So interesting to see Luke Wilson go to bat for Polly Platt, attempting multiple times to get Peter to acknowledge her contribution to the film. His discomfort is palpable, re-explaining stories to assert himself in the stewardship of key moments and decisions (like location for one). This movie would 100% not be the great movie it is without Polly Platt.
Polly said she discovered Cybill on the magazine cover while Polly was shopping in a grocery store. She said could anyone envision Peter shopping for family groceries in a store.
Superb- and all are wonderful to see all of these wonderful people. Bogdanovich's complement to Timothy Bottoms- that listening in a scene is the most difficult part of acting, and that he had listened beautifully- which is so true- the nuance and reality of "Sonny" listening is the heart of this great film. thank you for sharing this.
As a straight man, I can see what a good looking man Timothy Bottoms is and maturing so well. Thought he was just fantastic in the LPS, but regret he just did not get the same breaks for further big success as others who have half his talent. A nice man indeed.
I just watched it for the first time and I really liked Timothy Bottoms performance. He should've gotten an Oscar nomination for it. But I didn't think the overall movie was that great.
I read where he left during rehearsal for the play Fifth of July. I would guess he got blackballed for leaving a play - he was the star - without telling anyone.
She was also great as an original cast member on the earliest episodes of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. She was very "understated" with her presence, and only lasted half-of-a-season, I believe. Watching her on it now, you understand how brilliant she was. Her stage work had included the original cast of Hello Dolly (with Carol Channing) playing opposite Charles Nelson Reilly, as well as the lead (five years earlier) in Little Mary Sunshine Off-Broadway.
As a mature student at uni I took my young friend to see the film. I'd never heard of it and as it was B&W I thought it was one I had missed of the hundreds watched before TV. I was baffled because, as a big movie fan, I thought I knew them all. My comment to my friend was "They knew how to make them back then." I mentioned the experience to another young friend and he explained it was a new movie. I've seen it several times since and can't get over the realism of the characters. and so, so sensitive a portrayal of human frailty.
After 50 years, this film stands the test of time. I watched it again today. Intense, original, a masterpiece. The Last Picture Show is a 1971 American coming-of-age drama film directed and co-written by Peter Bogdanovich, adapted from the semi-autobiographical 1966 novel The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurtry. The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Ellen Burstyn, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman, and Cybill Shepherd. Set in a small town in north Texas from November 1951 to October 1952, it is a story of two high-school seniors and long-time friends, Sonny Crawford (Bottoms) and Duane Jackson (Bridges). As just an average guy I can say that this film was perfect. The men displayed truth in their characters. I am shocked that more people have not considered this a major study of American society and human nature. The conflict between two best friends over a girl is classic and happens all the time. Especially among equals in looks and charisma.
A lot of carpers here. Personally, I felt tremendously lucky to have been able to attend this event in person - one of the highlights of my 60+ years of film-going experiences. To those pissing and moaning about Bogdanovich dropping names - get over it. Bogandovich is (was) one of the last living links to Old Hollywood and the Studio System. He has interviewed and filmed Orson Welles (his close friend), Howard Hawks, John Ford, George Cukor, Allan Dwan, Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Chuck Jones, Fritz Lang, Joseph H. Lewis, Sidney Lumet, Leo McCarey, Otto Preminger, Don Siegel, Josef von Sternberg, Frank Tashlin, Edgar G. Ulmer, and Raoul Walsh. If anyone has a right to drop a few names, it's Bogdanovich. If you think he hogged the mic too much, it was pretty clear that all those attending were there to honor him. Plus he helmed the whole damn motion picture, so it makes sense he'd do most of the talking. And while some may feel he's effete and pretentious, I find him to be a terrific raconteur - charming, funny, insightful, and extremely knowledgable. He's earned his stripes - any fastidiousness be damned. And yes - I do think that The Last Picture Show was one of the greatest movies America has ever made - damn near perfect. My only carp - yeah, where were Ellen Burstyn and Jeff Bridges?! His friendships and associations with folks like Welles, Ford, Hawkes, etc are priceless. He and Scorsese are to be praised for their grasp of film history. Well done. Wonderful cast, film, director, cinematography and music, all of it and Cloris the heart wrenched- what a beautifully shot scene with that music going on against all her Tragedy, it was so deserving of the. Oscar...for all
There is a poignant quality to this reunion: Bogdanovich never fully realized his potential as a director, although he had two commercial and critical successes in Paper Moon, with Ryan O'Neal and his daughter Tatum, and What's Up Doc, the farce with Streisand and O'Neal. His subsequent films with Cybill Shepherd, Daisy Miller and At Long Last Love, almost wrecked the careers of the actress and her director. His later work has never re-captured the innovation and freshness of Picture Show. Eileen Brennan had a success with Private Benjamin, with Goldie Hawn, and she was almost killed in a pedestrian knockdown accident, and never fully recovered. Leachman went on to success with Mel Brooks in Young Frankenstein, and in The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
The Last Picture Show has been one of my favorite films ever since its 1971 debut. There wasn't a weak performance in the film, even among the minor characters and extras (remember Jimmy Sue? Miss Mosey at the "picture show"?). Of the still-living performers, I'd have loved to see Ellen Burstyn, Clu Gulager, and even Randy Quaid. I have studied this film, and even taught it in my film classes, so I'd like to add a few bits of information that may not be known by some of you: Many think the film is an homage to the 50's, but I read that Bogdanovich was actually paying homage to the way movies used to me made, e.g. the film of Howard Hawks ("Red River") and John Ford. The film's aesthetic exploited mise-en-scene (think Citizen Kane) as opposed to an editing aesthetic (think Midnight Cowboy). Bogdanovich shot the film in black and white, another homage to the films of yore. Even the binary choice of good vs bad hearkens to the values of the past (Sam the Lion's integrity, Sonny Crawford's remorse) as opposed to the modern values of extramarital affairs (Lois Farrow, Ruth Popper) The soundtrack is interesting too. All of the music played in the film is played on an electronic device -- juke box, record player, etc. There is no ambient music accompanying the scenes. Also, the soundtrack which features quite a few Hank Williams tunes, was not released for years as it was held up in court by the Hank Wiliams estate, I believe. The Director's cut of the film, to this day, befuddles me. There are mostly minor changes, but to me, they detracted from the film. For example, Bogdanovich cut all of the male nudity. Why? I've never understood how it made the movie better, instead it's so obvious that something has been left out. I could quibble about other changes in the Director's cut but suffice it to say the original film was much better, perhaps because I'd studied it scene by scene. If you choose to go back and revisit the film, I strongly recommend NOT seeing the Director's cut. The original cut resonates far more truthfully.

While I adore Jeff the star or for me the focus of the movie is Tim’s character it begins and ends with him, that’s a clue he’s the focus I wish that they included interviews with Timothy (also I think he deserved an Oscar nom for the movie but that’s just my opinion)
Right on. Timothy really gets pissed when Peter doesn't give much credit to his wife Polly Platt. Polly made this movie while Pete was busy with Cybill. She really suffered making this, there's a podcast all about her called You Must Remember This, Episode 170. Check it out. It's truly shocking stuff. A lot of this is almost verbatim to the hour long doc in the Criterion version 'Remembering The Last Picture Show'. And there you get Jeff Bridges and Ellen Burstyn as well. I believe that was filmed 2009, and all look pretty good. Especially Ellen Brennan. Sad to see how fast she aged in the 3 or 4 years to doing this. An everlasting movie that will live on because of the legends.
Eileen had a couple bouts of cancer; 1990 breast then died in 2013 of bladder cancer. She never fully recovered from being hit by a passing car after lunching with Goldie Hawn( 1982)@ 50 yrs old. She had massive injuries. She also became addicted to painkillers due to the accident injuries and took 3 yrs off to recover and overcome her addiction. Massively talented lady.
Tim Bottoms said during the making of "Texasville" that he fell in love with Cybil on LPS , and clearly was still in love when they shot that film in 1990.
The cattle tank scene was not the first film 'accident!' Howard Hawks was making a scene with Wayne in a bright sun and the clouds rolled over in Red River (1947). Another "accident", this one for Hawks, and possibly the most serious performance Wayne ever gave up to that time. The camera captured the cloud covering then uncovering the sun, or vice-versa, and Peter Bogdonavich knew the history of film in and out. In the discussion above it was an 'accident', but they Bogdonavich quotes Orson Welles to the effect that everything thats magic in pictures are accidents.
I believe it was a total oversight. Wilson's no well-trained emcee. I suspect he just slipped up. People make mistakes - to error is human, to forgive divine. (Sorry for the cliche.)
I think it was all just the rush of the moment and probably a focused concern on helping her to the stage. An oversight without a doubt. As I mentioned earlier, I was in the audience that night, and the whole thing was a bit of a heady experience for everyone - especially those on stage. But one thing I failed to mention earlier is that if I recall correctly, I believe Wilson did cite who would be appearing that evening - only he did that just before this video starts. So it wasn't like Brennan was totally unidentified.

Peter left his wife for Cybill. He & Polly had two young daughters & Polly was the set designer. She did Cybill’s makeup while Cybill and Peter were having their affair.
Wilson was born and raised in Dallas and has strong ties to regional Texas filmmakers. For instance, he has starred in several movies by Houston-native director Wes Anderson (as has his brother Owen who also co-wrote some of them). It makes sense that he would have a lot of admiration for LPS since it was filmed so close to his home and its artistry being such an influence to the movie industry. I'm pretty sure he's a fan of it as well.
@@ronbo11 I thought he did a fine job. Possibly slightly in awe of the panel, which shows good character on his part. And, he actually let the guests talk. So often, the commentator is the one doing all the talking, and constantly interrupting the guest(s). He just let the conversation flow.
Peter Bogdanovich admittedly helmed an UNBELIEVABLY brilliant movie with The Last Picture Show --- in my opinion, NONE of his other films were as great, though. But he's just so FATALLY PRETENTIOUS (ugh!).
I don't agree. I don't find him pretentious, at all. He's a knowledgeable man, with a history of befriending the mavericks of film. I enjoy hearing him speak about Welles, Hawkes, Ford, Cary Grant, et al. All from first hand accounts. And how they shaped and inspired him, as a filmmaker. He seemed gracious and complimentary towards his actors, on this panel. Also, see his 1979 film, Saint Jack. It is first rate.

Cloris Leachman a bore?! Personally, I find Bogdanovich to be a terrific storyteller. And Shepherd's genuflecting to Bogdanovich was a most sincere and surprising warm touch.

Glad I discovered this film, book was excellent. Peter did an astonishing job adapting it.

lm really surprised that there has not been alot of mention of Clu Culager and his character. the pool table scene was really hot.
He is a great actor, always. I think the reason he probably wasn't there is because there was a falling out between him and Bogdanovich that lasted for many, many years. They are not friends, to say the least.

While I adore Jeff the star or for me the focus of the movie is Tim’s character it begins and ends with him, that’s a clue he’s the focus I wish that they included interviews with Timothy (also I think he deserved an Oscar nom for the movie but that’s just my opinion)
Right on. Timothy really gets pissed when Peter doesn't give much credit to his wife Polly Platt. Polly made this movie while Pete was busy with Cybill. She really suffered making this, there's a podcast all about her called You Must Remember This, Episode 170. Check it out. It's truly shocking stuff. Bogdanovich dined out for decades on a very short career
A lot of this is almost verbatim to the hour long doc in the Criterion version 'Remembering The Last Picture Show'. And there you get Jeff Bridges and Ellen Burstyn as well. I believe that was filmed 2009, and all look pretty good. Especially Ellen Brennan. Sad to see how fast she aged in the 3 or 4 years to doing this. An everlasting movie that will live on because of the legends.
Eileen had a couple bouts of cancer; 1990 breast then died in 2013 of bladder cancer. She never fully recovered from being hit by a passing car after lunching with Goldie Hawn( 1982)@ 50 yrs old. She had massive injuries. She also became addicted to painkillers due to the accident injuries and took 3 yrs off to recover and overcome her addiction. Massively talented lady.

Hey Peter, What was with the 70 Chevy Impala on the left side of the screen parked when the kids drove by in the 50 Ford Shoebox convertible? Blooper?
The cattle tank scene was not the first film 'accident!' Howard Hawks was making a scene with Wayne in a bright sun and the clouds rolled over in Red River (1947). Another "accident", this one for Hawks, and possibly the most serious performance Wayne ever gave up to that time. The camera captured the cloud covering then uncovering the sun, or vice-versa, and Peter Bogdonavich knew the history of film in and out. In the discussion above it was an 'accident', but they Bogdonavich quotes Orson Welles to the effect that everything thats magic in pictures are accidents.

I think it was all just the rush of the moment and probably a focused concern on helping her to the stage. An oversight without a doubt. As I mentioned earlier, I was in the audience that night, and the whole thing was a bit of a heady experience for everyone - especially those on stage.
But one thing I failed to mention earlier is that if I recall correctly, I believe Wilson did cite who would be appearing that evening - only he did that just before this video starts. So it wasn't like Brennan was totally unidentified.
Why did Jeff bridges and Ellen burstyn not appear as well?
My first guess would be scheduling conflicts.
They had a stage, so they must have had a backstage. Use it.

Wilson was born and raised in Dallas and has strong ties to regional Texas filmmakers. For instance, he has starred in several movies by Houston-native director Wes Anderson (as has his brother Owen who also co-wrote some of them). It makes sense that he would have a lot of admiration for LPS since it was filmed so close to his home and its artistry being such an influence to the movie industry. I'm pretty sure he's a fan of it as well.
@@ronbo11 I thought he did a fine job. Possibly slightly in awe of the panel, which shows good character on his part. And, he actually let the guests talk. So often, the commentator is the one doing all the talking, and constantly interrupting the guest(s). He just let the conversation flow.
It was perhaps because Polly Platt was instrumental in getting himself, his brother and Wes Anderson their first big break in Boyle Rocket too..

Peter Bogdanovich admittedly helmed an UNBELIEVABLY brilliant movie with The Last Picture Show --- in my opinion, NONE of his other films were as great, though. But he's just so FATALLY PRETENTIOUS (ugh!).

I don't agree. I don't find him pretentious, at all. He's a knowledgeable man, with a history of befriending the mavericks of film. I enjoy hearing him speak about Welles, Hawkes, Ford, Cary Grant, et al. All from first hand accounts. And how they shaped and inspired him, as a filmmaker. He seemed gracious and complimentary towards his actors, on this panel.
Also, see his 1979 film, Saint Jack. It is first rate.

Dave Glo Because he wanted to be an actor, not a star. He couldn't stomach the Hollywood PR machine that went with being in high profile movies. So he said to hell with it.
Commercial success or not, following TLPS, he has continued to act steadily.
Cloris Leachman a bore?! Personally, I find Bogdanovich to be a terrific storyteller. And Shepherd's genuflecting to Bogdanovich was a most sincere and surprising warm touch.

I believe he walked out during rehearsal for a play Fifth of July. Didn’t tell anyone & he was the star. He may have been blackballed. I believe Tim was wounded by Jeff’s success and his lack of it (working mostly in B-movies).

As a straight man, I can see what a good looking man Timothy Bottoms is and maturing so well. Thought he was just fantastic in the LPS, but regret he just did not get the same breaks for further big success as others who have half his talent. A nice man indeed.
