  • "The Orange Maid of Sligo" is a traditional Irish song dating from the nineteenth century. It is associated with Irish Unionism, although it is not overtly political in tone
    Lyrics:
On Ben Bulben's high and lofty heights
When evening sun was setting bright
It cast a shower of golden light
    Across the Bay of Sligo
A tiny craft with glancing oars
And flowing sails, the wind before
It drove the tiny craft ashore
To this, the Bay of Sligo
And at the bow there sat a girl
With rosey cheeks and flaxen curls
Her tender beauty was like a pearl
    The Orange maid of Sligo
And glancing o'er the vessel's side
She saw upon the water's glide
    An orange lily's golden pride
    Upon the Bay of Sligo
Make haste, make haste and save that flower
I prize it more than any other
No traitor must have it in his power
    Around the Bay of Sligo"
An Orange youth then with a bow,
Did pluck that flower and with a vow
Bestowed it on the gentle brow
Of the orange maid of Sligo
She soon became his bonny bride
And oft he thought at evening tide
    About that lily's golden pride
    Upon the Bay of Sligo
So come all true blues and fill your glass
No finer toast could ever pass
So here's unto that bonny lass
    The Orange Maid of Sligo

Could you do some songs on the Irish Confederacy period?

Will do that. Take recommendations as long as they aren't sectarian or bigoted. You won't see Celtic Symphony (although I do like the wolfe tones) and Belfast Brigade. Give me a list of songs and I'll upload

@JacktheFilmFanatic-vu1nk See the snippy haha gotta get one over tot other community behaviour that's mainly a northern thing, I think the biggest example is the whole flags thing, I have never seen any place in the world where they paint the flag of the curbs, hang it in bunting through streets and colour scheme everywhere. That's the most foreign thing about northern Ireland to me, the gotta one up.

@JacktheFilmFanatic-vu1nk yeah that's the thing about northern nationalists that is a clear difference from the south, the flags everywhere although I kinda get why the northern nationalists do it and you probably won't agree but it is an undeniable fact that the northern state was a bigot state when founded. I think James Craig was a massive bigot and I wish Carson ran northern Ireland. Carson said, Do not treat the Catholic like you thought the Catholic would treat us in home rule and Craig went the opposite way

I understand that the song is not sectarian per se, but honestly I think any song that is pro Orange Order or that glorifies King William III is almost as bad. Also, who does this song refer to when it talks of saving the flower from the traitor at 1:38?

    • @FionanUaMurchadha
      @FionanUaMurchadha  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Traitor doesn't mean Catholic, though? Why does it matter anyway it'd a 19th century song and nationalists control sligo. And as Orange Order, I think it CAN be sectarian, but do you get offended by William III? Man didn't hate catholics. He wanted to give Catholics our rights back. The Protestants of Ireland, who held parliament, opposed it. There are sectarian songs from unionists such as no pope of Rome but on the inverse you've also got Belfast brigade which says Orangemen may live in dread. That's why I like the Nationalist songs like A Nation Once Again or god save Ireland, they can slander England that's fine

@@FionanUaMurchadha No, I'm not offended by William III, but I think he's viewed as a sectarian icon by many. Who are they referring to as traitors then? - and yeah I agree, a nation once again and God save Ireland are both great songs, possibly the best nationalist ones.

@FionanOMurchadha It was Parliament of England actually I believe. The Irish Parliament was in a mess during the williamite wars
I'd also challenge, if No pope of Rome is sectarian are anti-monarchy songs?
No pope of Rome doesn't mean Roman Catholics. Its entirely directed at the church.

You like Henry Grattan don't you?
He was a supporter of William of Orange. Do you consider him inherently bad for that?
Part of the "evil Orange horde", to quote another comment of yours?
Additionally, just because someone or something is viewed as sectarian, does not automatically make it actually sectarian.
      People's perceptions can be wrong.
If unionists view the Republic as sectarian, does that make it sectarian?
Or do the rules change when it's something you personally support versus something you don't?
And also, you take issue with the song referring to "traitors", which obviously means Irish nationalists.
Just like how in the nationalist song The Rising of the Moon, the line "death to every foe and traitor" is referring to unionists.
If referring to nationalists as traitors in a unionist song makes that song inherently bad, then would that not also apply to any nationalist song which refers to unionists as traitors?
And heck, this one didn't wish death onto those it called traitors, unlike The Rising of the Moon.
Is this another one of those things where the rules are different depending on whether it's the side you support doing it or not?
(Just to point out, I don't have an issue with nationalist or unionist songs that refer to the opposite sides as traitors. I just have an issue with your double standards.)
