    Jon! Jon! Another way to defeat a horde faction is to kill all of it's family members. If they still have a settlement but no family members, the faction dies. You can do this by assaulting their last city, killing all the family members there (the last ones on the field,) and then exiting the battle without winning it. Thus, with the family deceased, the faction dies.

    • @gadrill4285

      @@gadrill4285 I've seen it done by LegendOfTotalWar in his playthrough as the Eastern Roman Empire. In episode 1 he uses this very technique to dismantle the Goths without having them become a horde. I don't think the two use different versions (and I don't think CA has updated the game in the two years since each video came out.) You can check the clip out for yourself, if you want. He explains his rationale around the 1:13:40 mark, immediately followed by the Goths being destroyed by regicide (lack of family members) while still having a settlement. Sure enough, the faction becomes destroyed and no horde spawns. I'm only repeating what I've seen and done in my own tests.
      Edit: I corrected "huns" with "Goths" in one instance near the beginning of this post.

    • @timothyernst8812
      @timothyernst8812 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gadrill4285 Jon is mistaken. It's perfectly possible to kill a horde faction when they're settled either by killing the family members with assassins or by killing them on the battlefield but refraining from taking their last settlement. What triggers the formation of the horde is the loss of the faction's last settlement.

      Was playing as the Goths yet the Vandals swung my direction really early so I decided to not prolong the inevitable and attack them in some mountain pass before running back into my city and then fighting them off *again* on the walls.
      I'm still really proud of that despite the Huns showing up after the routed Vandals to snatch the city off me (or how the optimal strategy for the Goths is to just abandon the city and get a good head start in the horde race)

    Poor Decimus Flavius- he was the heir. But then he got dropped in favour of his father. Then when his father became Emperor, he was passed over as Caesar in favour of his pious younger brother. And now he has the defend Italy from the Vandal horde with nothing but a couple of units of cavalry. The poor guy can't catch a break!

    Playing Rome Total war again now I’ve got it working on my laptop and after watching you I am SWIMMING in money compared to how I was when I played before, like when I turned against Rome I just bought the Julii Scipii armies and used those to wipe out the factions and Egypt tried to betray me but I just buy off any army they raise

    Virgin head hunters were not the first female units in a total war.
    Germania had Screeching women and Scythia had headhunters in Rome 1.

  • @eldestoyster426
    @eldestoyster426 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sure dozens of other people have already commented on it, but the Scythians in vanilla Rome have two female units, actually, the maidens and the noble women, and Germania has the women who apply morale debuffs (and also axes) to enemy units. The Sarmatians do have slightly more, though -- iirc they have the foot archers, the light cavalry, and the horse archers.

    so if that religious conversion leader guy just chills out in the enemy's province, even hiding in some godforsaken patch of forest safely away from roads and cities, he can still convert people and wreak havoc on the enemy's peace? would the npc players eventually cheat to find his location and send assassins/armies at him or would he just sit there till the whole place is converted and theres no further point in having him there?

    Hmmm... I might have risked declaring war by attacking that vandal army then retreating back on to the crossing if it was possible. In my experience the AI doesn't really like to declare war by attacking armies but prefers to declare by attacking cities instead; but once at war its like moths to a flame if you can stand your forces in defensible positions and I believe that's your best chance to defend northern Italy. I may be wrong though.

    Great series so far. I would take your Faction Leader and wipe out the Vandal half stack to your west, then march back toward northern Italy. You should be able to stay ahead of the rest of the horde armies. There may be a place where you can make a stand, maybe build a fort at a choke point so the Vandal armies have to attack you one at a time.

    9:32 Have to disagree with this assessment. The population system in the Romeshell games (Rome 1 and Medieval 2) causes massive problems in keeping public order in check. All cities will inevitably rebel against you because of building squalor, and your natural instinct to lower taxes to raise public order causes population boosts which cause more squalor in a never-ending cycle until all your most loyal cities rebel on you because you can't build anything to cut down population without dropping public order to the extent that it'd rebel anyway.
    I totally understand that there's a layer of depth that's gone from removing that system, but that depth was the embodiment of fun ending bullshit that causes more frustration that it's worth.

    If you kill all of a horde faction's leaders in their last settlement then retreat and "lose" the battle the faction will be destroyed and a generic rebel army will take over the settlement. Better than dealing with a horde imo.

  • @Kabcr
    @Kabcr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can wipe out a horde by killing all their family members in their last city during battle and then withdrawing manually from their last settlement, thereby destroying the faction without taking their land. At least, that's what I recall. They might magically spawn a new member.

    Something I noticed in previous episodes but is also somewhat of an interesting question. While killing off the Frankish Leader and Heir at the same battle did not regicide them. Their last family member in Marcomanni became King. However, if you manage to somehow assasinate them while settle, does that kill off the faction (provided there are no other generals of course) or does that sends them horde anyway ?
