Renault 21 Turbo 4x4 Superproduction Race Car in action at Goodwood Festival of Speed!

- A couple of months ago I shared with you a video about a R21 Europa Car, a machine built by Renault in order to be race in their own one-make series: the Europa Cup. Now I'm sharing with you a brief video about the ultimate Renault 21 ever built: the Superproduction/SuperTourisme.
The project was launched in late 1987 and its race debut was in March 1988. The car was based on the street-legal 4WD Renault 21 (called 'Quadra') but all its technical characteristics were new. The Superproduction saw an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinders engine producing 430 hp that could reach up to 290 km/h. Other innovations included a blow-off valve derived from F1 and a 2.35m-long carbon fibre driveshaft taken from the Espace Quadra and wind tunnel tests resulted in highly effective solutions for the car's aerodynamics. A meticulous study of all the vehicle's technical specifications made the 2-litre 4x4 R21 the best car of the 1988 season.
Over the course of the 1988 season, six of the 10 calendar races were won, with victories shared between Ragnotti and stablemate Jean-Louis Bousquet. Those victories saw Ragnotti claim the French Championship drivers’ title in the Superproduction class. New rules for the 1989 Championship that limited boost pressure to 2 bars were unfavourable for the Renault 21’s turbo engine. As a result, the team made a number of modifications to the car, resulting in an entirely different model to the previous year’s, with a longitudinal engine configuration closer to that of the original production car. Despite a handicap of 128 kg and transmission issues, the car took 11 poles from 14 races and came second in the championship.

Funnily enough, "Group A and IMSA GTO's crazy lovechild" is EXACTLY how one would describe the French Superproduction series of the late 80's! BMWs, Audis, a few 190E Mercs, Porsches, Peugeot 505s, and even some bonkers FWD Citroens beating the stuffing out of each other with progressively more insane amounts of turbo boost and RPM.
If you haven't already in the past three years, I _highly_ recommend looking further into that series. There's more than a few vids on YT, and they make for utterly insane viewing.

To those saying that Renault should sell something like this, Renault built the 21 Turbo Quadra as the range topping model and barely anyone bought it at the time. It was much more expensive compared to a bog standard one and still more expensive than the FWD 21 Turbo.

my brother had a renault 21 quadra, it kept eating 2nd gear syncro rings, couldnt find the parts to get it back on the road, sold it for spares.

I know not everyone can have a super duper Turbo 4x4 Superproduction Race Car but if a car company can make a car this epic in that period, why can't they raise the price of your everday car a few hundred, they spend 34p more for each unit in production and lo and behold the Renault 21 might have been something exciting rather than living off it's "car of the year" bollox and using that to hoodwink people into buying substandard shite
