I'm retired 69 yo and physically disabled. I'm collecting my SS Retirement Benefits. I bought a 2 bedroom 1.bath 1,000 sft foreclosure in the Poconos PA. Cost of house with closing costs, total $20k. Took a HELOC for $18k for a new roof, gutters, fascia soffit, roof edge ice melters. $198 a month mortgage now. House worth about $80k now. Can't rent a room for that little. I was an electrician so that was first priority. Other interior things to tackle as I can. 3/4 of my property surrounded by woods on dead end Street. I'm happy. I work a part time consulting job because I love the job and owner is great. Job is just to give me something to do each day.
Matt is blue collar through and through, but he does have an artsiness to his editing and finalizing his videos that shows that he's a younger millennial. It's a nice touch
Dude the pics and little diagrams were so helpful. I’m an idiot and only know how to work hard. So pics definitely help me see. I have no imagination so that was a real game changer. Please do more of that. That’s literally the first time I have ever seen that being done. Like when you showed where the pad was gonna be at. And the fence. Perfect for guys like me.
@ I also just bought a mill and have a tree business and am looking to build a little home with the lumber. I know you mush be really busy being a builder and all. But a series using rough lumber would be cool. Or even just building and being very detailed like these videos would be a hudge help. There are a lot of videos that show the process of building, but nobody ever really goes into it in depth. Be nice to have that.
20:22 putting the blade down would prevent you from tipping. Also, although you didn’t need to for that chunk of concrete, you can move something too heavy to lift (Without tipping) with the excavator boom, by pulling it up onto the blade and then lifting the blade and the boom at the same time… Keeps the weight closer to the center of gravity of the machine.
I'd love to have you totally remodel my home in the L.A. area! I can't tell you how much I love your expert skills and attention to details. I'd trust you to do the entire project from planning to finish.
It’ll be a fun one here.. Nice windows on the home, beautiful siding, complete makeover inside. I’d like to make it not so noticeable that it was once a hoarders home. 🏚️
Can’t thank you enough Matt for the content, I’ve been watching your channel for years! I’m building next spring and will general contract everything myself. Do you have a video on recommendations to reduce overall cost and give your feedback? Because I would be very interested! Also, Good Luck on this series, should be fun to watch!
lookin to get back into construction startin a 2 man contracting company with my best friend and watching you is getting me excited to get back into it.
This is Awesome! So excited for this series like many others. We bought our first home last spring. I have a swimming pool company so my busy season is from April till November (Ny we close pools in the cooler months). Then, we had our first born in December. Safe to say I didnt have much time to do what I had planned and dreamt of for years, owning a home and working on my own house, making our house a home. My son just turned 1 and the next few months I am getting to work! I’m so excited planning things out. I wish I could video through the process as you are doing, but I wouldnt even know where to begin as far as storage and editing/putting together a video. I’d love to talk through my thought process and how as a diy’er you can research, take your time, and do things right, and save yourself a ton of money and learn things along the way. Maybe one day i’ll get to do that. For now, I’ll enjoy your videos Matt!. One question I had is with the construction knowledge and skills you have, and the complete reno you plan on doing, at what point does it make sense to just find land to build a new house on vs spending $80k (in that particular area) for something you will be basically completely demo’in?
I have a few buildable lots in this area, I was going to break ground and build new on one of them instead of doing this series, but I ran into a road block while drawing plans / engineering. I’m still going to build it soon, but caught this house at the right time and ran with it instead. Even with me self performing a good majority of it, I find myself spending $150K-$180K in permits and materials, subtrades, etc. I ran into $50,000 city hook up issues right off the bat, which we’re hoping to resolve with the city. If I can get past that, we’re breaking ground late next year on that build.
@@MattBangsWood makes sense. Also, this reno will likely be much more relatable for people wanting to do the same or renovate they’re own home to a degree. Anyway, cant wait for the next episode! Stay well brother 😎
So cool, great video. My family had a couple acres of land that I wish they would have utilized for a cabin. It was all thick of baby trees so was never useable in its current state. It was sold to the neighboring family. My dad had started clearing trees before the sale and it had a lot of potential. Oh well. My uncle said I could have a campsite on his land he inherited from my grandma. It’s 15 minutes away. There’s a natural clearing I think I’ll start off of. Then put a camper or small cabin there as a close getaway
Matt! When do you start working out in Klamath! Hit me up next time you’re up this way. I want to work with you! I’ve self built 3 houses and a 2000 sq ft shop and am working on building a multi generational home on 30 acres of forest out here in Klamath. Hit me up! Been watching you since working with Fox and the beginning
I have a similar drive way. My biggest issue is water. I'm all down hill and whoever made this didn't think ahead on how things are affected. The slab cracked in the middle, which pitched it where all the water collects at the front, left corner where my house sits on a pier and beam next to it. Then it all runs the entire front if the house. Then if it's too much water, it runs along the side of the house, with the slab, erosion causes some water to run the back too. The roof is made to where all the water runs in front and back. A smarter builder would've ran it with the hill, imo. I wish I ignored everyone's suggestion and just tore the whole thing down and built brand new. I think if I tear out the slab and make a drive way that runs from the street, all the way to the back, passed the house, AND angle it away from the house, things could be better. But the front is still an issue. I could probably build a little higher and away from the front.
Great to see you back on the tools Matt. Look forward to watching the video series on this neat reno project, entertaining and very informative. Look forward to seeing what the end project looks like.
That retaining wall looks like it is leaning. Wouldn't it be a good time to fix or replace that while everything is opened up and easy to get to before building the structure that will run alongside of it?
It definitely is, it’s coming out. It’s crumbling, so I’ll break it up and take it out when the time comes. The 50’ to the front of the property won’t be bad, the 15’ along the studio will suck. It’s getting done around the same time, but I’ve got a plan and a mini excavator.
Well, well, well....... My hat's off to you young man, great job and it's sounds like an idea what you want to do. amazing i want to see the outcome of this project. Question is this a weekly program?? Watchin' from the Pacific Northwest USA Toppenish, Washington
Yes; weekly unless we have other stuff being shared. Thursday mornings at 9:00AM I upload, this projects in the PNW as well. Once we’re through with this studio, we move into renovation of the home. Looking forward to getting there!
10:20 I assume you have a cordless reciprocating saw. They make arborist blades that work wonderfully and would have done that job easily, just saying.
It’s been a good time, nothing left untouched.. this place will be my over-budget little passion project. I want to hard cap at $35-40K.. but I see $60-80K going into it.
Something tells me that old storage shed was original to the house. No slab foundation, just 2x12s layed on the dirt and built directly onto the ground tells me so. That's how registered accessory buildings on a property were built back then and that shed must've been built in 1926 too. Probably stored a Ford Model T or Model A at one point. Those were fairly small cars before America wanted big land yatchs. Lol
Man wouldn’t that be something? It being original is believable.. Old 2x4 construction, the neighbors been here since ‘71 and said it’s been there since before he was there.
Yeah, I'm not sure I'm too keen on polished concrete floors. For me, that's too much of a barndominium vibe, IMO. Vinyl plank flooring would look much better and is a lot more budget-friendly.
This is going to be so sick. My Son and I are going to be watching every episode - I’m one of those nerds who wishes I could watch it all right now lol.
My only question watching this series is why Michigan? If you live in Southern California, why own properties most the way across the United States, other than an investment opportunity?
Looking forward to this build series. I've done hundreds of these in the fifty years of construction it's always something with these old houses. I used to run into knob and tube wiring some live some not or speaker wiring. Always a complete gut floor joist two bye four walls on twenty five just crazy crap and the dust aw man that dust
You’re spot on! It’s always something with these old ones.. Open something up and you’re finding more surprises. I’ll get into it soon, I struck out on the house.. It’s got some updates!
Without being to specific, where is this place? And I vote polished concrete. Easiest to keep clean and you can put an area rug down if it's too cold under foot.
I still feel young.. but I've been with my wife for 14 years, our daughters are 12 & 7. I definitely feel like I'm getting older! We had a rough start with our oldest daughter (major health complications, changed our lives forever), it changed the way I saw life from then on. I'm thankful for every day here above ground. Havent watched the video yet so im not exactly sure what the title means as a whole but if we're going off of selling price then i think tia has you beat with her $1 house
Good Job Matt! Buying a house in Cali is not easy. Your hard work has paid off and it's an excellent decision for you and your family. Today it's $75k, tomorrow it'll be worth $75M.
That was a garage not a shed . You must live in a poorer area ot the country to find a decent house so cheap. What is the lot line set back rules in the area?
Likely not, $80K + $35K I'll have a $200K home. If I built new, my cost would be around $125-150/ft if self performing. I'd be $150K + permits ($5K) + utility hook ups ($8K in this area) + land cost. I have lots here that I'll be building on in the near future.
@@MattBangsWoodWell if you got land at a good price and then built in an area where the homes are worth say that 500k to 800k. There has to be profit if your the builder. Especially when the value of homes has doubled right???
Can you imagine all the 100+ year old silver coins just under the surface in thar yard? Who knows what was on that property before that house was built. Sigh………
Little further north. Might be a stretch.. I may board it myself, but I’d like to have tapers come in and make it good. Can you email me? MattBangsWood@gmail.com
I have areas that I’ve invested in over the years. I watch for ups and downs, just before the election there was a ton of uncertainty.. Running comparable sales with similar location, SF and newly renovated. This home remodeled with builder grade products puts it around $200K. We’re going to have the nicest windows money can buy, beautiful siding, nicest fascia board, etc.. I’d be happy with $200K still, but mid $2’s isn’t out of question. Last few places I’ve bought were fire sales, people just wanted them gone.
We’ll be at World of Concrete and International Builders Show! Shoot me a message on Instagram, I typically post where I’ll be each day. Would love to meet up!

@ it is is just you get a 100 year old shoe box in the middle of a shit hole hahaha
Where is this?
Where did you buy? What city?
It’s out in PNW. We’ve got an area we’ve bought in before out here.
Lvp flooring for the shed
Cheap stuff? Or match what’s going in the house?
@@MattBangsWood just a cheap stuff. U can get decent cheap lvp from home depot
What city is this?
are we allowed to ask what city or region in CA has homes at this price?
I'll give you a hint, this isn't CA. It's PNW.
Oregon?
K falls?
That was a garage not a shed . You must live in a poorer area ot the country to find a decent house so cheap. What is the lot line set back rules in the area?
By the time you renovate it. Would it be better to just invest in raw land and build new?
Likely not, $80K + $35K I'll have a $200K home. If I built new, my cost would be around $125-150/ft if self performing. I'd be $150K + permits ($5K) + utility hook ups ($8K in this area) + land cost.
I have lots here that I'll be building on in the near future.
@@MattBangsWoodWell if you got land at a good price and then built in an area where the homes are worth say that 500k to 800k. There has to be profit if your the builder. Especially when the value of homes has doubled right???
May I ask what state this is in? :)
Why can't you run it for more than 8 hours?
Whats up with michigan plates
Ford’s Rogue plant is in Michigan.
@@MattBangsWood u mean rouge plant lol. Im not far from it
Can you imagine all the 100+ year old silver coins just under the surface in thar yard? Who knows what was on that property before that house was built. Sigh………
Alright.. I'll dig it up.. haha
@@MattBangsWood Please, thank you! I’m dying to know.
By Groveland
Little further north. Might be a stretch.. I may board it myself, but I’d like to have tapers come in and make it good. Can you email me? MattBangsWood@gmail.com
What part of the country?
PNW
How do you find cheap houses to renovate?
I have areas that I’ve invested in over the years. I watch for ups and downs, just before the election there was a ton of uncertainty..
Running comparable sales with similar location, SF and newly renovated. This home remodeled with builder grade products puts it around $200K. We’re going to have the nicest windows money can buy, beautiful siding, nicest fascia board, etc.. I’d be happy with $200K still, but mid $2’s isn’t out of question.
Last few places I’ve bought were fire sales, people just wanted them gone.
Hey Mr. Matt, please where gloves to protect your body.
Bro could of used a sawzall
Landscaper doing demo? I might gift them one for Christmas.. I agree! I loaned them my Dewalt for a while.
Yeah, Sawzall all the way!
Polish
👍✌
Heya! Glad to see you!
How can we meet you in IBS?
We’ll be at World of Concrete and International Builders Show! Shoot me a message on Instagram, I typically post where I’ll be each day. Would love to meet up!
your camerawork is making seasick
Sorry, if I keep it still, people don't watch. If I move it around, 1-5 people say it makes them sick..
I’m a new sub Great job ! . Looking forward to seeing your work during this rebuild..renovation. 🔨🪚🪜💪
