You might monitor the temps for the summer. Don't want to build a sauna for him. I know I built a dog house when I was a kid for our dog. He tunneled under it. It never dawned on me that in 100 degree summer temps there was no air movement in it and it was super hot in there. He would lay in the cool shaded dirt under it that he promptly dug out! Likely not as hot where your at, but in the summer months maybe a fan you can block off of the winter on a thermostat (like an attic fan) to move air.
Because of the placement of the house, I would have probably try to use the garage to someway duct some air circulation from the garage itself. No need for heaters or cooling in the dog house itself. It will draw air from the climat controlled garage.
You can add a staircase near the low end of the roof for a doggie sun deck. Just run the stairs width wise for a small footprint and maybe throw astroturfing on the roof. Cool build!
Seems a bit small for him. Your upper body torso couldn't even fit when trying to sheet it on the inside. You had to take down that middle stud. Ho is he going to fit in there AND he's just a pup. Definitely should've gone bigger on this one to account for Rocky's growth. And I guess you can always build another one. And heat rises not down. Definitely add a solar fan for the big little guy. Loved the build tho
That was my first thought. Just looking at those metal crates some people buy to house their dogs indoors, their sizing guides state the absolute minimum space required should be adding 4 inches or 10cm onto the height and length of the dog, from nose to tail when standing so as to ensure the dog has enough space to be able to stretch out when lying down. The doggy home built in the video started off with a 3ft square and then 2x4 walls were added onto the base, meaning theirs barely enough space inside for a daschund or other small sized dog, let alone a 9 month old and growing Labrador. To make the dog home more comfortable for a growing labrador, the base needed to be at least 5.5ft square, possibly evenm 6ft to take into account the walls around the edges so as to allow the dog to be able to lie down comfortably.
Should have made it a little bigger & elevated the water bowl. He'll have to bend so for over to drink from it. Our Golden Retrivers do well with elevated food/water bowls. Otherwise looks great.
You can always use a kiddie pool for those hot days when your dog wants to cool off. Will you put a doggy door or curtin on it in the winter to keep the heat in?
That was beautiful!! You will definitely need a flap in the winter!! Tractor supply has the livestock bowl you could have mounted to the house and had an auto refill on it. I’m sure I’m not the only one Wishing it was like 10 inches wider or longer. If he is 9 months old he will definitely be getting bigger! I don’t think you said what the dimensions inside are ? Could be bigger but can’t tell. Real life is always more accurate than a video ahaha. God bless !
He's got bigger problems than a bad understanding of hot air rising, like the fact that all that heat is going to escape immediately due to the entrance being always open.
I don't know if you noticed but the wall that you had to take the stud out, you installed the insulation the wrong way. You installed it with the paper out when in reality it should have been turned around with the paper inside. That one wall was installed from the outside in because of space so the insulation should have been turned around. Just figure I mention it incase you missed it, my OCD triggered a little bit lol either way awesome build and I'll definitely be building one for my German Shepherd!
@annwithaplan9766 yeah I don't know for sure. I mean realistically if not installed properly it could just not work right meaning it would still retain heat. Being as how it's only one wall it wouldn't be that much of a big deal but putting that much money into a dog house you would want to do it right.
Dog water bowl no bueno. The doggie will have to crane his neck to drink. Food and water source should be at even height with his head as he is standing.
Yeah, I was wondering about that too when I watched it. Even if the concrete apron wicks it away as the other reply said, I think it would be safer to have the roof slope from the side of the house into the yard directly.
That trex decking (if in the sun) can't be used by your dog. It will be too hot to lay on and too hot for his paws. Nice build though, although I do think you went over board on the actual structure of it.. Also, that water bowl is way too low for your size dog. You will have to raise it up in order for him to use it. He shouldn't really have to get down low to eat or drink.
Did you start with the house to prepare you for the dog house? 😂🤣 You could spray foam the bottom the kind you use for small cracks in doorway and windows and add a small fan. And the heat pad on the ceiling it may not work because heat rise but also because it's a small build it might be okay just check on it when it does get cold. Like having a separate thermometer sensor close to the bottom and it's hidden so the dog can't chew on it.

That was exactly my concern, though another poster noted that the concrete in front of the garage may be sloped enough to run the water into the yard. Still, I would have designed the roof to slope off the side of the house and go directly into the yard.
I rly hope you just did this video to showcase how to build some stuff and not keep the most "family-dog" of all dogs locked alone in this confined space for the whole time.

cool dog house but you should have added windows 🪟 on the sides so your dog can look out the window 🪟 also ditch the water bowl and get him an automatic water and food feeder that water bowl is a easy access for mosquitoes 🦟 to lay their eggs in and if your dog drinks out of his water bowl and ingests what ever is in your dogs water bowl thats not visible to the human eye your dog can get parvo and you definitely don’t want that to end up destroying your dogs health and possibly killing your dog also add a solar powered porch light 💡 for your dogs house 🏡 to light up his porch during those dark nights also get him a raised dog bed it will keep him off the ground and keep him warm in winter and cool in the summer and it will help him in the long where his joints wont hurt him just a thought but other than that great job 👏
That is a "baller" dog house. Not to be critical, but the way you have the roof pitched is going to direct water to the entrance of your garage and the house foundation. You should always try to direct water away from the foundation of the house and as far into the yard as possible.
