Maskman has some pretty neat suit designs.
I mean, Auras and stuff aside, Meditation *is* effective and can help improve focus, reduce stress, and even dull pain through something like a self-inflicted placebo. And to be clear, these are things that have actually been studied and have actual scientific evidence to them.
But also its not like a Japanese show incorporating a prominent part of their spiritual and martial arts tradition is anymore misleading than garden variety magic.
X1's mask is actually based on the original planned Maskman design. It was suppose to resemble the helmets from Battle Fever J. Obviously they changed their minds.

I second this. Time Force was always my favorite as a kid. Time Ranger was the first Super Sentai I ever watched. Would love to see someone break them down and see the differences and similarities.
I would love to see a video covering Bioman, since that was originally going to be the first power rangers season by Saban, but the pilot was received poorly.
I was really looking forward to Pomelo Retro’s take on this series. Did not disappoint. 💯
As a 90’s kid from the Philippines, Maskman has a special place in my heart as it was my gateway to Super Sentai, strongly followed by Fiveman, Jetman, and Turboranger. This show made me a fan of the heroes in multi-coloured spandex and giant combining robots. While it has been a good part of my childhood, i do agree that the series itself has a lot of holes… although it paved the way to the tropes now synonymous with the super sentai franchise (i.e.: 5-pc robot, sixth ranger).
I quite liked the gendering of the suits using earrings - which they also did for Blue Dolphin of Liveman and Five Pink/Yellow of Fiveman. Personally, i wish they’d revisit this design… 😅
Trivia: Maskman was supposed to be Fiveman (hence 5-pc robot and the 5’s on the chest) before production decided to change the title card.
Also, Yellow Mask is the best Maskman! 😁 So glad he used the Yellow Mask suit for his avatar for this video..!

@@PomeloRetroYeah, another case like this was for Dynaman. It was supposed to be Baseball themed, but got turned into science themed instead. But the baseball suits stayed. 😅

It's good you mention at the start of each Super Sentai video that your Japanese isn't expert level because each video you post on your channel is someone's first video that they'll watch from you.
However, you're right about the engagement factor when taking into account the number of 'negative' comments you'll get!

Rewatching this video, I remembered why Prince/ss Igam was so hyper-fixated on defeating Red Mask - even going so far as to travel back in time to kill kid Takeru. 27:22
Takeru was the guy that made Princess Ial fall in love with him, making her side with the overground humans and betraying the Underground Tube Empire.
This brought further shame to the Igam Family, now headed by Prince/ss Igam, after Emperor Zeba usurped the throne - making him/her look like a traitor by association just by being Ial’s brother/sister…
Igam’s not completely bothered by the rest of the Maskmans because they were not a source of shame to their name…

Man Showa era sentai is such a trip as it was back then when all sentai tropes came to be.
I usually use these videos as a glimpse of what pre-MMPR super sentai are like.
I think Pluto and Shout Factory have some.

I've always really liked this series and I've liked that you've driven away from comparing Sentai to PR and just reviewing the Sentai season. I'm hoping you can start reviewing more recent season of PR and Sentai even if the half of the channel name is "Retro"

As a massive fan of super sentai, i watch your videos on it because i think your examination of the shows is really unique and interesting, its wonderful watching someone delve into the strange and wacky world of sentai and try to explain it to people who have never seen such craziness in a show before, personally i feel you are doing amazing work and i do hope to see you react to more of this strange series that is near and dear to so many
Actor fun fact, Sugata's actor was also in Takeshi's Castle as General Tani.
This was technically my first sentai series that I watched. This was aired locally in my country, Indonesia.

I started watching these just for a base understanding of the differences in story between Sentai and PR, but I almost like the strictly Sentia videos more now. Keep em' coming Fish!
I have been a Super Sentai fan, since Saban's adaptation of stock footage they combined of their Americanized production of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which would soon bring me to the real thing later on, which I find even better than my last experience through my childhood. I have nearly finished the first eleven entries of that original franchise along with the five others from the 1990's, which is about nearly a total of 16 in my experience. I have an exciting feeling that my childhood dream of watching the forgotten Super Sentai shows is at it's peak just three more and it's finally complete.
You've made me interested in the sentai counterparts especially Jetman. Don't stop cause these sentai are SO soap operaish. So its nice to have a lead in like you
I am someone who is a big fan of super sentai. While I'm not some who has seen every episode of every season, I've seen enough episodes and done enough wiki binges to formulate my own barebones opinion, at least when it comes to pre-Gokai seasons. However, I *love* watching these videos because I am always interested in other people's opinions and how their thoughts can shine new light on things i never thought about. And, while I will admit pronunciations occasionally irk me, as someone who is good a parroting words he hears, i completely understand everyone has their own brains. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on seasons that I've actually completed (Kyoryuger and ToQGer especially), and I can't wait to see what you do next. Keep rocking on, Matt!

Glad I found this channel. As a PR fan I’ve always been curious about Sentai, I’ve only ever watched the Dino Charge equivalent. But I always liked the suits for Maskman, so hearing what the show was about is really cool. Consider me subbed

I'm a long time sentai fan but I always enjoy your content, its good to get your views especially when you cover seasons I've not touched, I've not really looked at much prior to Zyuranger and I always felt maskmans looked cool, but maybe a bit put off now lol I never even once noticed the earrings on the females helmets when I've seen pictures. Great vid as always!
I'd recommend the episodes dedicated to Haruka. She's a good character in a mediocre series.

Do you think this could've made for a good Power Rangers season? The design of the suits is similar to the Zyuranger suits, they have the same colors, and they have a Zord for each member.
As always really enjoyed this. Had a real laugh at the Sass meter as well. I come into these extremely blind only knowing the US stuff so these journeys are well appreciated.

Why is having a superpower system based off a pseudoscience a bad thing? In the infinite multiverse of fiction anything is possible and often superpowers are used to define what a lot of people claim is real science. So if anything calling it a superpower just makes it all the less believable it could be a real science
It’s like trying to explain why a lot of heroes can just absorb radiation and get cool powers
Not trying to claim Auras are real just seems like an odd thing to get caught up on for a series that has even weirder explanations for powers and abilities

Breh, that was an awesome review!
Saw the entirety of Maskman at the beginning of this year alongside Liveman and Jetman. Lately, though, I grew to love Gingaman as my all-time favorite, even toppling those 3 (must be the "Peter Pan meets Tarzan, Zelda, The Last of the Mohicans, Princess Mononoke, and G Gundam" vibe).
Anyway, please do Timeranger next. I look forward to it as well as all other future projects. Cheers!

1: I have watched all the episodes of Maskman, and I do like most of the episodes.
2: Part of me wish the Maskman was the Super Sentai series to be adapted to Mighty Morphin because of the Martial Arts related things from Maskman.
3: Godai Doggler looks more like the Shredder than Earth Emperor Zeba.

Emperor Zeba looks like the love child of Captain Mutiny from Lost Galaxy/Gingaman and Shredder had a love child.
To be fair, they probably had at least two different version of the Yellow/Pink helmets and the fight/action ones don't have the earrings or have them taped down. It couldn't have been long before they were annoying. Probably flying off every other take when trying to fight.
Far as the source of powers are concerned, as long as the show is consistent, it almost doesn't matter on where the powers come from.

I mean, it's a show where they transform into color coded superheroes and use their powers to fight evil monsters who can grow big. I think it's fine to use some less than credible concepts in the show, if a kid grows up and still thinks auras are real then at that point it's on him.
Small nitpick on the aura thing - it's more rooted on Zen Buddhist principles than the bastardized crap peddled in the West as you mentioned
