Kratos' real identity was spoiled to me, but I had no clue about the background. First playthrough he came across as condescending but reluctantly helpful (and I did not get the amount of hype my brother had in this guy). Watching this after that though, I can 100% feel how he's struggling to cope and trying not to lose face. All that completely whooshed over my head on my first playthrough.
No. I was 14 and this was my first RPG. I did a recent play through with my GF (who's 25) and she went "He's Lloyd's dad" as soon as he reacted to hearing Lloyd's name.
When cooking, both Lloyd and Kratos HATE using tomatoes, they do poorly with any meal that requires them, and never add them as a side ingredient. Which is a really, really cool detail most players will never pick up on! I love Symphonia's attention to detail like this...
Dawn of the New World was my introduction to the Tales series, and I didn't realize that there was a Tales of Symphonia 1 until I randomly saw it in EbGames/Gamestop and saw Lloyd on the cover and mentally screamed "YOU KILLED EMIL'S PARENTS!" before buying the game and proceeding to be blown away.
Kvar's interactions with Kratos are so twisted. He knows Kratos can't respond to his taunts the way he wants to (lest he blow his cover), and he takes full advantage of that. What a sick, demented man.
That's so true! I vividly remember being frustrated that Kratos would stop attacking just to go " don't overdo it... First Aid! ", I even turned off his healing skills just so he could be more offensive. Looking back, yeah, I think his healing was focused on Lloyd more. In a way, I can see myself turning off First Aid as Lloyd angrily telling him to stop the healing, which makes me feel guilty but is also a really nice detail Many, I love this game!

I bet he wanted to say all that stuff in the past, but never had a chance to say it since Kratos could've shout his mouth instantly, but in this occasion, he needed to maintain his status as a secret so going full on won't be an option
in the gamecube version , when you first encounter kratos and he asks if his name was lloyd, kratos's lip animation still moves before he starts to speak again, i always thought it was because he was silently mumbling to himself.
i really love the subtle detail that everytime there is a cutscene (at the beggining of the game) that includes kratos, Noishe is always standing next to him !
Yuan spelled it out. Kvar gave you the whole essay. Kratos tries to keep his identity a secret, but he lets too much dialogue slip that the player understands after key events.
You ended the Botta and Kratos scene in the Asgard Ranch too early. Lloyd follows Botta, Colette follows Lloyd, then Kratos eyes the duo before following suit. Colette ends up in front of Lloyd along with Kratos when the Mages open the door and attack. Kratos doesn't even attempt to protect Colette from the oncoming attack, instead he uses Guardian in front of Lloyd. His entire role as Colette's bodyguard should of been protecting her he could of easily tackled her and himself out of the way which would put Lloyd in danger but instead he uses Guardian to prevent the attack from hitting Lloyd. This also shows to that he is aware of Colette's Angel Transformation preventing her from feeling pain, despite her only telling Lloyd. Another one you missed is Kratos telling Colette to count the Stars and how no Human in a single lifespan can count them all. He would be amply aware of this since he has been counting the stars in the sky for centuries.
a small detail that i noticed this time that im playing it again is that they literally have the same eye colour and shape from the skit portraits it's so cool to see all these details and foreshadowing, even shown in the characters' designs (and seeing kratos' design now how even his outfit looks like he has wings haha) man, tos is just such an amazing game
When I suspected they were father and son I was trying to see a resemblance and I noticed their eye shape is the same, but Kratos' eye colour is a little redder. When they feel ashamed they both look off to the side in the same way though. And sit the same way. They both stand resting their hand on their sword, but Lloyd puts more of his weight to one side (suggesting he's more casual). Kratos' outfit always reminded me of a beetle opening it's wings
Also forgot to include: When leaving iselia and heading to the Iselia Ranch for the first time, Noishe wanders into the village. Lloyd asks Noishe why he was heading into the village. Genis (to Lloyd): he was probably looking for you. Lloyd: You think so? This is also explained in the Restless Noishe skit that you also showed, but just builds it up a little.
Also, the first night when everyone is at Lloyd's house, when Kratos is near Anna's grave, Noishe is in his pen, agitated. Lloyd tells him he can't come out of his pen because it's night time. And Noishe is trying to say there's someone he wants to see, or meet, I can't remember the exact wording Lloyd uses. But Lloyd tells him he can do it tomorrow. Edited for misspelled word.
I know this is a much smaller point, and I'm probably reading too much into it, when Genis took the quiz against that one guy, and everyone else took it too, Kratos scored in the mid to upper 300s, he is much smarter than one would expect for a common mercenary.
10:19 - The first time I played this game and got this, I didn't think much about it at the time, figuring it was a random. Seeing this video and watching it again right after what Kvar said makes more sense now.
I feel bad for Kratos. Regal got to have a quick chat with Alicia again after all those years because she managed to stick around as an exsphere ghost, but Anna? Nope.
I remember in the animation, Anna would talk to Lloyd through his exsphere. Idk if that's an actual Canon thing or a detail the game didn't include but I did find that pretty neat too.
I think the most telling part was after the battle with Kratos (I think it’s been like 18 years or so for me since I played) where Yggdrasill says to Kratos something along the lines of ‘so even you couldn’t bring yourself’ to fight such an opponent.
The foreshadowing I like better is knowing that when the Renegades attack the temple, trying to prevent the chosen from getting the cruxis crystal, one of the Renegades laughs at being called a Desian. And says to die at the hands of the Desians they so hate. Basically admitting they aren’t Desians.

You know, this could easily have been that Kratos knew and was friends with Lloyd's father when he questions at the gravestone. He asks if Lloyd's father is alive as if he could be searching for him. They could've easily went that route and Lloyd's father being a great man that died doing what he could. And Kratos just trying to avenge his friend. Thanks for making this! I like how it only goes up to the roost point.
My initial thought was that Kratos knew Lloyd's father and was responsible in some way for Anna and Lloyd's situation. He really jumped into the role of father to Lloyd but he seemed too young(haha) to actually be his father. It wasn't until we were introduced to the idea that a person could stop aging that I became 90% sure that Kratos was his dad.
The entire scene with meeting Yuan just confused me, the second time around after I found out blew my mind Edit: I just noticed that at 0:58 Kratos says Anna before Lloyd mentions her name now that I think about it Dirk and Lloyd probably didn’t know her name cause she died before she could tell them
I think Kratos used that opportunity to say her name aloud. Dirk says that when he found Anna and Lloyd, Anna told him everything. Which I'm guessing wasn't a lot, but was at least her name.
I think he did voice some new lines for Lloyd in the remake of the game. But I agree, I very much preferred him as Lloyd's voice actor, since he did a great job capturing all of his emotions
There is the one scene after the first Sheena encounter, where after the fight the party attempts to understand who Sheena is, and why she's after Colette. There's a moment where Kratos says "there are always those who reject salvation" whilst the camera cuts to his legs, thus giving him an intense and imposing emotion to his words. As if he kinda broke character and snapped a little with his, at that time, disposition towards those who are going against his plans and the plans of Mythos and the Cruxis.
You know, I noticed none of these when I played the game for the first time. I'm now a quarter of my way through the second run on Mania, and before watching I can tell you there are a lot of moments that foreshadowed Kratos's identity, which made me love the game all the more.
Fun Fact: Not sure how well this is known, but you can get Kratos to rejoin your party post betrayal in Zelos's stead. If you complete the side quests and talking to Kratos at Flanoir, Zelos, will betray you when you go to rescue Collette, you kill him, then after being down a party member for a while, Kratos will rejoin your party. Not the intended way to play the game, but I like Kratos more than Zelos so it was an easy choice.
OMG I just replayed the game and was SO confused bc I vividly remembered that storyline but while I was replaying, I really wanted Zelos to stay with my team... I was happy and confused at the same time when Zelos stayed with my team to the end and I didn't have to kill him off. I just thought my memories were wrong so thanks for that clearup
The whole deal with Kvar has me rolling over and screaming. The thing is, he knows who Kratos is. He knows that's Lloyd's father, he probably knows that's an angel, and he still has the audacity to talk shit to the man's face like Kratos wasn't going to take any opportunity presented to murder the man who made Anna's death a necessity.
The foreshadowing was so thick, that when I first played the game I thought "Nah, they CAN'T be insinuating what I think they're insinuating. Is it really THIS unsubtle?" But then again, that's part of the charm of this game, and it's at least somewhat self-aware of that ham. Still, this game has a ton of other foreshadowing moments that I felt were very masterfully done. They were the more, "blink and you'll miss it" parts of the dialogue. Overall, Kratos excluded, Tales of Symphonia was when I truly realized that gaming was reaching an elevation from cheap entertainment to a literary art form.
In Luin after you visit the Asgard Ranch, Kratos says: "Didn't you say you weren't going to hesitate anymore?" Choose to answer: "No!" and you will see this scene later. It increases affection for Kratos.

It's because he has a role to play, he might be planning on betraying Mithos with the Mana Cannon but as it stands it's not ready so he can't say that Kratos did the deed, else he face Mithos' Judgement. He is also a Half-Elf Desian who see Humans as less then worms, Kratos might be a higher ranking member of Cruxis but he is still a Human who betrayed Mithos once before so he's going to trash talk him.
guys i need help ; i have the memories of a scene, where kratos suggest to infiltrate the human ranche with their secret passage ; then raine (i think) replied with a ; "how do you know that there is a secret passage in that human ranche"; then Kratos panicked and said something like "i... remmember seing a rocks that was hidding something on our first visit". then neil (probably) replied ; yes i remember seing that too. or something like that. it is a really confused memory in my mind, and i think it is from the game, im not sure at all, maybe it was from the animation but i need to know where was this (it's the part of the game where you need to inflitrate a second time a human ranche that you didn't destroy, i can't remember wich one)
Just watched a full playthrough of the game. This happens when they are helping the guy who escaped from the ranch and is telling the party about having a message for the chosen and how to sneak in.
ironically it took the scene in hima for me to fully realize that he really was the father of the main character. before that, I was wavering about him being a family friend or the real thing. I had already seen the anime years before playing the game and the details weren't as fresh.
I'll be honest back when this game was new and rpgs didn't saturate the market, i didn't see this coming. It's kinda shame nearly 20 years later and I find it hard to get an rpg with an original compleling storyline with unexpected twist. Persona 5 did a great job for myself though.

I dont get the point that noone of the five grand-cardinals knows about Kratos's face and identity. He is Lord Kratos - one of the four serpahim, almost same in charge of Cruxis as Yggdrassil is and most likely gave orders in some projectors to their subordinates. This is really really hard to belive. Espcially over 4000 years and thorugh all generations of their subordinates and companios along. ...And Kratos Met Anna after 4k years? What a strange co-incidendce he could have had many wifes and seen them all pass away. In the Flanoir Scene Kratos tells Lloyd how Kvar attacked Anna and Kratos. How the hell its possible noone knows about it? Thats the only thing absolutely not making sense.
@@lowkeyzut I always assumed that Colette's presence was related, as well. The Desians are technically not allowed to harm or kill the Chosen. Kvar probably put two and two together and figured that Kratos was escorting Colette under Yggdrasil's orders, and likely feared the repercussions of blowing the man's cover. So Kvar played along, pretended not to know him, but could not resist the power he suddenly wielded over Kratos. You know, the man who'd beat him up and had thwarted his plans to use the Angelus Project to rise in the ranks. Add to it his inherent hatred for all humans, and here we are. Thank you for sharing this video by the way! There are a few scenes I still hadn't seen before, so that's awesome.
I don't think much of the five grand cardinals have much knowledge on Cruxis besides Pronyma who leads the five grand cardinals and works alongside Mithos, I think this was sort-of explained after Lloyd and co are saved by the Renegades at the Tower. The 4 seraphim also seem to operate independently unless called upon, which is why you would encounter Kratos traveling throughout Tethe'Alla while Yuan is out running Renegades operations. Of course, maybe Kratos just ain't wearing his usual Cruxis gear so they don't realize who he is but kind of partially recognize him lmao.
aside from Kvar and Pronma the Grand Cardinels didn't have any idea what was going on. "There was no order to eliminate the Chosen was there?" Magnius certainly had no idea about it and just did what he was told. and Rodyle just didn't care anyway because he was too busy planning to betray them with the Mana Cannon anyway
Kratos pretty much stayed on Derris Kharlan for much of the time until Mithos started his 'age of lifeless beings' plan, then Kratos left Mithos and went to live on Sylvarant where he met Anna. Not that that means he couldn't have had other wives, but it seems like he didn't invest in life outside of Derris Kharlan until he left Mithos.
I forget the exact phrasing, but search something along the lines of "Tales of Symphonia unabridged timeline" and you'll get it. It's like 7 hours long lol.
I will always love this game, but I’m realizing now that I never noticed the dialogue/music audio balancing issues in cutscenes until now. Hope the remastered version coming next year addresses this.

Just because the software had limitations doesn’t mean the writer’s imagination did. Kratos had to be my favourite father character.

My initial thought was that Kratos knew Lloyd's father and was responsible in some way for Anna and Lloyd's situation. He really jumped into the role of father to Lloyd but he seemed too young(haha) to actually be his father. It wasn't until we were introduced to the idea that a person could stop aging that I became 90% sure that Kratos was his dad.

I think Kratos used that opportunity to say her name aloud. Dirk says that when he found Anna and Lloyd, Anna told him everything. Which I'm guessing wasn't a lot, but was at least her name.

I think he did voice some new lines for Lloyd in the remake of the game. But I agree, I very much preferred him as Lloyd's voice actor, since he did a great job capturing all of his emotions
14:49 Huh, so Mithos broke his original pact with the summon spirits. That would explain why Sheena was able to get all the summons on her side.
There is the one scene after the first Sheena encounter, where after the fight the party attempts to understand who Sheena is, and why she's after Colette. There's a moment where Kratos says
"there are always those who reject salvation" whilst the camera cuts to his legs, thus giving him an intense and imposing emotion to his words. As if he kinda broke character and snapped a little with his, at that time, disposition towards those who are going against his plans and the plans of Mythos and the Cruxis.
You know, I noticed none of these when I played the game for the first time. I'm now a quarter of my way through the second run on Mania, and before watching I can tell you there are a lot of moments that foreshadowed Kratos's identity, which made me love the game all the more.

Fun Fact: Not sure how well this is known, but you can get Kratos to rejoin your party post betrayal in Zelos's stead. If you complete the side quests and talking to Kratos at Flanoir, Zelos, will betray you when you go to rescue Collette, you kill him, then after being down a party member for a while, Kratos will rejoin your party. Not the intended way to play the game, but I like Kratos more than Zelos so it was an easy choice.
OMG I just replayed the game and was SO confused bc I vividly remembered that storyline but while I was replaying, I really wanted Zelos to stay with my team... I was happy and confused at the same time when Zelos stayed with my team to the end and I didn't have to kill him off. I just thought my memories were wrong so thanks for that clearup

The whole deal with Kvar has me rolling over and screaming. The thing is, he knows who Kratos is. He knows that's Lloyd's father, he probably knows that's an angel, and he still has the audacity to talk shit to the man's face like Kratos wasn't going to take any opportunity presented to murder the man who made Anna's death a necessity.

I noticed all of this when i play the game again, it was so interesting
The foreshadowing was so thick, that when I first played the game I thought "Nah, they CAN'T be insinuating what I think they're insinuating. Is it really THIS unsubtle?" But then again, that's part of the charm of this game, and it's at least somewhat self-aware of that ham. Still, this game has a ton of other foreshadowing moments that I felt were very masterfully done. They were the more, "blink and you'll miss it" parts of the dialogue. Overall, Kratos excluded, Tales of Symphonia was when I truly realized that gaming was reaching an elevation from cheap entertainment to a literary art form.
I have beaten this game dozens of times over the course of years, and yet I have never seen the scene at 11:51 before.
In Luin after you visit the Asgard Ranch, Kratos says: "Didn't you say you weren't going to hesitate anymore?" Choose to answer: "No!" and you will see this scene later. It increases affection for Kratos.

I don't understand why Kvar talks about Kratos killing Anna as if he doesn't realize that Kratos is right there in front of him. Kvar was there, he should know Kratos' face
It's because he has a role to play, he might be planning on betraying Mithos with the Mana Cannon but as it stands it's not ready so he can't say that Kratos did the deed, else he face Mithos' Judgement. He is also a Half-Elf Desian who see Humans as less then worms, Kratos might be a higher ranking member of Cruxis but he is still a Human who betrayed Mithos once before so he's going to trash talk him.

guys i need help ; i have the memories of a scene, where kratos suggest to infiltrate the human ranche with their secret passage ; then raine (i think) replied with a ; "how do you know that there is a secret passage in that human ranche"; then Kratos panicked and said something like "i... remmember seing a rocks that was hidding something on our first visit". then neil (probably) replied ; yes i remember seing that too. or something like that. it is a really confused memory in my mind, and i think it is from the game, im not sure at all, maybe it was from the animation but i need to know where was this (it's the part of the game where you need to inflitrate a second time a human ranche that you didn't destroy, i can't remember wich one)
Just watched a full playthrough of the game. This happens when they are helping the guy who escaped from the ranch and is telling the party about having a message for the chosen and how to sneak in.

ironically it took the scene in hima for me to fully realize that he really was the father of the main character. before that, I was wavering about him being a family friend or the real thing. I had already seen the anime years before playing the game and the details weren't as fresh.

I'll be honest back when this game was new and rpgs didn't saturate the market, i didn't see this coming.
It's kinda shame nearly 20 years later and I find it hard to get an rpg with an original compleling storyline with unexpected twist. Persona 5 did a great job for myself though.
Tales of Berseria has some great plottwists too.

I dont get the point that noone of the five grand-cardinals knows about Kratos's face and identity. He is Lord Kratos - one of the four serpahim, almost same in charge of Cruxis as Yggdrassil is and most likely gave orders in some projectors to their subordinates. This is really really hard to belive. Espcially over 4000 years and thorugh all generations of their subordinates and companios along.
...And Kratos Met Anna after 4k years? What a strange co-incidendce he could have had many wifes and seen them all pass away.
In the Flanoir Scene Kratos tells Lloyd how Kvar attacked Anna and Kratos.
How the hell its possible noone knows about it? Thats the only thing absolutely not making sense.
@@lowkeyzut I always assumed that Colette's presence was related, as well. The Desians are technically not allowed to harm or kill the Chosen. Kvar probably put two and two together and figured that Kratos was escorting Colette under Yggdrasil's orders, and likely feared the repercussions of blowing the man's cover.
So Kvar played along, pretended not to know him, but could not resist the power he suddenly wielded over Kratos. You know, the man who'd beat him up and had thwarted his plans to use the Angelus Project to rise in the ranks. Add to it his inherent hatred for all humans, and here we are.

I don't think much of the five grand cardinals have much knowledge on Cruxis besides Pronyma who leads the five grand cardinals and works alongside Mithos, I think this was sort-of explained after Lloyd and co are saved by the Renegades at the Tower. The 4 seraphim also seem to operate independently unless called upon, which is why you would encounter Kratos traveling throughout Tethe'Alla while Yuan is out running Renegades operations. Of course, maybe Kratos just ain't wearing his usual Cruxis gear so they don't realize who he is but kind of partially recognize him lmao.
Kvar certainly knows who he is, but was (probably) given orders not to blow his cover.
aside from Kvar and Pronma the Grand Cardinels didn't have any idea what was going on. "There was no order to eliminate the Chosen was there?" Magnius certainly had no idea about it and just did what he was told. and Rodyle just didn't care anyway because he was too busy planning to betray them with the Mana Cannon anyway
Kratos pretty much stayed on Derris Kharlan for much of the time until Mithos started his 'age of lifeless beings' plan, then Kratos left Mithos and went to live on Sylvarant where he met Anna.
Not that that means he couldn't have had other wives, but it seems like he didn't invest in life outside of Derris Kharlan until he left Mithos.

I will always love this game, but I’m realizing now that I never noticed the dialogue/music audio balancing issues in cutscenes until now. Hope the remastered version coming next year addresses this.
