i played rugby for over 10 years since a kid, i was part of all portuguese younger rugby national teams (u17, 18, 20) and played with 6 players (the youngest) who are part of this team. Growing up in an amateur sport, for 10 years all we could DREAM OF was to even get a single paycheck or, god forbid, to even qualify for a world cup again after 2007 Seeing friends of mine tie to Georgia, kick Australia down, and winning against Fiji... is one of the most emotional moments of my life and every single portuguese rugby player, is even bigger than the biggest dream we ever had Thanks brothers

It is interesting that, in all other group matches Fiji played previously, I would say 99% of Portuguese were rooting for Fiji. Even the TV commentators were quite biased in expressing their support for Fiji. For obvious reasons, that was not the case in our game against you, but you played fair, and were quite courteous in defeat. I expect Portuguese viewers, commentators (and, probably, most players too) will revert back to rooting for Fiji. Hope you perform at your best against England. That should be more than enough to get the win!
The Portuguese were very impressed by the Fiji team sportsmanship who offered the Portuguese team some souvenirs after the game. That was class! 👏 All the best.🤜🤛

I'm a youth football coach back in Portugal and this week my kids warmed up before practice by playing rugby. Even though I work with some kids that play both football and rugby, their interest in rugby had never been this high! I do prefer football, but it was refreshing to see them so excited.
Irish players were not messing when they said Portugal gave them a very difficult practice match in training camp. Well done to Portugal. Incredible players ; so well coached and should have won more games. Heads High guys!

Yes, there needs to be a promotion relegation system setup . Portugal has fine young players and core of team will still be around for next WC

South African here. What a game by Portugal, I love Fiji as well, but I couldn't help rooting for Portugal to take the win, by just enough to still see Fiji advance to the quarters. Portugal played like a top team, not at all like 16th (now 13th) in the world. They are obviously well coached and fit. I almost cried with them and their fans in the end
We were ranked 18th when we qualified at 80+2 minutes with a draw against USA, and we were 20th a couple of months earlier when we narrowly made it to the last qualifying tournament. This is such a huge step-up in performance from only a couple of years ago it is hard to the describe. There aren't that many people closely following rugby in Portugal, but those that do, are incredibly proud of what our boys accomplished. It's by very very far the greatest moment in the history of our national team.
As a portuguese, that's beautiful man... that's truly humble human compassion/empathy. This comment almost brought tears to my eyes, that's how profound we can be with each other (even at long distance) when we allow ourselves to feel each others. Blessings 🙏

I am a football fan and i just watch Rugby matches when Ireland plays because my kids were born in Ireland and honestly IRELAND actually is the strongest nation in Rugby. I never thought i would get so emotional with Rugby, not because i am Portuguese (they have always been bad in Rugby in the past), but not in this competition. They deserved more than just 1 win. They have played magnificent, intense, passionate rugby. Thanks for the great times. Every world cup need teams like Portugal. The underdog gave real troubles to the strong teams. You don't have to be Irish people to have loved Team Portugal, every Rugby fans in the world loved this team. And more than anywhere in the world apart from Portugal, it's in France! I was delighted in front of my TV to see this Portugal team play, full of dynamism and desire, particularly during its victory against Fiji. The Portuguese players gave a great response to those who said that Portugal had stolen the place on the mat from another team, this is false, Portugal deserved to be in the 2023 World Cup! It's in France that we love your team the most outside of Portugal (after Les Bleus of course ^^) for their play and desire but also because 7 at 8 players in the Premium Portuguese XV are Franco-Portuguese with dual nationality don't forget that. They are French-trained Rugby players. And many more than 8 play in France in championships of various levels. In my opinion after this World Cup, we will quickly see the 2 or 3 best Portuguese players appear in the TOP14, the famous French pro championship, the richest national championship and with the highest world level. These players will therefore strengthen themselves more quickly by playing in the TOP14 and this will make the Portugal team progress more quickly. BRAVO PORTUGAL! 👍👏

@@lfsm9380 Thomas Ramos is a Frenchman who chose to play for his country France and he will remain so. Furthermore, the World Rugby regulations are clear on this, when once you are an adult you have chosen your national team based on those where you can play, and if you have played at least 1 match with it, you can no longer go play for another national team. We have an opposite case in France of a very good player, Ange Capuozzo who plays with Italy but who is really by all his life French like Ramos and the French who chose to play for Portugal, sorry. The Italian team called him 4 years ago when he was still very young (World Rugby regulations allow it since one of his grandfathers is Italian...) and had never was called by a French National Young team, he said "yes", probably thinking at that time that he would never have the level to be called up to Les Bleus (anecdote, he didn't speak Italian, only French his mother language and had to learn it at that time ^^). And now even if Les Bleus wanted to call him and if Capuozzo wanted to come to the French team, he could no longer.
This was such an emotional game to watch. It's great to see some of the so called "minnows" play inspired rugby and go out and win a match, especially against a good side. Portugal played well throughout the whole tournament. I'm very happy for the players and the coaching staff, but to see the emotion in all their fans faces at the final whistle was priceless. Well done Portugal 🇵🇹 from an Irish fan. 🇮🇪

I watched a couple of Portugal’s qualifying games and was impressed with the fluidity and invention they showed. Thankfully, that flair wasn’t stifled by the magnitude of their task in this World Cup and they again played some fabulous rugby. They are a credit to themselves, their coaching staff, their clubs and their country and I can only hope that England (my own nation) watches and learns from Portugal and Fiji and Samoa - beautiful, fast rugby is not losing rugby!

I'm portuguese and i don't care about rugby, but watching my countrymen celebrating this high... it must have been such an achievement! The portuguese rugby league is beyond amateurish and beating a nation from the Pacific is a BIG win, it has to be!

I was delighted in front of my TV to see this Portugal team play, full of dynamism and desire, particularly during its victory against Fiji.
The Portuguese players gave a great response to those who said that Portugal had stolen the place on the mat from another team, this is false, Portugal deserved to be in the 2023 World Cup!
It's in France that we love your team the most outside of Portugal (after Les Bleus of course ^^) for their play and desire but also because 7 at 8 players in the Premium Portuguese XV are Franco-Portuguese with dual nationality don't forget that. They are French-trained Rugby players.
And many more than 8 play in France in championships of various levels.
In my opinion after this World Cup, we will quickly see the 2 or 3 best Portuguese players appear in the TOP14, the famous French pro championship, the richest national championship and with the highest world level. These players will therefore strengthen themselves more quickly by playing in the TOP14 and this will make the Portugal team progress more quickly.

Thomas Ramos is a Frenchman who chose to play for his country France and he will remain so.
Furthermore, the World Rugby regulations are clear on this, when once you are an adult you have chosen your national team based on those where you can play, and if you have played at least 1 match with it, you can no longer go play for another national team.
We have an opposite case in France of a very good player, Ange Capuozzo who plays with Italy but who is really by all his life French like Ramos and the French who chose to play for Portugal, sorry.
The Italian team called him 4 years ago when he was still very young (World Rugby regulations allow it since one of his grandfathers is Italian...) and had never was called by a French National Young team, he said "yes", probably thinking at that time that he would never have the level to be called up to Les Bleus (anecdote, he didn't speak Italian, only French his mother language and had to learn it at that time ^^). And now even if Les Bleus wanted to call him and if Capuozzo wanted to come to the French team, he could no longer.

This was such an emotional game to watch. It's great to see some of the so called "minnows" play inspired rugby and go out and win a match, especially against a good side. Portugal played well throughout the whole tournament. I'm very happy for the players and the coaching staff, but to see the emotion in all their fans faces at the final whistle was priceless. I watched a couple of Portugal’s qualifying games and was impressed with the fluidity and invention they showed. Thankfully, that flair wasn’t stifled by the magnitude of their task in this World Cup and they again played some fabulous rugby. They are a credit to themselves, their coaching staff, their clubs and their country and I can only hope that England (my own nation) watches and learns from Portugal and Fiji and Samoa - beautiful, fast rugby is not losing rugby!
