John Mayer guitars are always awesome. Looking at them side by side it's like color t.v.. or black and white, both interesting, both have their place ❤
Great review. "I hear a difference..." Really? Then I put my hearing aids in and came to the positive conclusion: mmm, maybe. IMHO the finish is quite nice. Thanks guys!
I agree that the video doesn't seem to show much difference in tone - but I truly did hear a difference in my lap! Maybe my ears weren't fully caffeinated yet? Thanks as always for watching!
They should sound the same, but the natural finished OMJM sounded significantly better to me. I think that’s just how these things go: take five of the same guitars and they will all sound different. In this case, if I would just pretend I had the money to buy one (which I definitely would), I would still choose the grey burst anniversary model, just because it’s so unbelievably beautiful!!!!! I also really appreciate the fact that Martin doesn’t charge extra for a limited run of a custom colored guitar. Of course I can be appreciative all I want, but unfortunately it doesn’t change the fact that I can’t afford a guitar like this. 😅 Don’t feel sorry for me. I have a handful of really wonderful guitars. And if I really wanted to I could sell two of them and buy this beauty. Actually, I would consider selling my most expensive one, plus one of my more expensive electrics, or a somewhat cheaper electric plus a bunch of pedals. If that was a serious option I think I would go for it. But unfortunately it takes time to sell stuff. And there aren’t many places to go to and find the best out of three of those grey ones. Aaaaaaaaaah whatever, WTF am I even thinking?!?! But you know…, it’s ideas like this that drive me crazy and lose me a lot of sleep. Been there many times. O no, here I go again. 😰
even with special editions like this one, it takes time before they raise in value and used they even sell under retail if you find one. so because you're saying that selling takes time...I think you got 1-2 years atleast, if you truely want this guitar.
@ : Thanks! I understand and appreciate what you’re saying. But this is just how my mind works. If I’m really honest, I think there’s only one guitar I would sell any of my current guitars for and that guitar would be a good Gibson SJ-200. Another step might be to buy a good LG-2, play it for a while, see how it combines with the other guitars I own and THEN decide which guitars to sell (if any). 😊
Ok - so I’m biased as I own the 20th OMJM. But, the 20th sounds slightly louder and definitely more dynamic to me. Dunno if the standard had new strings on it? I spent 3 months travelling to loads of different stores, trying out hundreds of different acoustics and the OMJM 20th anniversary was the one I went for. Don’t regret it at all
It's weird they went with the simple dovetail instead of the standard compound dovetail. Was the original 20 years ago a mortise and tenon neck joint? When I'm paying that much, I would definitely want the compound dovetail, but I'm also not the target audience.
I think the 20th anniversary would look better if the back, sides neck also had a color treatment. It throws me off seeing a Grey top on a normal wood back sides and neck. Otherwise, I like the top.
They’re identical in spec… the only difference is the finish .. both engleman, both select hardwood neck, same bracing, etc
And then what happened?
They are both amazing instruments, we need to cherish our great instrument builders just as much as the songs our heroes sing
So glad I got to check out OMJM and other Martins at your shop before buying the Yamaha FS9 R, which I really love.
Yamaha Guitars are my favorite. You made a great choice.
Well said

I do like the voice of the 20th Anniversary model. I may call, see which one sounds better. Thanks, Quinton and Paul.
Can't say I'm down with the space age grey top. I think I even like the tone on the natural top, too.
I thought the same. Much more impressive in person. Looks nice.
Agree
I have an LS6 that I love. The OMJM looks good.
Both Engelmann tops, as specified by JM
Both have engelmann spruce
The grey is cleaner and brighter sound but who chose the colour and why .
Got my OM finally…well I could have gotten other fancier model fr other brands but I was busy…now retired…maybe a Santa Cruz or Collings etc❤

The gray one would look better in a black and white video.
A wonderful guitar with a extraordinary price

Why did Martin / Mayer choose to go with a simple dovetail neck joint instead of Martin’s normal complex dovetail for a guitar of this level?
Engelmann spruce added a higher cost so simple dovetail was done to keep the price down.
@@batman48195 I think I’d be willing to pay for the more traditional neck joint.
Simple dove tail is easier to mass produce
Uhmm, natural sitka spruce top please, and Thank you .
Both are Engelmann spruce.
I love the sound of the anniversary edition, but that finish color …. BLEAH.
The OM JM have always had Engelmann spruce. The OOO EC has Sitka.
That 20th anniversary edition looks like dirty dishwater. I hate the look.
Well, that's one ugly guitar 😂😂😂
Agreed. I thought it would grow on me. But when side by side with a normally toned guitar; it looks fucked
This Englemann soundboard sounds warmer than the Sitka top. They both sound quite nice.
They both have Engelmann. I'm surprised they don't know that.
@@redson425 Thank you for clarifying. I was just going off the description and dialogue.
