As a casual photographer, I've been happily editing while on the move or even at home on the sofa with the latest iPad Mini 6. Really nice to use the new stylus and the form factor is big enough for me. It doubles as a great device for other tasks and gaming.
One of the most realistic and honest review I've seen so far about the iPad Pro used in photography. Thanks a lot for this!
Roman - just wanted to say I've only discovered you fairly recently (last few weeks) and I really love your approach to making videos and approach to photography. You are a talented dude and I love that you don't exclusively review the latest and greatest gear, but actually focus on the art of photography and a lot of the other things that eventually get forgotten on TH-cam channels. Thanks for doing what you do! Also - LOVE that you have a traditional blog. Keep it coming.
Love the cold open.. Just getting on with it.. Editing on with a pencil is so incredibly natural. I could not switch back . Having said that I am waiting on capture one coming to the IPAD. I don’t like the Lightroom.
yeah, the closest I could get is the Wacom tablet with the Mac... still not quite the same tho .... more testing needed
I've been looking at using my iPad while on trips but the biggest obstacle just now is a lack of raw converter other than LR. I had planned to use Affinity but the poor shadow and highlight recovery make it impossible. I'll see what Capture One come out with next spring before making a final decision!!
I have this exact setup but with the 1T. And i love it. I bought it so i wouldn't have to buy a laptop. When i photo edit a lot of times i write and do other things in different places at the same time and this set up works so seamlessly for me to do all those things. Its pretty awesome. I still may get new macbook but id treat it more like a stationary desktop. Im not a video editor so the small setups work for me at this time. 😎👍🏾

Returning and reflecting on this video, I recall watching it when you first published it, but it appearing on my feed this morning.
I started using the iPadPro around the same time, as a travel item, prior to which my I used my MacBookPro full on for all my photo editing. I’d say our use case was very similar, the difference being I opted for the 11 inch, as it fitted in the sleeve pocket of my backpack.
Move forward two years, and the iPadPro has become my primary editing device, with around 75% of my work being edited and produced on it. I think the key for me is that I am was not looking to replace the MacBookPro, but bring, efficiency and further mobility to how I work.
That advantage is only really gained by the reduced dimensions of the 11 inch over my MacBookPro, which for me, tips the balance in favour of the iPadPro

Honesty is always appreciated; macbooks for creators, ipads for content consumers, some people will manage to make it work for their needs and adapt.
This is the best, most comprehensive, most perfectly calibrated review of the iPad as a photo editing device that I have yet to see. It perfectly mirrors my own experience. The real deal killer for me when it comes to the iPad as a laptop replacement for photography is the fact that Lightroom can’t work off of external drives. I suspect that this is Adobe’s attempt to extort its users into paying for cloud storage but if you’re traveling and don’t have a good Internet connection - or any internet connection then it’s just not feasible.

This wasn’t really a negative way to end the video just a realistic logical thought threw. For me personally the iPad Pro is my only device, except my iPhone, so this method of editing works great for me….Excellent video👍🏻

My question stems from an photo editor's point of view: May one *benefit* from Apple's Mini-LED display for the M1 iPad Pro 12.9' during post-processing (in Photoshop Lightroom)? Or will one only get to witness the "glory" brightness of 1000 nits and beyond *only* when *viewing* HDR content? I've been told that Apple's new XDR projects at around 500/ 600 nits during normal usage. Do you notice any micro-contrast detail improvements when editing on the 12.9' mini-LED vs the normal 11'? Please advise, and thank you in advance.

I was really itching on buying the new M1 Pro/Max in the form of a laptop AND I've been lusting over getting a tablet to edit/take notes on. But... When I'm really honest with myself, I don't really spend that much time needing to edit while traveling. I find that when I'm traveling for about 10 days or so, I just put editing off until I'm back. Same with commutes or work breaks. Usually there's too much distraction around for me to edit and I end up doing something else like listening to music or watching TH-cam. The heart of my editing pleasure lies with a nice desktop system with quality peripherals. So no laptop/tablet for me for the coming future. But if they bring out the new M1's as a Macbook Mini, that is very likely going to become my first Apple purchase ever.
I use a iMac Pro 32gb with 2 6tb external drives which mirror so both re back up for each other, but have a iPad Pro 1tb for when on the move or at hotels. Never bought a MacBook as like to watch movies when in hotels or camping in the van so the iPad with the 5G is perfect. Good choice though mate but everyone’s budget is different and everyone has there own preferences, I would never go back to a windows laptop or pc.
I like your review. I initially thought you were praising the Ipad but in the end you're being really honest which very valuable as most reviews focus on specs to make a choice. But there's obviously more to it and you pointed it out very well with UX and costs (that's a big one).
Now, you chose the 12.9 which is huge and close to your laptop. I guess the 11" might actually more appropriate for portability and so on if completed by a decent's size laptop.
But the cost of accessories... 😬

I’m a medical student and although the 12.9 M1 iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard/Pencil set up may seem overkill, it’s so flexible. I note take on it, I watch videos, it doubles as a laptop, I literally do everything on it. I have a M1 MacBook Air as well for the times where I have to have macOS, which is becoming fewer and farther between these days. I do agree Apple needs to make major improvements to iPadOS.
What will you recment a macbook m1 or ipad11 inch for medical student day to day use which can do some photography editing and entertainment.

A MacBook Air M1 is more than adequate for all this. Its cheaper with proper file management and can run full fat Lightroom CC & Photoshop for focus stacks/blends which is a bit of a nightmare on an iPad.
It can also plug into a monitor properly.
I love using my iPad Pro for photography, but it's just has too many big loopholes to allow me to use it 100%.
1. USB -C connectivity to devices is hit or miss. Sometimes my camera is detected, sometimes not. Hard drives rarely show up. I dont know what gives, but it is extremely unreliable....
2. You cannot add any importing workflow (renaming files, adding copyright, etc.). This is a HUGE negative that is more on Lightroom Mobile, than on the iPad but it forces me to stick with Lightroom Classic.
3. Importing takes forever......
Really good review, just small correction, Ipad Pro 11" 2018, and 2020 version are coming with USB 3.1 Gen 2 which is UHS-II card speed. It is not Thunderbolt, but UHS-II is still only 20 mins download for 256GB sd card.

They provide a slightly textured surface to make writing and drawing easier. Any opinion on if this product would make photo editing more difficult? Thanks, Fred B.
As a hobbyist, I decided to get the M1 iPad Air for my “travel computer” versus my 4 year old Intel 16 MacBook Pro which is serving as a desktop computer right now. As a slightly older fellow, I am looking at reducing the weight I’m going to carry on our forthcoming monthly trip to Italy and a cruise. While I do take a lot of pictures, I have 512 MB on the iPad, 2TB of iCloud storage and a 2TB SanDisk SSD for the trip. My thoughts are I can use those resources to keep and edit my travel photos in Lightroom and link them to my desktop Lightroom so that on my return, I can have my files already to use. Regardless, I’ll always have the SD cards and SanDisk backup of every file plus the iCloud storage.
this sounds exactly like what I need, I'm also looking for a travel alternative that won't be too heavy. Maybe the iPad Pro is too much. I was also looking into the iPad Air; this looks like a solid plan. I do not use iCloud storage though... would SanDisk SSD be enough is what I wonder. I do take a LOT of photos.
Could you please let me know how long it actually takes to import the photos onto Lightroom with the faster port? I’ve yet to find a video which times it on the M1. Thanks so much.
For the iPad how long does it take for it to get really hot what’s the usage like compared to the ipadpro 13’ ?

Can I add presets into lightroom cc from the ipad without having a desktop or laptop? Like if I purchase one of your presets can I instal itl straight away or I'll need to own a computer.

I got a love/hate relationship w/ my iPad 12.9 pro 3rd gen. It’s a true workhorse, everyday for everything whether its work or downtime. I watch alot of sports and I can hear som much better than the tv (hard of hearing/nearly deaf) but I do a lot of personal photo archiving since I have 5 kids. It’s incredibly slow to load the pics. Im debating wether I should get iMac 24 & lose my personal downtime stuff but the business end would drastically improve UNLESS the 6th gen iPad Pro 12.9 should make up for the faster picture loading times from the external ssd? What should I do?

personally the Magic Keyboard completely breaks the strength of the iPad weight and bulk as much as a MacBook! on a photo trip I only take my iPad and stylus, that's all! I do all my touch-ups with a stylus and all my text by voice! at home I have a magnetic iPad stand with an Apple track pad and an Apple keyboard that never moves. I sold my big tower and I do everything with the iPad I don't process thousands of landscape photos so it works very well for me but I know wedding photographers who work very well with iPad it's true that sorting photos on your iPad sofa in hand is awesome 😁
Nice Video about Lightroom on Ipad Pro. I like my iPad Pro, but i will still editing my photos on my desktop mac. My workflow is not compatible with iPadOS or say it better: i have still real problems wo work productive with the ipad IOs or perhaps i am too old.

I was looking into this but then read the m1 performs basically the same as the non m1 chip, the A12z. Apparently it’s bc the apps aren’t even optimized for the m1 so the a12z is apparently just as good, kinda surprised me .
Do you have experience with the other iPads chips, like the a12Z? Or newer versions of non m chip iPads ?
Any alternatives other than light room on the iPad ? I’d rather not dive back into Adobe’s suite.
I would love to see the speed difference of exporting between the 2 devices! What 14” version do you have hopefully the base version for the comparisons! I’ve got the 1tb iPad Pro and the cost is very expensive when compared to the base 14” pro but i really don’t think i could live without the Apple Pencil for Lightroom anymore 😂 looking forward to the comparison video 👌
Hmmmm I edit from time to time and the 2020 iPad Air with the Apple Pencil works just great for me. It’s way smaller and cheaper, and I bought it primarily because I have to read tons of technical PDFs and I hate doing that on my laptop. Being able to work with Lightroom was a nice bonus for me.
I agree with the operating system critique tho. It does feel like a giant iPhone sometimes hahaha
I have a question, I recently purchased ipad 5th gen , and I have lightroom installed. I import all raw photos on lightroom and start editing the photos. Once exported back to my iphone , the colors look different from ipad , desaturated and less contrasty. The iphone is contrasted and saturated and the colors are awesome unlike my ipad. Any suggestions

Great vid. You said that the iPad doesn't allow for editing from external harddrives and therefore it's best to get more internal storage. Would that be the same for the MacBook Air/pro???
Nope, you can plug in an external drive on a Macbook and edit from there. You can even have your C1 or Lightroom catalogs/sessions on there
I have a problem every time I want to copy the photo or video from an ssd card, only 4 or 5gb would freeze my ipad and it is very annoying

nah don't bother. in hindsight I wish I kept by 2020 11 inch if I knew these new MacBooks will be so good...

I've got a 2017 iMac with 32GB of RAM but I'm finding it is slowing down since I upgraded my camera to a GFX100. My 16" MBP is slightly better (it only has 16GB of RAM but I think the SSD is faster than my iMac).
so I'm looking at maybe upgrading to a 14 or 16" M1 MBP. the iPad could be an interesting option though. how do you find the cloud version of LR over the desktop, and can the display be colour calibrated (or does it not need to be)?

Cloud version of LR is like a whole different program. Your catalog is in the cloud and it's not local based at all, so it feels like a companion to your iMac (classic version). I find it Only good for retouch, no power user goodies. Photoshop = 99% useless garbage on iPad. -- Although the Lightroom for iPad is on of the better done ports; still, the iPad versions of desktop apps are like different programs its so bad.
I have both and wish I just went for better notch book 16" because that screen is better than iPads even.
-- When you move to even an m1 laptop (no promax) its speed will blow you away. Very happy.

Cool video. Do you experience some sudden screen dimming due to overheating, when editing photos? I do experience it a lot on iPad Pro 2020 12.9. Maybe it is solved on the M1 device?

Apple Pencil all the way. I found through buying and selling that the best accessories for iPad and made by apple. As for backup check video in description

nah but I did edit the Sony A7R4 files and it was a breeze. obvs different but still chunky
Does LR mobile still take forever to sync settings across multiple photos on the M1? That and the file management system are probably my biggest gripes at this point on an otherwise fantastic machine.
obviously depends on the internet connection. At home or on 5G it’s ok… but if you’re travelling it can become a pain

1 caveat. Buy more memory than your storage device. I use 64 gig cards and at times can load 1000s…other times no because of file sizes. Time wise,it’s aggravating to be time pressed and having to load x amount at a time. The screen is adequate as well as apps like Snapseed etc.
Hi Roman. If the 14” MacBook was not around and in your possession, do you think you would still have come to the same conclusion ?
I think if it was an intel based Mac, I would still stick with the iPad. Equally if I wasn't making TH-cam videos and had a job and just did photos for fun on weekends I would keep the iPad.
Do you thing the battery 🔋 will burn out a little faster on the new iPad Pro 12.9 2021 one since it is much better screen then the other iPads 🤷♂️
I think they have a physically bigger battery to compensate. it does drain faster when on the magic keyboard tho

@@slimhim no, I have been looking for a solution since @roman fox posted his video a few months ago. It does not come up for me. I have un-installed Affinity Photo but can’t get it to show up as an option in “Open in”. I love Affinity Photo and would love to use in my workflow, but alas, seems elusive for me at least.

I had the iPad Pro, but i prefer mine MacBook, because of the pro app’s to use.
How do you find editing images on a significantly smaller screen?
well unlike a 16 in MacBook this screen is naturally closer to your face… so its not too bad at all. Going back to a 16 does feel nice but you are also further away. over all it’s not an issue for me however if you’re used to a large monitor you might struggle
What screen brightness do you use to keep consistent photo brightness
I set it on auto usually but turn off True Tone.

I was waiting for you to mention how crippled the photo editing apps are. Photoshop isn’t useful, filters aren’t there, can’t edit saved groups, no actions, can’t clone stamp. Lightroom is great for light photo editing but that’s it. It’s crippled too. Can’t color correct the iPad, no display is perfect, and the iPads are certainly not with greys being blue and whites having obvious tints, but colorimeters are a must and they’re not supported. This isn’t worth the price if you’re buying as a photo editor. Much better off with a full suite, powerful laptop…Dell XPS are like half the price with bigger, higher resolution screens…also iPad isn’t even the biggest tablet anymore S8 Ultra much more impressive. iPad is great if you use it for other things first, photography second…oh and you can’t share its screen with a PC…other tablets (not Apple) can.
IMO, Apple should have took OSX and made it bolder/touch friendly for the iPad Pro. Job done, I hate the crippled iOS that's why why my 1st Gen iPad Pro 12.9 is mainly a consuming device with a little concept sketching on top. You just can't get away from that Phone feeling, which is not a pro experience. I am happy with my 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro but I like the pencil drawing features of the iPad. Maybe I should just get a 16" pen display to plug in to the 14" MBP and stop moaning!
So you bought the 1tb iPad but from what I can see in this video, had no money left over for a desk, or a chair! ;)

It would be ideal if we’d be able to run Windows or MacOS on it in virtual machine just in case you need some of those apps on the go. The M1 iPad is so powerful but it’s not using the hardware at all.
I hesitated keeping my iPad when I got it for the main reason being when I take photos and plug in my Sd card to the iPad. In Lightroom for some reason it only shows photos that are in the original folder they are put in when I take the pictures. I usually would move the photos to separate folders when organizing my library. If i do this I have no way to access the photos through the “camera device” option when uploading. I can do it through files but its very clunky and harder to see the images. Seems like a simple fix that has yet to happen. Otherwise I love working on my iPad it doesnt feel tedious like it does on my IMac. Being able to alternate between touch screen and the magic keyboard makes it much easier and my wrist doesn’t lock up.
Has it been fixed ?

After close to a year of trying to create a proper workflow, I can say with a resounding NO to the iPad for ingest/backup/digital darkroom. iOS is crippled - a walled off garden within a walled off garden. I've been shooting FT since 1987 and have always used a laptop/ultrabook on the Windows side of things. A year ago I drank the koolaid that the iPad Pro was the essential device for any type of out in the field/traveling photographer work. I could not get it to work as smoothly/efficiently as using a compact laptop. A colleague of mine who happens to be a 2 time pulitzer winning photojournalist and documentary photographer came to the same conclusion. As of today I am selling my 11" 1TB storage/16GB RAM iPad Pro for keyboard and stylus. I took delivery of a fully spec'd MacBook Air today and within minutes everything I had known for digital asset management/editing in the field, etc was exactly as it was suppose to be. And since there is no Photo Mechanic for iOS (and their developers have flatly said they won't either) the convoluted workarounds and pathetic file management within iOS finery became the straw that broke the camels back. Anyone who is serious about their device managing their daily shoots while traveling should bypass the iPad Pro and go straight to the MacBook Air since it's the same parts but in a proper laptop with dual thunderbolt ports. Now I can ingest more than one card through Photo Mechanic 6 and then choose Lightroom or Capture One (the latter is my preferred software) for proper cataloging, keywords, etc. Using a stylus is over rated IMO and I have given it a full year to get comfortable with it. Give me a trackpad and/or mouse.
Thanks for your helpful reply! I would like to ask if you ever feel the m1 air is lacking in power (I do big imports, 2000-5000 20mp Raw files at once). Secondly, do you still feel you need photo mechanic (since the m1 chip is much faster in rendering in optimized software)? And thirdly, did you try Photo mechanic plus, why not use that for cataloguing (keeps track/preview even when disk isn't connected, or is that the same as building 1:1 previews in Lightroom?)?... Hope ain't to many questions I'm throwing at you!
Great video...I have SUCH a love/hate relationship with Apple...I am typing this on a Windows laptop and editing on the IPAD while listening...and VERY poor. I HATE icloud and not having Bridge on Apple...honestly...really?

Anybody here using the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite for Editing and can give me a feedback for? Im starting out and just want a low priced Tablet for editing instead of my Pc... especially for when i'm not at Home. Thanks :)
Im so close to buying this but with the lack of software power I still hold back.

Apple hobbled the ‘pro’ aspect of the iPad in favour of their laptops. That’s left a lot of people disappointed.
I wish the iPad was the answer. Ergonomically its awesome - the pencil makes the experience fantastic… BUT… Running an iPad Air M1, the display continuously dims to reduce heat which is a pain when you’re editing a photo. So as fantastic as the IPad is, it just doesn’t work as a photo editing solution. Buy a laptop.
I thought I was the only one! I came from windows and went for iPad 12.9 m1. Now, I can't get the notch book because funds are tied up in it. iPadOS is a joke:( - I did get the base model though 14 and I pair it with iPad for dual screen on the go (both mini led so its great there) but yea, should have gone Wacom. So now I return laptop for Mac mini and deal with it :(
If I were to do it over, id go 16 inch 32gb 24gpu max chip and either base 300 iPad or a Wacom (no screen).
it’s annoying because the ipad is amazing at what it does… however equally narrow in what it can do lol
Macbook pro all day long for me ... so much more versatile
The iPad works amazingly the box came a little dirty, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA no plastic wrap, but the box was sealed and had everything else in the box along with the wrapping, the iPad itself is gorgeous, I got the yellow 64g game storage is good for me along with Socials and school stuff. No scratches or marks came with the charger and box fast speed, and if you are buying a pen get the 1st gen don’t make the mistake I did !!
I love the iPad and it’s a big part of my life. That said,,,,,photo editing…..Mac.
yeah it’s a personal preference kinda thing… i just wish they combined them into one device haha
@@snapsbyfox You know, I get a lot of people feel that way and I really do understand. I don’t share that sentiment. From my perspective they are both perfect in their own way. I like the fact that they are very different experiences and I use them both so differently. In so many ways the iPad is better, but for photo editing not so much. My wish is they don’t try to duplicate what’s on the Mac, just make what’s on the iPad better.
Agreed. I have a iPad 2020 1TB 12.9 and I start using my mini m1 much more... iPadOS15 is annoying... Don't waste your money on iPad, buy a MacBook M1
