With the more useless characters I used to just send them around killing rebels - Gratianus the Lily-Livered took on thousands of troops at a time with just his bodyguard, winning many glorious victories and often being one of the few men from his unit remaining, emerging from the throng of the battlefield covered in the blood of his enemies and even then on his death bed he still was considered a craven coward.
The futility of his life-long quest for redemption always made me slightly sad.

      Brave Sir Gratianus ran away.
      Bravely ran away away.
When danger reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Gratianus turned about
      And gallantly he chickened out.
      Swiftly taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the brave, Sir Gratianus!

Yep! Some particularly lightweight units are capable of swimming during river battles, and I believe they can also do it when you're fighting on the coast, albeit I've never tried that. For very obvious reasons, though, it's probably not your *first* plan due to the fact that if you attack them at all while they're climbing out of the damn water, they're pretty much boned.

The province of Africa (Tunisia, East Algeria) was the breadbasket of the western Roman empire at that time.
Also cause of climate change (that would favor agriculture in northern Africa)
When the vandals conquered it (439 a. D.) managed to cut the main source of wheat that Rome had, inflicting one of the most serious hit to the WRE.
And started accumulating incredible wealth for theirselves, not sending anything to Rome anymore, until the Byzantines reconquered it. Still under the Arabs, that conquered it in the 7th century, it was a very wealthy province.

@@METALFREAK03 okay, what I said wasn't clear, and I apologize for that. At 70% public order, there will be no civil revolts or rioting. However, if the population grows during the end turn, there's a chance that the public order will dip to 65% or lower. Then, during the next turn' end turn phase, theres a chance for rioting and civil revolt. When I said he would have to keep an eye on those settlements, I meant that he needs to watch them to make sure they don't fall to less than 70% (65% and below) so that rioting and civil revolt don't have a chance of occurring. I hope that cleared things up. Sorry if what I said was confusing. Also, if you don't believe me, you can try it for yourself. In my experience, 70% public order has been the absolute lowest it can be to prevent rioting and civil revolt in both Rome 1 and Medieval 2.

I know I’m a few years late, but the best strategy I’ve found is still do scorched earth against the rebels, give up avaricum and carnuntum to rebels to act as a buffer (Salona is a VERY good city… 3 mines and a port as well as great defensible position), delete all units that are going to cost a ton… most of the cavalry and heavy infantry across the empire… and replace many with garrison troops like peasants. I know using peasants is a bit unrealistic, but they are literally the best garrison troop as their upkeep is only 50 gold a turn while archers (which are the next least expensive unit) cost 100. Border cities can be garrisoned with limitanei and archer hoards… yeah these troops are 100% defensive, but that is because you should be focused on building your economy up as soon as possible. This will let you make a super army in Rome that can do some expeditions through Germany and the lowlands.

0:50 Picts, Celts, Scotti.... I'm not sure what to call them. Pict, Latin, "the painted people beyond our borders". Celt, from Greek (Keltoi), "the foreigners", and it referred to people across north, west and central Europe. Scotti, from Latin, "the sea raiders up there". We could call them Dal Riata, but that kingdom wouldn't start until the 5th century, and RTW: BI starts in the 4th century.

I started playing medieval 3 when you did and at the time steam was saying Rome 1 wouldn’t work on my laptop but after this series started I wanted to play it so much I thought screw it and bought Rome on steam cos it was so cheap and it actually works! 😁 doing a brutii run now and after watching you I’m making so much more money then I ever had before. Trying my best to contain the other Romans but Julii are island hopping

Hey Jon, lovely video as always! Isn't there a mod that makes the soldier sprites in the distant look better? Because every time you zoom out inside a battle, they have a considerably lower resolution. Anyways, keep up the good work you jolly good fella!

There is no need for now, Syracuse will not spread paganism because it has no land border, and Vicus Alemanni is mostly pagan and would revolt if the religion was christian.

The Picts and the game speaking Celts did integrate after a while so although it was unfactual, you also weren't wrong, exactly. Pitcs were the "painted People" very north of Scotland. gaelic speaking Celts were everywhere in Britain and irland bar England cause well *gestures at game map*

Did Barbarian Invasion keep the siege tower missiles that were in Rome 1? Cause then you could always position your tower in front of enemies on the walls, let it stay there and fire off all the ammo it has and then move the tower to the spot on the wall you wanted originally.

You know, why the hell do the celts have gallowglass in the 3rd century? Gallowglass was a norse-gael class outside of Gaelic society centuries later, known for mercenary adventure snd martial skill.
This is before the norse even exist as they did historically...

Hey Jon, I just want to let you know that you can rename cities in this game. The option is hidden by default, you can enable it in the ini. Once enabled you can rename cities just like in medieval 2. I also commented on the subreddit, I really want you to see this.

960 peasants and 109 Raiders verses 61 Roman bois.
*Roman bois have a 50%> chance of winning.*
EDIT: 45:34 Also I see Jon's just as much of a spin artist as he was in the base game playthrough.

  • @caseycapp1724

Hey Jon, idk when you recorded this but horde-wise the Goths tend to head for Central Gaul and should be the first encountered horde unless the Huns or vandals take out one of the northern German factions.
