Every time I see a submarine galley I am amazed at what the chefs are capable of in such a tiny space.
The training for a Naval Chef is the hardest, most stringent training of any branch of the Royal Navy.
Well, it must be, 'cos no bugger's passed it yet!! ;)

I live next to the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre, (BUTEC), on the NW coast of Scotland. I actually worked there when I left school. It’s a place where our own Navy and other Navies send their weapons, ships and submarines for testing and seeing submarines pop up out of the water and slink past the village is something pretty cool. Watching underwater torpedos being hoisted from the water into a net suspended from a helicopter is also pretty cool. HMS Astute ran aground up here a few years ago and I felt so bad for the crew as many boats have done the same. The Royal Navy also sends its Mine Clearance divers up here as the water is very deep and clear and perfect for training. I think submariners are incredible - spending months at a time below the surface, not seeing daylight or feeling fresh air and wind blow onto your face and hair must take incredible commitment. Living cheek to jowl with other folk for so long too…..they deserve respect for what many couldn’t do without cracking up. Think of those poor souls of the Thresher or the Kursk and how they died….that must play on the mind of a submarine crew when they do depth tests etc and they still manage to rock up and carry out duties. Our Perisher course for Submarine Commanders is the best in the world and I genuinely believe our Royal Navy is the highest standard of excellence in the Submarine world.
I often think about the Kursk, I didn't know about the Thresher, may they rest in peace 😢

I honestly can't believe you guys have basically got the same amount of personal space in the bedding and chill areas as a regular Destroyer or Cruiser. LOL That's soo cool.

There is no way I could do that. I felt claustrophobic just watching that clip.
That’s quite roomy for a submarine, the
Older boats were really cramped, especially the older diesels
This has much more space than the older Trafalgar class subs
Hope you guys in the navy and military overall are well,

My question is how do they get proper exercise and fitness while aboard this submarine?
They have a small gym on board, it doesn’t house much equipment but it has enough so that they can get a decent workout if you get what I mean
Do the Astutes go to sea often?
Artful doesn’t
How do they keep fit? Do they have a gym on board?
Not a dedicated gym, bits of equipment in each compartment usually a rower, some dumbells and bands
God bless you lad
might be a stupid question but do submarines have wee gyms? or is there a place or way the crew can maintain health and fitness?
They do have gym equipment on board to exercise.
Yes there is gym equipment on board
@ASL 72 You may laugh. But the Russian Typhoon class submarine does actually have a swimming pool inside it. Some Russian subs even had saunas.
Gee they love their badges these days..!! ;-)
Look at the stuff American military have on there day to day uniforms man you can hardly see the uniform for the name badges patches bells and ribbons everywhere. Compare other nations there's hardly any military bling. On it Americans there. Patches and bling for sure

Does anyone know how long these guys deploy for at a time. Well done to all the royal navy 🤗
A friend of mine almost became a submariner, but didn't sign on after training because he didn't fancy 9 month deployments (so I guess that's roughly how long things can be for them)
The average length of a patrol varies depending on mission, location and the condition of the sub but is usually between three and six months with the longest in Royal Navy history being 11 months, though on that patrol only seven submariners completed the full duration as the crew were swapped out in groups of 40 so that 120 of the sailors who went out with the sub were not the ones that brought it home.
Patrols of that length and with crew changes can only happen on an attack sub as they can return to the surface whenever they want unless ordered not to so resupplying them is not an issue, an attack sub crew is also allowed weekly contact with family in the form of 120-word telegrams. The newer Astute-class and the old-but-bold Trafalgar-class are attack subs.
The ballistic subs are a different story, they cannot surface for any reason as their entire existence depends on finding a safe place to hide from enemy attack subs and to stay there for the full six months waiting for a signal to nuke somebody. They have no contact with the surface for the entire duration so if a crew member dies aboard on the first day they get put in the freezer for six months, and their family doesn't find out until the sub comes home. The Vanguard-class are ballistic subs.
3 months or more
Ollie no it isn’t
Submarines can stay at sea for about 90 days before they need to dock to resupply food. So you won't be on/in the water for the full duration though.
Old diesel boats did not have such space
Hello
Crib? is this MTV in the early 2000s?
Cartoonman154: I thought that.
Don’t forget the “media” cell and the recruiters are just standard issue RN. Obviously you can work out the age of our editor here by his/her use of the phrase “crib”.........
I think it's meant to be a parody of MTV Cribs.
Stupid question. When these chaps are not at sea. Do they have there own room back on camp?
rico chilton ahhhh ok thanks mate
Yes they do have their own cabins back at base. And when they are deployed and go alongside they are often put up in hotels. These people deserve to be looked after.
In one minute eighteen seconds?
What is your question?
Could of ironed your top shipwreck....
Sadly submariners are paid really poorly compared to the national average and the amount of duties the seaman branch does per week compared to others puts them over the normal working week hours. The pension has also been slashed. There isn’t much incentive anymore since they removed submarine pay. Also the old submarine pay should reflect in your pension but they screwed the submariners out of that too. You would have to be desperate to join submarines now. I guess that’s why they have lowered to the entry standard to a historical level!
When did they remove submarine pay ?
You get a bonus of £7,500 once you receive your dolphins

He's really had to under what he's trying to say.....
I had the misfortune to read a bio of the Astutes captain. He could barely put a sentence together. He ran a multi billion boat into a sandbank. This navy is a joke.
You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. The Perisher course is regarded the world over as the toughest submarine command course there is.
Fornad Adûn Be that as it may a chinless wonder ran a billion pound boat aground. Lol. ..stupid is as stupid does. I see better seamanship in my dinghy club. One of the captains autobiography was grammatically incorrect childish gibberish.
The skipper on the Astute couldn’t get his shopping trolley back into the stack in Waitrose. Seems a Boy Scout Merritt badge in macrame is of more use than a perisher pass.
Niall Doyle: I think you should check your auto spell check before you cast aspersions.....
Phil B A fair enough point there Phil. I think the level of diligence differs between an occasional you tube posting and driving a boat that could annihilate most of Russia. He ran it aground ! Lord Mountbatten did the same with a destroyer.
No way I can stay in a submarine 😂 but thank you for serving 🫡
