    A clear thorough manual is one of the most important parts of any new machine. I recently purchased a new shop metal lathe (won’t toss the brand under the bus because the machine is stunningly full featured and incredible fit and finish. For the many, many, many, many hard won dollars spent I expected a manual... No Manual! I contacted customer service who explained that I could go online and download the manual and print it myself! I LOVE this lathe, but for the price of a luxury SUV I thought they could throw in a 600 page manual...so I spent the day printing and reloading paper, cutting a leather binding then binding and gold leaf imprinting my shiny new full color manual....

    I used to work at a place that had the parts washer in a loading dock off the main shop and in the winter it got COLD. It had a heater that kept it above 40 but man a parts washer that keeps the fluid warm is a huge plus in that situation, it keeps the microbes and my hands happy.

    Me: I wonder how he’s going to indicate in a square plate. 🧐
    Me a few minutes later: Oh, well that makes sense. So that how you put a round hole in a square peg.
    I just discovered this channel a few weeks ago. Needless to say I enjoy the content immensely! I have been binge watching past episodes like crazy to catch up.
    I am a mechanical engineer by education and I repair and troubleshoot pumps at my job. I spend a TON of hours in machine shops all over the midwest and southeast. I enjoy watching the machinists work. I try to learn how and why they take the steps they do. Which is a large reason I am enjoying your channel. I love the variety of projects. I am a car nut so the automotive related ones I especially like.
    Thanks for letting us into your shop!

    OMG at 40.50 you show a company from Greenfield Massachusetts. I am from Greenfield MA and I have two brothers still living in Greenfield. It's been at least 25 years since I have been there. Right now it's very hot and humid there, but winter will soon arrive with a vengeance. I remember GTD, where my father in law worked for many years. Lots of new business springing up in Greenfield. However I think I'll tough it out here in California, earthquake country. So many of the old companies in that area used the Greenfield River to power their plants and of course pollute the river. Thanks for sharing Adam,.....Ken Marina, California ;-) .

    A 4" drill bit is easy to make. Just a narrow piece of tool stock, shaped like a parting tool, except for one side convex and the other side concave. Think of it as an adjustable one-tooth hole saw. With such a tool, you'll only be cutting away the periphery, leaving you with just a small amount (depending on your settings) to cut away in a finishing pass, and a nice little circle of metal that you can save for something else.

    Barndominions are so popular in Texas for several reasons. First off, they are cheap. I built mine for less than 40k total. It started off as 40 x 50 metal building on a 5" slab - a little thicker than normal since I wanted to be able to put a post lift anywhere. Built in floor drains, etc. I then built a two bedroom apartment in the back half. This style of building is possible since most of Texas does not have zoning restrictions. Outside of cities most don't have code inspections outside of county septic and water wells. So lots of folks build them themselves like I did.

    Adam why don’t you take some longer strips of brass shim stock and form it around the jaws so they will not fall off when you open the chuck-jaws

    • @Ms.Nightshade
      @Ms.Nightshade 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam seldom uses soft jaws, so having a soft metal like brass or copper bent around the jaws would require bending them back until they’re straight enough to be removed, which can take time away from making a part and risk eventually snapping the soft jaws, which isn’t fun.

    • @vilsiran

    Instead of leaving two sides wider so you can clamp it, how about just leaving it square and thinning an area for a hold down clamp to grab or for a stud to get bolted down? That way you could still put it in a vice in either orientation, or bolt it down in either orientation.

  • @tsmartin
    @tsmartin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    RE: Fixture Plate. Another way to cut the hole would be to use a hole saw to rough it out and finish bore to size. A plus to doing that is instead of turning all that metal into chips you would have a sizable slug that could be used in a future project.

  • @jacobwhittaker9749

    I've got a smart washer and I love it, but if you leave it turned on it wont heat and it also stops heating if the fluid gets low

  • @ryanlukens9280
    @ryanlukens9280 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That’s an Abom size bit at 9:05. On a side note, if you plan to create more of these, you might want to drill and bore the hole then clean up the sides. Probably be quicker to line up the sides off a known center than find the center after you finish the edges. I’m not a machinist like you are, but it seems logical to me.

    Hey Adam. Another great video thank you! I was just wondering about something. You used shim when chucking this plate in the 4 jaw chuck around the edges to protect the finish. What about the face of that plate? Could you have wrapped that shim 90 degrees around the edge of that part to protect the face of that part and indicated it in too? just curious if it would have indicated to zero or not. It should have if material is the same thickness. I always enjoy your channel keep these awesome videos coming!!

    Wonder if a hour meter would come in handy for your limited use of the parts washer. I would imagine a busy shop would use it 15-20 hours a week. Just change it out at a pre selected hour usage. I would imagine you have plenty of folks that could provide some input on how often per week they actually use it.
