Not an Irish song, but might aswell be for a certain generation. "Nessun dorma" (English: "Let no one sleep") is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot (text by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni) and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. Although "Nessun dorma" had long been a staple of operatic recitals, Luciano Pavarotti popularised the piece beyond the opera ...

"Macushla" is the title of an Irish song that was copyrighted in 1910, with music by Dermot Macmurrough (Harold R. White) and lyrics by Josephine V. Rowe. The title is a transliteration of the Irish mo chuisle, meaning "my pulse" as used in the phrase a chuisle mo chroí, which means "pulse of my heart", and thus mo chuisle has come to mean "darling" or "sweetheart". This version was preformed b...

"Banana Republic" is a song by the Boomtown Rats. The 'banana republic' which the song describes is actually a deliberately scathing portrait of the Irish Republic, the band's country of origin, and was written in response to the band being banned from performing there. This song of Seán O'Farrell's pike against the Brown Bess Musket is certainly stirring and well played and sung. Indeed, "full bitter was their fate." Decades ago I was at Vinegar Hill outside of Enniscorthy, Ireland and had related to me the tragedy that occurred there when pikes went against muskets and untrained Irishmen went against perhaps the world's best disciplined and drilled and superbly armed professional soldiers. Even to this day, the ideals of the United Irishmen of 1798 haven't been entirely realized, but Ireland has certainly come a long, long way.

Agreed, neither side is without it's share of violence against the other. Britain colonised Ireland, but Ireland too colonised Britain (displacement of native Picts in Scotland and Gael settlements in Wales). Catholics were massacred (Drogheda), but so too were protestants (Portadown). Contrary to the victim rhetoric adopted in Ireland today, there is no definitively good or bad side here, especially not when one side slanders the other with acts they themselves have committed. It is entirely dependant on who you ask. Neither Irish independence nor Irish unionism are more absurd an idea than the other. As a monarchist I'm naturally preferential toward unionism, as it's really the only reasonable way for Ireland to have a monarchy, but with an Irish parliament.

@@mattymate I agree but I also have another motivator so many of our ancestors died to support this union historically speaking the majority of our ancestors supported this union until after the potato famine but the problem was what was britian meant to do we look at it very selfishly at the time they didn't have the knowledge it was a disease most of the people thought it was god punishing us for something and britian has a shortage of food itself plus add alot of other factors it was not logical for britian to send food as they thought god was punishing us and well from their eyes helping us could have got god to punish them aswell. Also the british empirr collasped a while after irish independence because truthfully I believe we need eachother like a family withou them you don't get very fair like look at us today we are nothing to be proud of neither britian or ireland are great, glorious or mighty we are the laughing stock of the modern world a joke once our peoples stood against napoleon now we lay down like broken old men struggling to decide what we want we are the brand new sick men of europe
