Where Are The Bertone Concept Cars Now?

  • Founded in 1912 as a traditional coachbuilding shop, it's from the 1950s that Bertone, thanks to the entrepreneurial skills of Nuccio #Bertone and the extraordinary talents he nurtured, first Franco Scaglione, then Giorgetto Giugiaro and Marcello Gandini, that Bertone flourished into one of Italy's great success stories. The firm's innovative designs were industry trendsetters from Detroit to Hiroshima. Meanwhile, Italy's thriving automakers were more than happy to let Bertone manufacture the sexy car bodies it had designed for them. #ConceptCars #Design
    However, by the late 2000s, the cracks in the company became large enough for everyone to see. The Grugliasco manufacturing plant went to Fiat in 2009, while Bertone's style and engineering business kept struggling for relevance in a changing world until its bankruptcy in 2014.
    During the firm's tormented last years, Bertone's prized car collection became a surefire way to generate cash and appease creditors. First to go were the crown jewels, unique masterpieces like the Chevrolet Testudo, Lamborghini Marzal, and Lancia Stratos Zero. Those were sold at auction in 2011 and went to private collectors like Giorgetto Giugiaro himself, who purchased the Testudo he designed in 1963.
    The "Big One" came in 2015.
    This time, all the remaining 79 cars and prototypes from Bertone's collection were to go under the hammer, and the news generated a buzz loud enough to wake Italy's Ministry For Cultural Affairs from its slumber.
    At the eleventh hour, the Bertone collection was declared an item of national interest: it couldn't be exported nor parted out.
    ASI, the institutional entity that represents the classic car scene in Italy, ultimately won out with a bid of around 3.4 Million Euros. The Bertone collection was safe and in good hands... But where would ASI store and display 78 vehicles?
    Well, at least until now, the answer has been Volandia, an aerospace museum located right in front of Malpensa Airport's Terminal 1.
    The place itself is full of charm, as Volandia utilizes the site of the former Officine Caproni, Italy's premier aircraft manufacturer during the first half of the Twentieth Century. It would be worth a visit even if the Bertone cars weren't there if you ask me!

      Yes I noticed that too. As a GT owner it’s nice to think that my car sits alongside some of the most legendary Italian cars ever made. Such a shame no one can be bothered to undertake a simple repair. So good to see the GT convertible there though.

      What happened in Turin between the 50s and 80s truly was a new Renaissance. Just like the original Renaissance, its protagonists may be gone, but their work never ceases to inspire.

    Bertone remains my favourite designer . The cars ,I admired from my younger years , Alfa Montreal.105 series cars, Fiat Dino Coupe , x1/9, and others

    It just goes to show that even a genius can have off days . Some really cool designs and some very questionable ones too . That doesn’t detract from how cool they all are though . Great video Matteo 👍🏻

      Couldn't agree more! Gandini and Giugiaro are giants, but even them didn't get it right all the time. Gandini, especially, seemed to go kind "off the rails" after 1974-75

    It's a real shame the dirty and neglected conditions, with dust everywhere, looted and vandalize (unique) cars, installations without pieces, zero security around the big plant of Volandia. I've been there last year just to see the Bertone Collection, as a proud owner of a GT Azzurro Gabbiano.

    Fabulous video, thank you for the virtual tour. I knew the Bertone collection was protected and couldn't be split up or whisked off to the US or to some Sheik's private garage....but didn't know who owns it or where it went. Great to see it in the video. Must go there some day...

    Thank you for highlighting where this collection is located, its now on my list to visit as soon as possible. We tried to visit Bertone in 2009 but the atmosphere was not good in what we now know were their death throes, and our visit was cancelled. Therefore we made the pilgrimage to the Villa D'Este auction to see the Crown Jewels as we thought we may never see them again. Thank you for confirming Giugiaro owns the Testudo, I had suspected this but never seen it confirmed. We were sat behind Fabrizio Giugiaro at the auction and he was taking instructtion over a mobile telephone from what I was sure was his father! He left soon after the Testudo so I always wondered if he was successful.
    I actually prefer to see the cars somewhere like this instead of museums like Arese or Turin. There they place too much emphasis on visuals and games to keep children happy, or those with only a passing interest in the cars. I want to see everything, nothing in basements or vaults, I don't care how dusty or broken, some of these cars have occupied my waking thoughts for 50 years and I don't want to see empty space.

    I wish I still have my X-19. I adored it, driving without the the targa on the freeways of LA in the late 80s
    It’s good that the Bertone collection is intact. Like art, some cars can be on loan to other museums.

      It still amazes me how much the X1/9 was (and still is, it seems!) in the USA. In fact, it stayed in production so long only because of American demand. I definitely should find a nice one to film and make a new video about it!

      I had 2 of them. A 1977 and then the 1979. The only downfall was the lack of power. But I could almost touch the rear grill of a 911 coming out of the esses only to lose all ground on the straightaway. The handling was incredible. Fun fun car. Especially the 1979. Had a 131 Brava too.

    Fabulous! Amazing to see not one, but two Kayaks. As you say, a massive missed opportunity for Lancia, and one of my favourite Bertone designs.

      There are two Kayaks because one is the original, non-functional motor show prototype, and the other is a fully working automobile instead, made later on in 1996 to try convince Fiat to make it.

    I visited a year ago! amazing place! Very nice to see your take.
    My favourites were Citroen Camargue, Saab Novanta, Autobianchi Runabout, Alfa Romeo Delfino, and that razor sharp Ferrari Rainbow, it was like a ray if light into a dark room.

      I'm afraid there's nothing to see anymore in what used to be the Caprie design studio. Everything inside has been sold off between 2018 and 2019 at several auctions. The building itself was sold off at auction, and I don't know who bought it and for doing what. By the way, congrats on your X1/9, it's a car I'd love to film for a new video.

    Thank you very much for this series ,I think that Italian car design of the 1950 -1990 will be considered as highly as Italian renaissance art and Miura, Stratos and Carabo will be worshiped like a Mona Lisa. It is most important that these masterpieces remain in Italy. No artist could have stayed exceptionally creative all his life, not even Michel Angelo could ,this is why grand master Gandini was less successful in his later years and not because he "lost his way".

      I do think that Italian design from that era should be considered a modern Renaissance... But I don't mind if very unique show cars aren't in Italy, as long as they remain exhibited in museums open to the public, where people can enjoy them and be inspired.

      Yes, the whole story is very Italian: utterly glorious yet messy and, ultimately, tragic. As I've discussed with friends a few times, Italy's weakness is our own incapability of being consistent. It's all genius then abject failure, with everything in between :)

    Great video Matteo! Few years ago I've been in enjoying the Collezione Bertone (actualy it was the main reason to organize a short road trip to Italy) Amazing collection despite as you mentioned, it's not as good displayed as it would deserve.
    Said that, it deserves a visit and would come back if some day I've in the area ;-)

    I'm Russian. I like especially the Zabrus. Would like it mass produced in Lada Factory (VAZ) in the last years of Soviet times. This special car could even improve our tragic history. This car looks like strong neutral soviet character.

    Hey Roadster Life, would you happen to know about a Lamborghini concept car from the mid-80's with an interior that looked like a spaceship/airplane cockpit? I remember sitting in one at an auto-show when I was a kid - and it was the coolest interior I've ever been in. Don't know the name of it though. It had flashing lights and buttons everywhere - even on the roof. Would love to find out what the hell it was after all these years.

    Bertone is actually my favorite designer. That concept design that he created for Lamborghini then applied on the XM is from another world.

    A bit sad seeing these legendaries, privilege, innovative beauties are stored in such as crowded facility. Government should support more, in order letting next next generation know all these genius designers craftsmanship.
    And be proud such as innovative for true automotive history.

    Cool video, but you kept repeating showing the same set of cars over, over and over. I don't like that. Once is enough and then focus on each popular car, like Green Alfa Romeo Montreal Bertone that you passed it by at least three times. Ha

    🤔🤔🤔 They showed most if not “ A L L “ of the cars and prototypes and some of them give you a sore eye or they are hard to look at but then they show the Lamborghini Miura and is such a relief. Those gorgeous and sensuous lines and curves and exclaim what a Masterpiece of design. Bella Machina. 😍😍

    some of these Bertone concept were exposed at the 2020 edition of Retromobile in Paris ( its the second largest classic car show in Europe ) I was there and I remember some of these like the Volvo Tundra , Opel slalom or Suzuki GO , Citroen zabrus , Lamborghini genesis and more :-)

      That's also why there were some cars missing the day I was there.

    A very enjoyable video showing amazingly beautiful cars.
    I recall a Miura SV displayed at Bologna airport when I traveled regularly from Germany. A beautiful car.
    I was always torn between the Fiat Dino Coupé and the Montreal, which I both adore.
    I wish I still had my first car, a wonderful yellow 1972 Fiat Coupé which I loved.

      Between the Dino and the Montreal, I’d probably take the Dino, especially if it’s a 2400. The Montreal is striking, but I don’t rate it as highly as most, from a design point of view. The Dino coupé is perfect

    Always had a soft spot for the X19 but most existing examples are horrible and not presented well - so nice to see so many examples side by side in such pristine condition - another fantastic video! Keep 'em coming (apologies for misspelling your name, sir) is it Matteo or Mateo?

    Many thanks to you for making this video. Who knows what will happen to those masterpieces and , even if they find their way into a proper museum, it's good to have a visual record of the prototypes for the general public to have access to. Best of luck to you.

      Thank you very much! The Bertone collection certainly deserves a proper museum, and ASI has often voiced that plan... We'll see. Given the cars and prototypes are an item of national interest, ASI has the legal duty to care for them too... Which won't be easy: you know, prototypes aren't like production cars, they were never made to last very long, so they can be demanding to upkeep.

      Thank you! I think Bertone's Kayak had more sales potential than the factory Kappa Coupé, but sure it wasn't going to be a brand savior, given the numbers such cars make.

      @@peterkleinveld9705 Not making the Fulvia was a disgrace, I agree. It wasn't made due to a combination of unfortunate events, sadly. Fiat in 2003 was nearing collapse, with zero money to spend. The Fiat Barchetta platform (upon which the Fulvia concept was based) needed much re-engineering to comply with future safety requirements. Management in those days changed every few months... And the window of opportunity was soon gone.

      That Punto was presented at the 1994 Turin motor show. It was a coupé study based on the Punto cabriolet, called "Racer."

    A stunning collection. Of course there are always some lemons, but most are as gorgeous as they are interesting.
    Too many great ones to mention.
    It is sad to see these things pass into history, but nothing is for ever.

      Indeed. Nobody gets it right 100% of the time, and nothing lasts forever. I only wish Bertone's downward spiral wasn't so protracted and painful, and that action had been taken right from the start to preserve all the historical assets.

    Fiatista and petrolhead, I was pretty shocked how Fiat treated Zastava's museum, models and even documentation when it take over that company, and, sadly, looks like that is Fiat's modus of choose. Sure, artistically and globally, Bertone is far more important, but on local, national and industrial level - Zastava have importance (not to mention that burning books is illegal - or at least it was in Serbia in 2008). Even for Italians, there is at least one Italdesign-cooperation full size concept of »Florida« berlina/sedan left on field for over a decade. As basically production variant of design seen as »Italdesign Orca«, even "normal" »Florida« is interesting car, but museum examples disappeared after purchase.

      That’s sadly Fiat’s usual way of operating. They have little regard for history, archives and museums. They also closed Chrysler’s museum in the USA

    Is the independent car design firm a thing of the past? Italdesign is now a division of VW, Pininfarina is part of Mahindra & Mahindra, IDEA Institute quietly closed down a couple of years ago, and Fioravanti hasn't been heard from lately.

      It is indeed, and has been for quite some time. Car companies simply do not contract out design anymore, and design skills and culture are much more widespread and readily available than once were, so Turin ceased to be a "hotbed" for ideas and design. However, the Turinese design studios could still have played a role, albeit a smaller one, had they kept innovating instead of resting on their laurels. Now it's late, their time has passed and will never be back.

    I would never expect a collecion of cars of this cultural importance to be housed in such dingy cramped conditions, but I am glad that at least they have been kept together.
    In my mind I had pictured acres of glass in a tall atrium (like the tokyo international forum in gran turismo 4's photo mode), leading to multiple glass-roofed exhibition spaces of various sizes containing curated arrangements of cars (perhaps within dioramas, or mockups of motor show stands), but maybe that was too wishful.
    Actually, to be honest, my first thought upon remembering vaguely that they were now housed in an airport was that they would line the upper floors/unused spaces in Turin airport or similar, since newer airport terminals tend to have lots of natural light.

      Volandia's old brick structures are a very poor location, totally agree. ASI wowed to make a proper museum, but that takes funds and political support, so I wouldn't be surprised if that never happens.

    some portion of the collection could be sold like the Fiats and most of the Lambos, sold to the respective
    companies they are branded to. Odd how some years ago I asked if concept cars could be purchased privately.
    Most people would issue a book of the Bertone collection and sell the cars exclusively to museums around
    the world, those with affiliations to the particular brands and designers they feature. I remember the Bertone
    dune buggy well, sort of ugly compared to the Manx, almost got a Bertone shell myself.

      As I mentioned in the video, the Italian authorities have declared the whole collection “of national interest.” It can’t be parted out, it can’t be exported. If it’ll ever be sold again, the buyer will have to take it all or nothing.

    If I think about who are today automotive designers, none come to mind. Let's never forget past and present italian designers who have left their mark in the automotive industry. Grazie Matteo for another great video. Had I known it was that close to Malpensa, I would've gone in 3 yesrs ago when I was in Milan. Keep up the great stories 👍

      Well said! Nowadays, car design happens in each automaker's studios, where dozens or even hundreds of people work, and the processes are fairly standardized. Hierarchy is pretty rigid too. Plus, other departments, like marketing and top management itself, love to influence design even if they shouldn't. It's a corporate world I've lived myself, but never liked. That's why we get nice cars, but few or none that spark the imagination.
      But, to be fair with modern designers (as I used to be one of them), I have to say their job is much harder now: after all, in the world that Giugiaro and Gandini lived their careers, there still was much to be invented about the automobile. Now we've pretty much seen it all, so it's very difficult for any new design to have a large impact on people.

    Italian industrial design is pure magic , especially from the golden era of Bertone . I'm restoring a Giugiaro designed MV Agusta ipotesi at the moment. When done I'll enjoy just looking at it as much as riding it .

      @@Matteo_Licata the italian lambretta DL model was designed by Bertone in 1968 . Some have an ' ink blot ' emblem on the front , reputedly a Bertone designer spilt ink on the paper drawing and they copied this into a graphic as a joke .

      Bear in mind that, as I said in the video, the collection had to be kept in Italy and intact. These two important caveats have kept the price low, as the bidder was forced to take all the 79 cars together, and won't be able to sold off individual pieces thereafter.
