The day Bradley Delp died the world lost one of the greatest vocalists ever. I don't often get teary when celebrities die, but I did with him, and Tom Petty. Brad's voice was one of a kind among male vocalists.

Agreed. Really, a one of a kind person also. So sad that someone so beloved, was as he wrote in his note, such a lonely soul. Rest in Peace 🕊️🙏 Bradley Delp

I was so blessed, to meet Brad Delp at the '86 NAMM show. He stopped by the Rockman booth, (incognito) with a handwritten name tag, simply reading "Brad." Thank god I recognized him, and got to thank him, for what he had given me, through the years. He was so humble and sweet. I still get emotional, hearing him...

I was at the concert in 79 as a 10 year old. The only reason I was allowed to go was because our whole street went, with parents and it was daytime. LOL This was my first concert ever. Seen Boston 20 more times since, but I remember this one like it was yesterday.

The 70's version sounds real, live, anolog, tubes amps, has energy and youth may factor in a lot of course. Tonally considering the recorded quality here is just sounds "real". 2014 is very disturbingly digital, crispy sounding. Some typeof phone recording?? There seems to be very little energy in this version. 2014 makes me think of bands with players with lots of money, tons and tons of equipment and mediocre skills. A faint shadow of what Boston once was. Not saying this as a keyboard warriors or to offend the many Boston fans....it's simply evident. Its a sign of the times....

Great job breaking this down. That Boston lineup was so dang good, it's a shame Tom disbanded this group. I wish I had seen these guys then. I've seen alot of epic west coast shows listed from back in the day, for instance ironically first on the Anaheim bill was Sammy Hagar, then Van Halen, then Sabbath, then headlining was Boston. This was 1978 ! Could you imagine??!!!. Which leads me to my first Brad Delp encounter. In 1982 a good friend of my family asked if I'd like to go see her nephew perform at the providence civic center. I was 16,recently driving, In my 3rd yr of playing in bands and immediately said of course ,not knowing any details. Then she said his band is opening for zz top(eliminator tour). She then said he plays keys for Sammy Hagar, Well ,hell ya!! And to boot it was front row seats and backstage passes. This was a dream come true, I was a concert junkie, I'd already seen some incredible shows like kiss dynasty, VH in 1980 , J Geils, def lepp, just to name a few. Well nothing prepared me for what I'd see and experience. Everything went as expected, meet Sammy and his band( all super nice), but during his set, he brought out Brad Delp to sing the "remember the heroes duet ", a song he recorded with Mike Reno of Loverboy. Keep in mind, Boston has been M.I.A for yrs now. I was awestruck at what I was witnessing! So after the set I went backstage again but this time Brad Delp was there. Ya I geeked out, but I was 16 meeting one of my heroes. He was so humble,so gracious even though I was gushing all over him. I was so out of my mind I only took a couple photos. But ya talk about remember the heroes..I'll never forget that night. Anyhoo, sorry so long winded, I actually met him again in 91 and he freaking remembered me! That's how humble and real this guy was. Great content my dude

Having met Brad several times (seems like anyone growing up in the Boston area must have) - he was a genuine person. No ego. At an RTZ show in the early 90s, he was sitting by himself out front as the doors opened and was happy to just talk to whoever wanted to meet him. His was the only death of a famous person (other than Neil Peart) that actually upset me.

Ok a lot to unpack here. I'm 67 years old and have been to at least 150 concerts.
Boston is probably in my top 5 of favorite bands yet I never saw them back in the day. They didn't seem to tour as much. We always heard Tom disliked playing live. Plus the word on the street was they didn't sound good live. Remember when the Boston album came out there was no band, just Tom. So they didn't have the chance to jell together the old fashioned way.
Fast forward 40 years! I finally had the chance to see Boston. They were at one of my favorite venues, Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Fl. A medium sized venue that always had great sound. It was pretty much the same lineup as this video. #1 thing that hit me right away was how low the volume was. I've never heard a concert there that low. #2 the guitars which should be leading the way we're buried in the mix. #3 Tommy had such an uninspiring boring style and nonchalantly wandered the stage. Very boring, disappointing concert.
Fast forward 2 years. Boston is back, same venue, same lineup, unfortunately with the same result.
I never wanted to enjoy a concert more. I honestly don't understand the low volume thing.
    Thanks for reading.

7:08. Tom invented a box he called a "Doubler" that was used during recording and live, an early Chorus effect. You can hear it heavily used on some live soundboard recordings, especially noticeable on the King Biscuit Flower Hour recording from Long Beach Arena. Barry sounded like he had a great voice. It's a shame he never had the confidence to sing on any of his albums

Dude, you noticed everything I did!!
Old footage, hands down. Way more wild spirit, and I'll take the rough patches- and notice each time Brad was a bit flat, he caught it, and came up to pitch. You can rehearse the life out of a show.
Fran the man, or Energizer Bunny- bass player must do the Zakk Wylde logo. haha I always did.
The Steve Harris move (better have strap locks) was initiated by Overend Watts of Mott The Hoople - stolen from Bill Wyman, who, in the early days, looked like he was hugging an upright. haha
Great stuff, Mike, thanks. Ü ♫

That box is a Conn StroboTuner mounted on a stand in his eye-line (I assume the wires are a split so that it's "always on"). You can actually see the same tuner in the 1979 video as well, sitting on the riser at the right foot of the organ. Tom S likes to be in tune and doesn't trust anything but a strobe.

For a '70s rock band like Boston to sound good playing outdoors at a football stadium, they have overcome almost insurmountable issues, plus they have to be very, very tight and polished. Open-air venues like Giant Stadium have so many environmental variables going against the sound systems. What you have working against you (the PA) is natural reverb and echo, sound bouncing off hard surfaces, the winds can be swirling around, challenges with swings of temperature and humidity at various points, etc. The fact that this '70s era video w/ 240P resolution in mono (TH-cam) sounds as good as it does is a minor miracle!

I saw them live in '16 in Omaha, it was the best sounding concert I ever experienced, and I saw a lot of 'em in my day. This is my favorite song from them and when they played it, everything was pure sonic crystal clear clarity and power, it felt like I was flying during the middle cresendo-like guitar part, it was pretty amazing! I heard that Tom S is a huge stickler for sound quality and it showed. I'm guessing that is why the drums are shielded, to help prevent mic bleed which results in better sound quality.

I’m catching a lot of the same things that you are, from the gear to the vocals, and after I notice it, you talk about it. Kinda cool. I suspect, a lot of the gear is going line-in to the board and that makes it easy to control the sound. The only things that could go rogue are the open mikes on the vocals and drums, so that’s the reason for the drum shield. The only thing that really makes crazy here is Tommy absolutely mailing in any kind of excitement. This ain’t rehearsal. Act like you want to be there. You’re in an iconic band, presumably in front of a large crowd. Great voice for a wet paper sack. I saw Boston back at the Texas Jam in ‘87. Great show.

Hey Mike, hopefully you're doing well.
First of all, I'd like to thank you for all of the amazing content you're constantly putting out, whether it be the lessons, the curious details behind famous guitar parts/songs, or reviews.
I'm writing this to you today because I have a question to ask you. A video idea, maybe, even.
My question for you is, how in the world do I start learning those shreddy and sometimes one-take/improvised on the spot guitar solos ? They're so complicated and tedious to learn in my opinion.
The solos in question I really want to learn are mainly Megadeth ones, Dave Mustaine solos specifically (mainly My Last Words and Holy Wars). There are so many notes in quick succession, insane alternate picked licks all happening at blistering speeds, aggressiveness without much spacing or melodic phrasing (not a critique, I love that). And because of those aspects, I'm completely lost and have no idea where to start. Learning it slow and steady feels wrong because of how many notes there are.
Believe it or not, I have better time learning Marty/Poland solos because they're more articulate and have space between key moments. They're way easier to pick up for me.
I don't know, maybe I'm weird and should just persist learning it the traditional way, but maybe you'd have a different perspective on this subject, and if so, I'd like to know.
I'm sorry to comment something that isn't related to the video by the way, but I have no choice but to ask you, as I think that you're the only person that can help me (and probably many many other guitarists) in my situation.
Thank you for reading this, have a great one !

Boston actually holds a place in my heart because it was the first date me and my girlfriend now my wife went on it was in 1997 and it was an evening with Boston no opening act and from what I remember it was mostly all original members. They played an awesome set and I’ll never forget it. Rest in peace to all the members of Boston we’ve lost over the years so glad I got to see basically the original band over 25 years ago.🤘🏼🎸🎼💿🎶

Anything to see Brad, Sib, Fran, Barry & Tom again. Even at their ages today. Tommy is a superfan whose voice actually improved. They got lucky. Gary's been a decent sideman for nearly 50 years. The others great touring musicians. But I miss the Magic vs Nostagia. Great comparison video 👍

I saw them on this tour in Flagstaff AZ with Sammy Hagar opening up for them. They were both amazing and Brad's voice was perfectly strong. Here, it sounds like he was struggling a little bit with his range. I feel very privileged to have had that experience.

I was 15 when I saw Boston, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, and Sammy Hagar at Anaheim Stadium Ca sept 1978. Needless to say, it was pretty awesome.
A couple things. Brad Delp RIP was shy and somewhat timid in general. Tom Scholz the brainchild, made Boston happen.
From what's been said over time, apparently/allegedly the albums producer, engineer, co-writer, and tech wizard, wasn't real generous to the singer/songwriter. By comparison Tom Scholz net worth is $100 million+ Brad Delp's net worth (atod) in 2007 was $500,000. Boston wouldn't have been if not for both musicians.
Imo, Brad RIP deserved more. He certainly helped earn it!

I'm old, I prefer the '79 version! Rock-n-Roll should be a little raw around the edges (IMHO). Also I was fortunate enough to see Boston and Van Halen (along with Poco and The Outlaws) on the same bill in the summer of 1979! Boston was great, but saw first hand why bands dreaded following up VH in their prime!

Fran Sheehan was a monster live. And great headbanging, gets into it! I saw the 2000s version a bunch of times. They were amazing, sound was pure. The first time I didn’t know what to expect just went. Blew my hair back. Gary Pihl and Tom with the unison leads, lifted me out of my body.

Thank you Mike. This was nice to see. Boston is my fav of all time. I know that sounds a bit of hyperbole but ask my wife. She knows how I rank Boston.
Early version of course, but love tickets to a current line-up non-the-less. Tommy is quite a good vocalist for this band for sure.

Enjoying this video Mike. One thing that might explain Tommy DeCarlo's more thoughtful approach to lead singing there is that is maybe a year after joining the band. Tommy wasn't in a band before so trying to meld with the band would take time especially for someone who has never had to be that guy. More recent videos of live performances show Tommy getting more comfortable with being out there in front. Is he as out there as Brad? No, but he's gotten better for sure.

This will sound heretical, but Brad Delp, so glorious on record, is pretty hit-and-miss in the old footage. Their bassist is killing it, though. You're right about their newer singer: as good as he is technically, he seems pretty bored up there on stage, like it's just another day at the office.

I agree…the live recordings never sound good, especially Brad. But I saw them live twice and he was fantastic in person. I think that’s the reason Scholz never released a live album.

22:10 it's a Strobe tuner with a shield on it so Tom can see it better during daytime shows. IN these later shows Tom had quite a "Space Station" in front of him lol. He also has two Mackie studio monitors that I believe he only runs the guitar through so he can get feedback on the spot if he wants it since they're using in ears.

I feel a little sad every time I listen to Boston, just thinking of Brad and the circumstances of his death. Such a unique and talented guy, sucks he's no longer around.
I can definitely feel and hear the joy in his voice and see it in his stage presence. It'll be the anniversary of his passing in 3 days. I shall play some Boston nice and loud.

1979 they obviously had technical problems between the back of the stadium and the on stage cameras. In those days, analog NTSC video, it was so easy to happen, particularly at an ad hoc venue like the floor of a stadium. Something, maybe a ground loop, or Jimmy Hoffa was messing with the burst signal. It might have even looked OK in the truck but by the time the tape machine saw it, it didn't understand it, so you see it re-adapt or sync to having burst on the camera switch to the cameras at the back of the house. There is a glitch on every such cut. Beyond it being NTSC, the tape machines of 1979 were not very portable. I don't see 2" quad artifacts. This probably got saved on a 3/4" U Matic which left a lot to be desired even in those days.

I grew up on Boston. My Dad was a guitar player and loved Tom. If we were in the car, Boston was on the tape deck. I never thought I would get the chance to see them live, but I did get the chance in 1988 in Hamilton Ontario Canada ( The Concert is here on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/zcbNNuEzH2M/w-d-xo.html ). Tom had a leg cast on due to an accident he had. It was one of the best show ever.

    ROCK SUPER BOWL VII
May 27, 1979, Featuring Boston, The Doobie Brothers, Poco, and AC/DC. Boston was the Headliner and AC/DC was an unknown lead-off group. Who remembers Poco? That concert was before regulations went in that the volume couldn't be above a certain decibel level. It was even advertised as having something like 4000 watts of power. (Maybe it was 400) needless to say, I had trouble hearing for a few days after. Bon Scott and Angus were amazing, but then Boston started Long Time. Wow.

I saw Boston in 1979 I believe at the Rainbow in London, they only had two albums to pick a set from but they put on a great show and relatively unfamiliar as they were to me at the time don't recall them padding the set out with covers or borrowed encores, it was all their own material. Rest in peace Bradley, such a sad loss to us all.

Tom and Brad were like peanut butter and chocolate. Saw Boston live a few times in the late 80's - early 90's. Neither of these videos do justice to the live sound quality I experienced in person, but still awesome. Boston is one of the bands I spent hundreds of hours playing along to in my basement learning to drum. Thanks for the video!

I saw Boston on the 1979 tour as a teenager . While I was and still am a huge fan (I own a vintage Rockman) my main recollection of the concert was being hugely disappointed. For whatever reason, they came across as very disengaged and just going through the motions. I remember doing something I had never done at a concert before - getting up out of boredom and just walking around the concourse of the arena, which was pretty packed with probably close to 18,000 people, but the whole place just seemed dead, no energy.
I’m sure every band has off nights during a tour, especially the way the record companies basically abused the bands with insane schedules back then, but this was the first time I had experienced it in person.
