I’m trying to pull myself out of a deep depression after a year of fighting leukemia. I lost my job, my health, I couldn’t live in my own home for months. At 54 I’m facing rebuilding my life. Your videos are truly helping me. I’m one of those who has been in bed almost 24x7 and TH-cam is my escape. But since I’ve started watching you (and a few others) it’s truly helping. Thank you.

Your comparison between someone learning how to walk again after an injury and someone with severe depression getting out of bed really hits home. There’s no “atta boy” for those of us with real mental illness.
I think wording it as being my "own best friend" rather than "biggest fan" feels better to me, since being a fan of a person is something surface level, and friendship implies connection.
As a woman of 60, I feel that after 5 years of chemotherapy and losing my breasts and all I went through, I believe now is to get out of the stagnigatin and try to get a part time job. 😊

YES. Watch the whole video for the real insight! But here's an overview: 1) Get 8 hours of sleep a night. 2) Wake up at the same time every day, even on your days off. 3) Be your biggest fan: be somebody who appreciates the work you put in every day. Much of your hardest work will be invisible to the outside world. 4) Find your next step in something that matters to you. Having a tangible sense of progression is important. 5) Reduce or eliminate substance use: from heavier drugs to tobacco, alcohol, caffeine. 6) Follow a financial budget. 7) Set a screen time limit. 8) Talk back to your inner critic. 9) Move your body every day. 10) Eat a real breakfast. 11) Start a side hustle that depends solely on your own production. 12) Get serious about your hygiene. 13) Buy some new clothes. 14) Find a NEW hobby. Stagnation is terrible for mental health. 15) Connect with other people daily. 16) Don't buy stuff you don't need. 17) Go through all of your digital subscriptions and cancel anything that's not used or useful. 18) Downsize: sell or donate things you don't use to make your home a haven from stress rather than another stressor. 19) Do the last step, especially in your ADL's (activities of daily living). 20) Reward, don't punish. 21) Eliminate any optional stress (which sounds obvious but you probably have some!). 22) Focus on/practice one coping skill every month and use it even when you don't need it. 23) Focus more on the present than the past (depression: ruminating) and the future (anxiety: worrying), even when it's positive. 24) Whenever possible, go outside. (Inside can be chronically understimulating.) 25) Connect to something bigger than yourself.
No. 26 ( for me) a small act of kindness to someone every day. This seems to give me a sense of purpose and lifts my mood. Even if it’s allowing someone in a grocery cue , to go ahead of you because they have less groceries, or allowing someone who is changing lanes, in front of your car when in traffic , etc.
Im really really optimistic about this year for the first time i can remember. Even though it will be another struggle, i feel like I'm starting to figure this stuff out a bit!!!! Im starting to actually feel like a person who can exist in this world and i can actually feel a little bit of joy and excitement again its been so so long :)) hopefully this video will help that as well
@@LawrenceOfBessarabia yeah you absolutely can!! I mean it's taken me multiple years of dissecting my brain to even be able to start to feel joy (which was only like two weeks ago for me) but it's possible you can do it :)
Awesome. Just a little editing from "the year will be a struggle" to "the year may contain struggles, but...." Keep your shine going (even with the challenges). The world needs your best and unique self.
I watched one of your videos where you said if certain groups are not accepting you, that doesn’t mean you deserve less than, but try telling yourself you deserve better than. I have really implemented this and have found it to be very helpful!
💯 all these... The sleep and the eating healthy 3x a day, working out 🏃♂️🏋♂️ 4x a week has helped my depression in so many ways. Just start with those 3 first and be consistent. ❤👍
For many of us, budgets can feel limiting and overwhelming at the same time. The idea of a budget made me too fearful to actually do one. Here's an easy suggestion that I started in 2023. Get a cheap notebook and write down every expense every month. All of them, bills to a cup of coffee. It's one of the best habits I ever started. I learned so much about my monthly and annual expenses, caught and cancelled three sneaky automatic subscriptions, and actually spent a lot less than before I started tracking.
These are valuable with individuals who have emotional dysregulation, (cluster b) its a good reminder to have structure, yet choices for better health.
This was great for anyone who listened all the way through. I almost stopped to pick it up again later, but no, I stuck with it and it was WORTH IT! Try to motivate yourself to get to the end. It really is worth it. All 25! Except maybe a full breakfast! Doctors are now suggesting the first thing you do each morning is to rehydrate yourself. Before you get out of bed, drink a glass of water. I've been doing this and it makes a world of difference. Then hit the bathroom and take your meds. ♥️☘️
Dr. Eilers, your videos have changed my life. This is another fantastic one. The information you provide is so educational and you deliver it in way that feels so relatable. It sometimes feels like you’re speaking to me because you always say what I need to hear. God bless you for the services you are providing to humanity. I hope you and your family have a happy and healthy new year!
I’m so glad I found your channel. Your presentation style is so effective for me. You say things that I’ve heard, thought or read before and you make it doable and important.
Dr. Tracey Marks might can help but you'll have to search her older videos because her channel has shifted more into lifestyle improvements and taking charge while not depending so much on medical professionals. Im not sure if you have BD or Schizophrenia but she sure as hell helped me a lot when I needed it.
I resonated with the “new clothes”. I am pretty minimalist but I noted and commented with my therapist that I always wore the one comforting cashmere sweater I owned whenever I had a session. After I said that out loud I thought I’m gonna get more so I can be comforted all the damned time (because right now is especially hard for me). Yes it was expensive and a splurge but it was worth it during this incredibly difficult time (one of those dark valleys you spoke of in another video).
Very helpful list for the new year. I took notes and circled 7 of the topics I would like to start doing right away. Connect to something bigger than yourself - Faith. Be your biggest fan and follow a budget. I really appreciate these videos. I know I have developed a lot of bad habits to deal with depression and this list will help me make better lifestyle decisions in 2025.
Bought the book "Atomic Habits" last year and meant to read it. I picked that up and have started reading it. I have ptsd and panic disorder and depression that flares up when one of the other two does. So for me building habits a tiny bit at a time seems like the only sustainable way for me to make new good habits and break bad ones. Like hopefully smoking. 23 years is long enough.
Thank you for taking time to upload this video with these tips, it was ideas I didn't know I needed, but after hearing them - I realize I very much did. Going to write these down in big letters and keep near me, to remind me that there are still things that can improve my quality of life, not just the quantity. Very appreciated, I wish you the best. Thank you to anyone who read for taking time out of your day to read, be safe! 🤟🏼
Connection to a bigger purpose resonates the most. However, I don't like people. I can't see myself being part of a community and feeling like an important contributor, so this is definitely causing a problem for me.
Every one of your suggestions hit hard, and watching this was quite an emotional experience. Your comments about stagnation and wanting to feel appreciated rang true for me especially. I talked to many therapists over the years, but I rarely felt as seen or understood as I do when I watch your channel. Thank you. And happy new year.
I used to routinely do the 25 simple things you suggest on a daily basis, but have fallen miserably. I downloaded this valuable video and will play it when doing household chores or in times of anxiety or depression. I will try and take your suggestion and be gentle with myself. Thanks for this remarkable video, Dr. Eilers, and God bless.
Although it sort of fits under "21. Eliminate optional stress," I would specifically and strongly recommend *avoid consuming "the NEWS".* Once you give up the habit of watching or reading any world/local/political/etc news, you will see what little constructive impact any of it really has on your actual, day-to-day life. All it does is pollute your mind with worry, negativity and fear.
My sleep is disturbed by 6 visits to the bathroom during the night… so I sleep longer. Trying to solve the bathroom visits…. Docs haven’t been able to help - yet Thank you, Dr Eilers!!
Thank you for this free content. It's hard to change habits but hopefully one step at a time I might be able to improve. I've lost motivation to do anything and I just stay indoors. I don't think I'm depressed. I just have struggles that I'm struggling to fine the right help for.
I thought I was alone with my thinking, thoughts and behavior, you have given me hope for the future that I didn't have before, thank you so much. Steve
I would say #26 would be do something for somebody else. Be a cub scout for a day. Plenty of ways to do that without creeping people out. Spend time on the phone with a lonely person, or write letters to "pen pals". You can even get on a social media site and share some knowledge about whatever you are an expert in. I have an older neighbor who is not in good health. When I shovel my steps I just go next door and shovel hers.
these are great tips! the minimalism thing is SO true, decluttering and getting rid of all the useless stuff and only having essentials have done WONDERS for my time, energy, mental health, organization.. i really recommend minimalism and just donating/ getting rid of stuff you dont need!
Thank you. I am on a massive reload in life. A lot of this resonates. I don't take it exactly as I should do it, but it is GREAT help as I pull my life back together. Thanks again Dr. Scott.
Thank you so much for this video! You seem so genuine and committed to helping people, and I always find value in your videos and find ideas to implement in my life. Wish you the best in 2025! :)
I think the 24 ways sound good - but am not going for the three meals a day plus snacking. To me such a regime has proven to have the opposite effect, getting tired and next sad. Eaten once a day - and definitely not in the morning - and as low in carbohydrates as possible gives me SO much more energy, much mental alertness, and thus a much better mood. Happy New year to all of you!
I agree! I would double in size if I followed that 'advice'. wellmeaning but contraproductive. I introduced 36hr fasts twice a month so my days vary from zero to 2 meals per day.
Happy New Year Dr. Scott. This was a wonderful podcast to listen to and I listed it my journal (all 25!) so I can read it at least once a week. I found you right around when I started ketamine treatment for my MDD and you have been a true blessing and benefit to my life. Thank you!
Cannot even begin to express my gratitude for this VERY thorough list. I will definitely be listening a few more times. You helped me to understand some things that have been going on with my own mental health, that were really frustrating me. Now, thanks to this video I have tools to overcome them. This is such a doable and hopeful list! Thank you so much and Happy New Year!
Thank you for this Dr. Scott. This is my 2nd viewing and I will return to it. I find your work credible and helpful and ask you do add some of the science to further substantiate your talks.
Great! Thank you! From Maine USA. Tip #26: Put these wonderful tips on a list where it is visible day. Maybe in the present tense (No "I will's or I'm gonna's) : "I am exploring my passion a little more each day. I'm worth it."
I struggle with bipolar depression lots of days spent in bed. I want a higher level of functioning. No. 25 connect with something greater than yourself. For me that's my spirituality. It's what gets me through the hardest days. I'm thankful for your honest videos. I get so much out of your videos. God bless and happy new year
@DrScottEilers Thank you for your videos. ❤ When I can't get to my amazing therapist (he's the director of our local community mental health center) because he's swamped, you're a great surrogate ❤😊 I have suffered from Major Depressive Disorder for years. It's a struggle every day but y'all help, a LOT as does Dr. Ramani Durvasula, lately ❤
Happy New Year I have been following for a few weeks now. I have found valuable information. I don't have therapy just primary care have been to various Dr's and you by far have have put it all in prospective plus I save some of your videos to reiterate to myself. I'll keep you posted. For today my meds are in and I have gotten out of bed and watched grandchildren .no self care and I'm only out of bed for the hours their parents work well plus nap time so seriously sleeping alot .winter is the Worst. Have a great day thanks for listening and sharing
THANK YOU DR. SCOTT!! 🙏 Your wisdom is invaluable!!!! I will certainly watch this a few times.. As I often do bc of my ADHD. I'm trying to learn not to get overwhelmed be there's so much I need to do that you've mentioned... so I'd often then not do a thing ... but I will take it little by little bc any improvement will be beYond beneficial!!! Please know that your posts are a lifeline to me and I'm sure*** to most in this community!! ***TY❣️.. ✨Blessings!✨
Thank you Dr Eilers! Very helpful info! I was wondering if you could do a video on slow processing? Sometimes it takes quite a long time to process info. Any kind of info. Sometimes two or three weeks later a conversation I had earlier comes creeping in. lol But doesn’t register at the time. Thank you 🙂. Or am I the only one?
This is wonderful advice! I know the doing hobbies and things you love/enjoy are very important. I’ve been a creative person my whole life, but I stopped creating art for about six months. And that was the worst my mental health and depression was. Now, I make an effort to create each day, and I feel better. I’ve started making videos, and I’m wanting to have an art business someday.
Excellent advice and summary and no, it wasn't too long! Question on #23: I may have missed it but you mentioned two reasons to be present, #1 we're happier, I didn't get #2. Thanks for your care in what you do!
I don't really see starting a side hustle as a great way of coping with anxiety. That just seems like something, for most people, that would create more stress. The majority of people do not have the ability or desire to create content online or sell some type of product for income. Seems to me a massive part of the problem in our culture is this push to be productive all the time and if you're not earning money it's not worth doing. For me, this is a terrible idea.
I suppose it depends on whether you are looking only for a revenue generator or if you have something that you love doing that could be monetised. I'm a few weeks away from starting one for myself. It's not rocket science, actually rather repetitive but the result is something I have a core belief in. It would be nice if I could translate it into an income stream that would allow me to be self-supporting but that's not a requirement, just an aspiration. Side note: I've decided to end my IT career of 30 years and to become semi-retired. I live on an inland waterways boat so minimalism is the order of the day. It's also much cheaper to live this way than a more traditional housing option. This last year was a bit of a street fight for me. I'm now in a place where I don't dream of my work and that's a great thing but it wasn't easy and certainly not quick.
I agree. My whole life, I’ve felt like I should be doing something productive all the time. If I ever stop and take a break, I’m afraid that I might relax too long and then I will be a lazy person. I’m also am easily stressed by juggling priorities and different areas of my life, without adding another sphere to the mix. So I’d be better off implementing a stricter budget than starting a side hustle. Other people may benefit different.
My side hustle made me feel better about myself and helped drag me out of my depression. I’m learning new things and making a little money. So, I guess this suggestion works for some.
Thanks for these concepts, you've given me a lot to process and try out. To your question what else, I have found listening deeply to other people is a game changer in life, and helps in depression as well, to stop only thinking about yourself. Covey had a nice concept on deep listening at various levels: repeat, rephrase, reflect. Worth looking into and practicing.
This is incredible information. Can you please do a few videos of waking up in a panic middle of the night anxiety Please Please Please Thank you God Bless
This is a great idea. I would love to know what's behind the sensation of waking up with chest tightness and panic. Can we experience anxiety while unconscious?
Very valuable stuff Doc. I'll implement these one by one, with No. 25 being the anchor all the way through. This chat would be my acoountability partner, where I'll update my progress/stagnation/regress honestly.
Thank you very much for the tips and ideas!

Thank you Dr. Eilers. Some of the things you mentioned are so simple but very valuable to our happiness.
Simple things are often incredibly powerful ❤️
Thank you, Dr. Scott. This is helpful. You understand more than most.
I love these types of videos. This channel is so helpful.
Sound, direct, powerful, practical and applicable advice. Rare to see and hear in the mental health video essay world that is prominent right now
Thank you for these reminders ❤❤
This is so good! Some of these tips I’m definitely trying to be more intentional about in 2025 as it relates to my mental health.
This video is GOLD! Thanks, Scott 🙏
I'm hoping to find more in-depth videos from you on each of these topics.
You went through them quickly! It was a long list! Happy new year
Dr. Eilers is spot on all the time. Why can't all mental health pros be like this?
My sleep is disturbed by 6 visits to the bathroom during the night… so I sleep longer.
Trying to solve the bathroom visits…. Docs haven’t been able to help - yet
Thank you, Dr Eilers!!
Thank you for this free content. It's hard to change habits but hopefully one step at a time I might be able to improve. I've lost motivation to do anything and I just stay indoors. I don't think I'm depressed. I just have struggles that I'm struggling to fine the right help for.
This is fabulous! Will be re-watching more than once for sure. Thank you Dr. Scott for always providing practical wisdom.
I thought I was alone with my thinking, thoughts and behavior, you have given me hope for the future that I didn't have before, thank you so much. Steve
Your videos are soooo helpful. They are really happening me function and recover after chronic depression.
Excellent piece! One ot the best things I've seen in a long time. Simple, practical ideas that one can implement swiftly.
You are helping me so much with my mental health
Sleep is really important. I find that when I get less 8 hours of sleep, my depression and anxiety increases alot
Thanks Scott. Found a copy of your book on ebay as you suggested 🔥
Thanks! Glad you found it even if it means some jerk was selling it 😂
Thank you. I am on a massive reload in life. A lot of this resonates. I don't take it exactly as I should do it, but it is GREAT help as I pull my life back together. Thanks again Dr. Scott.
Thank you so much for your insight Dr. Scott🙏
i really needed to hear this , thank you
Thank you so much for this video! You seem so genuine and committed to helping people, and I always find value in your videos and find ideas to implement in my life. Wish you the best in 2025! :)
Thank you so much Scott ! You're amazing !
Likewise, I was best when on OMAD. It's a massive struggle to get back to it.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this ❤
Cannot even begin to express my gratitude for this VERY thorough list. I will definitely be listening a few more times. You helped me to understand some things that have been going on with my own mental health, that were really frustrating me. Now, thanks to this video I have tools to overcome them. This is such a doable and hopeful list! Thank you so much and Happy New Year!
His videos ignite hope within me. It feels possible to stop beating myself up.
@@fmattheu921 I agree!!
This is a wonderful video…will watch again!! Thank you, thank you…… this is wonderful for the new year, Carole❤️
Thank you for this Dr. Scott. This is my 2nd viewing and I will return to it. I find your work credible and helpful and ask you do add some of the science to further substantiate your talks.
Thank you for your dedication to this content. It is very helpful and your approach and perspective are both so necessary. Happy New Year to you.
Great! Thank you!
From Maine USA.
Tip #26: Put these wonderful tips on a list where it is visible day.
Maybe in the present tense (No "I will's or I'm gonna's) :
"I am exploring my passion a little more each day. I'm worth it."
Thanks for this video, Dr. Scott! It really helped.
What a great video! I'm only 11 minutes in and this is awesome! What common sense! Thanks for making it!
Happy New Year
I have been following for a few weeks now.

Please know that your posts are a lifeline to me and I'm sure*** to most in this community!!
***TY❣️.. ✨Blessings!✨
Happy New Year 🖤
I don't watch your channel wanting breadth in subjects so I appreciate the depth always
This is a beautiful list, I love it. I'm going to add #26 - listen to all of your videos :) Subscribed
Thank you! Happy New Year
This is wonderful advice!
I guess I'm doing well because I'm already doing most of those things on a daily basis.
Thanks ❤❤❤
I’m so looking forward to videos about mental health and finance!
Excellent video and just what I needed going into the new year wondering how the heck to cope.
Excellent advice and summary and no, it wasn't too long! Question on #23: I may have missed it but you mentioned two reasons to be present, #1 we're happier, I didn't get #2. Thanks for your care in what you do!
Great list. Thanks Scott
Yeah, kinda sus..
Agree
My side hustle made me feel better about myself and helped drag me out of my depression. I’m learning new things and making a little money. So, I guess this suggestion works for some.
Could you do an episode on healthy relationships for people with anxiety and depression?
Thanks for these concepts, you've given me a lot to process and try out. To your question what else, I have found listening deeply to other people is a game changer in life, and helps in depression as well, to stop only thinking about yourself.
Covey had a nice concept on deep listening at various levels: repeat, rephrase, reflect. Worth looking into and practicing.
Thank you. Follow a financial budget is one I want to work on.
Thank You Dr. Eilers, your video is very helpful, as always!👍👍
Happy New Year to everyone 🤗
Thank you so much for your wisdom. Your videos are really, really great.
This is incredible information. Can you please do a few videos of waking up in a panic middle of the night anxiety
Please Please Please Thank you God Bless
This is a great idea. I would love to know what's behind the sensation of waking up with chest tightness and panic. Can we experience anxiety while unconscious?
Thank you!
Very valuable stuff Doc. I'll implement these one by one, with No. 25 being the anchor all the way through. This chat would be my acoountability partner, where I'll update my progress/stagnation/regress honestly.
This is awesome!! Thank you!!
