MATCHBOX Restoration No.K7 Refuse Truck 1967

  • I managed to take two broken refuse trucks and make one that works. The other bits left over have been put away as spare parts. Today I learnt that the metals used by Matchbox seem to have varying tolerance to heat. Attempting to weld a repair, something which I have done before, resulted in the metal turning liquid and basically dissapearing! I had to learn a new method involving the use of solder with a lower melting point. I will have to showcase this new method in another video as I ended up not filming it because I was not sure that it would work.

This matchbox model represents the Shelvoke & Drewry T series Pakamatic refuse collector from the 1960's. The crew cab actually seats 7, 3 in the front and 4 in the rear which is a full width bench seat. I build & cutomise waste Industry equipment models. I've restored a few of these models and modified a couple with the high cab roof that most of these variants had (to allow crew to stand up in the cab) The low roof version didn't actually have the two vent grills either side of the radiator shown on the model but the design was obviously taken from the other prototype. Nice restoration Marty, Love the improvised tool for peening the body pivot, keep them coming! Oh yeah and the rear portion is the Hopper/tailgate assembly, and the round dome above the radiator grill in the centre of the windscreen is where you filled the coolant. On the real vehicles these were Chrome. The roundel in the centre of the radiator bears the letters SD, these were white on a red background. the spar down the centre of the radiator was body coloured. (Obviously matchbox simply did the easiest paintjob to apply)

If you havent tried baking soda for blasting your parts, I highly recommend you do so. It wont remove details, but it will remove paint and leave a nice surface for painting. We use it at work for removing epoxy from delicate printing parts when they get worn out.

Marty, the next time you need to use the Muggy Weld and torch, try using an small alligator clamp on the part, so it acts as a heat sink to draw away the heat, in the hopes that it won't melt your part. You'll still have sufficient heat to melt the Muggy Weld and join the two parts. I use alligator clamps, when I'm soldering capacitors to potentiometers on my guitars and it works beautifully, preventing the capacitors from being damaged.

Rick, Do you ever use ebay? There are a lot of older toys that could be restored there and many of them are inexpensive. Or garage sales or flea markets, I've seen a whole box of old toys that are beat up for a few dollars. Keep working on whatever you've got and remember it doesn't need to be perfect, if you like it and enjoy the process that's all that matters.

Glass beads and garnet can be a little too abrasive for delicate work. We always used crushed walnut shells on our molds as they were very exacting tolerances and an aggressive blast media would alter the dimensions.

Quite agree with the somewhat loose fixing method Matchbox originally used on the back collector back in the day.
Will drill out the left hand pin like you did and then opt for easy axles 2 or 3mm tube running through the inside and secure on the outside.
Not original I know but it will look good and work just fine.
    All the best Marty

Hey Marty. The reason the interior is made that way is because it is molded (moulded) in a two part mold (mould). If they did it with the dash already folded over, the would not be able to properly separate the mo(u)ld halves. The plastic would grab the mo(u)ld like a claw under the dash portion. This way, you just pop the interior right out, fold it, and easy peasy pop it in. Done. Saves money and time by still being a single piece, vice multiple with would mean more resources and time to make and assemble.

When I was a kid, this was exactly the sort of dustcart (Shelvoke & Drewery, or 'S&D') that rolled up on Monday morning to empty our bins. Three blokes - a driver and two dustmen - I think there are no seats in the back, as the blokes would be in and out of the truck all the time, and possibly only sat whilst driving to and from the depot - who, unlike nowadays, would come into the back yard, pick up the bins, empty them, and then put them back where they came from. Nowadays, I've often had to walk up the street, and find my wheelie bin from amongst a clump of other ones.
I don't know what the back of the truck is called, although there is a possibility, that like a normal tipper or dump truck, the load area is known, here in the UK at least, as the 'Buck'.
And your finished model? A thing of beauty. Nice one.

Good job, it takes nerves of steel to straighten bent cast zinc you have to have a sense of when to stop before it breaks. I had one of those trucks too. In the united states we have a 2 part epoxy called JB weld that has metal particles in it and dries rock hard, other brands call it liquid steel. I wonder if it would be a use to you, I haved fixed broken die cast zinc toy trains with it. It is good for filling pits in metal fixing cracks etc. Im sure there is something similar available in Australia. The other solution is when in doubt have a large parts box of spares! Gives you a reason to keep on collecting junk matchboxes.

I had that refuge truck. I wouldn't have used the 2 to make 1 model. I'd have restored both as they are old and hours of pleasure being played with they both have different stories to tell.

That really looks fabulous. I think the little side saddle tank is maybe a hydraulic tank with a battery box on the other side. Good effort on the welding. Do they sell J.B. Weld over there? It is a two part putty that when mixed makes an excellent metal working product. And that was quite rude of Kevin, amazing how quick he picked up the arrogance of city workers.

I use industrial quartz,it does a thorough removal of paint or rust. Used mine for brass tanks from automotive radiators.
