  • In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, the guys sit down and talk about some upcoming off-season projects that can help improve their hunting properties and attract more deer for the next season. Habitat management is such a key factor in the pursuit of killing a mature buck. Our goal is to manipulate the properties we hunt to give us better access to bigger, better deer. Whether it be planting food plots, creating access points, or just getting boots on the ground, we want to create the best environment that will set us up for a successful hunting season. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's episode as we discuss all things land management.

    The upside and downside of these conversations is how vastly different everyone's hunting area is. I think if you want the best practices for your individual property is to do what you guys are doing. Listen to others. Try it. Then try something else the next year. No one knows the areas like you guys do. I think all the guys mentioned are smart guys with great general knowledge. But a 5 mile difference could mean rye works great in one spot and doesn't do shit in the other. Love hearing how you guys are willing to try new things after trying what others have told you. Makes it feel like you guys aren't drinking the cool aid just because.

      @@HUNTRPOD He has talked some about doing that and adding food within those large sections of switch. The reason he uses it mainly as screening is because without food in it the deer shouldn’t be bedding in it.

    Sturgis over Harper. Sturgis = Habitat Jesus. About to order my Sturgis switchgrass, doing 2.5 acres with lines and pockets also having 35 acres timbered off our property right now, can’t wait to see how much regrowth we get just in this one summer! Good pod boys!

      @@HUNTRPOD I think the native browse in there would be ok, it wouldnt be worth the eradication of it. Im thinking more like intended food source such as clover. Seen a lot of guys not take movement into consideration on their properties over the years. I have a buddy who has what should be a big buck gold mine. The way he has it setup its like you all discussed theres no access they dont watch, see, smell you enter. Ive never in all the hours I spent on stand at his house saw a buck that would meet his self imposed antler restrictions.

    If you’re planning on brassica plots, spray in the spring, keep sprayed all summer, spray right before hand then disk in fall and plant.

    Look back 10-15 years. Nobody was recommending using corn in food plots. The QDMA and others were pushing all of these other crops and green forages but almost always advised against using corn so I never used it. A few years ago I tried corn and now its the staple of my food plot program. Deer start utilizing it as soon as it starts to dry down which in WNY where I am is mid October. Sturgis claims they don't hit it until later than that but that is not true in my experience. I have a redneck bale blind i put right in the field adjacent to a mowed patch of corn and its an absolutely deadly tactic. As for the field management goes why not do both? Ask Jeremy if he would be so kind and let you use his drill to put some switch in patches into the old field. Then you have switch grass structure and browse. I bet the deer would bed right on the edges between switch and old field. It would be cheaper than planting all to switch and fire can still be used as a management tool. Great stuff guys keep it coming! Oh BTW I looked for you at GAOS Monday and Tuesday but didn't see you there i was even wearing my HUNTR shirt.

    • @hunterkoehler9445
      @hunterkoehler9445 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, it’s the best of both worlds. Switch stays standing and provides an edge/cover that stays standing and old field habitat creates the brows. Also I’ve had the same experience, corn is king!
