Collage Artists You Need to Know: Collage Art History & Collage Artists and Their Work

  • Hey! I recently had an art exhibition where I was pleasantly surprised to see so many amazing collage artists. This inspired me to make a video about some of my favourite artists that inspire me. Being a collage artist is a fairly new title and could not have been a movement until the innovation of the printing press. I'll talk through some collage artists you need to know and carry a loose collage art history narrative through them. I know I have helped inspire some amazing collages with my monthly art prompt list, now I am hoping to inspire you through taking a look at other collage artists styles.
    It was incredible to see how different artists used paper at the show, with some working in 3D pieces and others in flat ones, using different tones, and magazines. I think it's interesting that even though there's so much history of art, collage is still a relatively new medium, and it was great to see how different artists use it in their work.
    In this video I hope to inspire you to search for inspiration in other collage artists and their work. Here are a couple of my favourite along with my favourite book.

    I’m not a practicing collage artist (yet), but I’m a contemporary art school grad and I’m not buying into the idea that collage isn’t considered real art by the academic crowd. Collage is a powerhouse - it challenges norms, has theoretical depth just like any other art form. Exploring the intricacies of collage I’m genuinely falling in love with its diverse communicative possibilities. You’re amazing. Keep pushing

    Thanks, I was so happy to hear about the elder collage artists as I am just starting this journey, although without an art background, at 82. I am very excited about the possibilities!

    You may also want to look up Mary Delany (1700-1788). Collage art has been around for a much longer time than we tend to believe. The problem is that art historians leave out way too much art from their art history books.

    Yes, please, more please! I’m always scouring the web for Collage history (have always been à devotee of Matisse) as well as info on new collage artists. Just acquired 2 editions of Cut That Out! They’ve become my routine nightcap. I’m a newbie and a senior as well and so thrilled that my life has collided with Collaging! Thank you again for all that you do and for your own inspiring talent.

    Thanks for this awesome video!! As a collage artist I realized if I looked up collage art for inspo, I’d probably find men first. That gets tiring as a woman so I thought oh I’ll just search for female collage artists because I know there are so many amazing ones :) thanks for all the resources!! Also I love when you said Picasso and then “uh that’s a no for me” hahahaha

    For me the artist that validated the idea of making collage art high art was Lance Letscher. Although I have studied all the artists you’ve mentioned throughout my art history and art career, no other artist made collage more relevant for me. You need to check out his documentary. Recently he’s been interviewed on a podcast as well as during an artist spotlight at a university and those interviews are worth your time.

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know of his work but I will definitely look up his documentary, what's it called? I'm glad you were able to find your own "collage role model" 😺 it's important to have someone like this for our work!

    Oh yes it was very interesting, I've always loved seeing other work, especially for inspiration and actually yes I really need to get collaging again... I've not done any for a while as I've been recovering from surgery... Its fairly involved for me as my organisation is totally out of control which is another story entirely 😂😂❤️
    Pop art was very big back in Andy Warhols time and one or two artists pop up as collage artist but I never really found out about Richard Hamilton and his piece he made for Ladies Home Journal, was it a one off or did he do more collages too. 😁 Not sure if you know about him?

    • @flanzella
      @flanzella  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope you can get back to collaging soon ❤️ I actually do not know much about Richard Hamilton but I can look into it for sure! There doesn't seem to be much online, especially with there being so many others with that name 😜 thanks for watching 😌

      @@flanzella he was a British painter/collage artist in the 1950's...he is famous for the first piece of pop art collage/montage called "just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing."

    The one thinning going to say is that I went from acrylics to pastels and I'm now very into collage. And tbh my painting style and themes do not correlate at all with my collage or my origami. I think you trying to find correlation amongst artists own work is a flawed approach.

    Picassa makes me cringe, his art is fine, but he probably just went in life stripping off anything and everything he could and drinking the blood from any woman he got close to him, when you see his videos, he walks and moves like a todler, ewww
