I’m a tool and die maker. When I was an apprentice I was taught to relieve all threaded holes so they do not pull up. On pieces that are hardened, it will pull a puck out around the hole. We would always go 1/32” larger than the tap size and go 1/8” deep. It is harder to do once something like your block is tapped because the drill wants to grab the threads, but it can be done. A lot of blocks have this done already.
Keep putting out the great content!

Chief, my mom always wanted me to watch you race on tv with her. Building my first engine in 35 years with a local machinist for my 71 Camaro she helped me get. Inspiration is a great thing

For you guys who have never used a pipe tap it is really easy to go too deep due to the tapered nature of a NPT thread. Be careful and check fit as you go.

JUSTIN, We were first introduced to Mike Murillo at Midwest Street Cars about 8 years ago. He recently made a statement concerning his battle with aggressive lung cancer. We know you and Mike were pretty close and we all PRAY HARD for his recovery. He’s had a pretty shitty year, and we can only hope 2023 offers a little better luck to the Murillo family.

With so much time in this sucker you should consider some piston squirters. They really make a difference, and seems like this thing could use it. Since you already converted it to priority mains I think it would be fine especially with a check valve sprayer. Basically the way the aftermarket LS ones use a jig to saddle into the main, and you shoot a long bit through and tangent of the individual journal feed. Then you basically tap it and run what looks like a fine brass tip pointed up towards the piston. You can get a check valve that opens up at 20 30 psi so you basically don’t have to worry about the journal getting starved.
It does cost a little bit of power technically, but cooling the piston (with how far over bored it is) might be more important.
    Food for thought

It's great seeing part's going back together hopefully she'll be ROOOLLING & making some BADASS passes 👍✌. Much love and respect to you both .

WOW!!! I am kinda embarrassed to say, I have tapped at least hundreds if not thousands of times, I have NEVER even considered using a rachet...so much easier (easier to screw up too (no pun intended), but as long as you are careful)! THANKS!! I guess your never too old to learn something new.

I have had that happen when I was building ford 460 and 429 engines, same rod but different piston

Curious why when the block was at Geralds it wasn’t decked to creat a perfect gasket surface? The block sanding cleaned up beautifully, however that didn’t knock it flat between the cylinders i can’t imagine?

Your knowledge for engines is amazing. As someone already posted you would make an amazing teacher and Street outlaws is missing you badly

Check piston to counterweight. I had to have my counter weights cut with callies 3.875 crank, 5.85 billet callies I-beam rods.

Damnit, that’s a big kick in the gonads on the rods. Would offer you a spare set of mine but they’re used spares and more than likely too long for your setup also. They’re K1 forged H beam 6.125 for the large journals. Was paying attention to you polishing the deck surfaces. Not sure if it’ll be any help to you in the future but it’s a trick I learned in high school working in a Honda dealership for truing up engine cases, heads and carburetor mating surfaces but I’ve used it on cast iron and all sorts of metals. I use glass window panes which I clean with alcohol. I spray the glass and a sheet of emery cloth or wet/dry sandpaper with 3M spray trim adhesive. Let the adhesive set up for 20 or 30 minutes then adhere the sandpaper to the glass using a cut off polish rod from a hydraulic cylinder to roll the paper down so as to avoid air bubbles between the two. After it’s all rolled out flat I cover it with another window pane using a couple of McMaster Carr or Grainger catalogs to weight the top glass down for a few hours.
Afterwards I have a kickass sanding platen that I can use WD40 with or any light oil. I’ve got them made up in a stack from 120 grit all the way down to 1000. I like using them for true up work on gasket surfaces as using them with the oil really shows high and low spots down to 0.0001 of an inch. I’ve found they do an excellent job on hydraulic equipment where pressures go into the thousands. Using the 9 by 11 sheets leaves some pretty unbelievable results and does it fairly quickly.
Just thought I’d pass along the tip. Good luck with your Heinz 57 of parts, y’all are doing a great job and as always really appreciate you posting the work here so others can learn. 👍

You will get it going just in time for all the small tires races and hopefully I’ll see you two at a few. Dealing with a SBC with weak oil pressure on a new build. Had it apart too many times about ready to big block it. But I have 3 built SBC’s so incase I blow one up I’ll have one ready to go just got 5”s of snow again so I still have time lol
