It's always nice to hear an instructor promoting the use of a chipper or putter from off the green. Thank you!

I have the same chipper,. Its loft is actually between 9 iron and a pitching wedge..
It save me around 20 to 30 shots per game... I'm now consistently breaking 100..

I'm losing loads of shots chipping out of the rough on short chips around the green. A specific video on this topic would be so helpful to me 😊

This video and the one about what wedges we carry go hand-in-hand. I absolutely love these videos in particular. I carry a 50, 54, and 58. All lower bounce. I had always wanted to get fit, but never got around to it. The local golf shop i go to bought a new simulator and the owner let me use it for an hour one day to check the gaps in my clubs. I found out my biggest gap was between my pw and gw. Pw was carrying between 138 to 145. My gw was only carrying between 105 to roughly 112. Even after trying hitting lower flighted shots, the most carry I got was 118. This is generally my sw carry. Come to find out, the loft on my gw was at 52°. Bent it to 50° and adjusted the lie up 2°. Now, im consistently carrying 125 to 130ish. My point in all of this is that after I got my gaps tightened and my wedges fitted to me, I automatically dropped 3 to 4 shots per round. Now, I'm going to usethis video to work on 100 and in. Mark, thank you for this priceless information and taking the time to help the average golfer get better every time out. You are my #1 TH-cam golf instructor. Again, thank you!

For most of us amateurs the lob wedge is a dangerously seductive club. I have decided that I will only use it from bunkers or when I need to get over a hazard and stop quickly, anything else will be a lower lofted club, probably 50 degree or in some cases 9i

I don’t even have one. I have a 56° sand wedge but I use a 52° gap wedge for most chipping and pitching. A lob wedge is too prone to going right under the ball on a good lie and popping the ball 10’ in the air and 5’ forward. And on a tight lie they’re prone to thinning the shot right through the green.
I use the slot in my bag for a
3 iron I very rarely hit but carry on principle 😄

Unfortunately the fringes of the greens at my club are often like jungle, with the ball disappearing into it. Those are the times when I struggle

Break downs with gains and losses… Awesome… I’ve been using my 9 iron a lot for those shots along with the putter and I must say I definitely see the difference in the score cards. I feel like the only time when I get more loft on is when I know I have to go over something. Thanks for the drill Mark! This is so good…

I like to play the game with low med and high around the green with my 56 & 60. Def helps dial in the feels for each shot. Nice video

I carry a Ping ChipR and use it up to 100 metres depending on what is in front of me. These days I can’t hit greens in regulation most of the time so I chip on most holes. If I have to go over a bunker or stop the ball quickly I’ll use a wedge. The ChipR saves me 4 strokes or more a round on what I was shooting before.

When does the picking up the ball with your wedge (break 80 every time) video scheduled?

  • @timwhittles6414

De-lofting the club and punching a 7/8/9 iron as the go to shot certainly takes alot of pressure off. Or using any of those as a chipper shot always feels less likely to mess up. Rather consistently hit an 8 times out of 10 shot opposed to risking a 3 in 10 shot with the lob wedge.
Knowing my limits and playing percentages pays off for mid handicappers imo.

Out of curiosity, how you seen a measurable SG improvement in short game since putting the chipper in the bag?

The addition of the chipper as well as more forgiving wedges (cbx2) has definitely reduced my score. You still need to practice though. No club swings itself…yet lol

I think I could break 80 occasionally if I lost less balls/took fewer penalties off the tee.

People really just need to practice these short shots instead of trying to find their magic swing move on TH-cam and the driving range. It takes so much pressure off your long game if you can get up and down with anything resembling proficiency. Plus, short game actually helps you figure out strike for approach shots.

Practice? That’s a good one , most amateurs don’t know the meaning of the word practice.
