  • What will void your warranty according to Subaru? Watch the video to find out. I talk about talking with Subaru dealers to find out what modifications I can do without voiding the warranty on my WRX. I address things like, will an exhaust on a WRX void a warranty? Will a tune on a WRX void a warranty? And most importantly, how to make sure you don't void the warranty on your Subaru WRX.
    Topics:
    voiding my warranty
    should you modify with a warranty subaru wrx
    will this void my warranty
    car modifications that will void your warranty

    I must be really lucky cause my dealer is fucking cool and almost everyone that works there is modded. They even told me they don't care and they been seeing my parts for the last year now and they said as long as I don't run e85 gas or fuck with the turbo they said they don't care. Like switching the turbo out. I now have the cat back, ap, tgv deletes and they have yet to say anything bad about it. I swear this is true, the first day I went in and tried to feel them out and ask what I can do, the guy looked at me and said if your worried about it just keep the stock old parts in case we have to put those on and take pics. They have been so cool and always doing a good job with the car and what not. I have been dealing with the same dealer and same guys that work there so maybe that's just that dealer and I got lucky. But I would advise everyone to feel out the dealer they are going to and if they seem like they are going to be dicks don't do it . It's not worth it.

    I agree with everything except how you said they can see if you tuned the car.. I am here to tell you that is all bogus. There is nothing left in the ecu note that speciafaclly say “this ecu was tuned” they can see key turn counts and reflash dates but no Subaru dealer is gonna deny a claim because of ecu notes. I had a tuner tell me this before installed my AP.. well guess what I installed my AP and got rodnock.. took it off and flashed it to stock and Subaru never said a word... they replaced that motor for absolutely free I didn’t have to pay shit.

    I took my j Pipe off, my tgv deletes off, my EGR deletes off and flashed back to factory tune to get my throw out bearing replaced at 25K miles. I also cycled the key 100 times on and off as per instruction from a friend who works as a service tech at Subaru. He said this makes it look like the Ecu hasn't had any modifications to its tune for atleast 100 engine cycles. No questions asked at the dealership.

    Mine is stage 2 with around 325 awhp..I had a grinding type of sound coming from the front that was hard to diagnose..Brought it in, since i look at it like you gotta pay to play, but I didnt think it was related to my mods..turned out my midpipe (3") was touching the crossmember bolt under acceleration..They took the time to make some adjustments for me to correct it at no charge..Now, running 20.5 psi, if I snap a connector rod, im sure I'd be S.o.l..
    I cant see driving this car stock..It sucks! The factory tune is bad for the motor the way the boost comes on so low in the rpm range. Zero top end power..Now it pulls like a train, and can run mid to high 12's..12k since stage 2..no issues

    It should be noted that there is no way to void warranty. Dealers can void claims, not entire warranties. If you lower your car on springs and a shock fails, they will likely void the claim because that component was working in a “other than intended use” manner because it was an out of factory or dealer modification using non OEM or OEM spec parts. But if a connecting rod fails or you’re blowing blue smoke, your springs have no influence on your engine so they have to repair this under warranty.
    Some dealers however are more modification friendly than others.
    I’ve never heard of this 5% rule, this must be specific to your region. My region does not warrant any ECU tuning whether you make 5% more or less power or not. However in my region, they’ve been very lenient with goodwill repairs for certain types of failures.
    For example, they’ll replace one clutch within the first bumper to bumper 3 year warranty. Clutches are considered wear items but they will replace it for premature wear even if it’s because of the user. It’s a favor.
    The dealer I purchased from is known for replacing entire FA20 engines in the WRX despite excessive mods and an aftermarket tune. Why? Because they want their cars to still be rolling around and want their brand reputation to be great because they simply can’t outsell Hyundai or Toyota. The condition is that the owner pays the price for a new ECM.

    This is something I have wondered as well, and personally I'm not interested in power modifications as my upcoming WRX CVT would be a daily driver that I'm basically planning to keep until the wheels fall off (so to speak) and I would prefer to keep the power not more than stock to ensure as long life of the car as possible.
    That being said, as a result, I'm definitely interested in any possible modifications that would help to further protect the engine and transmission such as EGR deletes and AOS (to prevent as much carbon build-up as possible) and possibly a Mishimoto CVT cooler (to keep the CVT temps down as much as possible). I really do wonder if Subaru would deny an engine or CVT fix in these cases since (as mentioned) they are not power mods, but at the same time they do add on to the workflows of the PCV/CCV (splice into), EGR (delete), and CVT (splice into) systems.

    Just bought a Magnetite Gray 2022 Premium WRX. It’s no It looks swwwweeeeettttt. Of course it’s a 6-speed manual, and idc if I drove from the time I woke up to bed I’d pick a manual 100% of the times I just wish it was a lil bit louder, and more turbo noise. On a side note my sales rep said that I couldn’t put a cold air intake on it because I’d have to tune it. I hadn’t heard of the 5% rule before, but goddamn these people act like a intake gives you 30hp. She said it was because of the new /bigger engine that big in it wouldn’t run right without a tune with aftermarket intake on it. If my Math is correct it’s about 13.6hp. I don’t care what intake you get! I wouldn’t think you would have to get a tune, or it would give it more than 284.6HP. I wanna know for sure if you can put a cat back exhaust on it. I have a welder, and Im alright at it. I have a technician certificate too so I was hope to find something out. An external waste gate, or a blow off valve wouldn’t be 5% either. Id say that void it tho.

I personally don't give AF if someone buys a CVT, but pretending that manual is going to be dead within the next few years is just silly. highspeedtubing “The FTC says the manufacturer or dealer must show that the aftermarket or recycled part caused the need for repairs before denying warranty coverage.”
      The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket or recycled part.

      Totally agree, no car company can deny service unless proven that the issue was directly caused by an add-on etc, my ford dealer even told me this, and since it is a Federal law, all companies are bound to it. So any dealer that tells otherwise, just wave a copy of *The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act* in there face and they can't do shit lol.

    • @PlasmaNugget
      @PlasmaNugget 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @highspeedtubing Under your reasoning, it would void the warranty to change your own oil. I really don't know why this is so confusing. It is the law that you have the "right to tinker". Any failure/fault to not be covered under warranty needs to be the direct result of a modification e.g. NOS blowing your motor is an easy example. Further, the dealer themselves have nothing to lose doing warranty work. The finacial burden is that of subaru and it is accounted for with allowances already in place on the books. People act like companies lose money doing warranty work but the fact is it's already expensed before the work, or need for it, ever takes place. (I'm an Accountant)

    Can the tune be reset if you use an AP or is it pretty much protocol to try and diagnose this and find if it's been flashed. In reality, unless the car was going to fail because of defect, a good tunw shouldn't break the car. Heard many ots tunes are SAFER than stock.

    --I just came from the dealer where I ordered my 2022 WRX and discussed the Subaru Added Security Gold Plus Coverage and regular power train warranty, etc. He said that a cat-back exhaust and intake does NOT void the warranty, esp. if I buy the Added Security Gold coverage. In fact, if I buy the Gold Plus coverage, it covers essentially everything and is not voided by me driving like a mad man and dropping the clutch. I specifically asked if racing the car, dropping the clutch at stop lights, blowing the engine, or sending a gear out the side of the trans case would be covered and repaired, and the finance manager said YES, Subaru will repair/replace the engine, etc. even if those circumstances occurred, so long as I don't mod beyond basic things like a cat-back, intake, etc. Change the blowoff valve, and yes it will void the warranty.
    --Also, there is a law (Magnuson Moss Warranty Act) that says that they MUST PROVE that your mod caused the damage in order to void it, so that is wrong. They also MUST PROVE that the upgrade was improper, i.e., that it wasn't tuned correctly.

      This is wrong in so many levels, watch some of the updated warranty vids. You were peddled a sales pitch. If you look at the underwritten warranty none of the above is true. Also Mag Moss isn't that, it just says you have the right to complete normal maintenance yourself. Doing anything to change the original performance of the vehicle is outside of the underwritten scope of what is normal.

    I know this video is a few years old, but the record needs to be set straight. Subaru dealerships have no say in whether the Warranty claim will be denied. That is strictly up to SOA, as the Warranty is between SOA and the Buyer ( you ). SOA also doesn't have a set policy in place for warranty denial aside from abuse. SOA has covered tuned engines on many occasions and will continue to do so. Lastly, your Warranty CANNOT be voided.... period. Magnuson Moss Act covers this topic very clearly. Read it.

The only thing that matters is what the law says.
      I have seen more lies from dealerships, and especially dealer service departments, than from a whole bunch of politicians. So unless someone puts forth some actual in-depth legal information on the subject to support the claim, I don't believe a service manager any farther than I can throw them.
      PS: You can start with the Magnuson-Moss Act. That federal statute defines warranties in the US.

    Hey I noticed you live in NH. I live there too. The front desk guy at the dealership in haverhill said that even a catback exhaust would void the warranty

    • @thinblueline2401
      @thinblueline2401 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should NOT void the warranty. I am looking into switching my exhaust to a Nameless Axleback 5" muffler, similar to the borla system, but with a little more rumble. Any input is appreciated!

    • @chuckfralick6456
      @chuckfralick6456 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Subaru SELLS the STI exhaust for the WRX - it's a smooth, mandrel-bent cat-back exhaust. Functionally identical to other cat-back aftermarket exhausts. Exhausts, unless much more radical (greatly increased diameter, etc) will not void a warranty. My local dealer even accepts a Stage 1 tune as non-damaging - they're smart enough to know the extra-lean stock tune is more likely to cause harm than a richer tune such as a Cobb AP Stage 1. Richer can mean cooler and for the engine, gets rid of lean spots in power delivery, etc. Not all dealers are hard headed about this stuff. You start changing engine components, going to higher stage tunes, etc, you do so at your own risk.

    I’ve been modding cars for 20+ yrs. It’s a lot of fun and exciting payoff. But why do it to a brand new daily? Wasn’t the whole point of buying “brand new” so you could get something reliable and unmolested and covered under a warranty? Don’t you wanna, not worry about your car breaking down and if it’s covered? Haven’t you seen enough TH-cam videos of these wrx’s getting modded and eventually breaking things related and not related to modification? C’mon people!!! It’s not a slow car! But to the ones making crazy mods, keep it up, I love the fail videos👍🏼👍🏼
