+Marek Generowicz Because the Pinlock Insert is basically a second lens when installed in your faceshield, light from car brakelights and street lights can appear to be doubled when riding at night. So instead of seeing one set of brakelights from a car in front of you, you also see a second set, slightly offset, because some of the light is being bent as it passes through both the face shield and the Pinlock insert. For some, this can be disconcerting, while for others, it doesn't bother them. -DrewZilla
This is why I wish they'd just make it work without the pinlock. I love Shoei quality, but Scorpion never fogged on me with just their chemical application - no second lens needed.
I have a pinlock system on my Schubert CS3. It is very fog free. Works well there. One downside of the pinlock system is the ability to get dust in between the lens and shield. I ride an adventure touring bike and in dusty conditions, dirt and dust will eventually get in that space. Its not too hard to clean at an hotel, but it might be a PITA to clean while camping. But it really does work.
Hi Nathan, I would say it depends on the time of day you do most of your riding. Swapping Pinlock lenses daily will wear out the silicone bead too quickly. If you do some of your riding in low light or at night, I would suggest the clear lens. If you only ride in daylight and want the extra tint, go for the smoke version. ~Ali
The silicon bead can wear out over time from being installed repeatedly. If you are trying to swap it out on a daily basis, I would recommend a second Pinlock lens for your second helmet. If you are only swapping it once a season, it should be okay Also keep in mind, the Pinlock lenses are not universal. Unless you have two identical helmets (or faceshields), they are not interchangeable. ~Ali
Been using the pinlock insert for 6 months now, one of the best things I've ever bought, I would recommend this to anyone! Ive got a clear insert with a clear visor and the vision is excellent.
Thank you for the feedback. I use a Pinlock set-up on my Arai during the colder winter months here in Philadelphia on my commute to work and it works great. ~Ali
Thank you for the feedback. We don't carry Airoh helmets, but I have a Pinlock on my Arai Quantum 2 and it works perfectly. I can see that with some shields, it might distort light, but it's never been noticeable with my set up. ~Ali
I needed a new clear windshield and was going to order the standard replacement for my Shoei RF-1000, but watched video and read reviews of the pinlock shield system and decided to try it. I am surprised how well it works regardless of weather temps/moisture. It says daytime use only, but I have had no issues leaving it on and using at night.
I've been using this product for a few months and absolutely love it. I've lost my pins however and can't for the life of me find anywhere to buy new pins. I went out and purchased a new pinlock lens but it only came with one pin. I now have 2 good lenses and only 1 pin. I refuse to purchase another lens when all I need is the pin. I've emailed Pinlock USA. We'll see what their response is.
Yes, the Pinlock Shield and PInlock Lens are separate items. You can choose the tint for the shield based on how much light/sun you want to let in. Then, the Pinlock lens takes care of fog for you. Common misconception - the Pinlock lens really has nothing to do with tint, although they have sold them in tints in the past. The main point is anti-fog. -CK
Best investment for any helmet. The anti-fog performance can't be beat, with the benefit of having multiple coloured visors in one, which makes it an excellent value. only down side is the visor has to be removed to uninstall/reinstall an insert, but you would do so anyways when replacing different visors.
Depending on the age of the Pinlock lens, it could be time to replace it. After installing and uninstalling it several times, the silicone bead can loose it's ability to adhere properly. When cleaning the Pinlock lens, make sure to use a mild solution of soap and water, as many cleaners can deteriorate the silicone bead. ~Ali
In my previous helmet it came with pinlock. The helmet i use now didnt come with it, without post too. After a bit of looking i now have a pinlock lens but instead of using posts. Its a sticky lens, like a sticker it sticks inside the shield. And it great and it also adjust too bright light/sunlight, wouldnt want a helmet without a pinlock. Not having your shield fog up is great.
The purpose of Pinlock is mainly for anti-fog use. I would not recommend using any tints at night time, with the possible exception of amber. For sunglare, you are best using a tinted shield and not a lens, as the glare will come through at the top border where the lens does not cover. -CK
I got one of these for free with my Shoei. Had been wearing the helmet for about 3 months before I got around to installing the pinlock. God damn this is incredible. Wish I'd installed it immediately. Winter fogging is a big problem, but now is completely gone. So damn good. Worth the money if your visor always fogs at the lights. - Western Australia.
I have the pin lock system with the yellow lens. I bought the shield and insert thinking it was a luxury purchase. For any type of cold riding this should be non-optional safety equipment.
Another good job Revzilla! Sometimes these basic things that you take for granted aren't really known by everyone esspecially new riders. Nice Vader too!
I had a bad experience that started with the helmet and ended with the pinlock. The helmet ($400 Airoh miro xpr) fogged at any speed under 25 mph. With the pinlock there was no fog at all, but it reflected and multiplied every single light in the street. The helmet was unusable with or without the pinlock at night. Sold it and ordered an AGV.
Got a pinlock from the factory on my Nolan N104 I got from these guys. It just works, and you don't have to clean and reapply any coating like when you use the SCUBA or rainx sprays and the like.
My Shoei pinlock recommends against night use. The two lenses are hit by light and sparkle brightly. Pretty, but not recommended for night riding. I had to pull over and take the lense off.
take the pinlock out and make sure it and the visor is dry before putting it back together making sure you dont have any gaps when you put the pinlock back on
Thanks for this! I just got a Shoei GT-Air (Wander blk/ylw) and the pinlock instructions weren't very clear about how to install it. It was still quite a pain, but watching this video got me on the right path of actually flexing the visor as flat as I could get it. Now if only the dropdown sun visor was a little more fog-resistant....
One thing to take care of tough is my scorpion exo 1000 didn't close as well as before due to my gopro mount ( now removed) and i had a water leak (in a water shower ) at the top of my shield, water ran in and got under the pinlock and then it doesn't work anymore :) so make sure you close your shield properly in the rain :)
Sorry Munky332, Shoei doesn't make any Spectra Pinlock visors. My two cents: Go Spectra for the summer, and get a standard Pinlock for the cold and rain. -CK
Bought it april 28th when i also bought my 2012 F800 GS ;) 3700 km / 2300 miles later its already broken, i hope that is not the case or else i bought a lemon :) (not with you but my local dealers, so don't worry i wont hit on your awesome returns and service! ) :) Ill check it out when i can at home thanks for the comment!
Alright, I will definitely go with the clear then, I think it should be sufficient seeing how the RST is more protective than say a regular dark smoke anyways. Thanks again!
When should we use this pinlock system ? Should we only use it in cold days ? Is it wise to use this pinlock permanently on our helmet just to be safe against this fogging issue, no matter how the weather is ? Can you briefly explain when does riders use pinlock system, how long do they use it ? When should they replace them ?
+M. Yıldırım You can use it all the time. Install it in your shield and leave it there. The Pinlock insert is a bit delicate, so you shouldn't remove it a lot. You should replace the Pinlock shield or insert if it gets really scratched. -DrewZilla
Hey Ali! I was wondering which color pinlock is ideal to go under a Gold RST Mirrored shield. Clear seems correct because the mirror is there, and smoke seems correct because it would just add more shade(maybe too much). Please let me know! Thanks!
Also, in some points the pinlock touched the shield and created very distracting stains. I think I am the only unhappy Pinlock and Airoh customer. The system was installed by the local authorized dealer.
Probably a dumb question, but will I have any problems using a clear Pinlock with a dark smoke visor? Should I have gotten the tinted pinlock for the tinted visor?
Do pinlock shields usually come in different tints, like regular shields, or is it usually restricted to clear with different tints on the pinlock lens?
Bought a pin lock for my sedici strada animale and I’ve tried for hours to put it on and i don’t know if it’s to big or I’m just not putting it on right
I just realized that your pinlock ready faceshields do not say RST Gold Mirrored, just regular, does that mean that they are less protective? Just curious.
I've had issues with pin lock lenses... Hello. I am totally new to pinlock. I am thinking of buying a full-face helmet again. (I bought an IS-17 last year, sold it, and now I regret having done that.) The dealer told me that once you install the pinlock lens, you shouldn't remove it. My question is, is this true? I am concerned because I like cleaning my helmets regularly with water and since there is going to be a gap between the pinlock lens and the actual faceshield, water will surely get inside that space. I'm thinking of getting another IS-17 or the FG-ST and both come with a pinlock lens included. Thank you.
You can remove the Pinlock, but the more you do it, the more quickly it degrades. Try cleaning just the outside of the shield while it's still attached to the helmet. -DrewZilla

Hey, I was looking into buying a Pinlock Shield for my HJC helmet. Found the right shield and whatnot, but I was a little confused. When purchasing, I am asked to pick a color (clear, smoke, etc), but at the bottom there is a disclaimer that says "anti-fog lens sold separately". Does the shield come with a lens or not? 0:57 "shom shields" 😂😂😂 I wouldn't have been able to say that properly either.

I find your lack of faith...disturbing.
The RST is a mirrored coating, it's not really related to visor protection. ~Ali
I would be useless without Revzilla. Great video as usual.
Nice. I can't imagine winter riding here in Philly without my Pinlock. ~Ali
How you held the shield to pop the pinlock in place helped me with the no fingerprint issue brotha, thanks
Inspired use of Darth Vader to demonstrate anti-fogging.
Thank you for describing such a WONDERFUL FEATURE!! So pumped to pick up my first lens!

Love the Pinlock system, had this set up on all three of the Arai helmets I've owned, highly recommended!
Not really. There are a few 'amber' or 'gold' shields that come close, but anything besides clear will worsen your vision at night. -CK
The dark smoke pinlock shield is actually darker than the spectra shields in my opinion. -CK
Now i know the mechanism of anyi-fog visor. Air trap is the orginal mechanism. Thanx for describing this issue so simply.
Technically, Pinlock works via the combination of the air gap as well as the porous surface of the Pinlock lens insert. -DrewZilla
hi
this was interesting one and knowledgeable
i am not sure if you have any video on hydraulic clutch system, if not could you do one.
Also, in some points the pinlock touched the shield and created very distracting stains. I think I am the only unhappy Pinlock and Airoh customer. The system was installed by the local authorized dealer.

Great video, very helpful. So would you say it's better to fit a clear pinlock to a smoked visor than a smoked pinlock to a clear visor?
I'd say it's personal preference. I like having one face shield to worry about and a few Pinlock lenses to choose from. -Hi-Viz Brian
Thank you~ I was always unclear about this! Moving to England, I think I ought to invest for my Arai.
I have one and its best investment for a helmet. I commute at cold nights and it keeps inside helmet nice and toasty
Soon, my friend.
Anytime, friend. ~Ali
I love how you power through all the tongue twisters!!!!!!
Thanks for the very informative video on pinlock. Now I know how it works and how to use it correctly I'll order an inside screen.
Unfortunately, there is no way to retrofit your face shield with a locking mechanism. ~Ali
Do you use it when it rains or do you have to remove it when raining?
Excellent explanation man. The detail of the Mug Vader was just sweeeeet jajajajajajaja
Fantastic video. Answered all my questions about pin lock. Thanks

I've had issues with pin lock lenses... I keep a clear lens in my shield at all times but like to have a smoke lens in my backpack so I can swap if I'm riding facing the sun for a long period of time. I keep the smoke lens safe in it's own separate compartment in my bag but it became contaminated with what looks like little bacteria as if looking through a microscope. There are these little worms all over the lens and they don't come off no matter how many times I clean it or soak it. Now it also happened to my clear lens... I bought a replacement clear lens a few months ago, stuck it in the shield and don't dare to touch it. So far so good. This system works wonders in terms of preventing fogging but this contamination issue I'm having is a real downer. Has anyone else encountered this problem and does anyone know how to clean this bacteria / residue off the lens? Revzilla rules!!!
Can a Pinnlock lens come without the silicone bead ? for Nolan N60-5
Is there a way to install this type of tech or any alternative on a helmet like bell elliminator that's not pinlock ready? My goal is to find a transition solution for my bell elliminator.
I have them for my Arai Corsair V/RX-Q. They are fantastic, completely fog free.
Only if they made some for eye glasses xD...
Thanks for another great informative guide.
Have a look at the Protectint Pinlock insert.
thats unfortunate, because i get the fog even during the summer when im stopped. is there any alternative, say a coating, i can do?
got a question.. is there any visor or lense for a helmet that can be used during the day and during the night?
Breath normalized?
It's simple insulation so the inner screen does not get cold enough to produce condensation that's all.

At what outside temperature does a visor start fogging?
Good informative video. Mine has become loose. Do they shrink or degrade over time? Nolan 104 EVO 2 years old. Do I need a new one??
Yes, they can change slightly over time, though you can also usually twist the pins to adjust the pressure on the lens insert. If adjusting the pins doesn't work, it may be time for a new lens insert. -DrewZilla
I absolutely love this videos. They really teach you A LOT.
