This happened too late for me to include it in the video, but workers at Bethesda have unionized! This makes them the first studio within Xbox to form a union. I hope to see more of this very soon! www.ign.com/articles/bethesda-game-studios-microsoft-game-studios

The majority of gamers play repeatedly what they are good at: Fortnite, COD and sports games. These games also sell consoles, while, sadly, this title is viewed as a short time distraction. This is why imaginative studios are easily dumped, for they don't make the money and aren't guaranteed to make the big bucks.

I'm honestly glad that this kind of behaviour is finally being called out and people shift their attention towards indie studios more. This stuff has been going on for years, especially at Microsoft. I remember when they bought up Rare to pull their fans to the Xbox360 where they released one Banjo Game that floped so hard the IP was never heard of again and immediately workers got axed. Absolutely dispicable.

What all men with power go through…corruption. Eventually…inevitabley…you become a tyrant blinded by greed. Only the strongest of wills are able to handle the pressure as CEOs with creativity are severely lacking nowadays. One example: Pilestedt of Arrowhead games was once the CEO, he was a great one at that, however he had made a decision to step down from that role, he felt he wasn’t fit and wanted too be more hands on the game rather than to be more business. Immediately he already became one of the best CEOs even if he had stepped down right after. A good CEO listens to their clients and employee’s needs and basic commen sense. And most importantly…creativity. Most gaming CEOs either never had it or lost it. All because of corporate greed and power.

This really is a special game, and the way Tango got shut down proves exactly what Hi-Fi Rush was trying to say with it's narrative. Art and money obsessed corporations do not mix together well, as the value of the artists behind the work is always undervalued. This will always be one of my all time favorite games, and Xbox rewarding the developers by firing all of them made me lose the small amount of respect I had left for Xbox. You nailed it with this video

Nice to see more creators talking about this. I'm really disappointed with the state of the games industry, especially seeing how many studios were actively punished for making some of their greatest works in 2023.
I think the hidden song in Hi-Fi Rush, "Making Things is Hard", puts a perfect bow on this situation. These guys put their heart and soul into a game that we all recognized the effort for, only to watch the studio crash and burn because Microsoft thoroughly misunderstood the success that was right in front of them.

All huge corporations trying to exploit their workers and customers for the sake of maximizing share holder profits.

We need strong unions, regulations and end corruption in a broader scale.

What it's with Dishonored 3? Arkane Austin didn't made 1 and 2 they helped arkane lyon, the studio that actually made the Dishonored games. Prey 2017 is the only full game they made and 75% of the people who made that game left the studio before redfall was even announced, arkane Austin was long dead inside, the remaining 30% of the original studio were moved to other studios from Microsoft

you still dont know the reason why tango and arkhane shut down
i'll give you a hint for arkane "70% of the original team at arkane left the studio by the time redfall launched" in other words the Talent left the studio and xbox learned a lesson from that event which is (people make games, not studios) it was arkhane only in name at that point and Phil tried to explain it in corprate speak by saying "they were no longer viable" which confused a ton of people and just upset alot more
and as for tango the hint i'll give is that check when the creators of "the evil within and hifi rush" left to go make thier own independent studio (they didnt leave alone check how many people left with them)
it's easy to say xbox bad but trust me the real full story here is super interesting and might make your blood boil hotter and xbox could have saved these studios but in truth they were on thier way out thanks to zenimax and bethesda and xbox arrived with a hands off appraoch which just kept things rolling in a terrible direction.
you'll understand why they said they need more games like hifi rush after shutting down the studio.

None of them left because of Microsoft, Microsoft just made a bad investment because they can in as things were already falling apart but decided they would be hands off and trust the process and by the time they decided to become hands on it was too late the talent was gone.

Needless to say, another Kohana banger - I absolutely wholeheartedly agree that the way forward is to prove that there is a market for fully completed, battlepassless, artistic games. These days I feel so much less excitement for new AAA games compared to indie games, with a few exceptions - and usually that is because indies aren't implementing all of these horrible practices which require you to pump more and more money into them to get the best experience out of the game.
The point you made about sunk cost fallacy really made something click in my brain though, I first played league of legends over a decade ago and kept playing it very regularly (and sometimes for far, far too long), putting bits of money into skins for champions I liked and whatnot. During those 10 years though, I think I had quite a few spells where I didn't really feel too much joy from playing the game and I was honestly partly playing it because I'd already spent so much time (and money, to a much lesser degree) on it and thought all of that would be a waste to throw away, so I continued to put more and more hours into it. It eventually took this year's season, which changed so much about the game in ways I didn't really enjoy very much, along with my life just getting way too busy to play games like that, for me to stop playing it.

  • @ziokalco

Most gaming issues would fix if all gamers stopped buying micro transactions or season passes.

I'm glad that lately we are seeing a lot more people playing and cherishing indie games, you could say it was always there but less then 10 years ago the big influencers, gamers and games media(IGN and etc) barely gave a shit unless it was a hit that they never saw coming, but with more hits through the years, now everybody got an eye on the indies.
However, my biggest fear is that companies will try to use that to their advantage or will try to trick people to lose their perception of what indie is, it may sound dumb, but last year on the TGA from Geoff's was a big red flag for me, with Dave the Diver getting nominated, there was controversy thank god not everyone is that dumb to notice, but that show is voted by "gaming journalists and influencers", and after that i saw alot of people, inclunding Geoff, talking stuff like "what is indie? is it a felling? Kojima is indie", like, WTF? and people start parroting this, with stuff like FROMSOFTWARE is indie, and Larian which was the talk of the town last year, is insane.
This could cause problems way down the line because people are dumb, there may not be a concensus of what a "indie game" is, i get that, there is too many situations, but people know what a indie game is, and is not a fucking feeling or style like indie rock for fucks sake.

Man this video went way further than expected.
    Well said though.
I am old enough to have seen the whole evolution of video game industry, and i really dislike what it became. As you say, it's more about money than creativity, and we can thank the indie devs to have some good variety.
DLCs ruined a lot too. Rare case i allow them are for fighting games i love, because it makes them live longer, but at what cost...
Worst case being when they remove content to put it in pre-order, deluxe version, in-game shop.
Another big topic would be free games and gacha games.

Fintlock:Siege of dawn is better game. Than hi-fi rush. But hate mob maffia voting down. Is very hard make inbesils gamers anything good making.

“Xbox doesn’t care about art” is just a untrue fan boyish statement lol the video was doing so good til that point. They still make niche non live service games like Hellblade, Psychonauts and Avowed stop the cap

Pretty sure he wasn't talking about people that are in the artistic space and moreso to higher-ups, business men, sales teams, just people that work more with business, finances, legalities, and sales. It's like saying Nintendo doesn't care about modding, everyone automatically knows they're talking about Nintendo's lawyers.

Yeah, this video is filled with over the top nonsense, as though they mysteriously closed Tango because the anti-corporate message offended Microsoft. 😂 Ever seen the Fallout TV show?
