Dawn of the New World means the absolute world to me, in so many ways. I saw myself in Emil, being a timid, introverted teen with no friends, ridiculed for being who I am, and couldn't even look people in the eyes. I tended to look down a lot, instead of straight ahead. Any time I saw Emil second-guess himself, or show self-loathing, it always reflected onto how I saw myself, and helped me slowly break out of who I was and into who I wanted to be. While I didn't go on an adventure to save the world alongside a girlfriend and an army of monsters, courage definitely proved to hold the magic that my reality had been missing. While I enjoyed Tales of Symphonia when I played it, and am aware how it's a better title in many ways, I'll always love DotNW more for its characters, themes and execution. Thanks for this video.
Emil helped me realise that no matter who you are, everyone has the ability to become the person they want to be. All you need is a little bit of courage ^_^
The characters and themes are indeed amazing. Emil is one of my favorite protagonists in the series, in fact. I REALLY didn't like the gameplay, though.
I personally absolutely love Dawn of the New World. It was my first Tales game actually, as it came with this one thing my dad got that had a bunch of games on it, and I played it out of sheer curiosity. I loved Emil’s development the entire time, and although it wasn’t addressed, I loved Ratatosk’s development too. Ratatosk goes from being a complete, utter asshole, into less of an asshole. He starts off absolutely hating humanity, really only tolerating those around him, and in return he received that hatred in return. Yet, as he progresses, he maintains that hostility but it seems to diminish a bit. Up until the very end, when he finally came back, he says it himself, humanity isn’t that bad. The whole sealing away thing acted like somewhat of a way for him to cool down, and I personally like to think that he reflected during that time. Like Emil, he develops as well, and even Marta goes through development herself. She goes from clinging onto Emil and creating these high expectations for him believing he was the one that saved her in Palmacosta, but slowly starts to see him for who he is, and accepts him for that and respects him even more as his own person. Additionally, with Ratatosk, she starts treating him more like his own person, rather than treating him like Emil. She tries seeing past his anger and, although she doesn’t approve of his actions towards others, there’s some instances in which she even defends him. They all have their own developments in their own ways, and from what I’ve heard, the game is poorly translated too so that’s just from the bad translation! There’s a lot of content within the journals, and apparently the Japanese version takes those developments even deeper with things such as Marta having more respect for Emil and giving him space and respect. It’s a nice game, and I could make an entire list on the reasons why I like it, and this video perfectly states many of those reasons!
people tend to dislike DotNW due to it simply not being as good as the original, and not NEARLY living up to its quality. NEVER, however, does that make a game bad. I absolutely love this game, and I have more fun with the gameplay and highly appreciate the fact that they used the fact that there's only 2 main protags to flesh them out a bit more, having them start highly flawed, struggle and even distance from one another, until eventually reaching that satisfying climax. Also Tenebrae.
Fight me this is my favorite game ever made, I’ve played through it so much and I love the games monster system, I consider myself an expert with the system, in addition the cast of characters were also amazing, I love this game
You know, I'm glad that there are people who manage to enjoy it, (Fun fact:Dawn Of The New World is relatively popular in Japan) but if there is something that bothers me about the fans of the first game, it is that they often They are labeling the sequel as the worst of the worst, a game that should never have been a sequel and I understand that it was somewhat disappointing and not that good and most of their criticisms are understandable and in some I totally agree, but I think that people I'm exaggerating too much by throwing hate at the game, but let's be honest. ¿Did it seem inferior to its predecessor in terms of history?: Of course. ¿DID IT SEEM TO ME TO BE THE BIGGEST UNPLAYABLE ABERRATION EVER CREATED?: No, it did seem like an inferior game to the first and that it should not have been its sequel, but it also didn't seem like that unplayable garbage that they claimed so much about, in fact it doesn't even come close to being the same the worst jrpg in the history, in fact, it managed to entertain me quite a bit at times. Another thing that bothers me about the fans of the first symphonia is that they are ranting and belittling Emil left and right without taking into account all the trauma he went through, his uncles and everyone in Luin despised him from the moment he arrived, but the straw that broke the camel's back is that they say that because a protagonist is traumatized, is fearful, has anxiety that is a product of the abuse he suffered, is not brave or strong, he is automatically a "terrible protagonist", which already seems absurd and exaggerated to me, Emil, he does have a reason but the fans decided to ignore it in favor of calling him a "faggot" when the way Emil behaves is realistic for the circunstances of his situation of life, it is allowed that not everyone likes the game but I think they exaggerated with the Hate, personally, I consider Emil a good protagonist despite not being on the same level as Lloyd because he makes a good contrast with him and does not limit himself to be a lloyd 2.0. Finally, this comment has NO intention of wanting to offend the fans of the first Symphony, I simply wanted to express my opinion why I think they are exaggerating by throwing Hate at the sequel and not learning to value it for what it is and not for what it is. which necessarily must be.
This was an amazing video. you know I just finished DOTNW 4 months ago. And I started to respect the game for what is worth. I love Emil's character development. He can be so relatable to many people like him. I don't think he should be getting this much hate. Since Luke was also a character everyone didn't like in the beginning. but later on in the story accepted his actions and changed as a person. And everyone loved him. So I think Emil should deserves more love for at least the series trying something new for character like him.
The only problem that I have with Dawn of the new world is the Centurions being the "true" elemental gaurdians, not the Summon spirits. The reason that doesn't make sense is that the Summon Spirits were the one holding the two world's together for thousands of years. They retcon this when Tenebrae says they were just some monsters that just showed up. If they just left the Summon Spirits and just added Ratatosk. Or if they wanted to add the Centurions, they could of left them to only control monsters only, not controlling the mana as well instead of the Summon Spirits. I still enjoy the character moments, and I enjoy the character of Tenebrae, but the space he takes up in the overall plot just shoves the first games plot points aside and makes them pointless.
I still don't Dawn of the New World. There were some ideas I thought were cool but I felt the game was not taking advantage of it. The game as a whole also felt really slow and had a lot of highly questionable design choices like locking away crucial plot points behind sidequests and botching the mechanic of having monsters at your side. That being said, I respect the fact that you found quite a few things to love. And calling it a plague upon mankind would be a massive overexaggeration. No matter how opinions are sliced, the game is not a technical trainwreck.
i personally started playing tales of games because of this specific game and i just bought a wii and the game to play it again :). I am happy to say this game is still my favorite and i could'nt care less if people hate it. Because of this game i have also played tales of vesperia recently and i just enjoy all storylines from these kind of games.
Right like not to mention most places besides japan dont get many of these games so as long as its not a bad game overall who cares if its a not as good tales game. Not every final fantasy is good either but ive enjoyed them all. Cause overall they are all mostly good games. Maybe not a goof final fantasy game but still a good game. Same as this game. This got me into tales and i recently bought it for my wii u to play it again so i can beat the last quest that i never did before. Still havnt got invested in a tales games as much as this to beat them. Idk this story just gripped me a lot of the others remind to much of every other jrpg story. Guess thats why final fantasy x is my fave final fantasy too. Both thier stories are diff and not as paint by numbers for anime style stories like most.
@@GGA007Gaming Welp i already beat it now but still i enjoyed it a ton and will probably do it again since it's such a fun game with all the different monsters and battle strategies, however i've started playing tales of vesperia again on my ps4 since i also enjoy that one a real lot. I don't play Tales, but when I watched a Dawn of the New World playthrough, I didn't have any knowledge of the events in the first game, So I basically saw Symphonia's world through Emil and Marta's eyes. Not fully knowing what Lloyd was about.
dawn of the new world was my first tales of games, as for today i have played almost every single tales of game except for Hearts and Abyss, i even played narikiri dungeon and the mobile ones and i gotta say dawn of the new world is in my top 3. Number 1 being Tales Of Graces probably because i managed to play 100% of the game with 3 of my friends, Number 2 Tales of Vesperia and Number 3 DoNW. i dont want to write an article long about why i put DoNW above Symphonia so yeah. And yes, emil is one of the best characters in the franchise.
Hey!... First of all... I like your video! It was really well made! Keep up the good work! Second I complete DotNW... like twice... I was just disappointed about how it was a step down from the original Tales of Symphonia (My personal favorite tales game ever!) I was hoping for more... I can see that it was a good idea "what happened after the World regeneration, How everything unfold!" but it didn't deliver... After seeing it the way you say, it's actually not that bad! It's not about the world it's the story of Emil and I like Emil's development, I also like Marta as a character! but about the new characters they were so shallow... at least that's what I thought but then... WTF with that side quest! HOW ON EARTH you put so much background in THAT freaking side quest!!! But in the end, for the most part I agree with your perspective!... Its NOT Symphonia 2!... it's "Tales of Emil feat. Tales of Symphonia"!!!
I love DOTNW, it was my first tales game. I do however feel that there was wasted potential in the story: they could have explored Ratatosk"s character and motivations more as they directly link to the antagonist of the first game and the events of this game. He watched as the people of the ancient times destroy the world with their war, was moved by the words of Mithos and his companions only to be betrayed by them, wakes up thousands of years later to hear Aster and Richter give him a speech similar to what Mithos gave him, and saw through the eyes of Emil that the events of his time were being repeated. They could have worked with that to give the story and Ratatosk more depth.
I'm really attached to this game, even though I know it's not the best. DOTNW was one of my first console games (I only really played computer games) and first Tales games, and it really opened my eyes to the world of JRPGs. About the story, Emil's journey of self discovery and growth was really moving to me as a preteen, as I was in that same moment in my life. The character interaction moments were fun, and really helped humanize the party members to me. The world building was really good, seeing the aftermath of the original TOS and all the chaos created by it. The side quest system was really bad. I remember not even knowing about them and finding out years later that they existed online. It made me miss the character development of the side charas (and I really wanted that Richter sidequest fr). They story itself felt a bit clunky, like they had some amazing separate pieces, but didn't know how to conect them all together. I remember not liking Marta lol thinking that her feelings were superficial (yes I know that's part of her story/development, but preteen me still didn't like her). Overall, it's a 6/10 game. They had some great elements to work with, but they underutilized it/didn't know how to put them together. But yeah, people exagerate when they say it's TERRIBLE. It's not like that at all.
Nothing will stop me from destroying the basement in search of wii peices so I can play this game again. Even if it's bad, nostalgia will throw me through the game.
Dawn of the new world was my first tales game, and I loved it, lloyd actually being my favorite character. Going back to the first game and him just being Robin was infuriating 😂
Tenebre is the best character (except for Richter, genuinely love him and made a DnD character based off him). Constantly hilarious and actually intresting.
I did not like the main characters initially. I did appreciate the character growth and the way the last battle was done. I don't think I have yet to have a battle in the same way.
I admire your effort in this video, also speaking of universally hated games, seeing the Spirit Tracks minimap used like that was a nice touch! I will still argue that Emil doesn't really grow at all through out the story though. He stays pretty whiny through the end, and most of the character growth he should have gone through kind of was structured through Ratastokr. Emil grows in the sense he learns to harden his resolve though.
I think the craziest thing about this was that around the time this was uploaded I wanted to try and make a video essay as well about the literal same topic. Holy moly Dunno if I'll ever get to it since you've nailed a lot of good points, but you're a trooper regardless chief
i really would've loved if this game wouldn't have been set just 2 years after TOS, but instead in a near future? We could've still gotten up to speed about how the world got to a period of climatic chaos and tension due to the vanguard. But maybe if it was a little farther in the future it would feel more fresh and wouldn't rely all that much on the previous characters. Imagine if all this had happened after all the lifespan of the pain cast except for Raine and Genis due to them being long-lived half-elves, and then having the two of them join your for a while, fill you in on context and offer guidance. I think that would've been pretty great. I replayed DOTNW very recently and still hold it very dear despite its flaws and my inconditional love for the first game
You have a point that effort was put into the characters in this game, but it doesn't help much when so much in the game's design is just bad. Saying it's development was led by inexperienced people doesn't excuse the bad result, it just gives an explanation for it. A story in a game isn't all the game is and it feels like you're only trying to warrant the story here, which is kind of a subjective point, but I think you're mostly in the right; it can be a good story if you go out of your way and engross yourself into all the characters. To be fair, this game would be better if it didn't include the other ToS characters. Just be a story about Emil and Martha and the other new characters. It doesn't even need to be a game at all. A visual novel could actually be the best medium.
From what I saw and experience, those who played the game without knowing what the game was about seem to really love it while those who had experiences with the franchise before mostly dislike it. And since it's a sequel, most people would play the original first, making this kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy by fans.
You know, it's odd DotNW is definitely my least favorite Tales game (at least from what I've played so far) but I still think i gets too much hate Though I think the main reason why that is is because most of my problems are gameplay-related, while the story is just pretty great. The sidequests are pretty dumb though As for the video itself, I liked a lot of the visual flairs, but I didn't really like the "bubble(?)" overlay throughout the entire video. I think it didn't really add anything and just made some of the footage you were showing really hard to see. The script was pretty solid though
dawn of the new world my second favorite game in the series after abyss im someone that tried to play symphonia way after its release (first time i played both it and dawn of the new world was when they released on ps3 lol) but could never get into it because of the extremely outdated battle system and the constant puzzles while not as epic as what is in my opinion the other two of the big three tales of games (abyss and vesperia and in my opinion the only three good tales of games) character and story wise its way more fun to actually play than both combined lol little remake to the end of the video i never thought it was bad symphonia though on the other hand you would have an extremely hard time convincing me thats a good game or to ever even get my to try to actually finish it unless its remade with the same battle system of abyss and vesperia lol
Why great games ended to have this types of flaw?! Its ridiculous! Another game that suffers from this design AND MORE! Is Final Fantasy X-2, oh god, why
Honestly i hated how people say it was a bad game cuz it wasn’t the same storyline or how it didn’t left off from the original. Dawn of a new world is bassically emils story in the new world if it was a second symphonia game to the original im pretty sure it would have been called symphonia 2 not dawn of the new world i love danw of the new world and lets the honest the graphics are way better atleast lloyd and the others look like there age instead of looking like cringy 3 year olds dressing up the voices are way better since in battle there voices feel more realistic they have feeling in there viice when saiying artes unlike in symphonia 1 were it sounds like the characters dont even care and just are bored saiying the names of there artes sounding like emos in the first game the artes for me there voices in battle like had no emotions to it just blank
A friend I had put it best: Dawn of the New World is basically like fan fiction. There were things I liked, with the setting taking place after everything from ToS and thought expanding it was cool, and I liked most of the new characters, even Emil, watching his character become something good. However, I share the same views as most, with the monster catching/battles and the under-utilizing of the ToS cast, but the thing that annoyed me the fucking most was Marta. She, in fact, did get on my nerves and the game just kept pushing her on me; I just wish she wasn’t so fucking clingy.
Dawn of the New World means the absolute world to me, in so many ways.

I really liked the story and the Characters in Symphonia 2, my only problem with it was the giant reuse of the same dungeons on their sidequests
Right, they could have spiced things up but yeah, the whole resources problem again.
DotNW was the first Tales game I remember playing with my brother. Glad to have experienced both this and the original Symphonia.
This was my first tales game so it has a special place in my heart lol
Tenebre is the best character (except for Richter, genuinely love him and made a DnD character based off him).
Constantly hilarious and actually intresting.
I did not like the main characters initially. I did appreciate the character growth and the way the last battle was done. I don't think I have yet to have a battle in the same way.
My favorite part about talss of symphonia dawn of the new world is the fact that you can have monsters in your party💯
Dawn of the New World taken at face value was a good story about a boi gaining courage.
Game also has the amazing track, Wilderness of Sadness
Ooh,this would definitely have been a game I played back when I was younger.
This is a good video on this game.
Nah i think he becomes less whiny over the story.
I think the craziest thing about this was that around the time this was uploaded I wanted to try and make a video essay as well about the literal same topic. Holy moly
Dunno if I'll ever get to it since you've nailed a lot of good points, but you're a trooper regardless chief
Thank you ^_^
If you want to make it then go for it dude! The world can never have enough Tales of content.
This game was so fun, I never finished because Richter is on steroids from hell, literally.
You just gotta spam healing items.
Buy 20 melon, lemon and pineapple gel before going in.
Use your C attack to break Richters spells last minute.
i really would've loved if this game wouldn't have been set just 2 years after TOS, but instead in a near future? We could've still gotten up to speed about how the world got to a period of climatic chaos and tension due to the vanguard. But maybe if it was a little farther in the future it would feel more fresh and wouldn't rely all that much on the previous characters. Imagine if all this had happened after all the lifespan of the pain cast except for Raine and Genis due to them being long-lived half-elves, and then having the two of them join your for a while, fill you in on context and offer guidance. I think that would've been pretty great. I replayed DOTNW very recently and still hold it very dear despite its flaws and my inconditional love for the first game
now Thats what im talking about boy.
I also thought this game was not bad either!;) I'm glad I played it!;)
You have a point that effort was put into the characters in this game, but it doesn't help much when so much in the game's design is just bad.
Red-haired characters is broken amd relatable(...most of the time... I'm looking at you Mary and Rose!)
i love the monster tamming in the game wish they put it in new tales game.
You know, it's odd
DotNW is definitely my least favorite Tales game (at least from what I've played so far) but I still think i gets too much hate
Though I think the main reason why that is is because most of my problems are gameplay-related, while the story is just pretty great. The sidequests are pretty dumb though
As for the video itself, I liked a lot of the visual flairs, but I didn't really like the "bubble(?)" overlay throughout the entire video. I think it didn't really add anything and just made some of the footage you were showing really hard to see. The script was pretty solid though
Have you played neikaraki deugeon x on the psp?
Can you do a solo review video explaining why you're annoyed at Marta?
Sheena is attractive so I like it :)
dawn of the new world my second favorite game in the series after abyss im someone that tried to play symphonia way after its release (first time i played both it and dawn of the new world was when they released on ps3 lol) but could never get into it because of the extremely outdated battle system and the constant puzzles while not as epic as what is in my opinion the other two of the big three tales of games (abyss and vesperia and in my opinion the only three good tales of games) character and story wise its way more fun to actually play than both combined lol
little remake to the end of the video i never thought it was bad symphonia though on the other hand you would have an extremely hard time convincing me thats a good game or to ever even get my to try to actually finish it unless its remade with the same battle system of abyss and vesperia lol
Good video!
Why great games ended to have this types of flaw?! Its ridiculous!
Another game that suffers from this design AND MORE! Is Final Fantasy X-2, oh god, why
14:54 Yo! That's Monogatari's ost!!! Do you watch Monogatari?!!!
Hell yeah I do. I've watched Bakemonogatari and I loved it. Such an admospheric and trippy anime it was.
I don't even remember this game tbh. Hated the new characters though. Haha
Lol I feel the same, this was my fav one almost
Is the Tales of leak true?
I'm not sure. At first I thought it looked too good to be Tales but now that new screenshots have appeared, maybe it might be true after all
@@Solgilou If it's true dang and if it's not true that's a good troll.
It not good game, not worse nor the best gsmes
It's bad.
