Although abridged (one wonders why), one can't but marvel at how Shostakóvich himself is playing his own music - and one of the funniest excerpts from what otherwise is quite a grim opera!!! Not for nothing that Dmítriy Dmitrjévich (Shostakóvich) spoke of this very interlude, according to his late friend and fan Galjína Pávlovna Vishñévskaja: "The bastard (the shabby peasant, who had just discovered the hidden corpse of her dead husband) rushed to the police, overjoyed that he could inform on her. A pæan to informers - that's a hymn to all informers!" Here, it's no question that on their recordings of the complete opera, Rostropóvich is closer in spirit to what Shostakóvich was out to express than Chung, even if the latter is sometimes more of a stickler to the absolute letter of the score... [It should be mentioned that Vishñévskaja, who for over 20 years was the principal soprano of Moscow's Boljshóy Theatre, was also the late wife and then widow of the no less great late 'cellist and conductor Mstíslav Ljeopóljdovich Rostropóvich. On his recording of Shostakóvich's "Lady Macbeth of Mcjénsk District" (widely considered his - and hers - greatest recording ever) she sings the title-rôle of the murderess-heroine Katjerína Ljvóvna Izmáylova.]
Очевидно, это отрывок из кинохроники того времени. Опера была чрезвычайно популярна, и журналисты могли снять о ней небольшой репортаж для "киножурнала", который показывали в советских кинотеатрах перед основным фильмом.
It's your taste but I like Beethoven over Mozart, Liszt over Chopin, Prokofiev and Shostakovich over other contemporary composers, Tchaikovsky and Rach are my undisputed favourites,
Congratulations Dmitri, you played yourself...
This comment is gold
the dad joke never died
😭
Works on multiple levels since this is the opera that got his works banned in the USSR
It's fascinating watching those little hands leaping about with such energy and precision.
One of my idols.
Its so rare to find videos of early 20th century composers, thanks for uploading!

That left hand 🤤
His right hand is jealous
The piano version feels more fascinating than the orchestral suite they made out of the opera.
?
An extraordinary find, a rare jewel!
WOW! I wish there was more.
Sir Dimitri Shostakovich music always new and many new things to hear.
He is devoted composer !
the 3 dislikes must be Stalin
If it was Stalin, the video would be taken down
Stalin, Zhdanov, and Malenkov.
Don't forget about Richter.

This is my idol
A true sigma at his time
Это что невообразимое! Потрясающе!
I played this opera as a violinist. It's nightmare difficult.
He's not even 30 here 😢
Да, впервые опера поставлена в 1934. Тут ему, действительно, может быть от 28 лет и чуть больше.
Remarkable technique.
That left hand tho...
Amazing
Impressive.
I guess this is Shostakovich at around 25 or 26
about 30 I think (he was born in 1906)
Deamn Good
You a composer, Dmitry
Ну надо же, нашелся какой-то крокодил, который дислайк поставил!

Уже два крокодила!
Три крокодила!
I'm always amazed when non-professional concert performers can play like this.
驚いた!
I didn't know Harry Potter is such a great pianist. :-) God bless Dmitry Dmitrievich.
The film's playback is too fast. In reality, it would be 0.75 speed.
The camera back then have the limit of recording so he played it faster? But idk
this is actually kinda how fast it is supposed to played, even in the orchestra
Thanks. I listened to it again at 75% speed and it does indeed sound much better.
What the hell is his left hand doing?!!
Osian Townsend Jones Is trying to scape from the body 😂
jumps
Playing the Russian version of Stride piano.
What's that short black and white footage just before he starts playing? Is it a video of the original production?

Too bad the music itself is godawful
Excuse meeeee
@@mayadevane3157 it’s a matter of opinion but I dislike Shostakovich even more than Prokofiev

I would recommend Shostakovich or any modern/ contemporary composer any day to Mozart.
