  • This is Fear & Hunger theory I've been thinking about for a while now. I guess this is my first proper video. I do intend to make many more in the near future.
    I've been meaning to post a longer video for a bit, i've been working on this big big project- but "longer" ended up being an euphemism. It has become WAY too long for my own good so it will take some time. I think I will upload some smaller ones in the meantime.

    Le'garde is a really interesting character to me. He has his fair share of haters due to worsening the lives of many of the characters (Like Ragnvaldr and D'arce) but he's arguably one of the characters with the most to talk about. He is also the one character with presence in both of the games, which makes him and his story stand out.
    As it is with this series, there's a lot to speculate but not many answers. Things like Cahara and D'arce's fate, there's so much to talk about. I would be interested in making more videos talking about these and other topics in the future for sure. And a video discussing him in further detail beyond this theory discussion here.
    ❗I INTEND TO KEEP MAKING MORE VIDEOS!❗

      I still think Le'Garde is the unsung hero of the first games.
      His involvment with everyone, even Enki had them enter the Dungeons. He set the chess board and set the pieces.
      And to me, he did not do it for self-centered reasons at that but for all of humanity.
      Never played Termina however.

      If we assume his soul is missing, we could make a parallel to the Fateless One from Kingdoms of Amalur. Unlike the rest of the souls that seem to be passed on, he could be outside the "fabric of fate", yada yada. Alternatively, considering D'arce brings him back from the dead as a form of necromancy, you could assume the ritual caused the soul to go missing, and him having no soul to harvest even if he survives the dungeon might just be an oversight, I can totally see this being the case considering people are overanalysing the game to an extent almost equal to Gaster lore in the Undertale multiverse, an extent Miro coulda possibly not have foreseen while designing the game for a freaking diploma thesis.

    My personal speculation is that I think by having essentially no soul as a person, you literally have ambitions or path to follow and achieve simply because of the emptiness and void inside of you.
    The reason why Le'garde desperately seeks eternal change and existence is probably because he has nothing going for him. It's either that he's a sick artificial creation experiment of someone or his soul might've been lost/broken.

    • @Teargelis

      Very interesting interpretation. I can definitely see that being true.
      The idea of him having nothing going for him, in a way, is present in Termina. August tells you about how he was obscured by the God of Fear & Hunger and that he roamed the lands searching a way to fulfill the purpose he sees for himself, in pursuit of his "greater good" that he didn't serve. Le'garde himself, if you use Talk on him, states the the role of Kaiser isn't what he truly wanted, that "it's not ideal" but it's the way he found to push his agenda.
      Very interested in seeing what they'll do to him in the third game, since he yet lives.

    Soul types usually get enhanced once somebody ascends to New God status so Le'garde not having a soul and yet that lack of one still being "empowered" could be why he's so inexplicably unknown and unable to achieve recognition as the Kaiser.

  • @morningstar6467
    @morningstar6467 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Something you failed to mention is D'arce's S ending. She revives Le'garde and even without ascension he calls himself a god based on his experiences after his death. He views his old self as shell that held him back and he restarts his campaign as his bloodied, skinless self. This version of him is not charismatic but brutal and cruel to all that oppose him. The other new gods and Na'sharah confirm that the prophecy was bullshit and that Le'garde would realize that soon enough. In a sense, Le'garde molded himself to what humanity wanted from him rather the other way around which is a conclusion he could have reached in the S-ending and why he was so desperate to shed himself of his old identity. In Termina we see this perspective repeated by him as he views his younger self as arrogant and immature of his role in the greater scheme of things. Again, the implication seems to be that if the God of Fear and Hunger never ascended then he would have ended up the same as any old new god and repeated cycle.
    So I believe that Le'garde does not have a soul simply because Miro would have been more cheeky about it if it were otherwise. However, everything I said and the fact that Nilivan conceiving a child with an Ancient One soul born from their dream-sex implies that Le'garde's existence is closer to that "purity" the Old Gods talk about, less blank and closer to a void that encompasses everything and has no form. I would even go as far to say that Le'garde is similar to All-mer: "Le'garde" ascended as a human myth of humanism and progress while Kaiser descended to become the being whose soul accepts the taint and darkness necessary for humanity to actually advance. Both existed as one being, and maybe all new gods are like this, but Le'garde was the only one as a "human" who able to truly "ascend" because their soul didn't get in the way.

So when Legarde and Nilvan did their thing the soul passed down to the girl. Legarde looses the soul and the girl now has it. And I bet Nilvan knew this would happen and intentionally pulled the rug out from under Legarde's plans to become a chosen one.

    I think Le'Garde doesnt have a soul is because he himself is a mortal god, not a new god but an old god, the abstract concept of humanity made manifest. It would explain why he is ignorant, as the sum of humanity is ignorant of its place in the world, but he also seeks self sacrifice for the greater good, he is cruel and cunning, and he is power hungry, all aspects of humanity. He takes up miasma as he is willing to bear the burden. He talks sense into party members when their sanity is low because that is what humans do for each other when they are struggling and care for them. He doesnt have a soul because he isnt a human, he is the physical embodiment of an abstraction of humanity. His ascension is different from everyone else as he is not a human ascending to new godhood, but a nascent old god ascending to true oldgodhood

    Bringing up the fact that he may have been created similar to All-mere's other backstory does raise an interesting possibility for what his larger role may be or have been.
    Consider this: (this factors into my point)
    All-mere's two possible backstories could potentially be explanations for the identity of the Sulfur god and his relation to All-mere. While they might appear different and only for flavoring a backstory either account of All-mere's birth/ purpose has massive ramifications for the meaning of his story.
    If All-mere was born of a virgin mother than his story is one of a "miracle child" rising to become the divine savior of humanity. In this scenario the case of Sulfur being All-mere's discarded undesireable parts makes sense as Am still would have been of human origin thus casing off his impurities to ascend to enlightenment. This makes Am's overall story one of humanity pushing itself forward to a new age of its own making.
    But in scenario B the meaning is completely changed.
    If Am was created by a higher power to be the pinnacle of humanity than I would argue that Sulfur was there all along and the god that we know as All-mere is just an illusion. Scanario B makes Am's story one about a divine manipulation of humanity in the fact that humanity never achieved their own savior but were instead granted one by a higher power. If Am was truly destined for greatness from the get go than all of his acomplishments and even his benevolence should be called into question because in a way he never truly did those things himself.
    So in this context I'd like to posit that the theory of Le'garde not having a soul because he was created by a higher power could thematically make sense as his story is of someone who is just following the steps towards greatness, not forging his own path. I mean just look at what happened to him when he became the Yellow King, he was rejected, disgraced, and called out for the delusional fuck he is. All the while being subverted twice by beings who actually made strives towards new ways and methods. So I'd like to suggest that Le'garde may be the Fear & Hunger equivalent of The Anti-Christ or something similar.

    • @Teargelis
      @Teargelis  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      Le'garde as a sort of Anti-Christ is actually a really intriguing way to look at it . For the power he held it all meant nothing. He never succeded in what he wanted. I believe that the reason why you cannot take his soul is because of everything that happens in the lore, because, as I could read in some forums, Le Garde, on his way to acension, sought to obtain the 4 main souls, domination, torment, illumination and infinity. And he achieved it, the domination due to the constant wars and need for more power, the enlightenment provided by the "cube of the depths", the torment due to the horrible tortures he received in the dungeons and the infinity due to his insatiable desire to want more ( and also for his relationship with Nilvan). His soul is unique because of everything he subjected himself to, making the Soul stone unable to take his soul.

  • @emilianodelgado6573
    @emilianodelgado6573 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    Let's not forget that Nas'hrah, being also a new god himself, doesn't carry the name of his soul (enlightened one), so maybe it is possible that new gods calling themselves as their soul types is not a rule but rather a tendency
    Also, there is not a Heartless soul that we know of, so maybe the Heartless one's soul type is another that doesn't match her name
    So, the fact that the Yellow King doesn't reference a soul type in his name maybe is not necessarily a valid argument
    Thought it is pretty evident that he doesn't have a soul

  • @Lionhart1991
    @Lionhart1991 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Key point for me it's the miasma and the message that you can read when trying to take it, it does not say "there is nothing" but "does not react", his soul it's so strong/different (both) that can't be taken, it almost seems totally fused with his whole body so when a soul stone try to suck her, kust can't. We don't know if another way to take a soul exist but even if it does i doubt that can work, for me nothing can.
    So for me he has one but can't be taken and prob it does not have neither a specific name, a unique thing, kinda like if he himself it's the embodyment of his own soul. Prob you can just call her soul of Legarde. And you pointed out some hints about this in the video

    While I don't know how or why, I do think that a lack of soul is important to Legarde's success. Consider what you said about the enlightened soul, is it that scholar's possess the soul, or is it the soul that makes the scholar? Without an anchor to define his existence Legarde could define it himself, or rather more sinisterly without the anchor the greater powers could more easily sweep him up in their current, thus setting him on the path of prophecy.
    More importantly though you mention that something is different about Legarde ascended. If his soul is gone, there is more void to be filled with godliness, and whatever restrictions caused by sharing the space are absent as well.
    Also, I do not remember for sure, but I do think there is lore stating that humanity did not begin with souls, and some god changed that. If so that means that Legarde lacking a soul isn't an absolute anomoly for humanity, and may shed light on just how he is the exception in his time.

    I think Le Garde's motivations mirror what a robot / "Machine God's" interpretation of humanity would be. Slowly moving closer to "humans will never stop striving and dreaming simply because it's within their nature", he becomes a new God and takes to the human world to affect it directly.
    This callousness he shows when talking about people and the fact that he had no memory of D'Arce whatsoever in the first game makes me feel like it's either "his emotions were sealed / taken away in the birthing of an Ancient Soul" (which would imply multiple soul types synergize to become closer to the "Old Ones" since humans can't step over that bar by themselves. It took a human with intention and purpose, and a new God who had their own agenda.)
    I think his lack of Soul would be the exact same if you tried to take Nilvan's soul directly. Nilvan instead has a soul stone of another type of "Endless Soul" to fulfill the conditions of her plan to have the little girl ascend to allow humans to become more "equal" with the Old Ones. This is all speculation but she's the only one of which you can't fight in their "New God" form nor take their soul with a stone. I think that's a really key piece

    In F&H Termina not a single character has the domination soul, with the only known characters possessing it being from F&H 1. Probably because Le’Garde is striving for total domination, to the point you can’t even gain his soul after his death.
    Or, alternatively, his soul has been broken after he has been tortured in the Dungeons for so long. Since being in the dungeons in the first place was a part of his plan, he might have expected to get rid of his soul, one thing that made him human, to ascend.

    Him not having a soul to begin with would have implications for the lore, since no human character this far lacks a soul. It’s a strange detail to leave out in the second game, where soul types are expanded on and the effects of soulless-ness could be explored (even briefly).
    My guess is previously he had a dominating soul or a radiating soul, given that D’arce was his second in command and loyal to fault to him.

    As someone said in comments before about Le'garde having a soul strong enough not being able to be taken with stone here is my theory: as in termina we check the zodiacs it shows there are a few more soul types that we don't know yet. His soul based on his actions it can be an Abyssal one (if it could be named). My reason is simple: "If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss looks back". Legarde in his younger years wanted more while throwing away what he doesnt need, as Kaiser he accepted his destiny as someone who will bring out the last and new age.

    Gro-goroth is known to walk among humans disguised as a man. Le'garde could be Gro-goroth in disguise.
    And in addition to that, we know that Le'garde is the father of the little girl, I have a suspicion that he is also the real father of Reila and Olivia Haas. That is why when Reila became Logic (the Machine god), she didn't just turn into a new god but into something else, maybe an ascended god?

    • @Teargelis
      @Teargelis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Daan's Soul? The Blank Soul is likely tied to his lack of self-worth and his deep depression due to the death of his wife and his inability to go on without her or bring her back for that matter. He's generally nice to the other contestants, but his state is shown to be that bad outside of those interactions. His Ending B goes to show that too.
      I don't think the Blank Souls fits Le'garde, he values his own existence too much and is intrinsically tied to the world in many ways. I think the Blank Soul is representative of someone living a hollow existence, like they are truly absent from their own life. He has "nothing" inside of him in that regard, he has no will and nothing of value or anything to look forward to, which is exactly why he's implied to kill himself in his Ending.

    > Le'garde has no soul
    > Le'garde doesn't know he has no soul
    > Le'garde was prophetized to be the change this world needed.
    > The Yellow King wasn't the change. It was the Girl.
    > The Girl has the Ancient Soul.
    > The Girl was bornt from Le'garde and Nilvan.
    So, my headcannon, Le'garde was going to be the big deal because he has an Ancient Soul. He got prophetized to be the big deal because of his soul. That attracted the attention of Nilvan, who knew humanity was cursed to never trully ascend to Godhood. Nilvan steals Le'garde's soul and births the Girl, a demi-human (free of curse) with an Ancient Soul (the big deal).
    But that assumes Le'garde was bornt with an Ancient Soul. The Ancient Soul exists from old, that's why it's Ancient. So what if Le'garde is a reincarnation of Alll'mer. Except, he reincarnated with an imperfect human body, incapable of ascending. From where else can an Ancient Soul materialize, if not from a dead God.
    Old God Sylvian and Gro'goroth are gone, Rher is present. The God of the Depths is alive but dormant until the Player destroys his hearts (confirmed in Termina). But Alll'mer is just a body.
    So the soul must have come from either Alll'mer or the God of the depths.

Dominating through conquest, enlightened through study of eldritch knowledge, endless from the visitation of Nil'Van, and Tormented from his torture in the dungeons.

    I've actually been pondering this for a bit...what would happen if Moonless ascended to godhood? What kind of god would she be and how would this affect the world of Fear and Hunger?
    I know I'm going to be flooded with comments telling me I'm stupid followed by long diatribes on why only humans can become gods, but this is a purely "what-if" scenario. (although I wouldn't underestimate what's possible or impossible in this messed up game world)
    Think of it; the party facing the final gauntlet, only for everyone to be struck down or immobilized at the last hurtle. Best girl Moonless is able to avoid or withstand the hit, but she's nearly down for the count herself. And yet, surrounded by the people who've shown her kindness, who've given her a family after she'd been rejected by her own pack, she summons her last ounce of strength to protect them and sacrifices herself in order to fell this great evil who threatens them.
    Despite her physical corruption in the dungeons, her sense of loyalty held strong, and she made her mark on this terrible place in the only way she could (wink wink). She has earned her right to ascend to a higher power, as she once did amongst her own kind in the outside world.
    I mean really, she's our goodest girl. She'd be a hell of a lot better deity than any of the other whackos crawling around this place.

    I’m not sure if this means anything, but the Yellow King is an obvious reference to HP Lovecraft’s Nyarlathotep from ‘The King in Yellow’….maybe Le’Garde wasn’t human to begin with, but is Nyarlathotep, an Outer God/emissary (offspring of the Old Gods Azathoth & Yig) in a human disguise.
    An interesting fact about Nyarlathotep aka ‘The Crawling Chaos’ is that he is the only Outer God that uses a human like appearance, probably the most evil out of them all. Exists purely to torture others through deceit, manipulation and ‘chaos’….basically this is right up his alley 😂

My rationale for all of this comes from Fear and Hunger 2 where Daan is the only one that doesn't have a moonscorched body. Instead, he becomes the next host of Pocketcat. I am thinking he became aware of it and decides to use the experiences of his life to paint his soul with each soul type. That's just my thoughts on it.

    We are told that you must be born into becoming an Ascended God, not able to become a New God and THEN becoming Ascended. Le'Garde does not believe this and does not follow these set rules. Why was he so confident that he could do so when everything says he couldn't? If not having been beat to the punch by a little girl twice now would he truly have Ascended? I think so.

The men and women who died in his name, the children who gave their lives for him, all of it weighed on him to the point he felt he was going to break.

He was a broken shell of a man that could either keep digging for what his men fought for, or he could let it go and all of them died for nothing. Another thing to note they lack emotion legarde shows emotions and so forth so its likely he does have a soul but its not in his body i think most likely when the newground gave birth to the girl she inherited his soul. Judging from the yellow king ending legarde isn’t limited to what the new gods can do instead he’s doing a ton of things unbelievable for a new god. in part 2 since d’arce ending is canon it can be speculated legarde failed his ascension due to the girl already ascending. This further leads to the girl actually having no other than legarde’s soul otherwise it wouldn’t make sense for legarde to not have the exact ascension as the yellow king ending.

I subscribe to the theory that Le'garde is artifical human/homunculus creted by whoever, out of nothingness and this left him with now sould which is why he is so determined to be a part pf "greter scheme" of things in both games. Not out of goodness of his soul(Get it? Cause he has non), or altruism for the greater good of all but ironically because he was made less of a human.
    Like any human, he selfishly wanted to find his "true self". Despite in game telling us he came out of humble origins, I think he himsef made it up and the so called "prophecy" about himself to get more people on his side.

    There are more possibilities beyond not having a soul. For example, what if his soul was a combination of all different soul types--something completely alien that doesn't conform to the expectations of reality. He also could have something more than a soul. What if he's ascended the very concept of the soul itself such that his "soul" is something entirely different. He could also possibly be a non deterministic soul. What if he doesn't have a fixed soul type and his soul may change depending on some circumstances? He could also be an inverse soul. Like matter an anti matter, perhaps his soul is in some way the inverse of traditional souls? Another possibility is that Le Garde doesn't really exist--what if he is merely a hologram or projection from some other God or entity that controls him like a puppet? Alternatively LeGarde could be an alien or another being that exists at a higher level of reality than even the Gods? Just like how we can't observe anything operating in the 5th dimensional space, a soul operating in a higher dimension wouldn't even be visible or understandaboenin a lower dimension, although a higher dimension could almost certainly affect a low dimension

      Still haven’t finished the vid yet but I got to where my prev question is addressed, I think maybe legarde had to use his dominating soul to create the girl with nilvan

    Le'Garde mentions at the end of Termina he left his old ego wandering in the green hue. That term "ego" could be referring to the greek term for self. His attitude and abilities in the first game is reminiscent of the dominating soul type, so its very likely that he exchanged his soul for a chance to attain true-godhood.

    He had to leave part of himself behind when he escaped the Void. Says so himself in Termina.

    see this would make sense but he should at least have a soul in the zodiac way. like maybe his physical soul is missing but like obviously souls are related to your birthday so like what would his soul be if he was normal bc he HAS To have one its not like he was born on febuary 31st or something. like bitch and cry all i want im not gonna stop being a leo bc im the guy from a prohpecy.

    Is anyone actually surprised that the guy who’s supposed to be this universe’s Griffith doesn’t have a soul? 😂
