- Newport Sea Fishing in Winter. Join me as I have my first proper session of the year at one of my favourite UK Shore Fishing marks. Due to illness and bad weather, I wasn't able to get out for weeks and boy did I need this one! A cold and frosty evening but enjoyable all the same. With the Bristol Channel Cod Fishing season in full swing, there was always that chance of a good fish.

Thank you Nik, I appreciate that, nice of you to say. Yes I guess I'm just a normal angler who enjoys spending a few hours next to the water, that's what it's all about for me. By nature I'm a deep thinker, hence the deep chats ha! Yeah that's it, I got no interest in promoting tackle etc, it wouldn't suit me and it wouldn't suit the channel. New sub from me bud good vid, lost my mum 17 years ago she was 52.. you never get over it you just learn to live with it.. I'm 50 now and still now and then it hits me and wish I could talk to her... things like this and other lifes problems is where fishing helps me.. relaxes my brain

Don't ever stop mate , I love watching your vids , it's not all about the light or camera angles it's about the personality of the guy that's doing it , you do a great job, I've just come back to fishing at the age of 68 , only been 3 times and blanked every time , I now live in France but am originally from Pontypool, only do river fishing and am hoping one day to actually catch a fish but like you say it's just being out there and enjoying it.

I use to love going to the fishing shows in auditoriums back in the early 70s. Big screen fishing show way before cable and the internet.

Good to see you back and brought a tear to my eye watching. I lost my father last August, I grew up fishing with him and so did my son . Miss him loads. I'm just waiting on a lure maker in Ireland, to make me a rainbow trout lure ( without hooks). I'll be placing some of dad's ashes inside and he will be clipped to our tackle bag so he can still come out with us.

Love watching your videos. Really hit a spot today as I used to go fishing with my uncle who passed away in 1987. Did not take it up again until thirty years later when I retired. You were at one of my two very local marks, the other Cardiff foreshore. Have had mixed results at both and have not fished for a while as I am fair weather and daylight only. I was also laid low by the flu recently. Glad you beat the blank. I have caught plenty of codling that size in February and March. All congers at St Brides the rest of the year, but I have caught a couple of Bass and a Dogfish. Have caught a lot more Dogfish at the Foreshore as well as my first Thornback last summer. Keep the videos coming and all the best.

Ah yes me too, good old aunt Fanny and Uncle Bob, they were always there for the family 😂. I wouldn't block you Matt, I'd be scared that you'd pelt pork pies at my windows! I think you're right, that probably is Dad telling me to change tactics, I should listen to him a bit more often, might get more fish then! The fishing locally is hard work at the moment, think I will need to venture further west now that the 'lull' period is about to kick in. Don't ever stop talking about your dad, I know that feeling very well, when i was younger he tuck me fishing and as he got older I tuck him, he is always fishing with me , I blame him for my blanks 🤣🤣

Good to see you back Gareth. Very poignant you talking about your Dad (lost my Father almost 2 years ago now). I think being able to talk openly about loss and the emotion this generates, be that laughter or tears, helps us process our grief but more importantly I think, secures those memories and bonds. That is such a blessing!

Only just found you on the Tube, but cut my teeth fishing with my Dad on the Olway, Pontypool AA water right outside the pub, lobbing a big worm into some of those pools, you never knew what you where going to get, Trout, Dab, Eel, Chub, Dace, Minnow, had some great trout up to 2.5 lbs stuffed full of minnows. Still have some of his kit, glass fibre rod, Mitchell 300 reel, like you miss the old chap. Just keep doing what you are doing, local to me and I guess lots of other Taffs.
Ah yes, the Olway Brook, what a place to fish. I probably bumped into you as I was always out there fishing in my younger days. I bet you have some great memories of you fishing there with your Dad and those memories will last forever. I appreciate that you miss him, not easy is it. Hi Gareth, another nice video buddy. A venue you might like to try this time of year is up by the old severn bridge. Locally known as "Loop road". Easy access and fishing off a grass bank. Over the years I've had some cracking Cod and good congers at this venue. As with most of the area, you never know what you'll catch with just a short cast out.

Great to see you out again, love the videos. Back in the mid 1960s my late younger brother went fishing near Bristol docks. He caught a fish that he couldn’t identify. It caused quite a bit of discussion among nearby anglers who came to the conclusion that he had caught a herring. Although it looked similar to a herring I was sure that it wasn’t. Remember, this was before the days of the internet. I borrowed a book from the library and we were able to identify the fish as a member of the herring family called a Twaite shad, a sea fish which briefly enters fresh water to spawn. This is part of the fascination of fishing, you never know what might turn up
Thanks for the comment Ron, I enjoyed reading it. Wow, a Twaite Shad, now they are rare and not many people catch them nowadays. I bet your brother was chuffed, great catch! A few turn up in the River Usk during April and May and back in the day, you'd see them chasing flies/insects from just below the surface, such a fast fish. Jeeze your spot on with the emotion of losing family and the memories of fishing Mark's is crazy isn't it , just being in the same spots fishing the same waters brings us closer to those people.

Your presentation and content is unpretentious & honest….please keep those videos coming!…….you mentioned John Wilson in your video….that must have been surreal…..I hope you washed your hands before you shook hands with him! This week in work I have been replacing a fence with a colleague in Caerphilly. A gentleman has walked past each morning and said ‘good morning’. While I was at builders merchants one morning my colleague had a chat to him. The gentleman told him that he was going fishing to which my colleague told him of my passion for fishing. The gentleman in question went on to tell him that he was Mr Brandon Jones…..holder of the uk shore record cod caught Barry 1966 44lb. I didn’t see him again, we finished the job so I will never know!

Hi Gareth. Happy belated New year too you. Another great video mate,great content. I've been struggling a bit with the old mental health, and I also had the flu at Christmas, lasted 2- 3 weeks so it amplified my emotions a bit. However I manged to get out last Thursday to Penarth ( Ranny bay) had a few whiting but just pins, and a couple of small Codling about a pound a piece, however a chap fishing not far from me had a lovely perfectly marked codling of just over 4 pounds, nice fish.
I can't talk for anyone else but myself, but I can agree with people's opinions, and I agree that your videos are special, you have a very calming way about you that helps me rember the world isn't the dark place I sometimes think it is, and you inspire me to get out fishing. I didn't grow up the conventional way, I do have a brother I'm close with who lives in Cornwall, and is a keen shore fisherman like me, but I have lost close friends,so relate to your comments about your dad.
I can only imagine how hard it is to keep doing these videos, but if you can, keep em coming, no pressure Lol.
Put my brother on to you, and he now calls me to say you've put another video up, he too suffers with mental health issues, and finds your videos calming.
You come across as a really nice guy, who just loves his fishing no bluff or bravado needed.

Happy New Year Rich, glad you've recovered from the flu now. Good that you had a few fish down at the Ranny last Thursday, well done. I was going to film down there during the last week of December but then I got ill. I remember you saying before that you struggle a little at times with your mental health and I'm pleased that you find the videos calming and relaxing, nice that your brother enjoys them too, hopefully plenty more to come with a bit of luck. The marks I fish are not as productive as they once were and so I put more of an emphasis on the watch and any fish are a bonus. Never easy is it when we lose people and that's why I like to reminisce a lot as it keeps those memories alive, makes me feel a little better. It's a tough old life, very challenging at times and this is why we love fishing so much as it provides us with that escape. Cheers for the continued support bud, have a good week! 👍👍

As i said to you before, my Dad died 20 years ago and i still miss fishing and spending quality time with him. Brilliant video,I went fishing three yrs ago And I was having a bad time with my reel and for some reason I called it a night ,when I got home I found my father had collapsed in the kitchen and died of the injury’s a few months later ,and I often wonder if I hadn’t of gone fishing that night maybe he would of been alright,after coming across your videos on you tube and hearing your memories of your father gave me the courage to get back out there,I know my father would never want me to stop fishing and would not of blamed me on his fall,so cheers for your videos they do cheer me up ,I’ve just watched this one after my team has been dumped out of the FA cup,so it’s cheered me up ,keep up the good work buddy 😊

You're absolutely right though, your father would never have wanted you to stop fishing and he wouldn't have blamed you for what happened. As a result of our excessive alcohol consumption. Mr Birkin and I now both have terrible flatulence! This has been since we were very, very drunk at the New Year's fireworks display in the village, where I am afraid that one girl was very badly burned and the vicar was bitten by a poisonous monkey!

Absoloutly brilliant video again Gareth. Saved the blank mate. Yeah lost my mom and dad 15yrs ago. Dad got me into fishing on the Warwickshire avon when I was a kid on our hols in a caravan. Remember I had a bamboo cane and a float and my first ever fish was a gudgeon. Thanks dad for starting me up 🙏 like you said Gareth great the old days. Keep up the brilliant videos mate 👍

Great to see out again, I lost my dad 3 years ago and my mother 4 months ago. Even at 63 it no easier!! Our routine was fish Friday using fish I’d caught. Now it’s all stopped it took the edge off fishing. However I’m going to carry on the tradition with my adult children and grandchildren etc. I can’t complain as both my parents lived into their late eighties.

Hi Gareth, brilliant video has always, you talking about your dad I lost my dad in 2005 brings back memories for me when we used to fish in the old swansea docks, wooden jetty late 60's early 70's for mullet and swansea west pier good old times loved them days,great channel Gareth keep doing these videos fishing and the nature videos both brilliant keep up the good work.

The fishing is difficult with the weather of late.. Did my first session last weekend at monknash first since November. Going to try Ogmore deeps in the morning so fingers crossed.

I think the annual lull period is starting to kick in now, fishing seems hard work at the moment, although I reckon you'll get something at at Ogmore tomorrow, best of luck. Good that you're getting a couple of sessions in after a little break, hope all is well. Yeah the channel seems to have grown fairly quickly, the marks I fish are nothing what they used to be and therefore I don't catch that many fish anymore but people seem to like the scenery shots, music etc, I just try and be myself really and hopefully it comes across ok. Thanks for the supporting words, it's nice to think that the videos are encouraging people to get out there. I'll keep going for now and hopefully I can produce many more videos, I'm going to find some new marks this year too. I had a pleasure session down at the Transporter Bridge this morning as I had loads of ragworm left. Didn't have a bite for three hours and then on the ebb, 2 bites and 2 fish, you couldn't make it up...a small Whiting and a chunk of a Flounder, wish I filmed it but there we are. From early spring you won't be able to fish there for approximately 18 months as NRW are upgrading the existing flood defence bund and it will be closed off to the public. I think all your subscribers are like me and absolutely look forward to you posting another vid. It does get easier with time losing a parent. I lost my dad in 1988 when I was 27 and my mam in 2013. At the time, you feel like you just can't move past it but you do. Time is a healer. Sorry you have been unwell but great to have you back. Big congrats on 4k subs. Well deserved!!
It certainly has been cold David, the past two weeks have been freezing, it's only just starting to thaw out now, getting slightly milder. 37 degrees, wow...now that is warm and about 35 degrees warmer than it is here at the moment ha! Yes you're right there, time certainly is a great healer. It must have been tricky for you losing your dad when you were 27, that is young, appreciate it wouldn't have been easy. I'm sure you have lots of great memories of both your mam and dad, it's these memories which make the days a little easier. Thank you, I'm surprised how quickly the channel has grown, given the marks I fish are nothing like what they were in terms of fish numbers. I'll keep going for now and hopefully plenty more to come, I'm still striving for one a week and I think I can do it. Hope you're well, enjoy the heat, enjoy the weekend! 👍👍
@@riversidewithme It is similar here re fish numbers. Once you could go to any beach along the coastline and get a variety of species. Not like that anymore. My daughter and I went fishing last Saturday morning and only managed to hook 3 very small Tommy Ruffs (Australian Herring) between us. Such a shame. As you have said before, we all know why!! @@davidwilliams6525 Yes, we do know why! I can't believe that it still goes on and there's no sign of it stopping, it's upsetting. Nice that you go fishing with your daughter, good memories being created. I've not heard of that fish but I shall look it up 👍
