordon Lonsdale, was Engelhard's junior partner in the South African gold bullion business, and believed he was going to inherit, but Engelhard married and had an heir.
When I was on the army shooting team 1984 - 89 there was a picture of past shooters odd job was a staff sergeant on United States army shooting team he was transferred out about 5 years before I got stationed at fort Benning the old timers told me it was because of his weight that the army put him out that's the army mentality for you
I'm a bit of a plot nerd. I justified (to myself) the different actors playing Felix Lighter by appreciating that the CIA had names of people that were borrowed by lots of different people. In the real world, for example, while Lee Harvey Oswald was living in Russia, J Edgar Hoover notes that there was someone in the USA using that name. So, it's not a plot spoiler.

Goldfinger may not be my favorite Bond film but I would consider it the most quintessential Bond film. The skin suffocation part i find odd though, like would according to the films view, wouldnt scuba (like in Thunderball) diving be just as dangerous because you skin cant breathe water, or wearing a wet suit? Thats what i was always curious about after hearing that.
Uhhh… Not true. Dwayne Johnson’s grandfather, albeit not by blood, was another professional wrestler, Peter Maivia, who acted and was the stunt fight coordinator in another Bond film, You Only Live Twice.
I love James Bond movies, BUT... I thought this one was long and drawn out. I was actually boring in many of the middle parts. My favorite is: You Only Live Twice.

Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page was a studio musician for years before that. He played guitar for the GOLDFINGER THEME page says that Shirley bassey sung the theme in one take with so much ferocity that when she was done. She literally collapsed on the ground in front of the whole orchestra.

He did such a great job, you'd never know he couldn't speak English. I always debate which movie I like better, Goldfinger or From Russia With Love. From Russia With Love tends to win more often, but they are both great films!

Having rewatched Goldfinger recently, I've come to the stunning conclusion that it is the blueprint of more modern day popcorn action flick, especially those from the 1980s and 1990s.
Yes! It's such an amazing movie that influenced a generation of movies and still influences movies today!
In the 60s when I was a kid, a company came out with a James Bond 007 1/32nd slot car racing set, that had the Aston Martin with all the cool gadgets and a fun track with all sorts of traps, oil slick, ect. But the absolute coolest thing that happened in my life? For that year's Christmas, our local Goldblatts store not only was having a special sale on that 007 slot car set? But to promote it, they had the REAL James Bond 007 Aston Martin parked outside the store on display ❤❤❤‼️‼️ And best of all, we were allowed to sit inside the car, WOW😱🤯‼️ All the gadgets were working, and inside the car we could see that hidden tracking map on the dash. Good thing I saw it as a kid. Cause if it was me, today, older? I'd definitely have tried to drive it away 🤫😉😉😂🤣😂‼️👍
Wow! That's amazing that you got to sit in the James Bond car. This summer, I was in Washington DC and they had a James Bond exhibit and of course the Aston Martin DB4. We couldn't sit in it, but I took tons of photos. 😄

I was approaching 11 years old when I first saw Goldfinger in the theater, thus beginning an absolute spy movie and TV obsession that lasted many years. Goldfinger was such a huge hit that while EON was producing Thunderball, United Artists re-released Dr. No and From Russia With Love as a double feature. Well done video. 👍

I first saw Goldfinger as an adult, many years after its release, but I had known him since childhood. My parents saw it when I was eight, and the next day my Mom was so full of that experience, that she narrated it to us six and eight year olds in detail. And we were fascinated. We played Bond and Pussy, we drew them, we shot at the cars that drove behind us. Even indirectly, we discovered a new world.

69 yrs young Grandpa. Goldfinger....my fav of all. In military police I worked undercover drug team for three yrs, various military location s. I used "Bond"style of quick witted, and mellow composure. Many of my generation felt like Bond. I still do. "Q"developed, medical scooter. for me. Seriously, I miss those times.

I was stationed at Ft. Knox back in the 1980's. I recgonize the barracks in the movie as being in the 4th Bn., my old Battalian area. The town where Goldfingers henchmen wait for the Flying Circus to gas the troops is called Mouldrough, Ky., it is a small town (unincorporated) between Radcliffe, Ky. (the post town of Ft. Knox) and Louisville, Ky. on Hwy 31W. The scene where Bond and Pussy have parachuited from the jet and carry on under the canopy of the parachuite is a famous arbortium outside of Louisville...

My friends across the street dad made us watch Goldfinger. I love the golfing scene cause I love golf. I grew up Roger Moore. (ie. Spy Who Loved Me) Bond fan. I thought Spectre and Quantom were bad. I love Casino Royale.
I'm in a similar situation to you. Roger Moore was my Bond and I loved all his movies and saw them in opening weekend. But all the older adults kept saying, "Sean Connery was better" so in high school, my best friend and I rented Goldfinger on VHS and it was awesome! We ended up renting all the Connery Bond films. As for Casino Royale, I saw it on opening night in 2006 and it was an out of body experience. It's still my favorite Bond film.

Gert Fröbe and Sean Connery both had bit parts in the movie "The Longest Day," which came out in 1962 a week before the first Bond film, "Dr. No." I wrote about this in my comment on "From Russia With Love:" My dad and Ian Fleming were WWII veterans. My dad participated in the 1942 raid at Dieppe, France that was planned, in part, by Fleming, who was an officer in British Naval Intelligence. Fleming was off-shore watching the raid, my dad was on the beach in the raid, and was captured by the Germans, spending the rest of the war in various German stalags. Like Fleming, my dad was born in England. Like Fleming, my dad was severely alcoholic. Like Fleming, my dad at age 56. Alcoholism (and tobacco) played key roles in the demise of their health. There is a pic of Fleming shortly before his death, it strikes me how much he looked like my father shortly before my father died.

A lot of the scenes that were supposed to be in Kentucky, were filmed in Miami. Living there at the time I recognized many of the locations. Since they had the crew there to film the scenes at the Fontainebleau hotel, on Miami beach, in the beginning of the movie, they must have decided to film whatever else they could in the area.

Made the year I was born, I've loved this movie since I was a young child. Today in 2025, I can honestly say that Goldfinger is my favorite movie of all time. I've bought it, along with the other first four Bond movies with Sean Connery, and have watched it at least 30 times. It has always been my late night go-to movie along with Colm Feore's masterful demonic acting in Stephen King's "Storm of the Century." 👍👍
It is such an awesome movie!
I remember seeing it at the theater but years after it was first released. And it would be years after that before they finally broadcast it on TV. There is no better way of seeing it than on the big screen in a crowed theater, picking up your popcorn and drink then finding a seat. Even after the movie was over you felt so cool leaving the theater as maybe a little bit of Bond rubbed off on you.
This movie was before my time, so it is amazing that you got to see it in the theaters. My first movie was Moonraker. I remember renting this on VHS and absolutely falling in love with it.

Actor/Director/Singer/ Composer Anthony Newley and his writing partner Leslie Bricusse wrote The Theme song forGoldfinger. I’ve heard Newleys demo , with Anthony singing but all three are credited as writers. My guess would be as incredible as it sounds Newley couldn’t read or write music( notation) then Barry obviously did all the orchestrations / arrangements. When Michael Caine returned from South Africa his flat had been rented in London so John Barry told Michael he could stay with John Barry Michael walk one morning to hear Barry playing a tune on the piano in Barry’s house when Michael asked Barry what the song was he replied Goldfinger Michael Caine and Barry had become friends while Cain was making Zulu in South Africa Barry did the music for Zulu. Nadja Regin who played Kerim Beys secretary in from Russia with love plays the woman in the teaser who bond seas the baddie in her eyes. Harold Sakata I believe won a Gold Medal at the 1948 Olympics in London in Weightlifting for / apologies I left my comment before finishing the video. Silver/ not gold. The actress who played Denk also played the voluptuous woman who gives Red Grant a massage in From Russia With Love.My Goldfinger soundtrack album credits all three John Barry ,Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.

I don't find it at all odd that Anthony Newley couldn't read or write notation. Irving Berlin couldn't. None of The Beatles could. I have strong doubts that either Hoagy Carmichael or Johnny Mercer could, Carmichael considerably less so than Mercer. Do you know who the most successful songwriter in history is? "Unknown." Unknown wrote hundreds if not thousands altogether of the British Isles Folk Songs ( The Child Ballads, named after the British musicologist, Sir Francis Child ), hundreds of which came to the thirteen colonies before the American Revolution. You can hear the sounds of these songs in some of The Beatles' work, and certainly in American roots music.
Oh: I actually wonder whether Richard Wagner could read and write notation. The reason for this is that at fourteen, with no musical background, he took it into his head that he wanted to be a great opera composer.
William Byrd was something like the father of British music. He was the greatest composer in Elizabethan England. Listen to his "Hughe Ashton's Ground," and ask of yourself if you don't hear auguries of especially McCartney's ballads.
@ Neither can Peter Dennis Townshend. What surprised me was how many musicals Anthony Newley wrote”Stop The World I Want To Get Off” Roar Of The Greasepaint” Scrooge”. Anthony would have a melody in his head and hum it to a friend( not Bricusse) and this mate would do the notation. Having strong doubts is different than knowing for certain!! Composer/Arranger Henry Mancini could obviously read and write music so Mercer didn’t have to when he wrote the lyrics for Mancinis compositions for “Moon River”,The Days of Wine and Roses “,Charade”The songs for “Darling Lili” and several others. I’m well aware that Paul McCartney can’t read or write music. The term “ notation” I borrowed or if you like pinched from an interview with none other than Paul McCartney himself!!! Paul tried for about 1 week to learn and said “ sod this”. As for Hoagy Carmichael that is incredibly interesting. I’ll try and find out!!

I have no problem with Goldfinger, its casting and even the merchandise (we owned two DB5s- one 60s original and a 70s rerelease). Gerd Frobe was perfect as Goldfinger, and I can't imagine Oddjob being different either. You even have Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore, as well as the Masterson sisters- what's not to love?

It is great! Connery was finer than in this movie.
The first 2 Bond movies did okay. But, Goldfinger was a smash success. In high school when it debuted, it became a teen hit. One rich kid who drove a Corvette memorized the movie by seeing it 32 times. He could recite all the dialogue. Once, he drove into a gas station where I was talking with a mechanic friend. The Corvette was billowing steam from an empty radiator and very overheated engine. He immediately began pouring water over the engine to cool it. I and the mechanic didn't say a word and just quietly watched.
That's a great story.
Fleming named his villain after Erno Goldfinger, a Hungarian architect who had settled in Britain. Fleming objected to a Goldfinger development in Hampstead. Goldfinger was well known for his humourless manner. When Goldfinger threatened legal action over his name being used in the book, Fleming said he was going to rename his villain Goldprick. Fleming's publisher had to sort the matter out. One of Goldfinger's best known buildings is Trellick Tower, a residential block in West London.

While there is no such thing "skin-suffocation" , people have been poisoned by paints/painting themselves or being covered with paint containing arsenic, cyanide, copper and other chemicals or oil based paints. They(Fleming/ and the screen-writer) could have used something along that line instead*. Of course, IMO, the line is the way it is as Bond was very familiar with cabaret dancers. IIRC- from an SNL skit(might have been a different show) , After a medical check-up the doctor tells James Bond "You have every venereal disease in the book and a few we have never seen before!"
*Buddy Espen(The Tin Man) nearly died from the original aluminum powder paint in The Wizard of Oz.

I agree with Connery that From Russia With Love was the most realistic about spy-craft. The plots in most Bond films are too unbelievable. This video made me respect Goldfinger more (even if most folks already call it the best ever). The plot seemed far-fetched to me until I saw that the original story was a gold heist (even if that was improbable) rather than the irradiated gold plot in the flic. Good Job, even if it's Odd (ha ha).

American title designer, Maurice Binder, had a marvellous appreciation of the (mostly naked) female form in the many Bond film title sequences he made.
In an old Top Gear, they tried to re-create the spinning wheel axle. It didn't work out very well and was funny when the axle got stuck in the target car.

It is great, but I think I love From Russia With Love just a little more. As others have noted, the "gadgets" were actually in existence in 1962. It makes Bond more heroic somehow. The stateroom fight between Bond and the Robert Shaw character is thrilling. And Lotte Lenya is a delight.
I love both movies. I have a difficult time chosing which one I loke better. From Russia With Love wins most of the time, as well. But it's close! Thank you for your comment.
Another great video. You only forgot the bulletproof plate that came up behind the rear window. At the time I was disappointed the machine guns that popped out of the headlights had been used to greater effect. Shooting at his car's reflection didn't accomplish anything.

The idea of someone dying after their body was totally painted was used in the 1940s film Bedlam starring Boris Karlof, I think a youth in the Vauxhall Gardens was totally covered in gold paint for the entertainment of the aristocracy, he recited some lines then died, because of the paint.

Engelhard was a big man who looked like Gerd Froeb and reputedly drank 60 cans of Coca-Cola every day. My cousin, Gordon Lonsdale, was Engelhard's junior partner in the South African gold bullion business, and believed he was going to inherit, but Engelhard married and had an heir.

When I was on the army shooting team 1984 - 89 there was a picture of past shooters odd job was a staff sergeant on United States army shooting team he was transferred out about 5 years before I got stationed at fort Benning the old timers told me it was because of his weight that the army put him out that's the army mentality for you

I'm a bit of a plot nerd. I justified (to myself) the different actors playing Felix Lighter by appreciating that the CIA had names of people that were borrowed by lots of different people. In the real world, for example, while Lee Harvey Oswald was living in Russia, J Edgar Hoover notes that there was someone in the USA using that name. So, it's not a plot spoiler.

Goldfinger may not be my favorite Bond film but I would consider it the most quintessential Bond film. The skin suffocation part i find odd though, like would according to the films view, wouldnt scuba (like in Thunderball) diving be just as dangerous because you skin cant breathe water, or wearing a wet suit? Thats what i was always curious about after hearing that.

I love James Bond movies, BUT... I thought this one was long and drawn out. I was actually boring in many of the middle parts.

The car was actually a DB4 prototype for the DB5. I found this out only 12 years ago! It's NOT a DB5....spread the word.
