Hi Everyone and Welcome to Totally Awesome Films Channel.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan follows Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise as they face off against the vengeful Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically enhanced tyrant from Kirk's past. Khan, seeking revenge for his exile, steals a powerful device called the Genesis Device, which can create life but also has the potential for catastrophic destruction. As Kirk and his crew race to stop him, they engage in a tense battle that culminates in a heartbreaking sacrifice. The film explores themes of aging, sacrifice, and the consequences of past actions, with a focus on the bond between Kirk and his crew, particularly his friendship with Mr. Spock.

I had a massive lump in my throat when Spock died. This film is still my favorite of all Star Trek movies.
I'm a huge Star Trek fan, I have been since I was a child, in Star Trek 2 the wrath of Khan is my absolute favorite of the series, may it live long and prosper.
Live Long and Prosper! 🖖
pretty stupid having your secret protagonist in the movie title. Harve Bennett idea better.
I had a huge fight with my Mom. I had started an episode ("The Tholian Web"), and I became engrossed. Trek came on at 8:30 in those days, for some reason.
My school night bedtime was 9:00.
Well, we fought, we argued, I pleaded, she was having none of it. My pals spilled the ending for me the next day, damn 'em.
I miss my Mom, but damn, it's just a half hour more, jeeeeez....
''
That final fun fact that Wrath of Khan was the literal beginning of consumer VHS sales is so cool!
Thanks. It's very interesting.
Thank you for making this. I’ve seen so many behind the scenes of Star Trek two things you didn’t know about Star Trek two etc. etc. yours is the best so far!
My pleasure! I am so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for your kind words!
Star Trek II had the best death scene I have ever seen in a movie. Nimoy and Shatner did an excellent job filming this....they portrayed a real emotional moment. Well done gentlemen.
Yes! Such an amazing death scene.
Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner. Two amazing composers and two different great musical scores. Star Trek is lucky to have both.
Yes. Two of the greatest.
Excellent episode about one of my all time favorite movies.
I remember watching the movie in a theater and thinking, “I’ve seen this story before!”
The movie that I had in mind happened to be on a late night time slot on local TV. When I watched it, I thought, “ This is it!”
The 1957 movie starring Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens, “The Enemy Below” had almost the same cat and mouse story line between a U.S. destroyer escort and a German U-Boat.
Deciding to make space the ocean and the two starships, the destroyer and U-Boat was brilliant! So easy to believe.
Wow! That's very interesting. I need to check out The Enemy Below?
@ yes, excellent movie with a real U.S. destroyer escort (the Enterprise).
James Horner’s score is a masterpiece
Yes it is! He was a genius!
This is my favorite Star Trek film…. I absolutely love it. I saw it upon its initial release and as a kid- the ear bugs blew my mind.
Me too! I was 13 years old when I saw this, and became a lifelong Trek fan!
I don't know how many times I have watched this movie I always tear up at the end, and just as you get your composure back you hear Spock's voice and the tears just start all over again
That is so true! Such a great movie.
I just finished watching this that you really made this updated video exponentially better than the first one. This was great. But the new one you just done is the best ever.
Thank you so much! Always good to hear from you!
I just remember back in 1982 even people who never watched Star Trek were caught up in the whole hoopla about Spock dying. It was genius marketing.
Me too. Back in 1982, it got so many people interested in Star Trek
You're always doing more of that make your videos better. Thank you
Thank you! The first Star Trek The Motion Picture was the first video I ever made. The first Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan is the second video I ever made. I wanted to update it with all the techniques I've learned since then.
Your movie docs are informative and entertaining. Wrath of Khan is the best Star Trek show of all.
Thank you! And I agree about Wrath of Khan.
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast You're welcome
It’s a motion picture, a movie if you will, NOT a ‘show’.
Another great episode! Fine job.
Thank you so much!
Another excellent video)) WoK is the best Star Trek movie. Montalban was the real star. I watched TOS as it was first aired. An interesting note. Madlyn Rhue who played Khan's girlfriend, Lt. McGivers in the original Space Seed episode, was slated to reprise her role. Sadly, she was already suffering from multiple sclerosis and was unable to appear. Hence the line spoken by Khan about how the worms killed her.
Oh Wow! I didn't know about the MS. I knew the original script had her in it, but in the later draft, she was removed. Thank you for the info!
Excellent video, great movie, I have all the Star Trek Original cast DVD's.
That is a collection worth having! Thank you for the kind words.
thank you for info on Rodenberry's "Star Trek 3" - never heard that before
My pleasure! It would have been a bonkers movie!
I must admit as a 64 year old guy, I STILL tear up during the Spock death scene. The interaction between Kirk and Spock is played so well, it is hard to believe it was simply two actors playing rolls. Then at Kirk's funeral speech where he chokes up saying "...his was the most, human".... 😢
Such an amazing scene.
- Not a "re-upload"? (First for Expanded Edition, I think?!)
- One could make a good argument that this film paved the way for other action-heavy Trek films - and away from the ponderous moral dilemmas and depictions of more mundane human conditions of many of the 1960s episodes.
- This film actually preceded the more flashy action flicks of the decade like Die Hard and The Terminator.
That's right!
Roddenberry's draft of Star Trek 2 kind of sounds like Star Trek first contact 😆 excellent video 🖖🏾
Thank you so much.🖖
It was a great movie......NO, It was the BEST movie, that reinvigorated Star Trek into a very successful franchise..
I loved Kirk's line "Aren't you dead?" in the beginning of the movie What a red herring to throw to an audience? I loved it.. Kahn has to be the best and most menacing villain ever..
It was an amazing movie, indeed! I hope you enjoyed the video.
Not just an outstanding Star Trek Movie....its an outstanding movie of arguably the best era for movies ......the 1980's.
One of the best movies of the 1980's... and of all time!
As part of his preparations for taking over the Enterprise, Khan undoubtedly would have reviewed the entire crew manifest to see the experience and capabilities of everyone on board, looking for weak points and people he might get to help him. Those records would have obviously included photos. Thus if Chekov was on board anywhere, even if Khan never met him, he "never forgets a face".
That's an interesting theory. 🙂 I like it.
good points, good thing this director is he took the time and cared to learn the series to make it work. can't wait for your review on Nemesis, where the director did the exact opposite. Khan in Star Trek 2 will always be best trek movie. thanks on sharing
And Thank You for your comment!
Totally Awesome. I didn't know that about the video tape sales. I used to work in a video store and knew that most movies purchased from the distributor where $100 each.
You're lucky. My dream in college was to work at a video store. That must have been a cool job!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast Pay sucked but I did get to watch movies all day.
@@mtnimt4724 It would have been my dream job in college!
Nicely done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Every time someone mentions Ricardo Montalban, I hear, "Rich Corinthian leather" just after that.
😅 I hear, "Tatoo."
Kirstie Alley said in Starlog magazine that the producers offered her considerably less money for the sequel so it wasn't her choice not to continue portraying the character.
Check out the next video! I talk about this.
Still the best ST flick. I'm a fan of the initial Abrams reboot, which is enormously entertaining, and ST4 ("the one with the whales") has its moments. But WoK is the one. It entertains, it makes you laugh, but most of all it hits you in the heart.
Remember....
''
Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home are such great movies. I also think 2009 Star Trek is up there.
I'm surprised that during your segment on James Horner you didn't mention that a significant chunk of his score for Wrath of Khan was lifted from his score for Battle Beyond the Stars...
I should have mentioned it. Thanks for mentioning it for me.
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast no worries. When you mentioned his pay for the score it made me think about how slick he was just recycling the music from a movie that bombed and porting it over to a movie that he knew was going to be epic! That's why you NEVER sell the rights to your music...
I'm confused by that, because I remember seeing a preview for BBTS and thinking it was ST2 music in the preview.
Was the music for Battle done first and ST2 came out first?
Collecting 3456 on 4k just at minute, these are really interesting thanks. The dr cut blu ray is best of 2 and just got The Voyage Home to get on 4k.
Amazing! And thank you for the kind words.
I was a Star Trek fan from the very beginning, when it was first broadcast on network TV in the late 60's. And kept up with it in syndication in the 70's. So like all Trekkers I was thrilled when I knew it was coming to the big screen. Sure---it did good among the die-hard fans, but mostly because you were SUPPOSED to like it, if you were a true Trekker. Need to break it to them gently---it was a worthless bore. So I was absolutely blown-away by The Wrath of Khan. It had everything that made the original Star Trek great. Not only for fans, but the general public.
I agree! It was so good, and elevated Star Trek to even greater heights!
Meyer would have used Miklos Rozsa for the score had he had the budget to do so. They worked together on time after time.
That's interesting.
Gene Roddenberry was removed from influencing the next picture. Part of the reason why the original series is so popular is because of the influence that the network writers and producers had on the series. Gene Roddenberry was also unhappy with that situation. The reason Star Trek was so popular was because others used the idea and framework of Star Trek from Gene Roddenberry, but then had other people edit and direct. The same kind of thing happened with Star Wars. George Lucas had full control of the prequel movies. And they were not that popular at the time when they came out. The original trilogy movies George Lucas had full control of the first one. And the others had a lot of influence from other directors. Even the very first Star Wars movie, the most popular of all, was greatly influenced by others who came in at the end to help him edit.
Sometimes, when a person who came up with the idea for a movie or TV series has full control, the result is not as good as getting good input from others.
You might be right!
The only problem I had with this movie was that Kahn died before the Enterprise went into warp, so he died thinking he beat Kirk. It would have been awesome if he saw the Enterprise escape and died knowing that Kirk once again beat the Superior Intelect. Otherwise, AMAZING film. My absolute favorite!
That would have been cool to see Khan watch the Enterprise warp away just before he exploded.
In a very real sense, he DID beat Kirk by costing him the life of his best friend. "I've done far worse than kill you. I've hurt you. I wish to go on...hurting you...." - Khan
@@Willpower-74205 But then came The Search For Spock.
@@VF31Rules Exactly! The fans would not have been on board with any stories that didn't find a way to bring Spock back, even if it meant reversing Khan's final act, not to mention giving Leonard Nimoy the director's chair. Good point! 🖖😎👍
Really surprised (and dismayed) by Gene Roddenberry's petulance, at trying to sabotage Wrath of Khan. The man certainly had a huge ego.
Gene Roddenberry was certainly a complex man.
Roddenberry was a hack that got lucky. He was a perpetual dick throughout his career...
Have you ever read the star trek 50 year mission books? They're books with interviews with all the cast and crew told in story format. It starts with TOS and goes all tge way to first JJ trek movie. It's hilarious and disturbing some of the things Gene said to the women on set. He must have been charismatic the amount of affairs he said. They're really good books. Some powerful woman in the star trek world asked gene what was wrong with him and Gene said all I want out of life is to have a powerful orgasm that goes on and on for hours lol she laughed it off but shows you what his mind was like
@@Keeper_Lock He ultimately got lost in the vision he created. Roddenberry tried the same thing on The Next Generation with a moratorium on any kind of interpersonal conflicts with the crew. By the end of the '80s, though, his health was starting to fail and he had to turn over control to Rick Berman. Berman was certainly more than willing focus the series more on character development. In the end, it's just as well that the creation outlived its creator. 🖖😎👍
Nooo the games not over!
Harve Bennett was the best thing that ever happened to that franchise!
I was a harfcore TOS fan when I saw the first Star Trek movie. I was very underwhelmed. It had little in common with the TV shows other than the characters. The worst part, hands down, was the loooong sequence showing the refurbished Enterprise sitting in the docking bay.
When you read what went on behind the scenes with the script writing you can see what the problem was. They needed to hire a high profile writer from the series with a singular vision to write the screenplay. Instead, it was a case of too many people involved with too many different ideas. It ended up pleasing no one.
This movie totally revived Star Trek after Star Trek The Motion Picture.
the Genesis sequence was created by those who later set up Pixar
Yup! And it all started here! And it looks really good.
25:15 Police Squad! was resurrected in the Silver screen, albeit with a different name (The Naked Gun).
Ooo. A great example!!!! Thank you. Can anyone think of any other examples?
Gene’s idea for Star Trek 2 was a really good one, although The Wrath of Khan turned out to be a phenomenal movie. Maybe they can use this sequel to ‘Forever’ for an upcoming film.
I don't know. It sounded a little crazy. Maybe he could have made it work.
"The gentleman who plays chekov"
Yes..?
Just think, instead of Wrath of Khan, we could have gotten The Assassination on the Edge of Forever.
haha! True! A small part of me wonders what that movie would have been like.
Time After Time took place in San Francisco, not New York.
Thank you.
Wait… Harve Bennett is Billy Quizboy???
Actually, it tracks.
🤣🤣🤣
Wrong HG Wells travels to San Francisco not Manhattan 🤦♂️
Oh man. My mistake. It's been a while since I've seen it. I love this movie. Thanks for the correction.
Damn good movie too
17:45 But did the car have fine Corinthian leather?
🤣🤣😀
Not Manhattan! San Francisco.
Oops. My mistake. I knew Time After Time takes place in San Francisco.
I do not understand Hollywood's fascination with time travel. Trek IV, the Kelvin timeline BS, etc. Its absurd. Infinite plot subject matter and we so often go the time travel route and what's worse, we have to involve contemporary Earth, pop culture, etc.
How many time travel stories did Voyager do? As Janeway said, I get a headache with temporal mechanics....
I think it's fun because it can never happen in reality.
Look, I'm a Star Trek fan, BUT the Motion Picture was a remake of "The Changeling" a TOS episode of Nomad who was changed into a more advanced probe!! To me it sucked!! "The Wrath of Khan" was indeed an excellent movie based from the TOS!!
I agree with you 100%!
These videos seem suspiciously similar to Rowan J. Coleman’s excellent retrospectives . . . . 🤔
Let me reduce your suspicions. My TH-cam videos come from my podcast which ran for 10 years. These are available on the internet, google "Totally Awesome Films Podcast" and you can listen to them. The Star Trek videos were released back in early 2014. You can see that my TH-cam video's script was from 2014. They are basically the same script with some expanded information from the book "The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek: The First 25 Years". 😊
7:50 Manhattan? You really can't tell the difference between Manhattan and San Fransisco?
Apparently not.
Then why is it we see Spock come back in Star 💫 Trek 3?if Spock dies in Star 💫 Trek 2!
what?
Roddenberry wasn't even a producer in this film. He was given the useless title of "Executive Consultant." It is like "Pope Emeritus."
Yes. I talk about it i this video. Check it out. 🙂
Successful resurrection ; Hawaii 5-0 ?
Another great example. Thank you
William Shatner was never a movie star. A TV star, maybe. And yea, he was in a few movies, but that doesn't make him a movie star.
You don't think his role in the Star Trek films qualify him?
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast No, not really. It was the same role he had on TV, so really the movies were just high budget TV shows without the normal restrictions of network television.
I could be biased, I don't like the man, personally.
Myself, found the Motion Picture was dry and boring. The Wrath of Khan was a great movie.
Roddenberry did some great things, but mostly his ideas were bad.
I have to agree with you.
You said "die hard trek fans'" loved Star Trek: The Motion Picture.. Wrong. I have been a Star Trek fan for years and like the 'casual viewers" (as you called them) I found STTMP boring, drawn out and without a real plot.
But you have to admit, the average die-hard fans were happy to have it back in 1979.
Ricardo Montalban was a CHAD
He was the GOAT!
The pastel uniforms from TMP were not dyed red. These were totally new uniforms with completely different tailoring.
Really? I heard much of the cloth was recycled.
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast correct
Yes. They were cycled. They were the same cloth.
The video is correct. The cloth was dyed red and retooled into the new uniforms.
dump the stock footage please? makes your efforts look cheap, otherwise I like your videos
Thank you. What do you mean by Stock footage specifically?
Don't listen to this guy, I like the footage. 🤣🤣🤣
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcaststock footage like the clapping group, the guy with the beer, the woman with the awkward face, parks and recreation headphones etc.
You need to do much better BASIC research!:( Trek creator Gene Roddenberry HATED this movie, chiefly because Producer Harve Bennett transformed Starfleet into a MILITARY body vs the PEACEFUL exploration body which Roddenberry had always envisioned and championed! Shocking that you completely MISSED this easily researchable FACT!:(
Gene Roddenberry actually created Star Trek The Original Series after the military to appeal to all the men who had returned from WOrld War 2 twenty years earlier, men like him. Harve Bennett and Gene Roddenberry already knew each other from 1965 and hated each other because Gene kicked Harve off of the set of The Long Hunt of April Savage for being "a meddling executive." Once Harve Bennett arrived on set, he completely disrespected Gene as the creator of Star Trek, and just openly disrespected him on the set, shocking some crew. The fact that the tensions between them were about Gene wanting Star Trek to be about exploration is true in reflecting Gene's changing attitude toward Star Trek, such as the uniforms, etc, but that being the core reason for the tension between them has actually been debunked. Trist me bro! I didn't miss any research. I just can't put everything in, or the video would be a rambling 3 hours. Still, I value you as a fan, and I hope you keep watching!
TNG was about peaceful space travel I don't think TOS was it was based around a naval ship novels and westerns. In almost every episode there would be a fist fight, some Kirk-fu , people dying or kirk making robots end themselves, spaceship battles, torture etc
You do know Star Trek is Fictional?!? Right?
You do realize that actual real people made Star Trek, right? 🤣
I don't think he knows that shows are actually made by real people and there's a fascinating story there. 😂😂😂
