  • In this episode of the "I Bought A Farm" series, we bring back our good friend and habitat specialist Jeff Sturgis to discuss all things whitetail. Jeff has so much knowledge when it comes to whitetail habitat, visiting over a thousand different properties in his career. We often ask ourselves what should we plant? When is the right time to plant it? What's the best food source for my property? What will keep deer living on my our farm all year long? As we head into the spring, Jeff gives us some insight on how we should prepare our property for whitetail success. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

    Been watching jeff for years and finally put in 2 water holes on our place 3 years ago with high hopes. Cameras over them every year and very, very minimal use for us on those water holes.

    Hunting in SE Michigan, where baiting is illegal, yet every gas station in the areas of heavy hunting sell bags of corn and sugar beets. The bags stacked up by the pumps like it was pre-ban. You know every bag sold is being dumped in the woods somewhere.

    Isn't clover a mostly summer food and didn't he say he plants clover the most yet also said you don't want summer foods because it creates a problem with to many does. Isn't that conflicting?

    • @DiversifyYourself
      @DiversifyYourself 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No clover is not a summer food. It’s a spring and fall food. Espescially in hotter climates like the south. It slows growth and kinda stunts when it gets scorching hot.

    Jeremy, who helped lead your layout approach for your Ohio place? I’m nearby and just don’t feel Jeff’s (or Dons, or most for that matter) approach works as well in the hills where there is no ag, let alone stinking kernel anomalies all over. Jared’s area of the state has that typical mixed ag format. That most consultants and layout savvy folks can work better with.

    • @HUNTRPOD
      @HUNTRPOD  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      lol me. I used to do that for a living, so I’m pretty confident in laying it out. That said I like getting another opinion every once in awhile

      @@HUNTRPODI get where you are coming from and just listening to you can tell you are very knowledgeable and your success is proof of that. Why Sturgis, his concepts seem gimmicky and more based on a different strategy than what you have on your Ohio farm. Wouldn't someone like Don Higgins, Mark Luster that specializes in Midwestern ag layouts be better? On a different note thanks for taking the time to air your podcast, I love the content and have watched every episode.

    Not advising anyone to do it but I’ve seen people put their bean header on the combine and “harvest” the corn… basically bush hogs it and they technically didn’t break the law .. per the game warden lol

    I'm not buying what Stugis is selling. If I'm in the market for a land setup specialist I'm going with Don Higgins or Mark Luster. I've worked with Mark personally and he keeps things simple but effective.

      Mark keeps it simple without gimmicks. He will show you exactly how the deer are going to move on your property under certain wind directions and thermals using the terrain. He will show you the best spots for your plots and bedding cover and how to hunt it effectively. I've killed a handful of mature bucks over the years and not impressed easily but Mark Luster was an exception. Depending on the size of your property he will suggest to have fewer plots, say you have 50-100 acres he would probably have you eliminate all plots except for one. A large grain plot with a connecting smaller green plot strategically placed for best access and wind conditions.

      @@brianreynolds8732so to follow up with the first question you were asked, what does Higgins or Luster offer that Sturgis doesn’t? What is Sturgis’ “gimmick” that you’re referring to?

    • @brianreynolds8732
      @brianreynolds8732 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kwikgto389 Mark isn't going to have you putting in water holes and vine scrapes all over the place, etc. Lee lakowsky and Bobby Kendall also have the same approach. Keep it simple have 1 or 2 larger plots with a small section of that plot dedicated to a green food source and have bedding adjacent to the green plot. He will have you put in 1 or 2 mock scrapes at strategic locations. He won't be trying to sell you seeds and other stuff. Personally Sturgis feels like a used car salesman.
