  • K. Penderecki Symphony No. 7 'The seven gates of Jerusalem' for five soloists, narrator, three choirs and orchestra. Penderecki composed his seventh symphony in 1996 to commemorate the third millennium of the conquest of Jerusalem. According to the sacred story, King David conquered Jerusalem around 1000 BC, making it the capital of Israel. His writing began in the spring of 1996, which continued during the following summer and autumn at his house in Lusławice, alternating with his concert tours in France, Leipzig and Berlin. The manuscript of the symphony was finished in Lucerne in December. It premiered in Jerusalem on January 9, 1997, performed by two orchestras, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, three choirs and vocal soloists, conducted by Lorin Maazel. On March 14 he performed in Poland with the Warsaw National Philharmonic conducted by Kazimierz Kord. Penderecki wanted to give it the name Symphony No. 7, having not yet completed the sixth. A vocal symphony following the tradition started by Beethoven himself and later followed by Mahler and other composers.The work is written for six solo voices, comprising two sopranos, alto, tenor, bass and narrator, three mixed choirs, a large divided orchestra in two groups, the first located in a gallery above the hall, with three clarinets, a bass clarinet doubling clarinet in E flat, three bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, four trombones and tuba. The main group on stage comprises four flutes doubling two piccolos, three oboes, English horn, three clarinets, doubling clarinet in E flat and bass clarinet, three bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, four trombones, tuba, 12 instrumentalists in percussion, timpani, piano, celesta, organ ad libitum, 18 first violins, 16 second violins, 14 violas, 12 cellos and 10 double basses.
